Ernest Bloch was born in Geneva in 1880.
Although his parents were not particularly
artistic, music called to Bloch even as a child. At
the age of nine he vowed to become a composer
and then ritualistically burned the written vow
on a mound of stones. That same year he began
learning to play the violin, quickly proving
himself to be a prodigy. He began composing
shortly thereafter, starting with some violin
melodies.
Bloch moved to Brussels at the age of 16 to
study with the noted violinist Eugene Ysaÿe.
He continued to compose during his three years
of study with Ysaÿe, and grew as a musician,
conductor and composer. After he finished his
studies in Brussels, he moved to Germany, then
on to Paris in 1903 and back to Geneva. While
in Geneva he married Marguerite Schneider.
The couple soon had three children: Ivan
(born in 1905), Suzanne (1907), and Lucienne
(1909).
