Swiss film productions move the audience. Christoph Schaub’s comedy “Giulias Verschwinden”,
which celebrated its premiere on the Piazza Grande in Locarno in 2009 and won the Audience
Prize, has already caught the eye of more than 180’000 viewers in Switzerland. The film went on to
enthuse a quarter of a million viewers in Germany and Austria as well. Swiss documentary films are
widely appreciated on a national and international level. Not only do they attract large audiences in
cinemas, for example “Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten”, but also enjoy tremendous success at festivals,
for instance “Aisheen (Still Alive In Gaza)”. Moreover, Michael Steiner’s filming of the alpine legend
“Sennentuntschi” has filled many a film aficionado with great expectations.
facts & figures
Swiss cinemas reported 6.51% more viewers in
2009. The strong increase in figures was seen
particularly in key cities, whereby this upswing was
primarily related to the fact that digital 3D cinema
established itself worldwide in 2009 and garnered
sales of over one million. Some 52 cinemas were
furnished with the technical infrastructure required
for 3D films at the end of 2009. The digital upgrade,
however, constitutes a major challenge for arthouse
cinemas outside urban centers due to financial
constraints. The US reinforced its traditional
role as leader: 126 of the 480 new films shown on
Swiss screens and a market share of 66.75%. And
although the 220 European film productions lost
ground with 27.64%, they maintained a high level.
With the sale of 551’003 tickets, the market share of
Swiss film productions lies below the mark for the
years 2005-2007, when it ranged between 5% and
10%. However, in 2008 it rose from 3.11% to 3.51%.
BOX OFFICE
GENERAL DATA ON SWISS CINEMAS
6.51% mehr Zuschauer in den Schweizer Kinos,
lautet die Bilanz des Kinojahres 2009. Besonders
With the sale of 146’000 tickets, “Giulias
Verschwinden” was the year’s most successful
Swiss fiction film. Moreover, with a box-office ranking
of 26 in 2009, it proved to be a long-distance
runner. By the end of June 2010 it had already
recorded ticket sales of over 180’000. Three films
targeting a wider audience – “Champions”, “Der
grosse Kater” and “Marcello, Marcello” – were
seen by 40’000 to 50’000 viewers. The two fiction
films “Cœur animal” and “Complices” were both
honoured with the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2010»
and each recorded commendable success with
some 10’000 admissions. Furthermore, the production
volume increased considerably: 29 fiction
films compared with 20 in the previous year. This
increase was also reflected in festival presence and
distribution to cinemas abroad.
A Swiss documentary film was honoured for the
first time with the European Film Award – Prix
ARTE for Best European Documentary Film 2009:
“The Sound Of Insects”. This prestigious award
for director Peter Liechti, together with the World
Cinema Directing Award for Christian Frei’s “Space
Tourists” in Sundance, have put Swiss documentary
filmmaking as a whole in the spotlight. Vadim
which won the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2010»,
has enjoyed success at home and abroad, with
sales already over 27’000 tickets. Once again,
Switzerland has lived up to its excellent international
reputation in this genre. Twenty-eight Swiss
documentary films were produced in 2009. Eleven
of these were debut films, bearing witness to
continuity and renewal. The decline in attendance
figures in 2009 – with the sale of 135’000
tickets for documentary film productions instead
of 230’000 in the previous year – was followed by
an exceptionally strong start in 2010: seven films
have already booked sales of over 10’000 tickets.
Pour la première fois, un documentaire suisse
obtient le Prix du Cinéma Européen: le Prix ARTE
du meilleur documentaire européen va au film «The
Sound Of Insects».
eux onze premiers films.
geht an «The Sound Of Insects». Diese hohe
Auszeichnung für Regisseur Peter Liechti und
der World Cinema Directing Award für Christian
Schweizer Dokumentarfilmschaffen als Ganzes ins
Rampenlicht.
28 Schweizer
Dokumentarfilme waren 2009 am Start, darunter
sind elf Erstlingsfilme. Das zeugt von Kontinuität und
Erneuerung. Auf die rückläufigen Kino-Resultate im
Jahr 2009 – 135’000 Eintritte für Dokumentarfilme
statt 230’000 im Vorjahr – folgt ein ausserordentlich
filmmaking. Forty short film productions from
Switzerland – 14 of which were animation films –
were honoured with awards in 2009. This represented
over half (56%) of all awards presented to Swiss
film productions and amounted to monetary awards
totalling CHF 261’000. The Swiss short film scene
has become increasingly transnational: coproductions
primarily with European countries were created,
for example, when Swiss directors completed
their studies at film schools abroad and produced
their graduation films in and with Switzerland. They
benefited thereafter from such a network with subsequent
works. Illustrating this trend are the multiaward-winning
short film productions “Polar”, “Ich
bin’s Helmut” and “Miramare”. The short film genre
has enjoyed an ever-larger audience in Switzerland,
also as a result of the Short Film Night Tour organised
by SWISS FILMS. Furthermore, the promotion
agency tested new projection formats for distribution,
enabling digital versions of short films to be
supplied directly to 98% of Swiss cinemas.
“Animatou” by Claude Luyet et al.
“Ich bin’s Helmut” by Nicolas Steiner
Schweiz – darunter 14 Animationsfilme – gewinnen
Trend. In der Schweiz finden die Kurzfilme eine
wachsende Zuschauerzahl, wozu die von SWISS
Promotionsagentur testet für ihren Verleih digitale
swiss film prize
SWISS FILMS plays a constant and central role in
the organisation of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz»
Since 1998 the distinction honours high-quality
films and outstanding achievements by actors and
places Swiss filmmaking in the limelight. The 13 th
festive award ceremony of the Swiss Film Prize
«Quartz» is held at the KKL Luzern and is under
the auspices of SRG SSR idée suisse, in collaboration
with the Federal Office of Culture and
SWISS FILMS. The television channels and radio
stations of the SRG SSR idée suisse devote their programmes
to Swiss filmmaking and feature reports
on the award ceremony. Next to the KKL Luzern
further partners are the Solothurn Film Festival,
the City of Lucerne and the Swiss Film Academy.
For the «Quartz 2010» members of the Swiss Film
Academy, which was founded in 2008, vote for the
first time on both the nominations and prizes. A jury,
comprised of academy members appointed by the
Federal Office of Culture, selects the prize winners
based on the nominations submitted by the Academy.
In addition, the jury awards the “Special Jury Prize”.
An Honorary Award is presented to film director
Claude Goretta. The monetary prizes presented to
the nominees amount to a total of CHF 375’000.
Winners of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz 2010» on March 6 at the KKL Luzern
Since the Locarno International Film Festival, where
numerous Swiss film productions enjoyed a strong
presence, participation at major A-category festivals
continued unwaveringly in 2009: “Cœur animal” by
Sévérine Cornamusaz in Montreal, “Pepperminta”
by Pipilotti Rist and “Hugo en Afrique” by Stefano
Knuchel in Venice and “Space Tourists” in
Amsterdam and Sundance. Switzerland celebrated
comebacks at the Berlinale 2010 with Silvio Soldini’s
“Cosa voglio di più” and with the two documentary
films “Aisheen (Still Alive In Gaza)” and “Daniel
Schmid - Le chat qui pense”. And also in Cannes
with Jean-Luc Godard’s “Film Socialisme”, Jean-
Stéphane Bron’s “Cleveland Versus Wall Street” and
the short animation film “Miramare”. SWISS FILMS
supported the presence of these and many other
films at international festivals in 2009 with active
mediation, as well as with financial contributions for
festival participation and the production of subtitled
prints amounting to a total of CHF 393,000. The
investment was worth it, for in 2009 alone, monetary
awards amounting to more than CHF 467,000
were presented to Swiss filmmakers.
obtient le World Cinema Directing Award. Comeback
Jean-Luc Godard, «Cleveland contre Wall Street»
film sales abroad
The international distribution of Swiss film productions
continued to expand its scope: whereas only
a few films were screened in cinemas abroad in
previous years, 17 fiction films and 13 documentary
films had a distributor in at least one country
outside Switzerland since the middle of 2009. In
addition, rights were sold to television stations and
DVD distribution companies. The greatest interest
was found in neighbouring countries such as
Germany, France and Austria, as well as in such
territories as Benelux or Quebec, which share one
of Switzerland’s national languages. With support
for the foreign distribution of films, which SWISS
FILMS manages under the auspices of the Federal
Office of Culture, cinema releases of Swiss film
productions could be supported with up to EUR
25’000. The export subsidies are allotted to foreign
distributors for promotion. As of the middle of 2009,
SWISS FILMS and the Federal Office of Culture supported
the cinematic release of four fiction films
and six documentary films in 15 countries with
contributions amounting to a total of EUR 307’800.
There was a decline in the number of sales for short
film productions compared with the previous year.
Twelve short film productions had foreign distribution
channels, mainly among television stations.
14
Fernsehstationen.
FILM FESTIVALS FACING DIGITAL FUROR
Digital cinema offers film festivals new chances and challenges.
Taking stock of an industry in a Wild West condition. By Reto Bühler
It has finally arrived, thanks to 3D: the breakthrough
of digital cinema. In the space of one year, the
number of digital screens in Switzerland tripled
(June 2010: 89 screens = 16%). The gateway to
digital cinema, however, remains primarily reserved
for 3D blockbusters, with which cinema operators
attempt to counterbalance exorbitant investment
costs. Hence, a film like Jean-Luc Godard’s digital
production “Film Socialisme” had to be converted to
35mm for its cinematic release because there was
no digital cinema to be found in the French-speaking
region of Switzerland. In Cannes the film was
digitally projected, at Godard’s request, “because
a digitally produced film also looks better when it
is digitally projected,” confirmed his producer Ruth
Waldburger.
Converting to digital cinema on the part of major
festivals is in full swing. By now most A-category
festivals offer DCP screenings in all programme
sections. This year five DCP films participated in
the competition in Berlin, as well as five in Cannes,
and four are expected by the submission deadline
in Locarno. In retrospective sections such as the
“Cannes Classics”, for example, DCP films have
already firmly established themselves: fifteen as
opposed to seven 35mm prints. The situation is similar
at film markets where, according to Catherine
Buresi, deputy director of the European Film Market
in Berlin, nearly half of all films are already screened
in digital versions (albeit only partly as DCP).
In contrast, other A-category festivals such as
San Sebastian still completely rely on 35mm.
Unfortunately, there is no way of saving money with
a DCP festival print for the moment – even though
it would be substantially cheaper to produce: in the
end there is always someone who requests a 35mm
print. A problem facing “small films” in particular
and therefore SWISS FILMS as well. The promotion
agency, which provides support financially with
the purchase of festival prints by Swiss producers,
recently had to face the fact that it was backing the
wrong horse. A change in the near future is very
unlikely, for a standardised conversion to digital
cinema by festivals is nowhere in sight: “The choice
of screening format is primarily one of aesthetics,”
explains Ruth Waldburger “and those who shoot
their films in 35mm would also like to view them
in 35mm.”
Hence, it comes as no surprise that in the short and
documentary film genres, whose productions are
almost exclusively digital nowadays, the digital retrofit
of festivals is already more advanced. Anyone
unable to offer digital screenings by now is essentially
fighting a losing battle. Indeed, chaos among
the plethora of formats exists. Apart from 35mm
prints, which are still indispensable, the obligatory
formats for screening are MiniDV, Beta, Digi Beta
and HDCam. With the short film genre in particular,
it occurs ever more frequently that festivals are no
longer sent a reel but rather a link for downloading
a HD file. At least with HD, an inexpensive format
is gaining ground in production that is on par with
digital cinema in terms of viewing quality, provided
high-end projectors are used.
But short and documentary film festivals also offer
interesting material for illustrating the digital development
potential of film festivals in other respects.
Several Internet platforms, such as “reelport” or
“withoutabox”, are already entertaining the thought
18
In the short and documentary film genres the digital retrofit of
festivals is already more advanced: HD screening at the
International Short Film Festival Winterthur 2009
DC stands for “digital cinema”; DCP for the films viewed
with the system (digital cinema package). Most of the 2K
technology used today offers a resolution of 2048x1080
pixels, which corresponds approximately with that of HD
(1920x1080 pixels). Crucial to the viewing quality, however,
is not primarily the resolution but rather the quality
of the projectors used.
In Cannes Jean-Luc Godard’s digital production “Film Socialisme”
was digitally projected, at the director’s request.
of a virtual film database which would benefit
festivals and producers. Instead of sending DVDs
around the globe, producers load their films on to
a server and activate them for the festivals of their
choice with a click of the mouse. Distributors, too,
such as the British experimental film label LUX or
regional film promoters such as the Scandinavian
promotion platform Nordisk Panorama are dispensing
with DVDs to promote their works and investing
in password-protected online catalogues, enabling
festivals and buyers to view the films via Internet.
Scepticism perseveres in the industry, however,
when it comes to web-based film databases, not
least because compatibility problems between
various formats and encoding still render systems
astonishingly prone to error.
Nevertheless, the server-based video library has
established itself as a standard feature at film
markets of major documentary and short film festivals.
And in addition to market screenings in
Cannes, a comparable tool for fiction films has
already launched with the “Cinando” film database.
Instead of having to deal with timetables at market
screenings, potential buyers can click through the
programme in their video boxes – on their own and
DVD-free. Some short film markets, like the one at
Clermont-Ferrand, have taken it one step further
and provide professionals attending the festival with
online streaming of all market films for six months.
All the same, this amounts to more than 6’000 productions
per year.
Such a bulk of films – a direct result of inexpensive
digital production and distribution possibilities –
also challenges the self-image of film festivals: the
shift from tracking down films that are hard to come
by to an even greater challenge of narrowing down
the flood of constantly available films to a manageable
amount. Imagine the festival as an orientation
aid and quality guarantee in the audiovisual jungle!
An exciting continuation of this idea has been undertaken
by five leading European documentary film
festivals: CPH:DOX Copenhagen, DOK Leipzig, IDFF
Jihlava, Planete Doc Review Warsaw and Visions
du Réel in Nyon operate a Website together under
the “Doc Alliance” label, promoting and distributing
documentary films. The festivals’ reputations vouch
for the quality of the films, available as streaming or
for downloading for zero to five Euros. Admittedly, a
formula has not yet been found that entices users
to whip out their credit cards. Most clicks generate
student films offered free of charge and somewhat
disenchanted are the turnovers so far at Visions
du Réel.
Digitalisation generates movement on the festival
scene. As long as no decision has been made yet
as to what will become standard there is plenty of
space for new ideas. But on the other hand, the joy
of such benefits is unfortunately tempered often
enough by compatibility issues.
A Locarno,
20
The DCP short film “Ich träume nicht auf Deutsch” by Ivana Lalovic
was among the 18 short films being screened at the 65th Mostra
Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica in Venice in 2008.
New chances and challenges for film festivals:
digital cinema at the Piazza Grande during the Film Festival Locarno
einzuspielen versuchen. So musste etwa Jean-Luc
Die meisten A-
Festivals bieten mittlerweile DCP-Screenings
in allen Programmsektionen an.
in anderer Hinsicht interessantes Anschauungsmaterial
für das digitale Entwicklungspotential von
22
Filmfestivals. Gleich mehrere Internetplattformen
Promotionsplattform «Nordisk Panorama»
verzichten für ihre Promotionsarbeit auf DVDs und
investieren in passwortgeschützte Online-Kataloge,
die Festivals und Einkäufer die Filme übers
Internet visionieren lassen.
führende europäische Dokumentarfilmfestivals in
Angriff genommen: CPH:DOX Kopenhagen, DOK
Leipzig, IDFF Jihlava, Planete Doc Review Warschau
