THURGOOD MARSHALL LIBRARY<br />

The Library offers a variety of materials and services to its users. Information about what is available in<br />

the collections is available through the Library’s online public access catalog. Additionally, electronic<br />

databases offer a vast amount of information. Library orientation and instruction in the use of its<br />

resources are available in formal and informal settings.<br />

Current library holdings number more than 300,000 items. The Library subscribes to more than 700<br />

periodicals, newspapers, and other serials in paper format. Access to thousands of periodicals, many<br />

offering full‐text articles, is available electronically through Research Port. A collection of reference<br />

materials, periodicals, and items reserved for class assignments is also available. The Library includes<br />

study carrels, a group study room, and two instruction classrooms.<br />

Thurgood Marshall Library is able to borrow any items requested by students, faculty, and staff that are<br />

not readily available. The materials are borrowed from other libraries in the <strong>University</strong> System of<br />

Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) through a cooperative lending agreement, or from other<br />

libraries world‐wide through formal interlibrary loan agreements. Members of the <strong>Bowie</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> community may borrow materials directly from libraries of the USMAI libraries with a current<br />

<strong>Bowie</strong>Card that has been activated at the Thurgood Marshall Library circulation desk.<br />

The Thurgood Marshall Library is dedicated to providing state‐of‐the‐art information technology for use<br />

by its patrons. The Library is also equipped for wireless Internet access.<br />

OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES<br />

The Office of Graduate Studies guides and directs, administers, and manages the <strong>University</strong>’s graduate<br />

programs. Graduate programs are designed to meet the needs of students seeking professional<br />

advancement, career mobility, or further enrichment. Graduate Studies also provides leadership for<br />

the Graduate Council and the Graduate Assistantship Program.<br />

Courses are offered in 16‐week sessions meeting once a week in the evenings and on the weekends or<br />

in a time‐shortened format of two concentrated eight‐week sessions in the regular academic semester<br />

and in weekend workshop formats, both on‐ and off‐campus. Courses are offered during the year at<br />

various sites in Maryland. The workshops are designed for and geared toward the interest of working<br />

adults in industry, government, education and social service agencies.<br />

Whether students wish to pursue a degree or a certificate, improve their professional capabilities, or<br />

enrich their personal lives, they may choose from among the many graduate offerings at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
