STRETCH YOUR
BOUNDARIES
27 MARCH - 29 MARCH 2008
ESPLANADE HOTEL, FREMANTLE
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
INVITATION
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the ALA, the Conference Organising Committee
and the Scientific Committee, I am delighted to invite you
to the Seventh Australasian Lymphology Association
Conference to be held at the Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle
from March 27 - 29 2008.
The biennial conference serves as a key forum for attendees
to share valuable information in all areas of Lymphology and
Lymphoedema. Delegates have the opportunity to explore
research, innovations and positive initiatives currently utilised
in clinical practice. This conference’s theme is “exercise your
mind, stretch your boundaries”.
I am pleased to confirm our keynote speaker from the US is
Dr. Katie Schmitz. Kathryn Schmitz, PhD, has led nine exercise
related studies, including a randomised controlled trial to
assess the effects of twice weekly strength training among 86
recent breast cancer survivors (the Weight Training for Breast
Cancer Survivors (WTBS) study, and an ongoing randomised
controlled trial to assess the safety of upper body exercise
among 288 breast cancer survivors with and without
lymphoedema (Physical Activity and Lymphoedema Trial (PAL)).
Dr. Schmitz’s research extends from the role of physical activity
in the prevention and aetiology of obesity related cancers to the
usefulness of activity for rehabilitation and health promotion in
cancer survivors of all cancers. Her meta-analysis on the topic
of exercise interventions in cancer patients and survivors
provides a starting point for clinicians to understand the effects
of exercise among cancer survivors. Dr. Schmitz’ long term
professional goal is to see that all oncologists and cancer
patients will eventually be as cognisant of the usefulness of
exercise for cancer control as cardiologists already are for its
role in controlling heart disease.
Fremantle is the port city of Perth, which has the mediterranean
coastal feel with the accompanying climate, and is also a
historical reminder of Australia’s convict past. The conference
venue of the Esplanade Hotel combines close proximity to
historical buildings, tourist landmarks and a shopping precinct
to provide a fantastic setting for what we intend will be a most
memorable conference.
Finally no conference would be complete without exciting
social and networking events. Delegates can enjoy welcome
drinks on Thursday evening, breakfast sessions and a gala
conference dinner on Friday evening. We have provided a
varied, fun and exciting program of professional and social
experiences for you to fully appreciate your conference and
the hospitalities of Fremantle.
We hope you will join us in March in Fremantle to stretch your
boundaries relating both to the boundaries that we set
ourselves and the potential to broaden these with exposure to
new ideas and information. It also relates to the boundaries of
distance, which should be welcomed as an opportunity to
travel to our exciting State and participate in a conference held
in what we believe to be a unique and wonderful part of
Western Australia.
Expect no less than an Aussie adventure holiday of a lifetime
when you visit the Western Australian outback. This sun-kissed
land is where you’ll discover the real Australia - the Australia of
remote wilderness - it’s raw, still and spectacular
Visit the frontier town Kalgoorlie for an authentic gold mining
experience. The Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of
Fame just 7km north of Kalgoorlie highlights the past, present
and future of Australian mining. The museum cost $25 million
dollars to create and is open every day. Here, you can visit its
galleries, go on an underground tour, pan for gold and watch
gold being poured. Admission also includes a visit to Hannan’s
North Tourist Mine for an underground tour through old mine
shafts. The Golden Mile Railway, known as the Rattler, will take
you on a tour of Kalgoorlie - giving you a great overall
Perth
Get active and enjoy the sunshine, natural parklands and
