Becoming Self-Sustaining

St. John’s goal is to help our families 

return to our community as productive 

and empowered contributors, versus a 

continued drain on our government’s 

increasingly scarce resources. It is equally 

as important that we, the organization of 

St. John’s, consider how we can become 

less reliant on government funding and 

increasingly self-sustaining. I am happy to 

report that we have made much progress 

over the past three years. In 2007, over 

80% of our income came from the County 

of Sacramento. Thanks to your generosity, 

the County contribution, which has gone 

unchanged in the past three years, now 

represents only 42% of our income. While 

we are happy with this progress, we know 

we need to double our efforts, especially 

since the County will be cutting over $100 

million from its budget in this next fiscal 

year. 

This summer, St. John’s will launch a 

catering business that will not only propel 

us toward the goal of becoming self-sustaining, 

it capitalizes on a very successful 

initiative we put in place two years ago, 

our On the Job Training (OTJT) program. 

Through St. John’s catering company, our 

graduates will be trained in three of twelve 

disciplines within catering, over the course 

of six to nine months. Within one year, our 

goal for each graduate will be sustainable 

employment. 

Thanks to the MBA program at Sacramento 

State University, and to volunteers 

from Intel, our business plan for this 

venture is near completion. Thanks to John 

Healy of Foodlink, we have all of the equipment 

we need to launch the business. And 

with the help of Bobbin and Patrick Mulva- 

ney, Tina Reynolds and other community 

volunteers, not to mention our own Chef 

Matt, we have the talent in place to ensure 

this venture is successful. If you are interested

On a final note, we’d like to thank our 

2009 donors, whose names are listed on 

pages 12-15 in this newsletter. It is because 

of your generosity that we’ve been able to 

serve more than 1200 women and children 

this year... and more than 850 graduates! 

At the same time, your donations have 

enabled us to become much less reliant 

on government funding. On behalf of our 

clients, our graduates, our staff and our 

Board of Directors, thank you, thank you, 

thank you!

An invitation to St. John’s 4th Annual Celebrating Mothers Tea Party 

is included in this newsletter. This is our only annual event. It is very fun 

and has sold out every year since its inception! Please consider joining 

us this year as we honor some amazing mothers in our community 

including Sarah Krevans, Judy Baloney, Elaine Wright, Sofia Tsakopoulos 

and St. John’s alumna Rebecca Hahn! 

Our Mission: Support homeless women and children to 

advance from a point of crisis to a position of self-sufficiency.

St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children 

St. John’s Opens Winter Shelter for 

Families in Empty Bungalows at Mather 

Community Campus 

With the help of hundreds of volunteers 

and donors, we opened Sacramento 

County’s first ever Winter shelter program 

for women and children on December 26, 

2009! Thanks to the City of Rancho Cordova 

and the County of Sacramento, we are utilizing 

former Mather AFB military housing 

on the Mather Community Campus. Each 

winter shelter family (we currently have 

nine) lives in a small studio-type “bungalow” 

with their own kitchenette, bathroom 

and living and sleeping areas. Families were 

chosen to come to the Mather bungalows 

based on their success at St. John’s, which 

gives them an added bonus of four months 

with shelter at a time when transitional 

housing waiting lists are seven to eight 

months long. This program allows more 

independence for each family (one family 

under one roof versus 112 women and

children under one roof), while at the same 

time, each family continues to be held 

accountable for progressing toward selfsufficiency. 

We can’t say thank you enough to the 

volunteers who lent their helping hands 

and strong backs to clean the bungalows, 

perform maintenance, and to move truckloads 

of donated furniture into each unit. 

HomeAid led the cleaning and maintenance 

plan for the units and provided dozens 

of other volunteers. Bunk beds were 

donated by the Mattress Factory Outlet. 

Mattresses were donated by Sleep Train. 

Home Depot donated refrigerators and 

numerous materials needed to complete 

minor repairs. 

Each family continues to attend classes 

at St. John’s Shelter. Some go to outpatient 

AOD treatment. Some are attending 

community college. All assist in doing daily 

community chores. School age children attend 

an onsite after-school program organized 

by St. John’s. Sacramento County has 

provided a nurse who visits the bungalows 

twice weekly to provide immunizations, to 

see families for general health needs and to 

teach health education classes. All families 

are grateful for the chance to have housing 

through the winter and look forward to 

finding permanent or transitional housing 

soon. 

St. John’s Chef Matthew Caters Birthday Party, with an 

On the Job Training Client at His Side! 

On February 6th, our Head Chef Matthew Stauss catered Gregg Fishman’s 50th Birthday 

Party at his home. Mr. Fishman, who recently volunteered to prepare dinner at the 

Shelter through his company, the California Independent Systems Operators (CAISO), was 

very moved by what he saw at St. John’s. Instead of dining out for his 50th, he invited 20 

guests to attend a birthday party at his home and invited Chef Matt to cater the dinner. 

Matt brought along St. John’s graduate Darcy Pumphry, who had been working alongside 

him for several months in our On The Job Training Program. Darcy was able to share her 

talents, and her story, with the guests who now understand why Gregg requested, in lieu 

of 50th birthday gifts, that his guests make a donation to St. John’s! It was a great evening 

and a great success, and Gregg, we thank you for the honor of being a part of your special 

event! 

As an extension of its two-year On The Job Training Program, St. John’s will be launching 

a catering business over the summer. If you are interested in our services, or in helping

bungalows. I lived at the shelter as a 

resident for several months, and it is 

awesome to show the staff at the shelter 

that I am now able to give back to St. 

John’s as a responsible member of this 

community. It feels great to be trusted 

with this responsibility and most important 

to me is that my kids are so proud 

of me!” 

Renae: “For me, this is a good step 

in the right direction. Living here in the 

Mather bungalows gives me more independence, 

but I still have accountability. 

It allows me to have my girls come and 

visit and spend more quality time with 

them. They love having a space of their 

own to hang out with mom.”

bungalows since I can spend more quiet 

time with my daughter just reading 

and relaxing. I feel the Mather bungalow 

program provides more of a ‘real 

life’ experience. After completing this 

program, I will definitely be ready for 

permanent housing.” 

Brandi: “I love the routine at the 

Mather bungalows. It gives me the 

structure in my life that I need but 

allows me the time to accomplish my 

goals and have family time with my 12 

year old daughter.” 

Monique: “I enjoy living at the 

Mather bungalows since I have more of 

my own space to play with my 2 yr. old 

son. I really appreciate everything that 

has been donated to furnish my bungalow. 

It is so cozy and feels like home!” 

Bonnie: “The bungalows are a place 

I can call home; I feel safe and secure 

there. I am so grateful that St. John’s 

has allowed my family and I to reside 

there. They give me more support than 

I could have ever imagined. My children 

especially love St. John’s because they 

have participated in some field trips that 

I could not have provided for them, including 

Disney On Ice and Nature Walks. 

And, those big birthday parties are a 

plus. Thank you, St John’s!”

Thunder Valley Casino Donates Two 

Shuttle Buses to St. John’s! 

Thanks to the community’s generosity, we receive many opportunities to attend 

sporting events, theatrical and dance performances and other family-friendly excursions. 

Transportation has always been the largest barrier to taking advantage of these 

great opportunities. You can imagine how thrilled we were when we received the call 

that we would be receiving not one but two shuttle buses from Thunder Valley Casino 

and the United Auburn Indian Community. These buses will allow us to much more 

efficiently and cost effectively transport residents and alumnae to school, classes, community 

events and field trips. 

As if the donation of two shuttle buses weren’t enough, while principals from the 

organizations were touring the Shelter, they noticed an old and clunky television in 

our living room. By the next day, we had a brand new flat screen T.V. on which we were 

enjoying the footage from their visit! Thank 

you, Thunder Valley and UAIC for such 

enormous and life-changing Christmas 

presents! We would also like to recognize 

TDA Drivers, Inc. (TDA) truck driving 

schools for generously donating 40 hours 

of training for five employees to earn 

their Class B driver’s license, required 

to operate the shuttles. Our drivers 

were trained and ready for the 

shuttle’s first road trip to Arco Arena, 

where our residents saw a Kings 

game, thanks to our friends at Maloof 

Sports and Entertainment! 

Welcome New Board Member 

Claire Pomeroy 

Claire Pomeroy, M.D., M.B.A., UC Davis Vice Chancellor for Human 

Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine, is an 

expert in infectious diseases and a professor of internal medicine 

and microbiology and immunology. She oversees UC Davis Health 

System and all of its academic, research and clinical programs, including the School of 

Medicine, the new Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, the 800-member physician practice 

group and the 613-bed acute-care hospital known as UC Davis Medical Center. 

With an emphasis on academic excellence and social responsibility, Pomeroy fosters 

an institutional commitment to address the social determinants of health. She founded 

the Center for Reducing Health Disparities and led the establishment of Rural-PRIME, a 

program specifically designed to prepare physicians to practice in underserved rural communities. 

Addressing disparities in gender medicine, Pomeroy is principal investigator for 

the NIH-funded Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) 

program. 

Pomeroy received bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Michigan, 

then completed her residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and infectious 

diseases at the University of Minnesota. She earned an MBA from the University of 

Kentucky. She held faculty positions at the University of Minnesota and the University 

of Kentucky prior to her move to UC Davis. At the University of Kentucky, she served as 

Associate Dean for Research and Informatics and as a member of the University Board of 

Trustees. She lives in Sacramento with her husband, William Preston Robertson, a filmmaker 

and author. 


An Amazing Day, 

an Amazing Event 

Benefitting St. John’s! 

We would like to extend a huge thank 

you to Derek Lee and his 1st Touch Foundation 

for selecting St John’s to be the recipient 

of their Strikes for Kids Celebrity Bowling 

event, held on January 30 at Strikes in 

Elk Grove! Derek, a Sacramento native who 

plays first base for the Chicago Cubs, and 

his wife Christina, believe in giving back 

to help youth in need. After hearing about 

Sacramento’s growing homeless population, 

they chose St John’s as the beneficiary 

of this inaugural event. Over 20 professional 

athletes and celebrity bowlers participated. 

In addition to bowling, there was a 

billiards tournament, fabulous live music, 

silent auctions and many opportunities for 

guests to interact with, and get autographs 

from, celebrities. St John’s alumnae came 

out in force to volunteer at the event and 

to share their stories. Thanks to the support 

of both national and local sponsors, the 

event raised over $70,000 for our Children’s 

Program!

Meet Vicky, a Client at St. John’s 

Vicky’s life started spiraling downward about five years ago. 

It began with the death of her alcoholic father. During that 

same time, she was in an abusive relationship. To avoid going 

home to him, she started hanging out in casinos. That’s 

when things got worse for her and her then 9-year-old son, 

Shaen. She became addicted to gambling and started losing 

lots of money and her self-worth. Eventually she stole 

money from her job at the US Postal Service. She was soon 

caught and convicted. She served 32 1/2 months in federal 

prison. Her son stayed with her ex-boyfriend, then her cousin, 

and, finally, a Christian family took him in towards the end of 

her sentence. His life was also in turmoil. 

In prison, Vicky made a vow to herself to straighten out her life. 

When she was released from prison, INS picked her up at the prison’s front door. She spent 

a week and a half in county jail and was then released into society with no support system 

whatsoever. (Because she was released from INS, not prison, she didn’t get the benefit of 

halfway house like most people.) She got on the waiting list at St. John’s. In the meantime, 

her ex-boyfriend and his pregnant girlfriend offered her a place to stay... which she was 

able to endure for one month. Vicky knew that if she didn’t get out quickly, she would find 

herself involved, again, in a violent relationship. 

Vicky believes that it was through divine intervention that she was soon offered beds 

at St. John’s Shelter for her and her son. The minute she stepped into St. John’s, she was 

filled with relief. She knew this is where she and her son needed to be. At St. John’s Shelter, 

Vicky and her son are able to get the support and guidance they need, while building living 

skills. She appreciates the structured lifestyle that St. John’s offers, and her son is thriving. 

She is in our On The Job Training program and helping out in the warehouse, front 

and back office, and customer service. If you need help with anything, Vicky has quickly 

become our “go-to” person. In five years, she sees herself finishing school with a degree in 

Mechanical Engineering and having saved enough money to become a homeowner. 

Good-Bye to Our Beloved Josh! 

More than five years ago, Josh Deems was hired to work as a Youth Advocate 

at the young age of 16. Josh has been an instrumental part of our program 

ever since. He spearheaded our St. John’s athletic teams who competed against 

youth teams from other housing programs and initiated our youth alumni program. 

Whether snuggling with a toddler, playing basketball, or helping with homework, 

Josh’s passion and love for the children was evident. When children come back to visit 

after having graduated from the Shelter, inevitably, they dash in to look for Josh. His reach 

was tremendous, and he impacted the lives of thousands during 

his six years with us. 

This fall, Josh made the decision to serve his Country. He 

decided to enter the United States Army. His going away party 

in December was full of tears and heartfelt tributes. Although 

he will be sorely missed, we are so proud of Josh and wish him 

the very, very best. Mahatma Gandhi says, “You must be the 

change you wish to see in the world.” We want to thank Josh 

for giving 100% of his heart to St. John’s, for making a difference, 

for being the change.

Alumna Profile: 

Jessica 

Jessica Lee, 28, graduated from St. 

John’s Shelter in the fall of 2009. Prior 

to coming to St. John’s in May of that 

year, she had completed a residential 

treatment program to overcome her 

addiction to meth. 

Before seeking treatment, Jessica 

had spent many years “running the 

streets” and getting tangled up in the 

criminal justice system. During Jessica’s 

addiction, she had left behind two sons 

and one daughter for her mother to 

care for... another son had already been 

taken by CPS and placed in foster care. 

To get her life back on track and regain 

custody of all of her children, Jessica 

had to work hard in her program at St. 

John’s. During her time at the Shelter, 

Jessica graduated the Mercy PRN treatment 

program. She completed drug 

court, and she completed her case plan 

for CPS. In December 2008, Jessica was 

able to regain custody of all four of her 

children and move into a transitional 

housing program at the Mather Community 

Campus. 

Jessica is now a 

very busy mother 

to Tyree (9), 

Alexis (6), 

De’Shawn (5) 

and Richard 

(18 months). 

She is currentlyattending 

Sacramento 

City College 

and taking 12 units 

towards her goal of securing 

an AA in Human Services. Jessica 

believes strongly in giving back to the 

community which has helped her regain 

her life. She is a very active alumna and 

was recently elected to the Alumnae 

Association Board as vice president. She 

gives back to St. John’s by volunteering 

to lead New Client Orientation twice per 

month and is developing the curriculum 

to co-teach a class for current residents 

on empowerment. Jessica credits St. 

John’s Shelter with giving her the support 

she needed at a critical time in her 

life. In her words, “St. John’s Shelter was 

the bridge in my life that connected me 

back into society.”

St. John’s Saints

Carla Sloan, Volunteer Spotlight 

Carla, a recruiting coordinator at Progressive Insurance, is a highly valued member 

of our St. John’s volunteer family. For more than six months, Carla, with the support 

of her employer, has volunteered her expertise on a weekly basis in our 

Career Center and Computer Lab. For several months, she instructed 

our weekly Job Readiness Course for women wishing to re-enter 

the workforce. Now, she comes in every Wednesday evening to 

assist our clients with resume building. She has been a positive 

role model and mentor to many of our women. We are grateful 

to Carla and Progressive Insurance for their continued 

partnership and support of our program!

This holiday season was filled with 

exciting opportunities for the women and 

children. It is our hope that our clients 

will reflect on this holiday season not as 

the Christmas they were homeless, but 

the Christmas where they rode the Polar 

Express, went to the ballet, and saw The 

Singing Christmas Tree. Thank you to so 

many in the community for making these 

events happen and for creating memories that 

will last forever. 

We also want to thank Santa and his elves 

who spent Christmas morning with us. What a 

wonderful surprise it was to see them and to 

have them hand-deliver everyone’s gifts! Our 

clients will never forget Christmas Day 2009, 

and we are so grateful to Santa, his elves and 

all of you who donated gifts to make this the 

best Christmas ever!

various items that enabled us to 

provide over 30 food baskets to 

our alumnae, allowing them to 

create a traditional holiday meal of

Adopt-A-Family Program 

We would like to extend a huge THANK 

YOU to all the families, businesses, and 

organizations that supported our Adopt 

A Family program at Christmas. Thanks to 

your generosity, we were able to provide a 

wonderful Christmas for over 130 alumnae 

families. A special thank you goes out to 

the employees of Intel Corporation who 

adopted 50 families alone! Whether you 

adopted a family of one, or a family of nine 

(yes, we had a few large families!), the time 

and resources you spent ensuring that a 

family in need would have presents under 

the tree and food on the table means 

so much to them, and to us! “You are a 

blessing” was a common response when 

alumnae opened the door to receive their 

gifts. From all of us at St. John’s, thank you 

for blessing our extended family! 

Saturday Workshops with 

1st Covenant Church 

On January 23 and 30, women from 1st 

Covenant Church treated our women and 

children to a series of workshops teaching 

them fun new skills such as jewelry making 

and floral arranging to creating CD case 

calendars and gifts in a jar. These classes 

taught our clients 

to create homemade, 

affordable 

presents for 

friends and 

family. The 

children (and 

a few moms) 

also enjoyed 

dance lessons 

and face painting.

Mattresses On Board 

A new bed means so much more to our 

alumnae than just a soft place to lie their 

head at night. It is symbolic of their new life 

-- a better tomorrow they have worked so 

hard to create. Each month, we are blessed 

to receive a much anticipated delivery of 

new beds from our friends at Sleep Train. 

In addition, Sleep Train helped furnish our 

winter shelter program with 20 new beds!

We are looking for other strong volunteers 

who can help St John’s pick up and deliver 

beds and other furniture donations for our

Making Volunteering a 

Family Affair 

At St. John’s we strive to make every 

day a special day for residents, especially 

when it comes to celebrating the holidays. 

Not only do our residents benefit from 

your generous donations of time, talents, 

food and special gifts, it also provides local 

families and organizations with a unique 

experience to volunteer and create holiday 

memories. Year after year, we have groups 

return to share the holidays with us and 

we are so thankful that you have selected 

St. John’s as your home for the holidays.

Celebrating MLK Day 

Making MLK day “A Day On, Not a 

Day Off,” St. John’s was blessed to have 

a house full of volunteers dedicated 

to giving back to their community. 

St. John’s partnered with HandsOn 

Sacramento and Disney’s “Give a Day, 

Get a Day” program, resulting in 40 

volunteers helping with a variety of 

tasks including painting our conference 

room and career center, cleaning 

the kitchen, removing thousands 

of staples from our dining hall walls, preparing lunch, sorting 

donations and playing with the kids. We thank everyone for braving the pouring rain and 

sharing this day with us! That evening, we were treated to a fabulous dinner prepared by 

the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, who by the way, will be returning in March to 

educate our women through two workshops on HIV/AIDS awareness! Thanks to you all!

Miss Brittany, and it's all girls. We talk 

about girl stuff and it makes me feel great! 

Maddy (age 7): I like art class because I'm 

an artist and I draw good pictures. I also 

like giving my mom pretty gifts.

because we get to explore the world 

and how others help people around the

Career Education and Placement

It’s a New Year and a New Look for the Career 

Education and Placement Center 

The Career Education and Placement Center began the New Year with an internal facelift. 

With the help of community volunteers from Hands on Sacramento, the Career Center 

received a fresh coat of paint and an entirely new professional look and feel. Women from 

our St. John’s On the Job Training Program worked tirelessly to rearrange furniture and 

to organize individual work stations for computer training and classes. Thank you to our 

Community and Government Relations Coordinator, Rachele Burton, for coordinating this 

project and a special thank you to all the volunteers and St. John’s women who participated 

in this endeavor. 

We have gotten off to a busy start this year – in the month of January alone we had 

nearly a dozen women working on earning their GED, HS diploma or enrolled in local community 

colleges. We have five women presently participating in the CSUS Career Counseling 

Program. This program offers in-depth individual career counseling by up and coming 

professionals in the industry. The women who will graduate in May will be the sixth group 

of graduates to have participated in this program. We have women who have recently 

been employed in the community as well as many competitively employable women 

who are actively seeking full- and part-time employment. Many are looking for call-center 

employment, home care, housekeeping and clerical positions. Resumes are available upon 

request. 

The Career Education and Placement Center will continue to focus on career education 

and employment opportunities for our women. One of our most significant goals for 2010 

is to increase the number of women gaining employment. In addition to increasing our 

partnerships with employers in the region, we hope to provide employment opportunities 

through businesses we create within St. John’s organization. Our first such business is 

a catering company that we plan to launch over the coming summer!

New Computer and Life Skills Classes in the Career 

Education and Placement Center 

Nancy Pryor joined St. John’s as a volunteer 

in June of 2009 after graduating from 

college. She currently works for the Folsom 

Chamber of Commerce doing Marketing & 

Communications. Nancy teaches beginning 

and intermediate computer skills 

every Saturday morning, covering a full 

spectrum of computer programs that our 

clients need to return to school or to reenter 

the workforce. “Technology has been 

integrated throughout my life from an early 

age. I am privileged to be able to use those 

skills to help bridge the ‘digital divide’ that 

is so often a barrier between poverty and 

employment,” Nancy explained. 

Volunteers from Intel Corporation just

developed and launched a year-long seminar 

series with a broad range of topics to 

assist our women who are seeking employment 

opportunities. The “Skills For Life” 

series is comprised of monthly seminars 

and interactive workshops with topics 

ranging from Resume Writing and Dress for 

Success to Balancing Work, Family and Life. 

On February 20, over 12 clients attended 

“Constructive Confrontation,” taught by Suzanne 

Hawbaker , an Intel trainer, and two 

additional Intel volunteers. Additionally, 

Intel will be providing weekly volunteers 

to assist clients with computer literacy 

and typing skills. A special thank you to

Welcome to Our New 

Adult Services Manager 

Sanford (Sandy) Robinson has recently 

joined us as the Adult Services 

Manager for St. John’s Shelter. Sandy 

served as the Director of the Specialized 

Treatment and Recovery Services 

(STARS) in Sacramento, California 

from 2001-2008. The STARS program 

is an innovative, nationally recognized 

substance abuse case management 

program that serves three Sacramento 

County Drug Courts: Dependency 

Drug Court, Early Intervention Family 

Drug Court and Juvenile Drug Court. 

In addition, he served as the liaison 

between alcohol and drug treatment, 

child protective services and the three 

Drug Courts. 

For almost two decades, Sandy 

has been involved with alcohol and 

drug programs specializing in several 

different populations groups including 

adolescents, HIV/AIDS and adult 

drug offenders. He has designed and 

implemented several programs for 

public schools to reduce substance 

abuse and has 

been at the forefront 

of promoting 

motivational 

intervention techniques. 

Sandy has spoken 

at numerous 

national conferences 

around the country including 

Washington D.C., Baltimore, Boston, 

Orlando, Memphis, and Seattle. He 

received his Bachelor’s degree from 

California State University, Sacramento. 

Sandy is a Registered Addiction 

Specialist and is pursuing a 

Master’s degree at the University of 

San Francisco.

Meet Our Newest Team Members 

When Belyn Richards first came to St. John’s, she had nothing. CPS 

came into her life and gave her an ultimatum. Do as they requested, or 

lose custody of her three young daughters. Miraculously (in her words), 

she turned it around. Belyn and her family graduated from St. John’s 

66 days later, with stable housing. Soon thereafter, she graduated from 

Strategies For Change, STARS, Making Parenting A Pleasure, and Drug 

Court. Then, she was able to close her CPS case. 

Belyn recently graduated, with a 4.0 GPA and honors, from Intercoast College, in the 

Alcohol and Drug Studies Counseling program. Belyn has two years continuous clean time 

and is currently an Alcohol and Drug Counselor with adolescents during the day and is 

now a proud member of St. John’s Customer Service team in the evenings! 

Belyn is an inspiration to all of us. She says she owes it all to her higher power and 

thanks Him every day for blessing her with the opportunity to have come through St. 

John’s. It was here that she gained stability and developed the skills and desire to become 

self-sufficient. She loves having the opportunity to give back at St. John’s, in particular, 

interacting with those who aren’t just looking for a hand out, but a hand up. Belyn would 

like to thank all of the staff and volunteers at St. John’s for helping to propel her to where 

she is today. She also thanks her mother, Linda Artis, for her constant love and support! 

Joe Klont is St. John’s new Deputy Director of Children’s Services. Joe 

has recently moved to Roseville after spending the last 13 years in Denmark. 

He is originally from Michigan and is the proud father of a 10-yearold 

girl and 7-year-old boy. His education includes a BS in Public Health 

Education and Health Promotion from Central Michigan University and a 

BA in Social Education (Pedagogy) from Gladsaxe Institute for Social Education 

(Denmark). His career is filled with years of working with youth 

as a sports coordinator and a fitness instructor. Although his role at St. John’s is unlike any 

other he has held, he believes that his personable approach and positive attitude will be 

great assets to the Program. He relishes the chance to make a difference in the lives of the 

women and children of St. John’s! 

Alisha Lewis was born and raised in Sacramento. She is currently 

attending Sacramento City College where she is taking classes in both 

business and early childhood education. Her dream is to open a daycare 

center for children. She enjoys spending time with her 3-year-old son, in 

particular taking him to the park and doing art projects. She is happy to 

be part of the St. John’s front office team! 

Tumara Setia started her career as an AOD counselor. She provided 

counseling and case management services at Sacramento County Boys 

Ranch, Warren E. Thornton Youth Center as well as Sacramento County’s 

Adult Drug Court. Her passion is in service work, and she always roots for 

the underdog. She enjoys working at St. John’s in Customer Service for 

two primary reasons: she loves the population we serve and she believes 

in our mission statement -- to support homeless women with children to advance from a 

point of crisis to a position of self-sufficiency! 

Fourth daughter of a Marine, Cindy Eckels was born in San Diego 

and travelled with her parents until age 5. From there, she grew up in 

Maryland. She is the mother of one and a grandmother of one. Cindy 

has worked as an administrative assistant in the mental health field for 

over eight years and specialized in working with the mentally ill homeless 

populations. She has become passionate about helping people 

help themselves to accomplish their goals. While working as part of the 

St. John’s front office team, she is attending college to further her understanding of the 

human mind -- how and why we tick the way we do. She loves to travel, read, watch old 

movies and spend time with her family and friends, including her grandson and her dog, 

Skipper!

2010 Is Off to a Great 

Start with Total Body 

Fitness! 

Braving the cold weather and threat of 

rain, over 500 athletes participated in our 

New Year’s Duathlon on January 2, organized 

by Total Body Fitness (TBF). While the race 

was free to enter, participants were asked 

to make a voluntary donation to St John’s, 

resulting in $4,000 and many cases of baby formula! Special thanks to 

board members Veronica Knudson and Janelle Fallan for joining us in collecting 

donations and raising awareness for St John’s. 

We have partnered with TBF again this year and are proud to announce 

a Triathlon training program this spring, culminating in a triathlon in July. St. 

John’s board members, clients, staff and alums will be participating in this 

program, and we need you to participate as well. Whether you are a seasoned 

athlete or simply want to accomplish 

a new milestone in 2010, please 

join us! Our goal is to raise $80,000 

through this event, and we can’t do it 

without you! A flyer on the program is 

included in this newsletter. For additional

Our Donation Policies and Hours 

We are so grateful for your help in clothing and housing 

more than 1,200 women and children so far this year. 

Please note that due to limited staffing, we can only 

accept donations during the following hours: 

l Tuesday: 1-6 pm 

l Wednesday: 1-6 pm 

l Thursday: 1-6 pm 

l Saturday: 10-4 pm 

Lastly, please note that due to a combination of factors 

ranging from state regulation to need, we cannot 

accept the following donations: 

l Used Toys 

l Happy Meal Toys 

l Office Equipment 

l Used Baby Equipment 

l Soiled/Heavily Worn Clothing 

l Non-Essential Household Items
