Greetings West Palm Beach! 

Winter is such a fantastic time of year in West Palm Beach. Balmy temperatures, 

ocean breezes, clear, cloudless sunny days – we are the envy of our neighbors 

to the north. And what a great time to come outside and enjoy our parks and 

recreation facilities! 

As we gear up for our winter sports and recreation activities, consider enrolling 

in a program for yourself or your children. The key to living a good, long life 

is doing it in a healthy way. What better way than to instill the discipline of 

exercise and spending time in the great outdoors with our children. Enough 

Wii and X-box 360 – shut off the TV and go for a walk in the park! 

Thumb through the pages of our brochure and find a class or sports activity that interests you. Want to 

teach your children the fundamentals of sports – we’re starting a new Flag Football program in January. 

How about an exercise class for the adults in the family Try Zumba at South Olive or Howard Park or 

Line Dancing at Gaines Park. Want an outdoor challenge Sign up for a boot camp at one of our parks. 

Professional instructors sure put you through a workout! 

Did you know all of our community centers have rooms for rent for private functions You should stop by 

the Mary V. McDonald-Wilson Center at Gaines Park – we can host as many as 240 people for a sit-down 

dinner or as few as you want to invite to a baby shower! 

Looking for some fun free activities Our Party for the People happens every Thursday night on Clematis 

St. And we’ll be moving our Sunday on the Waterfront monthly concert series back to the Great Lawn 

this winter. Join us the third Sunday of the month for great live music! Check out all of our waterfront 

happenings by going to www.wpb.org/waterfront. And be sure to stop by the Lake Pavilion to see if it 

might suit your next party or get together. We’ve lowered the rates for this beautiful location. 

Perhaps you just want to sit back and enjoy the peace and solitude of our open spaces. We have swings 

and benches along the waterfront and wonderful picnic pavilions at many of our parks. Relax and enjoy 

our beautiful city. As you plan your activities or just want to spend time in West Palm’s great outdoors,

Adventure Day Camps 

Program Description: Recreation day camp for children with 

special needs. Activities included sports, games, crafts, cooking 

and field trips. Youth must be able to maintain a staff to 

participant ratio of 1:3 for all activities, self help needs and 

outings to qualify. Youth must be completely potty trained, able 

to dress themselves including after water activities. Must be able 

to transition with the ratio 1:3 to qualify for the grant program. 

Ages: 6 - 16 

Days: Tuesday - Friday and Monday - Friday 

Dates: January 3 - 6 and March 19 - 23 

Time: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm 

Fee: $100 

Before and Aftercare $30 / week 7:30 am - 8:30 am and 

4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Youth with significant behavioral needs must have a behavioral 

support staff which is to be paid and provided by the parent 

and be present with the child at all times including check in 

and out. You must pre register five business days prior to camp

Arc Recreation Department

Inclusion Camp Arc Support Staff 

An Arc support staff will be provided to certain recreation 

day camps in Palm Beach County up to eight hours per day. 

The Arc support staff support encourages active participation, 

socialization, adaptations and minor behavioral modification. 

Arc Support staff are not a modification to the general ratio up 

to 1:18. You must qualify for an Arc support staff. 

*Must be completely potty trained and able to transition 

adaptations for physical, visual and hearing impaired please 

contact the center you wish to register for and adhere to all 

their registration guidelines. 

Grades: K - 6 

Days: Monday - Friday 

Dates: Some single days out and school breaks 

(dates will vary depending on location)

Ages: 18 and over (have graduated from high school) 

Days: Two Fridays a month and some Saturdays 


Time: Times vary, 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm 

Fees: Varies, $3 - $25 according to program and outing

Good Times Club Program 

Adults who are visually impaired participate in special events, 

dances and community outings. Call to register for a schedule.

Leisure Alternatives 

Adults with special needs participate in a variety of activities,

Wednesday Programs 

Adults with special needs participate in a variety of fitness 

activities, nature hikes, cooking and craft projects. A 1:10 staff

West Palm Beach City Docks 

The new city docks are now open to the public for daily use at no charge to allow boaters easy access to our downtown. The 

docks are open on a first come first served basis from 5:00 am to midnight. We ask boaters to register their vessel with a dock 

attendant or by calling (561) 822-2001 and enjoy yourself downtown or at City Place. 

All three docks offer free secure tie ups for boaters. Our middle dock at the foot of South Clematis is 30 feet wide and spans 

440 feet into the water offering pedestrians a spectacular view of the West Palm skyline. This is a one of a kind pier that features 

underwater ecosystems, planters with native plants, seating areas under colorful umbrellas and street lights for night strolls.

Currie Park Pavilions 

Currie Park is located on the Intracoastal Waterway on 

North Flagler Drive. This park includes the only boat ramps 

in the City, two medium shelters with grills, playground, 

large multi-purpose field and the MLK Memorial. This park 

offers a beautiful vista for family and friends to gather.

This park is also the home of the Palm Beach Zoo, the South 

Florida Science Museum and the West Palm Beach Garden

Gaines Park 

This park offers the most diverse facilities of all. Conveniently 

located at Australian Avenue and 15th Street, situated behind 

the Community Center and Municipal Pool you will find five 

picnic shelters with barbecue grills and numerous sports 

facilities. 

Howard Park 

This park is located at the main entryway to downtown West 

Palm Beach. Just 1/8 of a mile south of Okeechobee Blvd. on 

Parker Avenue, this newly renovated park’s amenities include 

a picnic shelter with barbecue grills, playground, exercise path, 

and numerous sports facilities.

The City of West Palm Beach Parks and Recreation 

Department is pleased to introduce Online Registration. 

This system will enable you to register your household 

members (family) and yourself online for many programs 

and activities offered by the department. While the 

number of programs available for online registration is 

limited during the initial launch, look for more activities 

to be added online in the coming months. 

What Can I Do 

• Browse activity and pass membership listings 

• Search for activities by type, age range, location, 

and other criteria 

• Look up details about any activity, (e.g. prices, 

dates, times, locations, or even current 

enrollment numbers) 

In addition, registered individuals 

and households can: 

• Enroll for many of our classes, activities, and 

pass memberships 

• Check on class availability 

• Renew memberships 

• Print a transaction history 

• Reprint old receipts 

Using the Online Registration System 

If you only wish to view program activities, you may 

browse activities as a Guest. However, to enroll in 

programs and pay online, you must register for an 

online account and receive a User Name and Password. 

To apply for an account: 

If you have previously enrolled in City of West Palm 

Beach Parks and Recreation classes, call (561) 804-4900 

to establish your online account. 

If you are a new customer who has not previously 

enrolled in classes take your State of Florida 

identification card or driver’s license to one of our 

community centers to establish your online account. 

After applying, you will receive your User Name and 

Password in no more than five working days. Once you 

receive your User Name and Password, you may LOGIN. 

However, the Online Registration 

system DOES NOT allow you to: 

• Register individuals from other households 

• Register children who do not meet the specific 

requirements for a class 

• Refund a class 

• Transfer to another class 

• Please note that not all classes, activities, and

GWP offers unique educational and guided recreational 

opportunities on the edge of the vast, 20-square-mile wetlands 

resource. The preserve was historically the headwaters of the 

Everglades system. It is the City of West Palm Beach’s Water 

Catchment Area. 

Managed by the City of West Palm Beach Public Utilities 

Department, GWP provides fresh drinking water to more than 

130,000 people in West Palm Beach, the Town of Palm Beach 

and the Town of South Palm Beach. The preserve includes 

nature center pavilions, meandering boardwalk trails, hiking, 

biking, canoeing, programs and more! 

Apoxee Park, “Beyond Tomorrow” in the Miccosukee language, 

located to the southeast of GWP, is a natural water reclamation

Phipps Skate Park is the place to be. We have a 23,000 square 

foot concrete base surface with metal ramps and decks made 

with Skate Lite Pro skating surface. We are an outdoor facility, 

so please check the weather before you come to the park. 

Helmets with a functioning strap are mandatory (rentals 

available) and a waiver must be on file for all park users. 

Waivers must be signed by a skater’s parent or legal guardian 

if under the age of 18.

The Aquatic Center is an eight lane 25 meter facility with two 

deep water slides, a wading pool and a splash pad that is 

accessible from the pool deck and the park. Our facility is fully 

accessible and offers programming for all ages and abilities.

Learn to Swim Classes 

The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around 

the water is to learn to swim. Drowning remains the second 

leading cause of injury-related death for children ages one to 

12 years. 

The City of West Palm Beach has proudly partnered with the 

Palm Beach County Drowning Prevention Coalition in an effort 

to educate about water safety, prevent drowning and provide 

swim lessons free of charge to qualified candidates in the form 

of a voucher called “Drowning Prevention Bucks.” To see if 

you qualify for Drowning Prevention Coalition Bucks, please 

call (561) 616-7068. 

Parent and Child Learn to Swim Program: 

The seahorse parent nurtures and watches over it’s child until 

they are ready to swim independently. This course will do the 

same. Our instructors will teach parents the skills to use play as 

a form of learning to provide a fun environment in the water. 

Hands on parental involvement is instrumental in the learning 

process to reinforce your child’s development of water skills. A 

child that is three years of age may move into the preschool 

courses after demonstrating skill proficiency. 

Seahorse 1 (Parent and Child - Level 1) 

Six months through approximately 3 years old that have no 

water experience of one previous session of a water adjustment 

session. 

Seahorse 2 (Parent and Child - Level 2) 

Six months through approximately 3 years who have completed 

Level 1 or who can demonstrate the completion requirements 

for Level 1. 


The Preschool Learn to Swim Program: 

The preschool learn to swim program is designed for children 

4 - 5 years of age. Children three years old are welcome to 

participate after a brief assessment from facility staff. All learn 

to swim skills include water safety topics to help participants 

be safe in and around the water. If you are unsure which 

course is appropriate for your child’s current ability, please call 

the facility and we will schedule a free assessment to place 

them in the correct level. To ensure proper placement of your 

child, on-line registration is not available for learn to swim. 

Starfish (Preschool - Level 1) 

Although many starfish start off slow in the water, by the end 

of the course they will shine. Among the skills taught are: 

water entry and exiting, submerging mouth, nose and eyes, 

and gliding on the front and back. 

Clown Fish (Preschool - Level 3) 

Just like clownfish know basic swimming skills, they still like 

to stay close to home. This course is for children that have 

learned basic skills but are not yet ready to venture out into the 

big blue water. Among the skills taught are: floating, opening 

eyes under water and retrieving an object, treading water and 

combining arm and leg actions. 

Tadpoles (Preschool - Level 2) 

Tadpoles learn the fundamentals of swimming on their way 

to earning their swimming legs and arms. Among the skills 

taught are: bobbing, demonstrating front and back glides 

independently for 15 seconds, changing direction while 

swimming, and demonstrating all the skills from the previous 

levels without assistance. 

Youth Swimming Program 

Children begin the youth swimming program around six years 

of age. Four and five year olds may be enrolled if they have 

been previously enrolled in our preschool program or can 

pass a skills assessment. In order to move to the next level 

the participants must successfully complete the previous level 

or be able to demonstrate all the completion requirements. 

Please remember that unless a child is practicing skills learned 

in a class they may lose their proficiency to demonstrate 

required skills. Please do not place your child in a higher level 

course unless they have been practicing the required skills. If 

you are unsure of the proper level, please contact us for a free 

assessment of your child’s skills. To ensure proper placement 

of your child, on-line registration is not available for learn to 

swim. 

Waterbugs (Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills) 

Welcome to the world of swimming. We will increase students 

comfort in and around the water with socialization techniques 

and creative water play. 

Guppies (Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills) 

By teaching floating without support and learning beginning 

arm and leg actions in this class, our skilled instructors are 

laying the foundation for your child to become water safe. 

Turtles (Level 3 - Stroke Development) 

By providing additional guided instruction and practice, your 

child will learn to coordinate the front and back crawl and be 

introduced to skills to help others. 

Sea Otters (Level 4 - Stroke Improvement) 

Breaststroke, butterfly, elementary backstroke and care for 

a choking victim are among the skills introduced during this 

course. 

Dolphins (Level 5 - Stroke Refinement) 

Coordination and refinement of strokes are the primary focus 

of this course. Life safety skills such as survival swimming and 

rescue breathing are introduced and practiced. 

Sharks (Level 6 - Personal Water Safety) 

This course consists of the group participant choice of Personal 

Water Safety: teaches skills necessary to be safe in and around

Lifeguard Training 

Show the world what you can do. Prepare for college and a 

career by developing leadership and communication skills and 

be a hero by learning lifesaving skills such as first aid and CPR 

and have fun and earn money at a job you love. Lifeguard 

Training teaches you the skills and knowledge needed to 

prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants must 

pass a prerequisite swim test which includes: swimming 300 

yard continuously using front crawl and breaststroke, swim 

20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a 

minimum of seven feet, retrieve a 10 pound object and swim 

20 yards back to the starting point within one minute and 

40 seconds. Course length is 31 hours. The course fee includes 

a $10 non-refundable pretest fee. There is an additional 

American Red Cross Certification fee of $35.
