The goals of the Academic Advisement Center are to:<br />

• Inform students about educational and career options, graduation requirements, and<br />

academic policies and procedures;<br />

• Assist students in personal and professional growth and development;<br />

• Aid students in the creation of educational programming consistent with their interests,<br />

abilities, and career aspirations;<br />

• Monitor student performance and progression each semester;<br />

• Promote relationships with students that are characterized by trust, mutual respect, and<br />

openness; and<br />

• Refer students to the available campus resources.<br />

Mission<br />

The mission of the Office of Disability Support Services is to ensure that students with disabilities have<br />

full access to all programs and services at <strong>Bowie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>. This Office also seeks to educate<br />

faculty, staff, and administrators regarding disabilities in an effort to create greater sensitivity towards<br />

individuals who are disabled.<br />

Philosophy <strong>State</strong>ment<br />

Students with disabilities will be assessed by the same standards that apply to all students. The faculty<br />

is not expected to lower its expectations or its standards. The various services and accommodations<br />

provided by Disability Support Services are designed to give students every opportunity to be full<br />

participants in the academic process. Accordingly, Disability Support Services seeks to minimize or<br />

eliminate the need for faculty to provide accommodations for students with disabilities. This approach<br />

emphasizes the students’ responsibilities and independence. This will allow the faculty to devote its<br />

attention to instruction. Additionally, Disability Support Services also provides an appropriate level of<br />

counseling regarding accommodation services.<br />

It is the policy of <strong>Bowie</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> to make sure that all of its services, facilities, and<br />

accommodations are made accessible to individuals with disabilities in accordance with the Americans<br />

with Disabilities Act.<br />

Office of Testing Services<br />

The Office of Testing Services coordinates and administers placement tests and the English Proficiency<br />

Examination. All first‐time freshmen and transfer students who have not completed their English,<br />

reading, and mathematics requirements are required to take placement examinations prior to<br />

registering for classes. Performance on the placement examinations determines the courses in which<br />

students must enroll. All students, including first‐time adult learners, register for the courses in which<br />

they are placed.<br />

The English Proficiency Examination is a graduation requirement which must be satisfied by all students<br />

receiving a bachelor’s degree from the <strong>University</strong>. Native and transfer students should take the<br />

examination upon completion of English 101 and English 102. However, transfer students who<br />
