Alpenrose Velodrome: A Classic Venue for Track Racing
In case you haven’t noticed while turning the pages of this catalog, there has been
resurgence in the interest in fixed gear and track style bikes of late. Concurrently, there
has been renewed interest and participation in track, or velodrome racing. Portland has
the good fortune of being the home of Alpenrose Velodrome, one of America’s premier
and most storied venues for track cycling.
Originally constructed as a dirt bike racing track in 1962 by the owners of the Alpenrose
Dairy and renovated in 1997, the Alpenrose track has been the site of numerous regional,
national and international competitions. Alpenrose Velodrome is one of the steepest and
most exciting velodromes in the country. The track is 268 meters in length and the banking
is an incredible 43 degrees, causing riders to experience loads of up to 2G’s in the tight
16.6 meter radius turns!
The Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) hosts a full array of events at Alpenrose
– ranging from Masters, regional and national championships, to women’s and kids races.
Alpenrose currently holds the distinction of being the only track in the country hosting a
6-Day race, the FIAC Six Day National Championship, which harkens back to the heyday of
track cycling in the US in the early 1900’s when velodrome racing was more popular than
baseball as a national pastime.
