takes an entire year, and parade captain
Brian Metherall was right there helping
out for last year’s parade, along with
the night captains, lieutenants, junior
HHPC: Marina Windjammer
by Judi Ibarra
Ushers waiting for the students to arrive at concert hall.
We sailed through the Design House
and Cruise of Light fundraisers and are
now seeing the riches of our labor. The
Windjammers are enjoying the bubbling
faces and the rhythmic movements of second
graders as they are bedazzled by the
“Disneyland Salutes the American Band”.
Each different instrument is sounded and
described to these inquiring minds as the
white uniformed band members fi ll their
heads with excitement. Of course, Mickey
and friends add to the pomp as well as
area student musicians who join the band
for a song or two.
5th graders are being serenaded by
the Orange County Youth Symphony and
the Anaheim Ballet. Students watching
HHPC: Admiralty
by Bett Walton
students perform, is a wealth of motivation
to these “would be musicians”. Our
group is well on hand at the Renee and
Henry Segerstrom concert hall ushering
the children in and out for a day of musical
delight. Other students of Orange
County will be part of philharmonic
activity as our mobile unit makes its
way to school sites. Classroom presentations
are also part of the repertoire. We
love to interact with these various music
programs.
Of course, we love to be entertained
as well. Our February meeting was held
at the Orange County Museum of Art.
We, along with high schoolers, watched
the intriguingly talented, John Zeretzke,
Left to right: Madeline Campbell, Treasurer; Lori Anderson, Hospitality Chairman; Jan Goss, Recording
Secretary; Coco Malchow, Juniors Chairman.
Admiralty members turned out
with much enthusiasm for the elaborate
Denim & Diamonds Event to celebrate
all their hard work for the Cruise of
Lights and to welcome the new Grand
Marshal. Over 40 Admiralty revelers
enjoyed all the camaraderie and danced
to the music of Sal & the Headliners.
Ball Chairmen “Mike” Nielsen and Terri
Feterik were in charge of the spectacular
arrangements for the entire event for all
of HHPC.
Sherman Gardens in Corona del
Mar will be the place to be for Admiralty
8
writer of many modern ballet and dance
scores, leading Art/Educator in schools
nationally, guest composer and musical
artist at Ronald MacDonald House and
American Cancer Society summer camps
for children. Zeretzke performs for thousand
of students in education programs
using a wide variety of ethnic, exotic and
innovative instruments; including the
Hungarian bagpipe and the N. African
Bendir (a frame drum). He shared some
with us including the Nikolharpa, a hand
held beauty, looking similar to a zylophone,
and it created beautiful sounds.
The students were enthralled as he showed
us all how various sounds are created and
added on to sound tracks to give the
illusion of beauty, fright or excitement.
He had great technical and artistic demonstrations
to excite teenagers of varying
interests.
We look forward to more ushering
experiences and fun-fi lled faces as children
engage the music and instruments.
We have such fun at our gatherings. A
luncheon was enjoyed in February, at
Fashion Island.
Do YOU want to have musical fun,
volunteer activities and lots of delicious
food Join our friendly group and experience
a new treat. Call Susie Sampson.
(714) 892-0202
members as their installation of officers
for the 2010-2011 season takes place. The
gardens will have all their exquisite spring
flowers blooming and it will be a perfect
setting for the installation. Lori Anderson
has arranged a delicious luncheon following
the installation on April 15th.
Don’t forget to attend the huge “A
Fair to Remember” sale on Saturday and
Sunday, April 24th & 25th at Peter’s
Landing parking lot. It will be open from
9:00 to 4:00 both days with over 60 vendors
selling clothing, jewelry, accessories,
collectibles and boutique items.
Coco Malchow, Juniors Chairmen,
is asking HHPC members to contact her
if they have any silent auction items for
the Juniors Fashion Show on May 2nd.
This is always a delightful event that
benefits the Philharmonic and highlights
all the work the Juniors do for HHPC.

What fun! Calvin Free, husband
Calvin’s big cows were resplendent
Joyce Zimmerman, Christine Faubert,
Kim Willingham, and the boat parade
committee...happy, dancing up a storm,
and had an opportunity to celebrate at
Daytime Gourmet had a President’s
Luncheon in February at the home of
Barbara Devlin with June Ascolesi as
co-hostess. The menu consisted of Crab
Stuffed Mushrooms prepared by Pearl
Holmes, a delicious Apple Delight Salad
made by Marian Galanis, the Main Entrée,
a Mustard Tarragon Roast Chicken with
Egg Noodles was a joint operation of
Betty McCarthy and Mary Johnson while
Ruby Devin worked on the Sautéed Sugar
Snap Peas vegetable dish. Dessert was a
Lemon Cake with ice cream to celebrate
the February birthday ladies; Barbara
A lively “Dump-It” Party ensued after
delicious Italian fare from Buon Gusto
at the home of Ken and Maggie Flavia,
Saturday evening in February. Members
and spouses had cleaned out closets and
the end result was an array of unusual
items. Roars of laughter greeted Gene
Simone as he tried to entice others to steal
a bright green metallic wreath by modeling
it. Items that were quickly stolen
the maximum number of times were the
solar garden lights were also snatched away
from the original owners. Bette Hastie
managed to have her gifts stolen the most
so she hardly stayed in her seat. At the
end of the evening she finally went home
with a pink boudoir night light. The funniest
gift of Valentine boxers was opened
by Marian Galanis. Craig Johnson was
looking forward to lobsters in the lobster
bowl he opened. Betty McCarthy will
have to fill her cookie jar that she stole
from Pearl Holmes. The evening wasn’t
complete without the dessert of makeyour-own
sundaes. Everyone went home
with something new, perhaps next year’s
Dump-It gift. The Gourmet Dinner
group added a touch of Louisiana to their
menu in February, held at Rancho del Rey
Clubhouse. Loel Jones, co-hostess with
Pearl Holmes decorated with a Mardi
and grape salad with a cranberry dressing
made a delicious start. Pork tenderloins
La Familia
by Lesley Herbold
Mim Strickler, La Casa Board President Gil Morris, Lesley Herbold.
Spring has sprung! The grass has riz!
Let me tell you what our business is.
La Familia, whose work benefits
the Orangewood Children’s Home has
been actively involved with assisting
in providing for the needs of some very
deserving children for many decades.
We are please to announce that at our
recent board meeting our President, Mim
Strickler, as well as Publicity Chair and
La Casa board member Lesley Herbold
presented checks to Orangewood totaling
over $7,000.00! We were very fortunate
to receive donations from the Son’s
of the American Legion ~ $3000.00;
Poinsettia sales ~ $3000.00; and a check
for $1,100.00 from Luanne Cook’s family
who, rather than have Christmas gifts,
donated the money to the children’s home
instead. To all who participated and
donated so generously we wish to express
our sincerest thank you.
On March 14th we held our annual
Irish Hooley which was a lively party to
celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at the simply
marvelous waterfront home of Mim
Strickler. This year we held a ‘music
jam.’ Members were asked to bring their
talents along with their harmonica’s,
tambourine’s and their singing voices
to help join in our ‘fun-raising’. We
were all very pleased and want to give
a special thank you to our special guest
artist Sueannah Nicholas who performed
and to Scott Strickler for his assistance
throughout the evening.
On June 14, 2010 we will be holding
our annual installation luncheon at the
Old Ranch Country Club. If you are
interested in volunteering some time
or your talents to our organization you
would be most welcome. There are
always positions to be fi lled and there
Sea Isle Garden Club
by Caron Mount
Standing: Jackie Neil, Lolly McHardy, Guy Stivers, Terry Hayden, Janet Littlejohn, Mary Ann Brinket, Cathy Kelly, Lucille Mascolli, Carolyn Platt, Coco
Malchow. Seated: Susan La Pittus, Caron Mount, Anne White, and Beverly Allen. (Thanks to Cindy Allen for taking the pictures.)
SIGC members are so excited at the
progress being made on Edinger Parkway.
In February we invited Guy Stivers to our
meeting. As the Landscape Architect who
drew the plans for the project, Guy was
able to educate us on the list of trees and
plants the City of Huntington Beach will
be installing. The ‘California Friendly’
landscape will be drought tolerant, have
great color, size, and texture variety, with
subtle seasonal changes in the foliage.
There will be 275 trees, and 4500 plants,
with mulch laid to protect them during
the first years as they get established.
Since the club members had been
asked so many questions by members of
the community, Sea Isle decided to invite
all our neighbors to a Town Hall meeting
the evening of March 4th. Dorothy
Ralphs, SIGC Liaison to the City, invited
HB Mayor Cathy Green, Councilman
Keith Bohr, and the city’s director of our
project, Eric Charlonne. Mayor Green
congratulated our Harbour community
on being the first group to jointly fund a
beautification project of this magnitude in
the City, because the community support
was a deciding factor on the awarding
of the Orange County Transit Grant we
received. Keith Bohr reminded us of the
long time we have waited to have the
City get on board with this beautification
of our neighborhood. Mr. Charlonne
then answered residents’ inquires about
the construction time line, the plants,
walkway, the palms, maintenance, and
street signs. He explained that some
unexpected asphalt had been discovered
under the dirt, probably an old roadway,
and therefore a section of under-soil had
to be redistributed toward the fence, so
it would not hamper the growth of the
plants and trees. Mr. Charlonne still
expects the landscape to be completed by
June.
President Janet Littlejohn explained
that even though the community has
done so much to help with raising funds
and making suggestions, it is the City
that has the final decision on the final
components of the Edinger Parkway.
Our hospitality committee, Carolyn
Platt, Lucille Mascoli, and Cathy Kelly
arranged for members to bring cupcakes,
cookies, and coffee to treat the attendees.
Maria Lockie provided the flyers through
her business ‘Print n Copy’ located in the
City of Commerce. The design plans were
displayed, and the one hundred people in
attendance left with great enthusiasm for
14
the soon-to-be-completed landscaping.
SIGC has plans for more
improvements to the Edinger Parkway,
though we may have to go through the
whole City approval process again. But we
can do it. This club was founded in order
to make Huntington Harbour a more
beautiful place to live.
In February, Janet Littlejohn and
Caron Mount attended the Orange
County District Garden Club meeting
in Lake Forest. The President of the
California State Garden Club, Mary Ann
Lucas, was a special guest. Her designated
project is “Kids Growing Strong,” which
encourages children to become gardeners.
What a great way to involve our children
and grandchildren in taking care of the
environment and enjoying nature.
Our club had an excursion to
the Beverly Hills neighborhood of the
Virginia Robinson Gardens, established
by the department store family. The six
acres of gardens are a combination of
formal, functional, and tropical areas,
with brick paths leading past ponds,
fountains, statues, and of course lush
plants. We were fortunate that Program
chairperson, Donna Davis, had arranged
for lunch at Porta Villa Bistro, with their
fabulous salads, sandwiches, soups, and
Italian specialties. The day provided a
feast for all our senses as well as our social
appetites.
SIGC is looking forward to our Luau
Fund Raiser, May 21st. Chairperson Lolly
McHardy promises the Hawaiian theme
should be very festive with live Polynesian
entertainment. See ad on the next page.
A Land Lover’s Garden Club
by Eustelle Bosler
Touring Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens.
Patti Kenmore, Annie Hall, Mary Shebell
In Lynn Senske’s absence (we’re so
happy that the surgery went well and
Lynn is recovering quickly), Linda Axel,
vice president of the ALL Garden Club,
presided over the January 20 meeting at
which our featured speaker was Annie
Hall, the Orange County Garden Clubs
District Chair (as well as a very knowledgeable
rosarian). Annie shared a number
of excellent ideas about the care and nurture
of roses; in addition, she pointed out
new rose hybrids and reminded rose lovers
among us (who isn’t) what old bushes
need in pruning care in the Southern
California area. Annie Hall is a frequent
speaker at our meetings, and she always
brings a wealth of delightful and useful
information. Following her talk, Ms. Hall
answered questions from members as we
sat down to a lovely luncheon at the Yacht
Club.
Donna Gray, the Treasurer of ALL,
made arrangements for a February trip to
Claremont in order to visit the Rancho
Santa Ana Botanical Gardens there. The
RSABG is the largest botanic garden
dedicated exclusively to California’s native
plants. The garden’s mission statement is
the promotion of “botany, conservation,
and horticulture to inspire, inform, and
educate the public and the scientific community
about California’s native flora.”
We especially will be looking for the large
collection of Manzanitas, which flower
from late November through early March.
The March 17 meeting of the ALL
Garden Club featured Keith Rattay,
Landscape Architect for the city of
Mission Viejo, who had a number of
wonderful insights about good design to
accommodate small spaces. Keith was
quite helpful in answering questions and
suggesting specific design ideas for yards
in Huntington Harbour.
On April 21, we plan to visit the San
Juan Capistrano Mission and gardens.
Member Terri Feterik is making arrangements
for this delightful excursion.
We will travel via Amtrak to San Juan
Capistrano where we will have a guided
tour of the mission and its gardens. We’ll
lunch nearby before returning.
Of course, we’re looking forward to
our annual outing to the horse races at
Santa Anita this spring as well.
So many wonderful plans to look
forward to--- We continue to invite all of
you who have an interest in these kinds
of activities to join us! Linda Axel, membership
chair, can be contacted at (714)
held each spring.
During the meeting, members were
informed that theirs ranks among the
Bolsa Chica Land Trust
by Flossie Horgan
The road from one idea to reality
has been long and winding, but now that
the bridge is finally in place and officially
opened, here’s a recap of the history:
Ever since the Bolsa Chica Land
Trust formed in June of 1992, it was clear
that the access to the Bolsa Chica Mesa
from the Warner street parking lot was
dangerous.
In 2001, at a Land Trust event at
Bolsa Chica, then Assemblyman Tom
Harman discussed the need for a safe
public access to the Bolsa Chica Mesa
with BCLT members and DFG staff.
Over the next several years the bridge
project plodded slowly along, until May
of 2007, when the Land Trust decided
to aggressively promote it. At that time,
the cost for the bridge was tagged at
$440,000.00. The Wildlife Conservation
Board and the DFG were contributing to
the bridge but there was still a funding
gap. Then Supervisor Jim Silva helped
get the County of Orange to contribute
funds to the Bridge. And it was this point
that the Trust launched the Walk to the
Wildside footbridge campaign.
Our wild idea was to raise $75,000.00
to help fi ll the gap. Our first donation
came from seven year old Madison
Makoff. She donated her birthday money
to the Land Trust efforts. Then we had
the good fortune to have Chuck and
Barbara Steel offer a $25,000 match. They
said that if the Trust could raise $25,000
in three months they would match it
with a $25,000 donation. We shared all
of this with our members as well as the
Amigos and the Conservancy. In just
three months, we met our match and then
some and at a public event in September
of 2007, the Land Trust presented a
check to the Wildlife Conservation Board
for $75,000. Further, the Pacific Life
Foundation also contributed $25,000.
From that point on the Bridge
project had to work it way through various
governmental channels: The Coastal
Commission issued its permit in June
2008. In late 2008 the State Architect,
then the Governor put a freeze on State
projects as a result of the budget crisis.
We all waited and hoped that the Bridge
would not get lost in the mix. State funds
for the bridge were finally released.
In May 2009 the WCB unanimously
approved additional augmented funding
for the Bridge. Bids went out and
construction began in October 2009.
A December delivery date was
delayed because of transportation permit
difficulties which Supervisor Moorlach
helped facilitate. Bad Weather further
postponed the December delivery.
But then, finally, nearly nine years
after the first talks, the bridge was
installed on January 13, 2010.
An official Dedication Ceremony
will take place on March 4th, 2010.
Huntington Harbour Garden Club
by Barbara Devlin & Peggy Mouritz
At the February meeting of the HHGC are Doreen Hill, Speaker Carol Redhead, Virginia Whipple and
Pam Smart.
The HHGC Garden Of The Month
Award for January 2010 was awarded
to the garden of Kathy and Timothy
Stevecove at 16292 Wildfire Circle
(Trinidad Island). The home occupies a
large corner lot on Trinidad Island and
the full 150 foot frontage presents pleasant
continuity of design. Steps leading to
the front door are flanked by large rocks
and mature topiary trained black pines.
Strawberries are used for ground cover,
punctuated by low shrubs and grasses.
A handsome long brick wall defines the
property line at the side of the house,
and is set back several feet to allow for
continuous planting that emerges with
the front areas. The corner lawn has two
planter areas, with double trunk queen
palms, sago palms and shrubs.
The February HHGC meeting was
held at the home of Sherry Bullock with
co-hostesses Pam Smart and Jane Erdman
assisting with a lovely luncheon on the
waterfront deck. Carol Redhead from
26
Armstrong Nursery was the Speaker of
the day. She showed members how to
design a pot for the sun and one for the
shade. She used E.B. Stone potting mix
and added polymer to the soil that makes
gel in the soil and the roots will grown
through the gel and get stronger and it
will help keep the soil moist. She told us
to put a screen over the hole in the bottom
of the pot to help keep the soil in
the pot after watering. A plant made for
the shade will last about 6 months and
she used ivies, cyclamen and ferns for the
shade planter and after planting she said
to water thoroughly.
The sun planter theme was pink
and white double white impatiens. She
used “Jack’s” fertilizer on the plantings.
She brought along proteas (a plant from
South Africa) which can be put in the
house or outside to show us and brought
along an old favorite, the piggyback plant
and had all the members plant a root
from the piggyback plant. She told us a
trick to find a place for different plants in
your home—hold your hand over plant
and if you see a shadow it needs medium
light, if you see no shadow it is a low light
plant. The Chinese evergreen and the
philodendron are both low light plants.
She also suggested using a moisture meter
on house plants to see when they need to
be watered.
Carol Redhead also told us that she
is a volunteer in Horticulture Therapy
at the VA Hospital in Long Beach and
that the hospital has a beautiful garden
on the grounds where veterans work in
the garden growing flowers, plants and
vegetables.
The February HHGC Garden Of
The Month Award was given to the garden
of Dr. Ron and Elizabeth Gilbert. A
fine olive tree dominates the corner of this
attractive garden, with lawns stretching to
the driveway on one side, and for 100 feet
on the other. An undulating brick-edged
planted area comes between the lawn and
the high courtyard wall. This is edged with
white alyssum backed by red azaleas and
white lilies, giving a beautiful continuity
of color design. There are pygmy date
palms, flax and giant birds of paradise for
dramatic contrast to the low grasses and
shrubs. A porch with four arches leads to
the front door of the Mediterranean style
residence, with urns between the arches,
spilling prolific ivy down the sides.

Our activities and events will increase
this year with our newly formed fishing
group headed by Tim Marshall. And what
a kickoff event it was, last month when
his group brought back four, 30 pound
Humboldt Squid just off Pt. Ferman.
Calamari for every one!
We are forming our new golfing
group as we speak, Our kickoff
tournament will be a Best Ball Fund
Raiser and Silent Auction sponsored by
our newly formed, 501 c3 “Huntington
Beach Sailing Foundation” Open to the
public. Tentatively set for July. More info
will follow.
Putting together a 501 c3
Foundation was not a task to be taken
lightly as our committee will attest to. I
don’t know how many times during the
past three years we wondered “Are we
ever going to get through this” It was
my honor to chair this committee with
March raft up in Newport Harbour
the help of Lloyd Clauss, Bill Wheeler,
Dr. Mark Monroe, Jim Wallace and our
Star volunteer, Attorney, Ron Lee, giving
literally 100s of hours of his time to bring
this all together. This new Foundation
will now open the door for donations to
our KID’S Sailing School. Funds we need
desperately to renew our fleet of Sabots
and establish Scholarships.
Bolsa Chica Conservancy
by Diana Ortiz and Kati Patonai
Bird diversity is at its peak during the
winter at Bolsa Chica. Waterfowl, including
Mallards, Northern Pintails and a variety
of diving ducks such as Redheads, Lesser
Scaups, Ruddy Ducks and Buffleheads
are common, and wintering shorebirds
abound during the winter months. At
low tide, the sight of sandpipers, Marbled
Godwits, Willets, Long-billed Curlews,
American Avocets and Black-necked Stilts
wading and foraging in the mudflats are
fascinating to watch. The Brown Pelicans
sport their breeding colors during the winter
months as Blue Herons prepare to nest.
Cormorants, Egrets, Mergansers, Grebes
and a variety of raptors grace all around the
wetlands in great numbers. There is much
to see and explore!
Spring brings a new variety of birds
to the wetlands, such as the fast diving
California Least Terns, which nest in
the hundreds at the Southern part of the
reserve. These birds deserve recognition
and protection due to their endangered status,
and they find a safe haven during their
nesting season at the Reserve. Larger terns,
including Forsters and Elegant Terns are a
mesmerizing sight to watch as they hover
above the water in search of small fish at
Inner and Outer Bolsa Bays. Photographers
are drawn from various parts of the world
to enjoy the abundance and closeness of
these amazing birds.
