Limestone Smiles to open soon
Coleman Dental
expanding to
second location
Dr. Alan and Lisa Coleman at Limestone Smiles, across from Walmart on Highway 72.
Back in 1969, the then 12-year-old Alan
Coleman sat in the dental chair of local retired
dentist Dr. Walter Walker waiting for
his six-month exam. While waiting, he amused
himself by trying to memorize the “tooth eruption”
chart hanging on the wall.
He remembers thinking, “How could anyone remember
all of that”
It was in that moment when a 12-year-old set his
sights on dental school.
The story is almost the same for his wife, Lisa
Coleman. “While getting impressions for braces
in the fourth grade, the hygienist began to mix a
material that reminded me of BONDO,” an auto
body filler material she helped her father with
while he worked on antique cars. “My first
thought was, ‘I can do that’” she said.
Fast forward to the team we have today, Dr Alan
and Lisa Coleman. Surrounding themselves with
what they consider the best ladies and gentlemen
possible. The Colemans have built a team
of five doctors, eight hygienists, six dental assistants,
and five ladies that handle everything from
your appointment to confirming your insurance
claims are filed correctly. Dr. Coleman and Lisa
take pride in the fact that everyone at Coleman
Dental has a thirst for knowledge and loves their
patients as if they were family.
“Because of our dedication to this community’s
dental health, we have grown beyond our expectations,”
said Dr. Coleman.
TR Electrical moves into new complex
Athens business expands to 4,000 feet of floor space
ne of Limestone County's
fastest growing businesses, TR
Electrical LLC, recently moved
into a new office and warehouse that
includes 4,000 square feet of floor
space.
TR Electrical, owned and operated by
the father and son team of Tim Bauer
and Robbie McDowell, is now located
at 1631 L. Gray Blvd. in Athens between
Sears and Advance Auto, just
off U.S. 72 West. Tim and Robbie
would like to thank all their customers
that have made it possible for
us to expand and complete this new
office and warehouse complex. TR
Electrical now employs 16 people including
Robbie’s wife, Amber Mc-
Dowell, as bookkeeper.
The new building was constructed by
Premier Structures Inc., of Athens. TR
Electrical was formerly located at 101
E. Lee Street.
TR Electrical was started in December,
2007 and has steadily grown in a
weak economy. They now do work in
all of Northern Alabama and Southern
Tennessee. Office hours are from
7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bauer worked at the General Motors
Delphi plant in Limestone County for
more than 30 years before retiring in
early 2007. McDowell was an experienced
electrician with Bobby Terry
Company when the two decided to go
into business for themselves. The
business is named after both father
and son.
"We've had some stressful times, but
overall it has worked out well," Bauer
said.
Today, TR Electrical is one of the
largest electrical contractors in
Athens and Limestone County. Bauer
credits that to a hard working staff of
devoted employees and faithful customers.
"We feel fortunate in a weak economy
to have the amount of business we've
had," he said recently. “God has truly
blessed us.”
TR Electrical provides electrical work
for commercial, residential, and industrial
applications. Some of their
most recent major work includes
building churches, stores, restaurants,
offices, and homes. TR Electrical
currently works with the following
residential contractors: Keith Griffin
Contractors Inc., of Athens, Brown
and Meers Homes LLC in Madison,
Legacy Southern Homes, Huntsville,
and KJB Construction Inc., of Taft,
Tenn.
On the commercial side, TR Electrical
LLC is now completing work on two
new churches, Bethel Church of
Christ with Preston Builders, and
Lakeview Methodist Church with
Scott Construction. Both of these
jobs are in Athens. The company is
also completing plans with RDB Contractors
for construction of a local
medical facility. TR Electrical is also
involved in a large industrial project
at the Electricfil Corporation plant in
Elkmont.
You can read more about these projects
on their website: www.trelectrical.com.
Tim and Robbie are always
looking for new business. If you are
THE SONNY SIDE
He loves the pond, but hates a bath
He loves to
go swimming
in
the not so clean
pond, but hates
Sonny Turner to be bathed
with the hose back at home.
Just what is going on with our
Bulldog, Bubu, is anybody’s
guess at this point. But, he literally
can’t stand that cool
bath we give him to keep
clean.
In the hot summer he will
make two, maybe three trips
daily to the old murky pond in
the pasture behind our home. I
believe he does it to keep cool
as the temperatures rise. But,
pull that shampoo out and
grab the hose, he clams up
and stresses out.
I’ve talked to some friends who
have dogs, and they say their
animals act like that, too. A
bath is a no-no, but they love
to go into water on their own.
ubu will go swimming up to
is nose. Sometimes, he will
ven go under the water. He
oves it.
they had a little mishap with
who loves to ride in the jeep,
tried to jump out while the jeep
was in motion and suffered a
broken front leg. That happened
on a weekend and
Danny and Debra had to take
her to Decatur for emergency
attention since all the vets in
Athens were out. That one visit
only a fraction of the cost since
more visits to the dog doctor
will be forthcoming.
Whether these pets are worth
the cost is debatable, but
when you become attached to
them, it’s hard to let go.
Bubu is scheduled for a doctor’s
he has been having eye
problems. But we have already
discussed it, and come to the
conclusion that a 10-year-old
A step back in time
Carwile’s barbershop still going after 65 years
y Sonny Turner
aurice Wayne Carwile was a
young lad when he joined
his father at Carwile Barershop
in 1951. He didn’t start out
utting hair either. He was the shoe
hine boy.
It was my first job, and it was a
ood way for me to get out of the
ields from chopping cotton. I
hined shoes here,” Carwile said.
1964,” he said. “But it started
falling off when The Beatles came
in.” The Beatles, as you will recall,
was the long-haired English singing
group that took American by storm
in 1964.
Mr. Bill cut his first head of hair at
the barbershop on March 7, 1947.
He died in 1992.
There were several other wellknown
Athens barbers who cut hair
Wayne’s shop still has the original cash
register. He said you can see one just like it
when Floyd the barber cuts hair on the Andy
Griffin Show television reruns.
ayne was a student at Athens Colege
in 1959 when he joined his faher,
Bill Carwile, for good in 1959.
ow, he is the only barber at the
arbershop located on Marion
treet in Athens just north of the
imestone County Courthouse
quare.
arwile’s Barbershop was once a
ooming business in Athens. Wayne
nd three other barbers cut hair,
ut now it’s up to Wayne because
e is the only one left. He still loves
is job even though the hair cutting
usiness is not what it used to be.
It was best here from 1950 to
at Carwile’s. One was Bobby Davis,
who was well known for his flat-top.
Davis went on to start his own barbershop,
Bob’s Place, that is now
run by his sons, Joe and Mitch
Davis, that is located one street to
the west of Carwile’s. Another was
Alvis Shireman, who also later
started his own business, Shireman’s
Barbershop.
“I’ve been getting my hair cut here
for quite a while,” said Daniel
Morash, of Athens. “The reason I
come to him (Wayne) is because he
is the best man in town for a flattop.
I like the way he cuts my hair.”
Wayne Carwile cuts the hair of Daniel Morash this week at Carwile's Barbershop.
Morash is one of only a few men who still get the 1950s Flat-Top cut.
This old cash register is still being used
at Carwile's Barbershop. It was first
used by Wayne Carwile's father, Bill
Carwile, when he first started the
business decades ago.
This shows some of the antique hair tonics still on the shelves at Carwile's Barbershop on North Marion Street.
Wayne said Morash is one of a few
who still come to him for a flat-top,
which was popular back in the
1950s and 1960s.
“As a matter of fact,” he said, “last
week was only the second time in
53 years that I cut four flat-tops in a
row.”
Wayne still remembers his first paying
customer, Rudolph Allen, who
he said came back three or four
years ago to get his hair cut again.
He said the most famous person to
stop by his barbershop was Alabama
Gov. George Wallace, who
stopped by in the early 1960s for a
shave.
Wayne’s shop still has the original
cash register. He said you can see
one just like it when Floyd the barber
cuts hair on the Andy Griffin
Show television reruns. Also, many
of the first hair tonics used at the
barbershop, are there on display,
along with some of the famous flattop
grease.
When you visit Carwile’s, it brings
back a lot of memories of days gone
to prove to every guest in our office
that dentistry doesn’t have to be a
worked hard to ensure that same
service continues at Limestone
After opening his practice in
With the
of summer
well underway
the river water is
reaching the low
90’s. This summer
occurrence will
ush the bass into deep water.
ish will go as deep as possible to
scape the hot surface temperatures
and clear water. The most
important factor in determining
the depths in which big bass
school is oxygen concentration.
The bass will seek a comfort zone
to hold up that has baitfish and a
avorable therocline. Using side
cans or down scans found on
ome of the latest electronics help
nglers pin point the exact depth
t which to present their lure. The
ey is to fish the bait through the
epth the fish are holding in.
he participants of the Fishers of
en trail competed June 22,
012 on the 67,000 acres lake
e call Wheeler. This trail has a
ery competitive group of anglers.
he trail allows fishermen to fish a
hoice of different lakes. Wilson,
ickwick, Wheeler, and Guntersville.
Each lake takes on its
own identity and requires a different
fishing technique and lures to
be successful.
The tournament on Wheeler Lake
was the last tournament of the
2012 season and won by the
team of Marty Duncan of
Lawrenceburg, Tn. and local business
owner, Jerry Lawler, of
Athens. The team brought a bag of
bucketmouths that rocked the
scales at 19.26 pounds. The Duncan
& Lawler team also won the
Fishers of Men May tournament
that was held on Wheeler. These
boys have got the Wheeler fish figured
out. The second place team
of Lynch & Hogue were nipping at
the first place team with 18.80
pounds. Battles and Moody finished
third place with 18.05
pounds. These were some big
bags for late June.
Ernie and Ryan Darracott
This last tournament was sad for
many by the retiring of Carl Darracott,
tournament director. Darracott
and his family have been
running the trail for the past seven
years. I have made friends with
Carl and his family by covering the
tournaments for The Valley Star.
The participants of the tournament
respect each other and Carl
did a great job with the Friday
night meetings and running of the
tournaments. We will sure miss
you and may God bless you and
your family.
Soap box voice: Local bass tournaments
have chosen not to allow a
dead fish to be weighed. This rule
is bad for the fishermen and the
lake resource - the bass. This
practice will cause fishermen to
discharge their dead fish back into
the lake and never bring them to
Jerry Lawler and Marty Duncan have another First Place finish on Wheeler Lake.
Team Chambers and Crow with
some nice largemouth.
the scales. This is a waste of good
edible fish. There is always someone
at the weigh in looking for a
mess of fresh fish. I suggest let
dead fish be weighed and dock
the weight with an 8oz. penalty. If
groups are willing to schedule
tournaments in the hot summer
Thanks to Carl Darracott, Fishers of
months, please have a plan to
deal with the dead fish.

Habits of highly healthy kids - Part 2
In the last issue
of The Valley
Star we discussed
what it
means to be
healthy and how
Flo Doughty
raising the stanard
we have for our children will
elp them be “Highly Healthy”.
ighly healthy children are sucessful
and happy and that is what
e all desire for our children!
n Dr. Walt Larimore’s book, “The
ighly Healthy Child”, he sets forth
ten principles that deeply affect
the health of our children. Remember
we expanded “healthy” to
not just mean physical health, but
emotional, spiritual and relational
health as well. The ten principles
are:
•Be Proactive in Preventing Physical
Disease
•Build Your Child’s Health Care
Team
•Ensure Proper Nutrition
•Provide Adequate Protection –
(i.e. Monitor what they watch on
TV, friendships, etc.)
•Nurture Family Relationships
•Establish Spiritual Foundation
•Connect with the Larger Community
•Instill a Balanced Self-Concept
•Engage in Healthy Activities
•Cultivate Growth and Maturity
We won’t have time to discuss all
of these so we will make a list of
some habits and behaviors that
will help encourage us to take our
children to the next level of
healthy!
Highly healthy kids are not just fed
healthy food, but are taught the
reasons why a healthy diet is important.
Kids are far more likely to
accept and continue healthy diets
if they understand why it is important
and what the consequences
re if they don’t.
ighly healthy kids exercise, not
just occasionally, but regularly. Exercise
helps kids to burn anxious
energy, and exercise helps them
develop healthy hearts and
healthy self-esteem. Kids who exercise
and eat a healthy diet feel
better about themselves, sleep
better and have better attention
spans. This translates into better
academic performance as well.
Studies prove this.
Highly healthy kids don’t spend a
lot of time watching TV and playing
video games. Highly healthy kids
are interacting with parents, being
creative, reading books, playing
active games. They aren’t “watching”
life, they are living it!
In his book, “The Successful Child”
William Sears writes, “Many parents
devote a great deal of effort
to shaping their child’s intellectual,
emotional, or physical development,
but they shy away from
teaching spirituality. They are neglecting
a critical tool for success.
Prayer also makes belief more real
and shapes the identity of the family.”
So, highly healthy children
have a family who prays together
and how great it is when siblings
pray for each other!
Highly healthy kids are taught how
to build friendships and positive interactions
are shown by example
at home in how parents interact
with each other and those outside
the home.
This list could go on, but these are
a few things to get us started on
the path of raising highly healthy
children. I encourage you to pick
up a copy of Dr. Larimore’s book,
“The Highly Healthy Child”, you will
be encouraged and challenged in
ways that will not only help your
child, but your entire family unit!
If you would like help with the exercise
and nutrition parts of having
ardening: Work or pleasure
by Debra Johnson
know you’ve heard the saying,
“one man’s trash is another
man’s treasure.” Well, you might
could almost say the same about
gardening: “One man’s work is another
man’s pleasure.”
I enjoy working in the vegetable
garden, and others prefer flower
gardening.
I’ve been associated with gardening
ever since I was a child. My
grandparents lived on a farm, so
we would spend a lot of our summer
sitting under shade trees
shelling peas and shucking corn.
My family moved from town to a
farm when I was about 10 years
old, and the garden became a
family affair. Now, I still enjoy
planting vegetables, watching
them grow, and especially eating
them fresh out of the garden. I’ve
often been asked why I wanted to
fool with a garden since there is so
much work involved, but really
while working in the garden, you
are getting plenty of exercise and
sun, not to mention the pleasure
of seeing your garden produce delicious
vegetables. The work doesn’t
stop when the vegetables
arrive. Then you have the job of
gathering them and then canning
or freezing for food later on in the
winter. It is not uncommon to see
gardens in the country, but there
are also quite a few garden spots
in town. I guess there are a lot of
people that enjoy growing fresh
vegetables as I do. I hope there will
be young people that are interested
in vegetable gardening and
that it will continue with each new
generation and not become a lost
tradition.
YEARS AGO IN LIMESTONE COUNTY
YEARS AGO IN LIMESTONE COUNTY
by Rebekah Davis
Limestone County Archivist
Was Confederate Veterans photo made at reunion of 1889
Rebekah
Davis
One of the
best things
about my
job is you never
know what fascinating
piece of
the Limestone
County history
puzzle is going to walk through
the door that day.
On Monday, Archives patron
Lakin Boyd walked in with a copy
of the photo you see here, and
with a question.
He knew that the photo was
taken at a Confederate Veterans
reunion before the turn of the
century, but the question was,
“When” The Archives had a poor
quality reproduction of the same
photo, identified as the Confederate
Veterans reunion of 1880,
but Boyd said according to his
family members, the photo was
taken closer to 1888.
So I did a little digging and found
this article from The Alabama
Courier of Aug. 29, 1889:
THEY WORE THE GRAY
Veterans of the Lost Cause
Gather at Athens,
Immense Crowd, Plenty to Eat
and Speech-Making
Last Saturday was a good day for
all Limestone and especially the
Confederate soldiers of this
county-the occasion of their reunion,
and there were present, as
handed us by the officer of the
day, Capt. Geo. King, in line 336,
but this did not near the number
those present for there were
many stragglers.
Early in the morning, just as the
early streaks of the sun were beginning
to show themselves, wagons
filled with men, women and
children were seen coming into
town from every direction, and
lso hundreds came on horseack
and on foot, all bent on seeng
the many old “verterans” that
ould meet, many for the first
time since the days when they
last met on the field where the
“dead and dying lay.” It was a
sight not often seen, and many
tears ran down the cheeks of the
sturdy old soldier as he grasped
again the hand of the man that
had stood beside him in the
thickest of the fight, where shot
fell as hail from the enemies’
guns. They had many things to
talk of and each one wanted to
make the other the hero and the
bravest man of the war, which
they all succeeded in doing to the
satisfaction of each other.
Early in the morning, the splendid
brass band, from Cullman, Alabama,
which had been secured
for the occasion, was in the court
yard and sweet strains of music
greeted the old soldier as he
came in town and as soon as he
had hitched his horse or mule, he
would join the ranks over in the
county’s grassy yard of justice,
and such a greeting as one could
see if he were on the outlook,
and as each new arrival came
there would be words and handshaking.
As each old soldier
would register his name, the editor
of the Courier, who had
printed about five hundred beautiful
badges, bearing the following
“C.S.A.”, would pin on each of the
dear old soldiers showing where
he stood, and it was a pleasure to
see how happy it made them feel.
At half past ten o’clock, the order
to fall into line was given by Col.
Gaines C. Smith, as well as if it
had been yesterday, did they understand
what it meant, and they
formed a line, two deep reaching
across the court yard, and then at
the well-known tap of the drum,
they took up the line of march
and followed the band to the
beautiful college grove at the
Male College Grounds, where
they were addressed by Gen. Joe
Wheeler who many of them followed
through the thickest of the
fight, then following an address
by Maj. E. C. Gordon, and then
that great and grand man, Gen.
Wm. B. Bate, of Tennessee, one
of the grandest leaders of the
Southern Confederacy, made the
old soldiers a speech such as he
alone can make.
After his beautiful and able address,
the immense crowd present,
were invited to the long
tables that were weighted down
with the richest and best prepared
barbecue meats and all
the other things that were needful
to such an occasion, and bade
to help themselves, and to say
that one or any of the crowd went
away hungry would, we think, be
to tell an untruth. There were
about one hundred cues nicely
prepared, and sent up to the tables.
When such men as Charley
Tyrone, John Owen, Thomas J.
Carter, Dan Hare and Newt
Hodges were at the head of affairs,
all may know that it was
prepared fit for the gods to have
enjoyed. The pit where the meats
were cooked, on Friday night
about ten o’clock presented a
beautiful appearance and when
the scribe took them in, and
found the above named gentlemen
at the head of the cooking
department, we were satisfied it
was a success.
So my question to you is: Is this
the photo that was taken that
day I don’t know for certain, but
I’d love to. If you can answer that
question, call me at the Archives,
COOKING WITH MAMA KAYE
by Mama Kaye
Zucchini Fritters, mmm good
What to
cook with
all this
squash and zucchini
from the garden
Let’s try this
Mama Kaye recipe that is very
good.
You will need:
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup shredded yellow squash
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
1 cup shredded carrots
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil, or
1 cup corn muffin mix more as
needed
Toss zucchini, squash, and carrots
with salt in a colander and
drain for 15 minutes. Wrap vegetables
in a clean kitchen towel
Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
in a large skillet over medium heat,
tilting skillet to spread oil evenly.
Drop tablespoonfuls of the zucchini
batter into the hot oil, flattening
each dollop with the back of a
spoon. Pan-fry until golden brown,
(1 to 2 minutes per side). Transfer
fritters to a paper towel-lined plate
to drain. Add more oil as need to
fry remaining mixture. Cool slightly
before serving.
Have a Blessed Day!
Mama Kaye
and squeeze out as much moisture
as possible ( I just pick up a
handful of vegetable and give a
gentle squeeze); transfer mixture
to a bowl.
Combine corn muffin mix, baking
powder and paprika in a bowl. Stir
in vegetables and beaten eggs
until well mixed.
Cruisin’ with Joseph
Aperson can
get teased
about his or
her name for many
reasons, but a boy
with a girl’s name
Joseph Scott
would be hard to
overcome. This is the story of a
man born in Texas in 1923 that will
forever be famous and not because
of his first name; he would change
the automotive world as we know it.
his Ford backed GT40 race team
would beat all the European factory
race teams and win LeMans in
1966 and 67. The relationship with
Ford was only beginning, because
just a short time later a friend
named Lee Iacocca called him up
and asked if he would use his racing
skills and knowledge to help
him with a new car he was promoting
called “Mustang."
The Mustang GT350’s are some of
by Joseph Scott
A man called Carroll was influential
He was one of the most
influential figures in car
racing during the 1950’s…
He was one of the most influential
figures in car racing during the
1950’s and may have gone down
in the books as the most successful
race car driver of all time had it
not been for a heart condition that
forced him to hang up his helmet in
1960. He lived his life in the fast
lane, whether he was setting a new
land speed record at the Bonneville
Salt Flats or winning at the world
famous LeMans race course, there
was something special about this
man. Instead of hanging his head
in defeat due to his racing career
being sidelined, it only gave him
more time to focus on his new
thoughts of building race cars and
race teams. He also decided to
begin designing and building production
cars and his first major
project became known as the
“Cobra” and it set the world afire
with its small-lightweight frame and
big engines.
His race team would begin to win
everything in sight including the FIA
World Championship of GT cars in
1965. As he built on that success,
the most expensive muscle cars
being sold today. The partnership
with the Ford Mustang has
spanned some 48 years and still
carries his name today. He was
also involved in the development
and design of the Dodge Viper and
Charger of the 90’s. Then again he
would rekindle his involvement with
Ford in 2003 with the introduction
of the Ford GT. Bringing it full circle,
his name would appear again on
the Mustang in 2007 as the GT-
500 was reborn.
If I were to compile a dictionary,
next to the word “Speed” I would
put a footnote that said “see Carroll
Shelby”! Yes, this “man named
Carroll” is none other than Carroll
Shelby, the man whose name has
adorned so many of the cars we
love; Shelby Cobra, Shelby Mustang
GT350, Shelby Mustang GT500,
Dodge Shelby Charger, and even
the new 2013 Shelby GT500 Mustang
ALLISON’S ATTIC
by Allison Banta
Not so traditional door wreaths
Ilove holidays, and
I love decorating
for them. That
being said, I’m generally
not on top of
my game in that
Allison Banta area. Holidays always
sneak up on
me. My front door is my favorite
place to change things up, so I’m
usually left debating the merits of
creating a whole new wreath just 8
days before the actual holiday. If I’m
only going to be able to leave it
hanging up for a week – why even
bother In my true procrastinator
fashion, I just realized that the 4th of
July is next week and I am, as usual,
completely unprepared in the front
door décor department. A new
wreath actually won out over laziness
this time, mostly because I realized
that I can also justify putting it
out during the Olympics and at Labor
Day too – and I’m all for anything
that’s multipurpose.
This project isn’t a traditional
wreath, and there are two reasons
for that.
1. Traditional gets a little boring after
a while.
2. I had new washi tape that was
begging to be used.
If you want to try it you’ll need: a 5x7
white picture frame, red and blue
washi tape – one roll of each (available
at most craft stores and Target),
wide blue ribbon, 1 yard of red
burlap, and a giant embroidery
hoop.
Start by ironing your burlap. Place
the burlap inside the embroidery
hoop, tighten the hoop until burlap is
taut and smooth, and then trim excess
burlap. Next, remove the glass
and backing from your picture
frame. Using your washi tape, create
an American flag on the backing.
You just want to make a rough flag
shape – if you’re a perfectionist this
might not be a great project for you.
Discard the glass and put your “flag”
back into the frame. Staple or tape
your blue ribbon to the back of the
picture frame, and then run the ribbon
through the top of the hoop. I
added some wooden stars to mine,
but you could also add more ribbons
or a bow if you wanted a little extra
interest.
One disclaimer: please don’t blame
me if you end up humming “My
Country ‘Tis Of Thee”, “America The
Beautiful”, or “The Star Spangled
Banner” for three days straight. Or
maybe that’s just me…
Smoking Railroad Street BBQ Cookoff
By: Danny Johnson
he boys and girls who enjoy
cooking and eating succulent,
smoked meat converged on
Elkmont, last weekend for bragging
rights.
Larry Pylant, event director, again
had good participation and a good
time for teams competing in the
cook-off and plenty of good food
available for on-lookers. Teams as
far away as Nashville, Tenn. and
Scottsboro, were contestants in the
cooking event. Backyard competitions
have become a popular event
around this area.
Savory smells of ribs and chicken
filled the air as I made my way to the
cook site across from the Red Caboose.
The first team I made contact
with was Team Bertha, who
invited my wife, Debra, and I to try
some of their tasty food. I never turn
down an opportunity to a feed. After
a half-dozen ribs and a few tasty
wings we made our way throughout
the cooking area.
Proceeds from this cooking contest
go to help fund projects sponsored
by the Elkmont Lions Club. The
weather was a little hot, but there
were plenty of shade trees and cold
drinks to keep everybody pretty cool.
If you have a need to feed on tasty
smoked vittles, I suggest you take a
trip to Elkmont next year and visit
the cook-off event.
UNCLE BONDEE’S ADVENTURES
by Uncle Bondee
ruck Patch farming pays off
With summer
underway
the garden crops
were coming in.
The tomatoes
Uncle Bondee
were always ready
by the 4 th of July.
alton had planted a big field of
atermelons this year and they
ere getting ripe and ready to sell.
umpy said, “ Let’s peddle some
f the garden vegetables out of
the back of our pickup truck.” We
always were trying to come up
with ways to make a little spending
money. There was a problem.
We didn’t have a pickup truck.
Humpy said he would borrow his
Uncle Melvin’s 1950 Chevrolet
truck. A load of fresh produce
would sell quickly if we brought it
to Athens. The gang loaded the
truck early Saturday morning, and
we made our way to the square in
Athens. The truck was loaded with
tomatoes, corn, squash, and big
ipe watermelons. The town was
usy with people and we parked
the truck in front of the 5 & dime
store. This was one of the favorite
spots for people to visit and shop.
The kids liked the 5 and dime
store because of all of the different
kinds of candy they sold. The
first customer we had walked up
and said, “That’s some mighty
fine looking stuff yawl have there.
Where did yawl grow that stuff at
I answered, “Gourdsville on Shoal
Creek.” He replied, “That is some
of the best soil in the county.”
That black land will raise anything.
The gentleman said, “Give me a
half dozen of them tomatoes and
a couple of watermelons.” The
people started buying the vegetables
as fast as we could wait on
them. There was one man named
Chuck that tried to jew us down on
our prices. He must have been
short on money, and we gave him
a little discount. By noon the truck
was empty, and we had a pocket
full of money. I said, “Let’s go by
the Creme Delight on our way
home and get some ice cream.”
The square was a place everybody
came to on Saturday. There were
water fountains on every corner. I
guess shopping made people really
thirsty.
On our way back to the Gaston
Holler we stopped at Cross Key
and put some gas in Uncle
Melvin’s truck.
Gas was only 25 cents a gallon
back then. After eating a lunch of
souse meat and hoop cheese we
made our way home before dark.
After giving Uncle Melvin a cut of
our sale, he told us we could use
the truck any time we wanted to.
We made several trips to Athens
that summer and sold vegetables
until they ran out. Big city folks
were always wanting to buy things
we grew and made on the farm.
After the produce was gone we
sold several cans of molasses.
The money we made went a long
way in buying shoes and clothes
for starting back to school. Humpy
said, “If you are willing to sweat a
little, there is money to be made.”
That fall on Saturdays we sold
turnip greens. During the winter
months sugar cured hams and
oak firewood sold great. I guess
one might say a country boy could
survive.
Tony Kirk is new Athens Fire Chief
candidates for the position.
Council members Jimmy Gill,
Harold Wales, and Jim Hickman
voted to name Kirk chief. Council
members Milly Caudle and Mignon
Bowers abstained.
Wales said, “We had two people inhouse
who were very good candidates.
We can’t pick but one. I
think Tony, with the 25 years he already
has in service, will make an
excellent fire chief.”
Hickman said it was a tough decision,
but added, “I believe Tony will
be an excellent choice.”
Council President Jimmy Gill said
although the choice wasn’t unanimous,
the council will work with
Kirk and move forward.
Kirk has said that as chief he
would want to address industrial
and residential growth by adding a
Another goal he has is a training
facility for the staff. Kirk starts his
July. He also serves as a volunteer
firefighter with the East Limestone
he was treasurer for 15 years.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE
by Chuck Vessels
Feral/wild hog hunting advice
With the
growing
number
of feral and wild
hogs in our area
Chuck Vessels
there is a growing
need for undertanding
control and eradication
techniques. I have spent a considerable
amount of time over the
last six months researching, testing,
and studying options that
cover the gamut of trapping, baiting,
shooting, and scaring the
hogs. There are several legitimate
companies available to aide
landowners in eradication and
control services that are based
on science and success. I have
found hundreds of questionable
services that basically just want
access to your land to hunt indiscriminately
with no real intent on
long-term problem solving.
I am satisfied that real long-term
solutions are based on trapping
not just hunting/shooting that
systematically removes an entire
sounder (sows, choates, and pigs
in a related family unit) at a time.
This prevents the hogs that didn’t
get trapped from “learning” the
trap and training others to avoid
it. Yes, hogs are extremely intelligent
and evidence has shown
they will learn a trap and keep
others away. In addition to trapping,
shooting the hogs also
aides in eradication and scaring
the hogs off your land.
This brings us to the focus of the
article, which is a lesson and advice
for shooting hogs. I grew up
on a dairy farm that also raised a
few hogs. I remember the ferocity,
toughness, speed, and attitude
of the domestic hogs as
being more than I liked dealing
with as a boy. On more than one
occasion a sow put me in a tree
or quickly over a fence. I was always
scared of them. I have
grown now to appreciate the
feral/wild hogs as being much
worse on all traits. I have been
shocked at how tough these hogs
are. Not to mention spooky, fast,
and extremely violent if wounded
and cornered.
I have hunted hogs with bow,
knives, rifles, and even
bay/catch/tie alive with dogs. I
am happy to report I survived and
have settled on rifles. I have either
used or seen used every possible
caliber of handgun, rifle,
and shotgun imaginable and
have decided on a semi-auto rifle
in calibers from .223 (5.56mm)
to .308 (7.62mm) with my preference
being .308. In all cases two
things are critical, bullet type and
shot placement. I have shot several
hogs through the heart and
lungs (practiced from deer hunting)
and had them run 50 yards
or more into the thick brush or
swamps with little to no blood
trail. Match and ball type ammo
drills small holes that seal with
fat and do very little immediate
incapacitating damage. I recommend
you use quality hollowpoint
or ballistic-tip ammunition
to create lots of central nervous
system and hydrostatic damage
as well as leave large entrance
and possibly exit wounds for
blood trails.
Even better is shot placement to
anchor them in their tracks. If
you draw a line between the
crown of the shoulder and their
ear hole and shoot at the middle
of that line you will get the spine
and drop them instantly. This
shot placement saves a lot of
nervous tracking and walking in
thick brush hoping that you find
Daryl Sammet
Owner
ALL TREE
the hog dead instead of waiting in
ambush. I have been involved in
several hog slaughters where the
proper (precise) placement of a
.22 in the head killed the hog instantly.
Please read “precise”
placement. If you miss the
“sweet spot” you will have an
even more dangerous hog to deal
with. So, if you have to track one,
take a buddy and be very careful!
Landowners have gotten used to
dealing with coyote and even bobcat
problems for generations. We
have learned that they are spooky
and generally just a fleeting opportunity
at best. Modern calling
and hunting techniques have provided
some success. But, coyotes
and bob-cats run away.
Hogs are much more destructive
and aggressive. They don’t mind
hunting you back, and can be
very dangerous to domestic animals
and children. If you suffer
from hog problems, do your research,
talk to others, and work a
proper strategy for success.
Groundwork,
or
as I refer
to it, GroundPlay,
is a very important
part of
Jim Swanner
being with
horses and handling horses.
Many years I was taught to do
your groundwork. An old saying
I have heard and used with
many of my students, ‘The Better
Your Groundwork, the Less
You Hit the Ground’. This is a
ery true statement. (I will say
this now; Groundwork is NOT
chasing a horse in mindless
circles, lunging).
Groundplay is the most important
part of your horsemanship.
It builds your confidence
and it also builds your horses
HORSE SENSE
Groundwork
confidence in you. It builds
trust and respect from both
sides. It’s a great way to build
the bond and relationship between
you and your horse. But,
you must do it right. You have
to know what you’re doing before
you begin. What a great
number of horse people don’t
understand, from the ground is
a great place to watch your
horse learn. It’s a great place
to watch them begin to think
and understand. You can
watch his body and how he responds
with his thinking. It is
an awesome thing to see a
horse begin to think and understand
us and more importantly,
us the horse.
Learn what to do before you go
and do anything. Don’t assume
The Crist Family
will be singing
Sunday night,
July 1
6:00 p.m.
anything with your horse. Get
some schooling for you before
you try to teach your horse the
wrong things. It’s like studying
before you get behind the
steering wheel of a vehicle to
take your driving test. You have
to know a little something.
On the other hand, groundwork
can be overdone. Sometimes
what we are trying to do takes
only a few seconds or minutes
or it could take a couple of
hours. You have to know when
to stop. If your horse tries in a
positive manner, don’t continue
to ask. Also, once your
horse gets it, don’t ask for it
again, especially during the
present teaching session.
Some owners still drill their
horses too much when it isn’t
necessary and is the wrong
thing to do. The horse is trying
to do what we want and when
he does it we keep asking for it
again the horse begins to think
he did the wrong thing and we
have to spend unnecessary
time getting back to the place
we were a couple hours ago
where if we had stopped, it
would have been a building
by Jim Swanner
block for the next day. But OH
NO, we have to have it one
more time. Stop doing when
the horse tries in a positive
manner.
If you find your horse is not responding
in a positive manner,
if he is not trusting, respectful
and a pleasure to be with, you
may be the cause for the behavior.
Check yourself for your
attitude, knowledge and ego.
Remove yourself and begin to
do what the horse needs, not
us. It took me a bit of time to
understand what this meant.
Once I did understand, everything
began to change for the
horse and me.
Learn for your horses’ sake
and your safety. Learn to enjoy
being with your horse. Become
part of the herd. It will change
your life.
ROB’SPACE by Rob Phraner
phrantrain@gmail.com
Live like you were dyin’
I’ll never forget
watching Tug Mc-
Graw hold high the
Philadelphia Enquirer
newspaper as he
rode in the victory parade.
It said “You
Rob Phraner
Gotta Believe!” a phrase McGraw coined
that seemed to push the Phillies to victory
over the Kansas City Royals in the
1980 World Series. The parade slowly
rode through the chilly streets of Philly
with McGraw as the centerpiece next to
Mike Schmidt. He was a tremendous relief
pitcher and team comedian, cheerleader
and competitor.
McGraw became a baseball announcer
after his playing career was over. Everything
was going well for him until he had
a sudden change in health. He began to
have severe headaches in 2003 and by
the time the brain tumor was discovered,
Tug, all of 59 years old, was told by doctors
he had three weeks to live. Three
weeks.
He lived nine months, pouring his time
into his family, into a legacy dedicated to
curing brain cancer, and even to reconciling
a hidden part of his past he had
buried safely away for years. McGraw
had a wife and kids, but he also had another
son from a previous relationship
when he was very young, a son he ignored
all of his life.
The boys’ mother was Elizabeth
D’Agostino. She didn't tell her son about
his famous father, in part because she
wanted to move past that particular part
of her life, too. But young Timmy found
his birth certificate, and made the most
shocking discovery of his life. Timmy’s
favorite baseball player, the World Series
hero Tug McGraw, was also his father!
Tim changed his name from Tim Trimble
to Tim McGraw.
Tim found Tug when
he was an older teenager,
but there was nothing there. Tim
had his own dreams and didn’t have
time to dwell in the past. There were no
warm feelings, no immediate connection,
and no real future. After that first meeting,
they drifted apart. But once more, as
an adult, Tim reached out to Tug again.
And the second time, the attraction took.
A bond formed. Father and son, as
strange as it must have seemed to them,
became close.
And then when news came that time
was running out, they became closer
still. In the end, Tug McGraw even died
at Tim McGraw's Nashville home.
In 2004 Tim's song, "Live Like You Were
Dying," stayed on top of the charts for
10 weeks, breaking a record that had
stood for 30 years, and was named the
top country song of the year by Billboard
magazine. It was the story of a man who
got the news that he was dying - a man
made a decision of how he would live
with the time he had left. Some of the
lyrics read:
He said "I was finally the husband,
that most the time I wasn’t.
An' I became a friend
a friend would like to have.
And all of a sudden goin' fishin’,
wasn’t such an imposition,
and I went three times
that year I lost my Dad.
Well, I finally read the Good Book,
and I took a good long hard look,
at what I'd do if I could
do it all again,”
and then:
"I went sky diving,
I went rocky mountain climbing,
I went two point seven seconds
on a bull named Fu Man Chu.
And I loved deeper
and I spoke sweeter,
and I gave forgiveness
I'd been denying."
An' he said: "Some day,
I hope you get the chance,
to live like you were dyin'."
At the end of the day, at the end of a life,
relationships are the most important
thing a man has. Especially with his
kids, and particularly a father with his
sons. We should live like we are dyin’.
Every Father’s Day, I remember January
10, 2009. It was a Saturday night and
the Pittsburg Steelers were playing in an
AFC playoff game. I was sitting there
and the thought came to me to call my
dad. I almost didn’t; the kids were running
around and I was distracted, and
getting a little tired. But I called and we
had a good talk, probably over twenty
minutes. He mentioned an article he
read in the sports section of the paper
and said he would send it to me. We
hung up, and I didn’t realize that would
be the last time I would ever talk to him.
The next morning, as I was getting ready
for church, my dad went outside and
was shoveling a fresh layer of snow from
his sidewalk in the Pocono, Pennsylvania
mountains. At age 70, without warning,
he died instantly of a massive heart
attack, right by his front door.
I miss him. I also miss the grandfather I
barely got to know. He died in the house
I grew up in, suddenly and tragically,
when I was a little boy. We never know
our time. But for those reading this,
your time has not yet come. You can tell
your kids you love them, read them a
story from the Bible to them, go out to
lunch with them, or a movie, or possibly,
reconcile with them, like Tim and Tug
McGraw. Live like you were dyin’.

Realistic and livable tips for a healthy lifestyle
According to the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), in the past 20
years, the diets of most Americans
have changed, consuming too
many calories and too few nutrients.
This type of diet leads to
weight gain – 60 percent of Americans
are overweight or obese –
and 9 out of 10 Americans fall
short of many essential nutrients
in their diets. With on-the-go
lifestyles, many people find it difficult
to eat right, exercise regularly
and keep their diet in check.
Dr. Melina Jampolis, author of
“The Calendar Diet: A Month by
Month Guide to Losing Weight
While Living Your Life,” knows that
even small, consistent steps can
lead to big changes over time.
“Eating a well balanced diet, keeping
to a fitness routine and maintaining
one’s weight are all tactics
to support a healthy lifestyle. As a
octor specializing in nutrition and
eight loss, I’ve been helping peole
navigate life’s challenges using
motivational and simple, yearong
approach.” The “Calendar
iet,” shows you how to maintain a
ealthy lifestyle month-by-month,
llowing you to cut calories without
epriving yourself.
Dr. Melina shares the following
recommendations:
Eat wholesome foods
“A menu filled with seasonal fruits
and vegetables will give you a big
nutritional boost,” suggests Dr.
Melina. Vegetables, she explains,
are packed with fiber and water,
and are low in fat, so they decrease
the calorie density of your
diet, while boosting overall nutrition.
Opt for lean protein in your diet as
well, which helps control hunger,
stabilize blood sugar levels, support
your metabolism, as well as
build and protect muscle. Add
moderate amounts of “good” fats
– found in nuts, seeds, avocados
and olive oil – to keep calories
under control and support the absorption
of fat soluble vitamins like
A, D, E and K.
Supplement your diet
“When you reduce calories, you reduce
nutrient intake. I recommend
dietary supplements to my patients
who are restricting calories
and who want to achieve optimal
health,” says Dr. Melina. “When
choosing supplements, it is important
to go with a reputable brand
such as Nature Made,” says Dr.
Melina, “which has rigorous quality
control standards in place to ensure
what is on the label is in the
bottle.” Dr. Melina also recommends
looking for products carrying
the United States Pharmacopeia
(USP) Verified Dietary
Supplement mark, as a way to ensure
the product has met stringent
quality criteria for purity and potency.
Nature Made was the first
company to obtain the USP Verified
Dietary Supplement mark for
many of its products.
For most of her patients, especially
those who are overweight or
obese, live in northern latitudes, or
are at an age greater than 65, Dr.
Melina recommends taking a vitamin
D supplement as this key nutrient
plays a supporting role in
bone, heart and immune health.
“To determine if you have low vitamin
D levels, speak with your doctor
about having your blood levels
of vitamin D checked,” says Dr.
Melina, who recommends adults
take 1000 to 2000 International
Units (IU) of Vitamin D3 daily to fulfill
their vitamin D requirement.
Up your activity
Always speak with your doctor before
beginning a new workout regimen.
Make sure you get the
recommended amount of activity
into your week. “The key is to gradually
increase your activity levels,”
says Dr. Melina. “By switching up
your routine every month, you can
continually challenge yourself, improve
fitness levels and work
major muscle groups in different
ways to prevent plateaus.”
