TNL’s Tempting
Providence April 9 at
8:00 p.m.
Tempting Providence is a story of courage and strength told with simple
elegance. British-trained nurse & midwife Myra Grimsley arrived in
Newfoundland from her native London, England in 1921 after hearing of the
desperate need for her work in rural communities. She was one of the first group
of outport nurses who became a legend for performing a variety of medical tasks,
from delivering babies to setting bones to extracting teeth. All this she did in all
kinds of weather while traveling by foot, horse, dogsled, boat along the 320-
kilometer rugged Northern Peninsula. She was known throughout Newfoundland
and Labrador as "Florence Nightingale of the North". Tempting Providence is a
wonderful, heart-felt portrayal of Nurse Bennett who has been honored many
times over by the Governments of Canada and Britain. Since it’s world premiere
on June 1, 2002 at TNL’s Gros Morne Theatre Festival, Tempting Providence has
played to more than 70,000 people in 370 performances in 9 Canadian provinces,
one territory, Ireland, England, Scotland and Australia. Now, in 2012, Tempting
Providence will set on a provincial tour including 70 communities.
Amelia Curran
May 5 at 8:00 p.m.
With the release of Hunter, Hunter, the much-anticipated follow-up to War Brides, Amelia Curran
journeyed both home and further afield than ever before. The album, her first recorded in her
hometown of St. John’s, signaled Curran’s definitive arrival onto national and international
scenes. Curran’s 2008 release, War Brides, captured the attention of critics across Canada and
lead to the pronouncement of Curran as one of this country’s finest singer-songwriters.
Rich in metaphor, language and instrumentation, Hunter, Hunter speaks to unrequited longing,
the notion of belonging and reflections on love both lost and found. “It’s Hunter, Hunter, not
Hunter, Gatherer, if that makes sense,” she says. “It conveys a kind of haunting – a vibe of
necessary cruelty to dig down to the deeper meanings of being alive day by day.” From
acoustic numbers to full band tracks, Curran grapples with notions of self, memory,
forgiveness and desire. “There is a reason matters of the heart have been the subject for artists
for centuries. It is uncontrollable and owns us. Even to give up on love is to break one's own
heart, which in itself is a precious part of love.
In front of an adoring hometown crowd in St. John’s, NL, Amelia received her first Juno Award
for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year (Hunter, Hunter) in April 2010. The album and artist
have received four ECMA nominations, 4 Music NL awards, 3 Music NS awards, a spot on
Exclaim’s Wood, Wires & Whiskey coveted year-end and a place on the 2010 Polaris Long List.
A cross-Canadian folk festival favourite, Amelia has also toured with The Skydiggers, Luke
Doucet and others. Hunter, Hunter has solidified Amelia’s reputation as an heir to Leonard
Cohen’s songwriting throne.

Nathan Rogers
May 12 at 8:00 p.m.
NATHAN SINGS STAN
Some say he was born into it, some that he was born with it, while others claim he has earned it.
With one foot planted firmly in folk music’s traditional roots and the other reaching into its
dynamic future, Nathan Rogers isn’t entirely sure what ‘it’ is; singer, songwriter, guitarist, throatchanter,
percussionist, revivalist, or innovator. Whatever it may be, “Nathan has the ability to
turn the folk world on its ears.”
Like many, it all started at home but what a unique home it was. Nathan’s first experience
picking up the guitar was an attempt to copy the challenging riffs his brother David created after
studying with celebrated virtuosos Don Ross and Preston Reed. His sister Beth demanded
perfection in all vocals as any self-exacting classical voice teacher would, while his mother
initiated him into the business side of the music industry. His father and uncle informed both his
writing style and an ethos of Canadian people that shines in his lyrics.
Nathan’s performance style leaves the audiences wondering where the rest of the band is hiding.
Singing, chanting, playing the guitar and stomping, he fills any stage with “magnificent
powerfully clear lyrics and arrangements.” Described as ‘intelligent and witty’, Nathan will ‘move
men and women to tears with his sound and conviction.”
Nathan has recently become an adept throat singer, specializing in the Tuvan and Mongolian
styles. A cultural tour-de-force in his own right, Nathan now brings a uniquely eastern falvour to
a western tradition.
Nathan's new album, "the Gauntlet" is available on Borealis Records and has met with very
positive critical review thus far. Please visit www.borealisrecords.com

Isla Grant – June 12
• Isla Grant International Singer / Songwriter
Isla Grant was born in Wigtownshire, Scotland but when she was
a few months old her family moved away and eventually settled in
the Scottish Borders.
When she was about fourteen Isla started to sing in the folk clubs
mainly in Scotland and in the north east of England, then she
discovered country music and that changed her style in music.
Now after eleven albums, some of which have gone triple
platinum, Isla has branched out and started her own record label
(I.G.E.) and released her first album on her own label in October
2008.
OIL and WATER
June 21 – 8:00 p.m.
OIL AND WATER
Written by Robert Chafe
Directed by Jillian Keiley
Composed by Andrew Craig
Musical Direction by Kellie Walsh
Oil and Water is Artistic Fraud’s theatrical retelling of the incredible true
story of Lanier Phillips. Shipwrecked aboard the USS Truxton in 1942, Mr.
Phillips was the only African American survivor. What happened to this son
of the racially segregated south at the hands of the residents of the nearby
town of St. Lawrence forever altered his world, and became a legendary
story that still resonates with power nearly 70 years later.
Artistic Fraud’s production features a cast of ten supreme actor/singers, and
an a capella score by Andrew Craig that blends the Newfoundland folk
tradition with African American gospel.
