2013 Burlington Winter Festival

Come one,

Come All...

...to the Burlington Winter Festival, presented by Burlington Parks and Recreation

and the Church Street Marketplace, celebrating 21 years on February 2nd,

2013! Activities all around Burlington include the Vermont State Snow Carving

Competition on the Waterfront, Family Expo at ECHO Lake Aquarium and

Science Center, Young Tradition Showcase in City Hall, Church Street’s Winter

Lights Walk, Ice Sculptures on the Marketplace, Winter Bazaar, Winter Dance

Party, the Penguin Plunge and brand new activities at the Moran Plant planned by

Revision Moran!

The Vermont Snow Carving Competition brings teams of carvers to create art

from a six foot square block of snow! Carvers begin sculpting on January 31 and

continue untill noon on Saturday, February 2. Burlington holds the official sanction

for snow carving competitions from the National organization in Wisconsin. Our

winners will represent Vermont in the National Snow Carving Competition in

2014. Last year the Vermont team placed first in the National Competition! This

year, they will be defending their title! The public can vote on site for the People’s

Choice award from 10am to noon.

The Penguin Plunge, starting at 11am is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Vermont

and brings community members and organizations together to jump in the lake

for a cause! Following the Penguin Plunge, continue North on the bikepath to

the Moran Plant and visit for an exciting new winter POPup event on Saturday

February 2nd from 1pm-10pm. The POPup event will take place on the bike path

side of Moran. Enjoy ice skating (weather-permitting), a warm and welcoming

fire pit, delicious s’mores, food, music, and an opportunity to peek inside Moran,

the sleeping beast on the Waterfront! Learn more about the City’s initiative to

improve infrastructure on our Waterfront. Bask in the glow of festive lighting and

the warmth of the fire pit, roast yourself marshmallows, and take a turn on the

ice skating rink at this new POPup event. Come for the early afternoon and stay

through the evening or visit any time from 1pm-10pm.

On Church Street, enjoy locally crafted and internationally inspired treasures at

the “Winter Bazaar” on the Mall Block from 12pm-5pm on Saturday, February 2nd!

Handmade jewelry and accessories, crafts, personal care products and much more

will all be available. Enjoy ice carvings sponsored and representative of

downtown Burlington businesses up and down the Marketplace!

Watch Murray from Wicked Good Ice transform a block of ice into

the Winter Lights snowflake on the Mall Block, next to the Citizens

Bank tent!

At 6pm, chill OUTside with a frosty brew or a custom cocktail

that has been run through the ICE LUGE at Hotel Vermont’s Ice

Bar at 25 Cherry Street! Purchase tickets at hotelvt.com and

then join the crowds on Church Street for the Winter Dance

party following the Ice Bar event at Hotel Vermont. Featuring

BONJOUR-HI, with outdoor seating at participating bars from

10pm-Midnight on City Hall Block, you are bound to

have a good time! Grab a friend and rock out on the bricks!

Throughout the Winter Season, enjoy Church Street’s

newest event, Winter Lights, sponsored by Citizens

Bank. Celebrate Winter, Celebrate Light! Winter Lights

commences the Friday of the Burlington Winter Festival

and will feature a number of new light installations on

the Marketplace. Enjoy beautifully decorated canopies

of light on each one of Church Street’s intersections,

spheres in our trees and colored lights on the Top Block!

Burlington Winter Festival, welcoming

young people and their teachers/mentors

internationally as respected performers,

composers and recording artists. The

evening will include a program short

performances, followed by a FREE pizza

break, and finish with a short participatory

contra dance suitable for families and total

beginners.

A large part of the most influential

traditional and folk music has been made

by artists in their teens and twenties.

Young Tradition Vermont tries to ensure

there are opportunities for young players,

singers, dancers to be supported, and to

have opportunities to learn and perform

with minimal interference. YTV is there to

help these young people to develop and

experiment as part of the living traditions

passed down from previous generations.

The performers are young in age, but ‘old

souls,’ the latest in a long line of tradition

bearers at the intersection of the past and

the future. This showcase is part of a series
