definitely the REAL thing!’
Sunday Mirror.
Welcome to Santa’s
land of dreams
come true
Santa’s kingdom in Lapland is a beautiful land of silent
snowfall – an unspoiled vista of snowclad pine trees,
grazing reindeer and cosy log cabins where flicking wood
fires ensure the warmest of welcomes.
Imagine spending a short break or daybreak beyond the Arctic Circle, in a region of such
beauty that the scenery, the magical atmosphere and, of course, the cold, cold air combine
to take your breath away. This is Lapland, the spellbound region so beautiful that Santa
chose it for his home. And if you visit in the magical weeks leading up to Christmas (or
over the festive season itself), there is the added anticipation that at any moment you may
bump into the grand old man himself.
This is a land of Northern Lights and husky dogs, snowball fights and tobogganing. A
land of contented smiles beside a blazing fire. A land of glowing faces and warm hearts. A
land that is discovered anew on those mornings that you step out onto a fresh fall of snow.
Above all, it is a land where you can watch the sparkle in children’s eyes, as they set out
in search of the real Father Christmas.
TRUE LAPLAND
SANTA FACT: One night, St Nicholas secretly dropped a bag
of gold down a chimney to help the daughter of the house. The bag
fell into a stocking hung up to dry and so a piece of Christmas magic
was born!
True Lapland
Far away from the concrete ski hotels and commercialism
of mass-market winter resorts, lies a land of tranquility,
stunning natural beauty and welcoming communities on
the edge of a vast wilderness.
This is the True Lapland, a land of legends and magic, where Father Christmas has chosen
to make his home. We at Transun love this wonderful region and we know it provides an
authentic Arctic wilderness experience for our guests.
For your special visit to Santa, we will transport you to the region of Enontekiö, in the farflung
north-western arm of Finland, deep within the Arctic Circle, 1,000km north of Finland’s
capital Helsinki and thankfully 300km north of the commercialised resort of Rovaniemi.
In Enontekiö you will breathe what is believed to be the cleanest air in the world. Here, the
expanse of wilderness envelops the visitor with peace and silence. Here, the stunning Northern
Lights frequently evolve across the night sky especially around Christmas and the road north
to Tromsø is officially named the ‘Northern Lights Route’.
Here, amid untainted rivers, crystal-clear lakes, and vast forests, magnificent wildlife still
thrives. And that includes the reindeer: 20,000 of them, compared with just 2,000 people.
Enontekiö is part of the Sámi homeland area that has supported the unique way of life of
its Sámi peoples for generations. Many Sámi people still lead a semi-nomadic life, travelling
across these vast landscapes with the reindeer when the annual migrations take place.
This is a community built upon traditions, a deep respect for the natural world, and a warm
hospitality, as we believe our guests will discover to their delight.

‘Loved every minute of our trip to Lapland and I wouldn’t
hesitate in using Transun again. We shall be back! Many, many,
many, thanks. Fantastic.’ MRS GRACE TUCK, DORCHESTER, DORSET
SANTA CLAUS: THE FACTS
SANTA FACT: Santa’s suit was originally green
before the colour red was used in paintings and
famously used in Coca-cola’s advertisements!
Santa Claus: The facts
How the grand old man of Christmas became an icon to millions
Santa Claus, also known around the world as Saint
Nicholas, Father Christmas and Kris Kringle,
is the mythical figure who, in many western
cultures, brings gifts to good children
overnight on Christmas Eve.
Many western Christmas traditions, such as Santa’s elves, Santa
coming down the chimney, gift-giving, Santa’s colourful outfit and
mistletoe, have their origins in the pagan traditions of the Sámi
people of Lapland.
In the late 19th century, a group of Sámi people moved from
Scandinavia to Alaska with 500 reindeer to teach the Inuit
people to herd reindeer. Several of the Sámi were featured with
their reindeer and Santa on a sled in advertising campaigns.
The Western concept of Santa Claus coming from Lapland was
born. Although the original Scandinavian prototype wore green
trousers, in modern times, Santa Claus is generally depicted as a
plump, jolly, white-bearded man wearing a red coat and trousers
and black leather belt and boots.
This image became popular in the United States and Canada in
the 19th Century, due to the influence of cartoonist Thomas Nast.
First appearing in Harper’s Weekly, Nast’s classic interpretation
of Santa Claus still persists as our present-day image of Father
Christmas.
Joulupukki is the Finnish name for Father Christmas. He
usually wears warm red clothes, uses a walking stick, and travels
in a sleigh driven by reindeer. The song Rudolph The Red-Nosed
Reindeer (in its Finnish translation, Petteri Punakuono) has led to
Rudolph’s general acceptance as Joulupukki’s lead reindeer.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus
In 1897, a little girl called Virginia wrote to her local newspaper,
the New York Sun, distressed because some friends had told
her there was no Santa Claus. The paper’s reply, in the form
of Francis P. Church’s editorial, ‘Yes Virginia, There is a Santa
Claus’ became one of the most famous editorials ever written,
for many years reprinted every Christmas. Here is a shortened
version…
From the Editorial Page, New York Sun, 1897:
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa
Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’ Please tell me
the truth, is there a Santa Claus
Virginia O’Hanlon
Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by
the scepticism of a sceptical age…
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love
and generosity and devotion exist…
How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It
would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no
childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance… The external light with
which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in
fairies… Nobody can imagine all the wonders there are unseeable in
the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the
noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not
the strongest man could tear apart.
Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that ... Is it all
real Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and
abiding.
No Santa Claus Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand
years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he
will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

‘The whole experience was truly magical and one our family will never
forget. The trips were all fantastic and your team were all exceptional
during the activities.’ CLAIRE AND STEPHEN GALLACHER, LANARKSHIRE
Sssh! It’s Santa’s
a sleigh, pulled by a willing reindeer – it could be
a cousin of Dasher, Dancer or Prancer! – to seek
out Santa’s hidden hideaway. There is a hush of
‘This is the holiday of a lifetime - words
can’t express how magical it is!’
SHARON E, STAFFS
A thrilling
husky experience
Friendly, hard-working and eager to please, husky dogs
have long helped man traverse the snowy tundra of
the Arctic. And you can enjoy the thrill of being pulled
through the magnificent snowscapes by your own
team of dogs, the runners of your sled hissing through
the snow and ice. On your Husky Experience, lasting
around 40 minutes, you will have time to befriend the
dogs and learn about their busy lives, before briefly
‘mushing’ your team through the wilderness for around
10 minutes, with one adult steering and one adult, or
two small children, as passengers.
Snowmobile adventure
The snowmobile, or skidoo, has transformed the
lives of those who live in the Arctic. Versatile and
fast, they make travelling through the snow-laden
landscapes an exhilarating experience, and you will
enjoy a 40-minute safari, with the forests and fells
unfolding as you speed along. These are powerful
machines and can only be driven by holders of a full
driving licence, with up to one passenger aged 15 or
above on the back. Children under 15 will travel in a
sleigh being pulled by the guide’s snowmobile.
Snow activities
There’s nothing better than spending quality family
time together in the great outdoors – and where
better than in True Lapland! Throughout your stay
there will be time to head outside and enjoy your
own family activities. There are toboggans available
to borrow for free and you will be pointed in the
direction of the biggest slopes! Then, there’s all the
fun of snowman-making and snowball fights!
And there’s more!
Your fantastic included activities might well whet your
appetite and leave you wanting more! Just as well
that Transun also offers an exciting range of optional
activities (at extra cost), which include longer daytime
treks with snowmobiles and opportunities to set off on
a night safari in search of a one-in-a-lifetime sighting
of the elusive Northern Lights, one of the Earth’s
greatest spectacles. In addition, you can try your
hand at ice fishing, learn some of the skills of reindeer
herding and even spend a night in an igloo!
To provide all of your winter activities at
international standards, with the highest levels of
service and customer care, we work with the aptly
named Santa Safari. Who better than Santa’s own
‘Our day out was magical. The Transun staff were both friendly and
helpful. The way that we were moved around activities ensured that
we enjoyed everything without the need for queuing, making it feel
like an individual experience.’ MR ALAN BUDDEN, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
The Arctic Star
Situated on the outskirts of Swedish
Karesuando, the Arctic Star is a traditional
and friendly hotel. A 20-minute walk
from the Finnish border, the location feels
genuinely remote and offers superb views
over both a lake and the Muonio River. The
rooms are relatively simple and cosy, while
the hotel boasts a good range of facilities
including a bar and restaurant that offers
hearty local dishes. The Arctic Star is in
a good location to explore Karesuando by
foot, dropping in at Sweden’s most northerly
church, paying a visit to the local museum
and crossing regularly between Sweden
and Finland! It also offers the chance to
follow in some very famous footsteps, as
the Dalai Lama stayed at the Arctic Star on
a visit to Lapland. The hotel has recently
undergone a programme of refurbishment
and improvements and there are now three
standards of room available:
Standard
While these value-for-money twin and
double rooms have not been refurbished in
recent years, they are spacious and cosy
with en-suite facilities. These rooms can
accommodate a third person on a fold-up
bed, if required. There are also standard
rooms in a separate building in the hotel
grounds, from which you may step out of
your room and gaze up at the Northern
Lights.
Superior
These twin and double rooms enjoy a
view from the front of the hotel towards
Kaarevaara Hill and the nearby lake. These
rooms are the largest that the Arctic Star
provides. The en-suite shower rooms of
superior rooms were refurbished to a
comfortable standard in 2011.
Davvi Arctic Lodge
Arctic Star
Premium
The Arctic Star’s premium rooms underwent
a full refurbishment in the summer of
2012, masterminded by a team of Parisian
architects. Refurbished to a high standard,
these double rooms feature underfloor
heating, and most have glass panels between
the rain shower room and bedroom and
feature mirrors. While stylish, space is
limited, but two larger Deluxe Premium
rooms are also available.
SANTA FACT: Rudolph was added to Santa’s reindeer team
on one Christmas Eve during a bad snowstorm. Santa’s 8 reindeer
could not see to fly through the storm. Rudolph with his glowing
red nose lit the way for Santa’s sleigh.
2 NIGHTS IN KARESUANDO/HETTA
Santa’s On His Way
A short break packed with memorable moments

‘A once-in-a-lifetime trip with our two grandchildren.
The children had a wonderful time and we had the
enjoyment of seeing them enjoying themselves.’
MR JOHN JACKSON, CARDIFF
Imagine setting out with your children in search of the real Father Christmas in the snowfilled
realms of Lapland! It is an experience that will live in their memories forever. The
setting is a winter wonderland, on the edge of Europe’s last great wilderness. It’s magical, of
course... why else would Santa make his home here You start out on snowmobiles, then in
the quiet forest, you transfer to a reindeer sleigh.
Perhaps an elf will appear, to help you look
for clues. Then, suddenly, you glimpse a
golden glow from a lonely log cabin! Is this
Santa’s secret hideaway Will you dare
knock and enter
Your search for Santa is the highlight of
your two-night break with Transun. But
there is so much more included. From
the Husky Experience to the Snowmobile
Adventure, from sledging to the Festive
Dinner, your short break is filled with
memorable experiences. Here is a typical
itinerary:
Day 1
After you land in Enontekiö in Finland
you will be guided to your coach. The
journey (15 minutes to our hotels in Hetta
or one hour to the Davvi Arctic Lodge in
Karesuando) takes you through the heart
of the Sámi lands. Watch out for reindeer
in the woods! Your all-in-one thermal suits
and boots collection will be organised by
your representative. After checking in
at your hotel, your Transun rep hosts a
welcome meeting and during dinner they
will answer your questions.
Day 2
Today, you will be joining your first
included safari: the 40-minute Snowmobile
Adventure. A supervised kids’ snowmobile
ride will be available. Then, the highlight of
the day when you board a reindeer sleigh
and set off in search of Father Christmas.
During a private family meeting in his cabin,
each child has the chance to talk with Santa
and receives a small gift. After returning to
your hotel for the Festive Dinner, why not join
us on the optional Northern Lights Husky
Safari
Day 3
Check out after breakfast before 9am,
and join the 40-minute Husky Experience.
Then, there’s time for snow activities,
with toboggans available. Plenty of family
fun is to be had making snowmen or
enjoying snowball fights! After lunch,
you set off by coach to Enontekiö for
your flight home.
There are few experiences quite as exhilarating as driving a snowmobile through Arctic
Your dogs are eager for the off! Huskies are at their happiest when there is an adventure
before them. You decide who is going to be the musher, guiding the team of dogs. In each
sled, one additional person (or two small children) settles down to enjoy the ride. And then
you’re off on a journey, part of your 40-minute Husky Experience, through the wilderness,
taking you out of sight of civilisation, where the trees bow under the burden of snow and
the distant fells look mysterious in the half-light.
The Husky Experience is a highlight of your
4 NIGHTS IN KARESUANDO/HETTA
For Auld Lang Syne
Celebrate the New Year inside the Arctic Circle
It’s New Years’s Eve and in the crisp air of a Lapland night you celebrate the birth of a new
year, perhaps – if you are really lucky – beneath nature’s own magnificent firework show, the
Northern Lights. You’ve had such a good time seeing in the New Year, you wish you could do
it all again. Well, you can. If you are staying in Karesuando, which lies on the Finnish/Swedish
border, given the hour’s time difference between the two countries, you can stroll across to
Sweden and start your celebrations all over again! Twice the celebrations ... and twice the fun!
Your New Year celebrations are only part of
your short break with Transun. But there is
so much more included. From the Search for
Santa, to the Husky Experience, from the New
Year Dinner to the Snowmobile Adventure,
your three-night break is packed with magical
experiences. Here is a typical itinerary:
Day 1
After you land in Enontekiö in Finland
you will be guided to your coach. The
15-minutes drive to Hetta (or one hour to
Karesuando) takes you through the heart
of the Sámi lands. Watch out for reindeer in
the woods! Your all-in-one thermal suits and
boots collection will be organised by your
Day 2
After breakfast, you head out on your
first safari: the thrilling 40-minute Husky
Experience followed by a warming lunch.
Throughout the day you can enjoy snow
activities outside, with toboggans available.
Or there’s plenty of family fun to be had
making snowmen or enjoying a good oldfashioned
snowball fight! This evening, enjoy
a New Year Celebration including a special
feast and fireworks.
Day 3
Today, you will be joining your second
DAY BREAKS
Walking In A
Winter Wonderland
Visit Santa’s Lapland hideaway... all in one day

‘As a family we had a wonderful day out,
which has made many memories which will
last us forever.’ MR RIKI GARNETT, DURHAM
Imagine spending the day in Santa’s kingdom – flying from an airport near you – and still
being home in time for supper. For our Walking In A Winter Wonderland day break, we take
you to a magical location in the far north of Finnish Lapland, close to a vast snow-covered
wilderness and a million miles from the overcrowded, over commercialised Lapland day
break destinations favoured by some of our competitors.
Winter Wonderland takes you into True
Lapland, home of the Sámi people, and on the
edge of Europe’s last unspoiled wilderness. You
arrive at a cluster of cabins and a traditional
log-built restaurant. There, you will experience
a magical and unforgettable search for Santa’s
secret hideaway and each family will have an
opportunity to make a private visit to talk
with him in his cabin. Plus, a chance to
sample reindeer rides, snowmobiles and husky
dog sleds.
Please see ‘What Does The Real Santa Look Like’ on page 32.
A Day To Remember
We fly to Enontekiö airport, from where this
magical day break takes you deep within
the Arctic landscapes. Our price includes
the protective warmth of a thermal suit and
boots (essential in a region where the average
December temperature ranges between -7C
and -35C) but please ensure that you bring
additional scarves, hats and waterproof gloves.
A Winter Wonderland
You will enjoy a wide range of short taster
activities, each lasting a few minutes. Enjoy
a sled journey, being drawn by an eager
team of huskies, and an altogether calmer
reindeer sleigh trip. The day break also
includes a snowmobile trip when adults with
a full UK driving licence have the opportunity
to drive through the silent snowscapes
(children pulled in a sleigh behind guide). All
major activities take place on a frozen lake or
river. Your Transun representative will guide
you through a structured itinerary, in order
to make the most of your time in the resort.
Exciting Snow Activities
As well as all the activities detailed above,
there will be time to play in the snow, giving
children (and parents too!) the chance to
enjoy tobogganing, snowman-making and
snowball fights! A warming two-course lunch
is included in the price of your day break.
Search For Santa
The highlight of the day arrives when you
venture into the snow-clad surroundings
in the hope of finding the hidden log cabin
where Santa sometimes stays at this time
of the year. After a magical journey across a
frozen river, each family will enjoy a private
visit with Santa, who will find the time to talk
to each child about their Christmas wishes.
‘My five-year-old whispered to me on our reindeer ride
“Mummy this is magical” and I have to say I agreed.
A wonderful experience.’ DAWN VAUGHAN, BIRMINGHAM
Sometimes,
it’s snow joke
True Lapland is a wonderful, authentic wilderness location and there is little wonder
Santa has chosen it for his home. But please bear in mind that when it comes to visiting
Santa there, you are flying deep into the Arctic Circle in the depths of winter when
weather conditions can at times become adverse.
While the majority of Transun flights depart and
arrive on time, there are occasions when severe
conditions cause unavoidable delays. Airlines and
aircraft captains always place the safety of their
passengers first and may decide not to fly while
adverse conditions are forecast. In this event, we
at Transun will do all we can to minimise delays
and ensure your break is operated as closely to
the original itinerary as possible.
However, particularly in the case of daybreaks,
a lengthy delay might result in the regrettable
but unavoidable decision to cancel the
departure, where the delay is so great that it
makes it impossible to deliver the itinerary
as intended. In these circumstances, entirely
outside Transun’s control, all our clients will
receive a full refund, or the option to move to
another departure, depending on availability.
…and brrrr!
It can be cold!
Please remember that you are travelling to the
Arctic Circle where temperatures can plummet
to levels far colder than in the UK. In December
2014, some of our Santa guests in Finland
experiences temperatures of around -35C. As
most of your activities are based outside, We do
supply a thermal suit for everyone (up-to size 48)
but PLEASE ensure you bring a sufficient supply
of hats, waterproof gloves, snoods/balaclavas,
thermal socks and other warm clothes to ensure
all members of your party are wrapped up nice
and warm, especially children. There is a short,
helpful video on suitable clothing in Lapland on
the Transun Facebook page.
Transun Travel Insurance 2015-16
Checking availability: Over the phone on 01865 265200, online at www.
transun.co.uk or with your local travel agents.
Confirm reservation: We will require forenames, surnames and dates of births
for all travellers. We will also request details of your insurer if you decline our
insurance. A deposit of £200pp will be required or, if you book within ten weeks
of departure, full payment. Payment can be made via credit* or debit card. *For
payments made direct via credit card, there is a 3% transaction fee. Other travel
agents’ charges may vary.
Confirmation: A confirmation invoice will be sent. Please check all details
carefully and advise us of any discrepancies within 24 hours. Any changes made
after this will incur an amendment fee.
Tickets/Travel Documents: Travel documents will be sent approx seven days
prior to departure, where possible via email. You no longer require physical
tickets to travel.
What insurance do I require
We recommend the insurance offered by Transun. If you choose to obtain other
insurance cover, it is essential that your policy covers you for ‘winter sports’,
including snowmobiles and huskies. For more information on insurance, please
see page 31 of our brochure.
I know it can get cold in Lapland but how cold
Winter in Lapland is extremely cold compared to the UK. Temperatures rarely
rise above freezing and December temperatures range between -7C and -35C.
The air in Lapland is quite dry and therefore -10C doesn’t feel as cold as you
might expect. You will need a series of base layers under your thermal suit.
How much daylight will there be in December
There are four to five hours of daylight on average in December. This is termed
as ‘grey light’ in Finland and is usually between the hours of 1000 and 1430.
(This may vary by up to an hour according to location.) Either side of these
times, it will be as night-time. Snow ensures a good level of reflection which
makes it possible to see where you are walking. The darkness adds to the
magical setting of your surroundings and is often emphasised by using the light
of fires and outdoor candles (where appropriate). Some wilderness locations
maybe without artificial light.
Will I see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)
In the north of Finland, the chance of seeing this phenomenon is greatly
increased. On a clear night, if you are lucky, you may see the Aurora Borealis,
which appear across the sky in white, red or green lights swirling through the
atmosphere.
Will I be able to ski while in Lapland
Downhill skiing is not currently available in the wilderness locations that
provide the setting for our short breaks.
Will I have the chance to buy souvenirs
There are a few souvenir shops at Lapland’s airports and at some of the hotels.
Where time permits, we will arrange to take you to a souvenir shop before
returning home.
Are the tours suitable for adults travelling without children
Our tours can be enjoyed by adults travelling unaccompanied by children
since there is a wide variety of activities suitable for adults. Alternatively those
looking for a more adult focused break, without Santa, why not take a look at
our Festive Lights breaks. For more details see www.transun.co.uk
Will I be safe in Lapland
The local operators are fully qualified, experienced and safety conscious and
their equipment complies with local safety standards. However, it must be
borne in mind that the activities are authentically Lappish as we are offering
the experience of local adventures. To keep safe, you must ensure you follow
the instructions of our guides. Bear in mind that you are visiting an area where
Arctic conditions prevail. And please remember that the animal rides are
traditional and authentic and use untamed animals. Rides are taken at your
own risk, although that risk is very small. Parents and guardians are responsible
for the supervision of their own children and those within their party at all
times. Before commencing any activities on these tours, each participant will
be given clear and full safety instructions. Please ensure you follow these
instructions and exercise caution. No one should travel without insurance.
How much snow can I expect
Snow falls in Lapland between October and May and it is common to find thick
snow cover in December. However, it is also possible that there may be a period
of warmer weather, especially given the effects of global warming, which may
cause the snow and ice to melt before the next snowfall.
What happens to my activities if there is not enough snow or it is
extremely cold
If there are insufficient levels of snow or ice for reliant activities to operate upon
the day of participation, then our suppliers will move all activities to a position
where snow is available, adjust tracks accordingly so a modified activity
programme can operate or provide alternative activities that are not reliant on
snow and ice. Because it is possible that snow will fall just the night prior to
one of our planned trips, Transun will not cancel trips nor refund payments in
the event of no snow on the day and will endeavour to arrange all activities
to replicate those planned. In cases where an exact replica is not possible a
suitable alternative will be offered. Where this happens no refunds will be
made. All activities are arranged subject to local weather conditions, which are
outside of our control. Should temperatures reach an extreme, then modified
programmes will operate. We reserve the right to amend or cancel any part of
tours or safaris if our suppliers or we consider that conditions are unsafe. These
judgements are usually made when the temperature falls below -20 degrees;
a variety of factors may influence decisions. NB: Periods preceding or post
extreme weather maybe subject to changes in itinerary or operational order.
I have a dietary requirement; can this be catered for
It is recommended that any passengers with special request such as nut-free,
gluten-free, vegan, diabetic etc. carry some supplies of foodstuffs with them.
For any dietary requirements, you must advise us at the time of booking and we
will pass this request on to the airline and accommodation where applicable,
who will endeavour to fulfil your requirements. However given the remoteness
of the locations, this cannot be guaranteed.
How accurate is the brochure
Details within this brochure are correct at the time of going to press. All
excursions and itineraries are subject to alteration and withdrawal in response
to local conditions, timings and demand. We cannot accept any liability for
opening times of places of interest during your visit. All breaks are subject to
Transun’s terms and conditions and Frequently Asked Questions (copies on
request). Prices/discounts are subject to change and are confirmed at the time
of booking. Throughout this brochure ‘child’ prices etc. refer to all children aged
two to fifteen years inclusive, unless stated otherwise. If you have booked/are
booking based on our Preview brochure, you should consult our website or call
to check updated travel arrangements and itineraries.
Are the photos in this brochure genuine
Most of the photographs in our brochure were taken during recent seasons
in Karesuando and Hetta. Some photography is for purposes of illustration.
Transun cannot guarantee that the exact scenes will be replicated.
Are the tours suitable for infants
Due to the extreme weather conditions in Lapland, we recommend that you
do not take infants under the age of two on our inclusive day breaks. This is
because a great deal of time may be spent outside in extreme Arctic conditions.
It is possible on short breaks however if they are not walking we would not
recommend that they travel. If you choose to travel with an infant you must
be prepared to miss out on activities if advised by our local guide and safari
providers. Infants are charged £80 on short breaks, and £40 on daybreaks. We
are unable to guarantee provision of thermal suits and boots and recommend
you bring your own.
Is the trip suitable for disabled or severely ill visitors
For many years we have been taking visitors suffering from a range of severe
disorders on our trips to Lapland, and we know that a successful visit can be a
dream come true. However, we cannot provide any special assistance or care
and we do not have specially-made vehicles nor adapted sleighs etc to offer
specialist facilities to those who need them. While our staff have always done
their best to help, they do not have specialist training in care for the disabled, so
we strongly recommend that specialist carers who are experienced in providing
expert help (lifting, etc) accompany any disabled travellers. Certain resorts
are more suitable than others for physically challenged visitors and you are
advised to discuss your needs with our staff before making a reservation. Use of
wheelchairs in the snow is extremely difficult. Additionally, you must complete
and return to us a checklist prepared by ABTA that fully informs us of your
needs. Please note that acceptance of your booking by us does not mean that
your needs will be met.
Can I pre-book seats on the plane
As this is a family product we do not offer the opportunity to pre book seats
as it is our belief that all families should be sat together where possible. We do
brief the check-in staff at the airport to seat all families together, however this
cannot be guaranteed in all cases.
Can I smoke in Lapland
The regulations governing smoking in Finland and Sweden are similar to those
in the UK and smoking is not permitted in public places or within any of the
hotels. If you do smoke, we ask that you act responsibly as these are family
breaks and respect the environment that you are in. We request that you do
not smoke whilst on activities or when in large groups. Please dispose of your
cigarette butts in ashtrays provided. Although the snow is a good cover for any
litter, please bear in mind that this does melt and any litter becomes visible.
Are the itineraries in the brochure correct
The itineraries shown within this brochure are for guidance only and subject
to change. You may not do the activities in the order they appear within this
brochure. For short break clients, we will endeavour to advise you of any major
changes before you travel. However, this is not always possible and you will
receive your full itinerary on arrival.
I’M GETTING READY TO TRAVEL, WHAT INFORMATION WILL I
FIND USEFUL
Do I get tickets for the flights
We issue an e-ticket document which consists of a sheet of paper and not
individual tickets. This will show your final flight and passenger details.
Will I be sent accommodation/activity vouchers
We do not issue accommodation or activity vouchers, your booking information
is sent directly to resort.
How much luggage can I take with me
For those on short breaks, the limit is 18 kilos per person (excluding infants)
plus one piece of hand* luggage per person.
What Happens if my day break flight is delayed
If this were to happen on your outbound day break flight, then every effort
would be made to ensure that the delay time was made up by a later return
departure time from Lapland. Once the day break flight is delayed by more
than three hours, it is likely that the whole trip will be cancelled and you will
be offered an alternative trip or a full refund of monies paid to us. In the event
that the delay is less than three hours and the flight takes off, every effort will
be made to deliver the programme as planned but it may be necessary to
reduce the time spent on the activities or on occasions to omit some of them.
Please note that no compensation will be paid in these circumstances. In the
event that your aircraft is diverted at your destination airport we will endeavour
to replicate to the greatest extent possible the programme you would have
received. Where this happens no refunds will be due. If no arrangements can be
made you will receive a full refund minus a deduction for the airfare.
I’m travelling on a short break and my flight is delayed – what
happens
It is possible that short break passengers may still be flown out even if the
delay exceeds three hours and guests will need to refer to their insurance
policies for compensation. Should it be impossible to return home from the
destination on the programmed evening departure due to reasons beyond our
control (force majeure see terms and conditions), Transun will make every effort
to accommodate passengers overnight in accommodation of a reasonable
standard and provide an evening meal and breakfast. The company’s liability
will then cease and no compensation will be paid.
What clothing do I need
We provide you with an all-in-one thermal suit and boots on arrival on all of
our trips. It is also essential that you bring a warm hat, scarf and gloves. In the
case of thermal suits, please note that exceptional sizes may not be available.
Those needing thermal suits outside the usual children’s sizes and adult small/
medium/ large range are recommended to buy their own, before travelling.
Minimum child sizes: 90cm suit and 25/26 boots. Maximum adult sizes: 48”
chest and 47/48 boots. Please see our pre-departure documents for more
information.
Can I buy duty free
Finland is part of the EU and therefore you are no longer able to purchase
duty-free goods when travelling to Lapland.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN LAPLAND
What is the time difference
Finland is two hours ahead of the UK and Sweden is one hour ahead.
What is the local currency
The currency in Finland is the euro. We strongly recommend that you
purchase euros in the UK prior to travelling, as the option to withdraw or
change money in resort may not always be available. Most hotels and shops
will accept major credit cards and a limited number accept sterling.
Will there be queues
On our all-inclusive programme, there will only be limited queuing for the
rides. If you do come across a lengthy queue we recommend your move on
to another activity to avoid standing around and to maximise your time in
resort enjoying activities.
Can I use my camera or camcorder in Lapland
There is no problem using these indoors, in Santa’s log cabin for example, but
outdoors, photographic covers are essential. You should also bear in mind that
the perpetual twilight will affect your photography. If you are going to be using
a camcorder in Lapland, please bear in mind that the cold affects the life of the
battery on your camcorder and if you intend to film a lot please ensure that on
overnight visits you bring a charger or spare battery.
Are there toilet facilities
Due to the natural environment, toilet facilities may not be widely available but
temporary or wilderness toilets will be on hand at activity points. However, we
recommend that guests use the facilities in their hotel or other establishments
when they are available.
Is it commercialised
Far from it. The areas we operate to are genuine Lappish villages and not
man-made resorts. We offer true wilderness locations which are far removed
from anything artificial or commercial. Do not expect a theme park or
Disney World with shops, ATMs or similar.
Can anyone drive a snowmobile
Driving a snowmobile in Finland is like driving a car, similar laws apply. A full
driving licence is required. Please ensure you bring your driving licence with
you. A damage waiver must be signed before commencing the activity. Credit
card copies are taken and a 550 euros excess is payable for any damage,
irrespective of severity. Normal traffic laws apply on snowmobile routes. Safety
helmets must be worn at all times. (Please note this is not a definitive list of
instructions and liabilities, further information is available upon request, and
will be provided at resort.) As a general rule, all children 15 and under will
travel in a sleigh pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. Children 12-plus can ride
as a passenger behind a responsible parent/ adult, however this is physically
demanding and therefore they will be assessed by the local guide on the day
and it is at the guide’s discretion, their decision being final.
Are the kids snowmobiles safe
We have a miniature snowmobile ride for children. Depending on their size
they are normally suitable for 4 to 10 year-olds. As it is a motorised vehicle, the
ride is supervised so only available at specified times. Snowmobiles are driven
around in a circle, attached to a rope. Children will have a minimum of five laps.
What are the hotel ratings and are they suitable for everyone
There is no official rating for the properties in Finland and therefore you will not
find any within our brochure. We have listed all the facilities available within
each property to help guide your selection and the information is accurate at
the time of going to print. All our accommodation is similar to a good standard
three-star. Because an essential ingredient of the Lapland experience is a
proximity to nature, some of our properties may occupy locations that, due
to distances or difficult/icy terrain, may be unsuitable for the disabled or very
young or very old. Should you need detailed guidance regarding any particular
location, please contact our reservations team (01865 265 200). Where
additional beds are provided, these may be sofa or portable beds. The operation
and supervision of overseas property, transport and other services is subject to
local laws, regulations, standards and codes of practice of individual countries.
The legal and safety requirements may be of a different standard to that in the
UK and the standards imposed will be that of the country you are visiting, not
of the UK. Upon arrival at your accommodation you will, after registration, be
allocated your rooms. Please note that if accommodation units are filled to their
maximum occupancy they may be cramped and storage can be minimal.
What does the real Santa look like
All adults and children know that Santa has special magic powers and is able
to do mysterious things like fly round the world in a single evening. He may
also appear differently dressed depending on the task he is undertaking and
may even have altered his facial appearance to confuse his naughty elves. We
advise all parents to be diplomatic in sharing photographs with other clients
and their children.
Can Igloos and IceBars be guaranteed
No. Igloos and IceBars are reliant on a prolonged period of very specific
weather conditions for the manufacture of the snow and the harvesting of the
ice from the local river. Whilst we endeavour to create them each year we are
reliant on the appropriate weather conditions which can not be guaranteed.
What is the food like on short breaks

‘Thank you for a fabulous day.
You made a little boy’s dreams
come true.’ MRS JULIE BELTON, LIVERPOOL
you can store your outdoor coats and shoes that you have travelled in. Please
your valuables such as money and passports. There is no secure storage for
valuables. You will collect your bag at the end of the day when you change out
maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. We can
also offer you an arbitration scheme for the resolution of disputes arising out of,
or in connection with this contract. The arbitration scheme is arranged by ABTA
and administered independently. It provides for a simple and inexpensive method
of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on you in respect of
costs. The scheme does not apply to claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per
person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to
claims which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences.
The scheme can however deal with compensation claims which include an
element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,500 on the amount
the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. Your request for
arbitration must be received by ABTA within eighteen months of the date of return
from holiday. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be
available if we agree, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement. For
injury and illness claims, you can request the ABTA Mediation Procedure and we
assistance in resolving disputes can be found on www.abta.com.
4. Your Holiday Price
1) We reserve the right to alter the prices of any of the holidays shown in our
brochure. You will be advised of the current price of the holiday that you wish to
book before your contract is confirmed.
2) When you make your booking you must pay a deposit of £200 per person.
For certain itineraries, it is sometimes necessary to issue tickets for your flights
with immediate effect upon booking. In these circumstances, we will ask for full
payment for your flight tickets, in addition to the standard deposit payment. The
balance of the price of your travel arrangements must be paid at least 10 weeks
before your departure date.
If the deposit and/or balance is not paid in time, we shall cancel your travel
arrangements. If the balance is not paid in time we shall retain your deposit. All
monies you pay to the travel agent are held by him on our behalf at all times. The
price of your travel arrangements is fully guaranteed and will not be subject to
any surcharges.
5. If You Change Your Booking
If, after our confirmation invoice has been issued, you wish to change your
travel arrangements in any way, for example your chosen departure date or
accommodation, we will do our utmost to make these changes but it may not
always be possible. Any request for changes to be made must be in writing from
the person who made the booking or your travel agent. You will be asked to pay an
administration charge of £25 up to 10 weeks prior to departure and £75 between
10 weeks and your departure date, and any further cost we incur in making this
alteration. All charges are per person, per change. Optional excursions and activities
are non refundable and non transferable.
For name changes on scheduled flights, this may be an additional £65. You should
be aware that these costs could increase the closer to the departure date that
changes are made and you should contact us as soon as possible. Note: Certain
travel arrangements (e.g. Apex Tickets) may not be changeable after a reservation
has been made and any alteration request could incur a cancellation charge of up
to 100% of that part of the arrangements.
of your thermal suits. On some occasions it may be necessary that these bags
are taken with you.
What can I expect for lunch on a day break
For those clients travelling on our all-inclusive day breaks, there will be a
two-course lunch of a starter and main course buffet, which includes kids’
and vegetarian options. Typical dishes are soup for starters, followed by
jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings and pasta. Drinks are not included.
How long is the transfer from the airport
Transfer times can vary according to weather conditions and can range
between 35-50 minutes.
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
Flights
In most cases we charter direct flights on a fast comfortable B737, A320/321,
B757 or B767. However, flight plans may change before departure and we
reserve the right to substitute alternative carriers and/or aircraft types where
necessary. Where this situation arises, it is not possible to transfer to another
day/short break or cancel without incurring normal cancellation charges (see
booking conditions). All of our flights are non-smoking. Airline regulations
vary but many will refuse permission to fly for women who will be 28 or more
weeks into pregnancy on the date of return travel. Transun operates direct
flights but these may occasionally stop to off-load or pick-up clients. A direct
flight does not necessarily mean a non-stop flight.
Booking Terms & Conditions
6. If You Cancel Your Holiday
You, or any member of your party, may cancel your travel arrangements at
any time. Written notification from the person who made the booking or your
travel agent on your behalf must be received at our offices. Since we incur costs
in cancelling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay the applicable
cancellation charges. Your notice of cancellation will only take effect on the day it
is received in writing at our offices. We recommend that you use recorded delivery,
upon receipt of which the following cancelation charges will apply:- Cancellation
charge shown as % of total break price, excluding insurance premium.
More than 70 days Deposit only
29-70 days 50% or deposit if greater
15-28 days 75% or deposit if greater
14 days or later 100%
Note: If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your
insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges. Insurance premiums
are non-refundable.
7. If We Change or Cancel Your Holiday
It is unlikely that we will have to make any changes to your travel arrangements,
but we do plan the arrangements many months in advance. Occasionally, we
may have to make changes and we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most
of these changes will be minor and we will advise you or your travel agent of
them at the earliest possible date. We also reserve the right in any circumstances
to cancel your travel arrangements. For example, if the minimum number of
clients required for a particular travel arrangement is not reached, we may have
to cancel it. However, we will not cancel your travel arrangements less than 10
weeks before your departure date, except for reasons of force majeure failure to
reach an economic minimum number of passengers on that departure or failure
by you to pay the final balance. If we are unable to provide the booked travel
arrangements, you can either have a refund of all monies paid or accept an offer of
alternative travel arrangements of comparable standard from us, if available (we
will refund any price difference if the alternative is of a lower value). In accordance
with EU Regulation 2111/2005 we are required to advise you of the actual carrier
operating your flight/connecting flight/transfer. Any changes to the actual airline
after you have received your tickets will be notified to you as soon as possible
and in all cases at check-in or at the boarding gate. Such a change is deemed to
be a minor change. Other examples of minor changes include alteration of your
outward/return flights by less than 12 hours, changes to aircraft type, change of
accommodation to another of the same standard. If we make a major change
to your holiday, we will inform you or your travel agent as soon as reasonably
possible if there is time before your departure. You will have the choice of either
accepting the change of arrangements, accepting an offer of alternative travel
arrangements of comparable standard from us if available (we will refund any
price difference if the alternative is of a lower value), or cancelling your booked
holiday and receiving a full refund of all monies paid. In all cases, except where the
major change arises due to reasons of force majeure, we will pay compensation
as detailed:
notified to you. Amount you will receive from us
