BARN FINDS Car Show or Research Event True Survivors By Arvid Svendsen The second annual Survivor Collector Car event was probably best summarized by its founder, Bloomington Gold CEO David Burroughs. “This is not a car show,” he says. “It’s a research event.” To the uninformed, this summertime gathering might seem random, even confusing. But the bonds of fellowship were strong as admirers of original, unrestored cars came to increase their knowledge of automotive history. The Survivor Collector Car event provides three levels of certification for original, unrestored cars. Judges determine the legitimacy of an original car by asking the question, How much appears refinished, replaced, altered, or deteriorated past new Four areas are examined: exterior, interior, underhood, and chassis. If the car is deemed 90 percent original or better in three of those four areas, it receives a ZZenith Survivor certification from Bloomington Gold. A 75 percent original car is granted a Freeze Frame Survivor certification, and a 50 percent original car is given a Limited Survivor certification. The value of the Survivor certification, Burroughs explains, is its 2 1 4 3 1Dan Schmidt of Ohio ordered this ’68 Shelby G.T. 500KR new in May 1968. The car came with a 428 motor and C6 automatic. “I parked it in 1970,” he explains. He has also meticulously cared for the car, which is the only Shelby that has been judged worthy of ZZenith Survivor certification. 2Bill and Barbara Luckenbill own this jaw-dropping, 12,300-mile ’65 Oldsmobile F85, which had been in the original owner’s family in Indianapolis until 1996. Powered by a 225ci V-6 with a three-speed manual transmission, the deluxe interior post car (one of 109) was originally purchased to receive a V-8 transplant. However, Luckenbill found among the car’s papers a letter from the original owner that asked future owners not to disturb the car’s originality. He agreed, and the car earned ZZenith certification. 3Dan Espen drove his ’63 Pontiac Bonneville from Wisconsin to Illinois to attend the Survivor Car event. The trip achieved two milestones: The Bonneville’s odometer reached the 9,000-mile mark, and the car earned ZZenith certification. Espen stumbled across this car, powered by a 389 four-barrel motor with single exhaust, while browsing the Internet. The only upgrade on the car was a previous owner’s addition of the spinner hubcaps, which Espen believes were available in 1963. 4David Dodd is the original owner of this ’68 L78 SS396 Chevelle. It took him six weeks to figure out how he wanted to order his new Chevelle, but he finally decided on the 396ci/375hp motor, 3.73 Posi rear, and M22 fourspeed transmission. “It’s my first new car, I liked it, and I’ve kept it ever since,” says Dodd. “I have two sons and two grandsons, and hopefully one of them will keep the car after me.” The Chevelle was handed ZZenith certification by the judges. 36 MUSCLE CAR REVIEW DECEMBER 2009 DECEMBER 2009 MUSCLE CAR REVIEW 37
