Whether you’re charging a large set of house batteries in a cruising 

yacht or keeping your stereo batteries charged for an afternoon on 

the lake in your wakeboard boat, one thing remains a constant — 

your charging system has to be up to the task. 

The fact is, most OEM charging systems are designed specifically 

to meet the limited needs of an engine starting battery and associated 

electrical loads. In “real life” boating conditions, the demands of 

house battery loads, AC inverters, stereo amps, lighting, refrigeration, 

and heating and cooling can quickly overwhelm the limited capacity 

of the factory-installed alternator; and the result can be a dead set of 

batteries and a ruined day of boating.

the right alternator and voltage regulator can be confusing for 

the average boater.

Mounting Styles 

Alternator Installation Basics 

The first issue, alternator mounting style, usually falls into one of four possibilities: (A) single 

1”-foot (Motorola-Style) mount, (B) single 2”-foot (Delco-Style) mount, (C) 3.15” ID saddle 

(Hitachi-style) mount, and (D) 4”ID saddle (J-180 style) mount. The vast majority of marine 

gasoline and diesel engines will use one of these four mounting styles. The list below provides 

a guide for many engine applications, yet we strongly recommend you compare your existing 

alternator to the alternators at right to ensure a proper match. In some cases, additional 

spacing or modification to mounting components may be necessary to ensure proper fit or 

alignment. A full list of alternator dimensions is provided on Page 19 of the Product Guide. 

While Balmar makes every effort to provide an OEM-compatible product, “drop in” alternator 

replacement is not guaranteed.

Bracket Mount 

As indicated in the chart, alternator mounting styles may vary among engine manufacturer’s 

models and by model year. The best way to ensure that you are ordering the proper replacement 

for your alternator is to verify your engine’s specific mounting configuration and alternator 

dimensions prior to purchasing your Balmar replacement alternator. 

Belt Size 

Drive belt width is another critical factor when selecting a replacement alternator. Vee belts and 

multi-groove serpentine belts have specific limits in relation to alternator size. When installing 

an alternator upgrade, it is essential that the alternator selected is limited to the capacity of its 

drive belt. Failure to do so will result in premature belt wear, belt slippage, and potential damage 

to the alternator and engine. The following chart provides a general guideline for alternator 

selection, based on belt type and width. Note that dual vee belts and serpentine belts support 

substantially larger loads:

Alternator To Battery Ratio 

Other considerations when upgrading your charging system, are the electrical load requirements 

of your vessel, and the capacity of the batteries required to support those loads. Under 

most conditions, the capacity of the house batteries should equal triple the vessel’s daily 

electrical requirements. In cruising vessels, where shorepower charging opportunities may be 

few and far between, many experts recommend doubling that amount of battery capacity. 

To determine your vessel’s battery requirements, it’s necessary to determine the draw and 

duration of your vessel’s electrical equipment, including navigation, communications, lighting, 

inverter and heating/air conditioning loads. The chart at right provides a basic overview 

of typical DC marine electrical loads. Refer to equipment manuals for actual load ratings, or 

consult with a qualified marine electrician to determine your actual needs.

calculated. The general rule-of-thumb for alternator output 

to battery size ratio is 4:1. In other words, if your anticipated

MC-614/MC-624 Multi-Stage Voltage Regulators 

Max Charge 12-volt and 24-volt multi-stage voltage regulators provide the ultimate in charging safety and 

control. Selectable preset programs for standard and deep-cycle flooded, gel, AGM, spiral wound (Optima) 

batteries, as well as systems requiring voltage sensitivity for halogen fixtures. Can be used to control 

dual alternators on a single engine, or on twin engines when used with the Centerfielder (see Page 13). 

Regulators include: Stator/tach outputs, dash lamp and Aux. lamp terminals, Belt Load Management 

mode, small engine mode, programming tool, dual battery temperature sensor terminals, alternator temperature

make the ARS-5 the easiest multi-stage regulator to install

Dependable engine starting requires 

a dependable charge source for your 

starting battery. The Digital Duo Charge 

automatically tops off your starting battery 

whenever your house battery is 

being charged – even if batteries are 

different technologies. 

During charging, the Duo Charge monitors 

the house battery. When voltage 

exceeds the set minimum (typically 

13 volts in a 12-volt system), the Duo 

Charge automatically engages, providing 

up to 30 amps to the starting 

battery. 

When no charge source is present, 

the Duo Charge separates the batteries, 

so the starting battery won’t suffer 

from unintentional discharge.

Centerfielder II - CF-2-12/24 

Twin engine applications pose specific 

charging challenges and opportunities. 

Balmar’s unique Centerfielder II makes 

it possible to control the combined output 

of both engine alternators to charge a 

single batttery bank in a balanced manner 

without allowing port and starboard voltage 

regulators to confuse each other. The 

result is optimal charging throughout the 

charge cycle. 

Centerfielder II 

The Centerfielder II monitors port and starboard voltage regulators. When both alternators and 

voltage regulators are working, the Centerfielder II enables the master regulator to control both 

alternators, making it possible to charge a single house battery bank with the combined output 

from both alternators. 

The Centerfielder II works in both 12-volt and 24-volt applications, and includes detailed wiring instructions 

along with larger gauge wire replacements for port and starboard regulator power wires. 

Not required for use on single-engine, dual-alternator applications. Use only with Max Charge MC- 

614 or MC-624 voltage regulators. Do not install in systems utilizing internally regulated alternators

for a period of one year from the date of purchase. If any such defect is discovered within the warranty period, 

BALMAR will repair or replace the product free of charge, subject to verification of the defect or malfunction of 

the product by BALMAR Customer Service. BALMAR is not responsible for costs incurred for shipping to or from its 

headquarters. This warranty DOES NOT apply to defects or physical damage resulting from abuse, neglect, accident, 

mis-application, unauthorized or improper installation or repair, alteration, modification, or unreasonable use of the 

products. Cracked or broken cases, or parts damaged by fire, water, freezing, collision, theft, explosion, rust, corrosion 

or items damaged in shipment in route to BALMAR for repair are not warrantable conditions. BALMAR assumes no responsibility

MC-614 Smart Voltage Regulator 

The newest version of the premium Max Charge regulator 

family, the MC-614 features the fastest and most featurefilled 

processor yet. New, more user-friendly programming 

functions include a simplified Belt Load Management system 

that’s accessed in the basic programming mode. This is the 

regulator of choice for use in twin engine applications with the 

newly updated Centerfielder II. 

94LY Series Alternators 

Designed to delivered a large jump in charging output for Yanmar’s 

6LY3-Series engines, the 94LY alternator combines the proven 

robustness of the 94-Series large case alternator with the 3.15” ID 

saddle-style mounting common to many Yanmar engines. The 94LY- 

Series alternators are available in 165-amp and 210-amp ratings for 

12-volt systems, and a 140-amp model for 24-volt systems. 

Centerfielder II 

Upgraded for easier installation and more efficient operation, the 

Centerfielder II makes it possible for an installation without the 

need for wire taps or splices. Port and starboard LED indicators 

provide easy confirmation when port and starboard charging 

systems are providing balanced output. Includes required 

terminal connectors and upgraded wiring and fusing to handle 

increased field output. 

MC-612-DUAL Smart Voltage Regulator 

Designed specifically for applications where two alternators are 

used on a single engine to provide combined output to charge 

a large house battery bank, the new MC-612-DUAL provides 

the ability to direct field current to two alternators at once, without 

the need for wire splices and other modifications. The MC- 

612-DUAL features seven selectable preset battery programs, 

a wealth of advanced programming features and the ability two 

temperature sense at two alternators or two battery banks. 

Universal Lamp Relay (ULR) 

This inexpensive relay system that makes it possible to 

utilize the alternator’s stator (tachometer) output to control 

a relay that can open or close a circuit whenever the 

alternator is providing charging output. In addition to providing 

a method to control dash lamp output, the ULR 

can also be used to provide a circuit that automatically 

activates when the alternator is producing output. One 

year limited warranty.
