b. Gabions – Gabions are wire boxes that are filled with rock and rubble to provide<br />

armoring for the site. The fill can usually be found onsite for small projects with<br />

large projects requiring rock to be transported to the site. They are sturdy,<br />

repairable structures that have the tendency to look like manmade walls. Similar<br />

to Reno Mattresses, Gabions are typically a higher cost alternative and are labor<br />

intensive to install. Figure 5.10 is an illustration of Gabion baskets being<br />

constructed.<br />

c. Rip Rap – Rip Rap is durable materials that are often naturally placed along the<br />

shores of rivers and streams. Common rip rap are rocks and boulders that are<br />
