Two Lotto wins Uenuku to star at Te Papa
for Te Awamutu
Tainui’s great taonga Uenuku will soon
leave the Waipa for Wellington’s Te Papa to
Two Te Awamutu stores take centre place in the exhibition Tai timu,
sold second division winning
Lotto tickets this week — each
one worth $18,189.
The tickets were sold at
Paper Plus and Toyworld and
Fresh Choice Supermarket.
NZ Lotteries’ chief executive
Todd McLeay advises anyone
who bought their ticket from
any of these winning stores
should write their name on the
back of the ticket and check it
immediately at any Lotto outlet.
NZ’s longest
tai pari, Tainui: Journey of a People. He will be
away for two-and-a-half years.
Uenuku is the taonga that inspired so many
people during the Te Maori Exhibition which
toured America in 1984.
A highly treasured taonga of the Tainui
people, Uenuku is said to be one of the
traditional gods or spirits of Maori, and
manifests as a rainbow.
‘‘We urge anyone who hasn’t yet visited
Uenuku to come and see him before he leaves
at the beginning of August,’’ says Stephanie
Lambert, senior curator at the Te Awamutu
Museum where Uenuku is customarily
housed.
Many people have been working busily
behind the scenes for more than six months to
make Uenuku’s journey to Te Papa possible.
The Waipa Lodge is joining
The decision for the taonga to travel to
country (Kaitaia to Invercargill) Wellington was negotiated between Te Awa-
to stage ‘The Freemasons
Local people are invited to
attend the event at 10am on
Saturday at the Lodge Rooms
on the corner of Albert Park
Drive and Sloane Street.
The fundraiser is in support
of the new Te Awamutu
Playground, which is under
construction beside the Te
Awamutu Events Centre.
As well as a scrumptious
morning tea there will also be a
cooking demonstration and a
mutu Museum Trust Board, the office of King
Tuheitia, Waipa District Council and Te Papa.
‘‘Members of Te Awamutu Trust Board
were in two minds over the request to send
Uenuku to Wellington,’’ says Museum Trust
Board chairman Dean Taylor.
‘‘On one hand he is the pride and joy of our
collection. On the other, the chance to share
this magnificent taonga with a wider audience
was hard to turn down,’’ says Mr Taylor.
‘‘ It gave us an opportunity to strengthen
our relationships with Tainui and the wider
museum community. Uenuku’s absence also
provides us with a challenge to share his
stories with our museum audiences in new
ways’’.
Have your say on velodrome
I hope all readers of the Courier
saw the Waikato Regional Councils
advertisement asking you all to
‘‘have your say’’ with regard to a $6
million dollar contribution for the
cycling centre proposal destined for
Cambridge.
I have contacted the 0800 number
for more information and can tell you
the submission forms, attached to the
statement of intent, will be available
from Te Kuiti.
We are ever so grateful to these
wonderful towns for really getting
behind us 110%
I would also like to thank our
special little helper, Mia, for all her
hard work and again to Allie, Verity,
Sharn, D.J, Gabbie and all those
mums who baked and worked hard to
get this off the ground.
We also would like to announce
the winner of the Tupperware raffle
— Chloe Marchbank.
Our next fundraising event will be
held tomorrow at The Warehouse
from 11am-3pm. We will have baking
Come one and all and help us to
reach our targets: to get the garage
done up so we can move the
playgroup out there, and to pay for a
heatpump which we desperately
need.
So one final thank you very much
to all those who support us, for you
are supporting your future when you
support our children.
YOUR ONE STOP SHOP!
Double standards
over water supply
J. Cotterel’s July 21st letter has prompted me to
write regarding out town water supply.
For many years there has been an ongoing
seepage of water from the first water tank on the
left going up Greenhill Drive.
Also, for many years there is treated water,
piped from this tank, running into a culvert at the
rate of about 10 litres a minute, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week for 52 weeks of the year. Would
someone from Council please tell us how many
leaking household taps this waste of water equates
to?
Because of the summer water restrictions
Council imposes on ratepayers, and because of the
number of years this wastage has been occurring,
could it be said that Council has double standards?
I understand that in recent times an endeavour
was made to rectify the seepage from the tank but
without success. Alas! Waste of time, energy and
money.
Also, it is my understanding that some of the
water supply pipes etc are the originals from many
years ago which makes our water infrastructure
somewhat fragile. Should a disaster occur, requiring
repair work of more than three days our town
would have no water supply.
Perhaps more of us need to be aware that water
is essential for all forms of life to live and that clean
water is necessary for hygiene, health and recreation;
and that each drop of water is precious that
fills a tank.
Should an efficiently functioning and well
maintained infrastructure that meets the needs of
a community and allows for its growth and
development be a priority?
Golf Course last week was flown to Waikato Hospital
by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance.
The 54-year-old female driver had apparently
fallen asleep, left the road and rolled into a ditch.
The woman was trapped in the vehicle for
approximately one hour. Her partner was also
injured and was taken to Waikato Hospital by St
Golden service rewarded
LONGSERVING volunteer firefighter Grant Mitchell sits next to his wife Lisa and daughters Aimee (right)
and Abby.
Te Awamutu Fire Brigade’s
Gold Star Award Evening, to
celebrate and honour 25 years of
service by Grant Mitchell, was a
real family affair.
Making the award was Don
Hallett, a former Te Awamutu
Chief Fire Officer and past president
of the United Fire Brigades
Association (UFBA). He is also Mr
Mitchell’s uncle.
Seated at the front of the hall
was Mr Mitchell, his wife Lisa and
daughters Aimee and Abby. They
had been piped in through the
largest guard of honour in memory.
Mr Hallett said joining a volunteer
fire brigade is a huge
commitment of time and effort,
with weekly training nights,
special training on some
weekends and a 24 day cover to
answer fire and emergency calls
in the area.
‘‘This requires a special person
to do this for 25 years, and
Grant is one of those people,’’ he
said.
‘‘It is a fact that the fire service
could not operate as it does today
without its volunteers.
‘‘The UFBA Gold Star is the
most coveted award in the service.
Only 6% of people who join
the service carry on to receive it.
‘‘This gold star tonight is the
34th that has been issued to a
member of the Te Awamutu Brigade
in its 98 year history and
number 6767 issued by the UFBA
in its 133 year history.
Before making the presentation,
Mr Hallett recognised the
part that spouses and partners
play in supporting the firefighters
in their role.
Uenuku departing Museum
From page 1.
Before moving to Te
Awamutu Museum,
senior curator Ms Lambert
worked as loans
officer at Te Papa —
part of the team bringing
taonga and objects
into Te Papa for their
exhibitions.
‘‘I didn’t anticipate
the chance to use that
knowledge again on a
project as close to my
heart as this’’.
The last day to visit
Uenuku at Te Awamutu
Museum is Monday,
August 1.
During August a
refurbished exhibition,
including an Uenuku
interpretive zone with
video stories about the
taonga, will be
installed. This will open
to the public on Saturday,
August 27 at 10am.
He said without that support it
would be hard to run a volunteer
brigade — and pointed out that
Lisa Mitchell had performed in
her support role to the highest
level.
Mrs Mitchell, along with other
achievements, received the award
for outstanding contribution from
the Brigade members partner for
three three years running from
2008.
In recognition of her contribution,
Mrs Mitchell was given a
unique honour — a certificate of
appreciation from the UFBA.
Mr hallett also recognised
employers of volunteer firefighters
and the self-employed members
of the brigade, who without
their input, it would be very hard
for them to maintain their cover
for workday fire calls.
Mr Mitchell joined the Te
Awamutu Brigade in April, 1986.
He says his uncle Don told him to.
In the following years he
became involved in all areas of
the Brigade, living in the Station
for nine years and competing with
the Te Awamutu team for six
years. He also ran in a team that
competed in Australia in 1992 and
1996.
Mr Mitchell served on the
Central North Island Sub Association
as president and is now a life
member.
He assisted with training of
brigade members and ran the
high angle rescue team for nine
years.
Another role was as casual
trainer teaching volunteers for
the Bay/Waikato area for 14
years.
He worked in the Hamilton
control room for 10 months in 1998
and after the control room closed
he spent six years at Hamilton
Airport Rescue Fire as a station
officer and training officer,
achieving his National Certificate
in Airport Level 3 and passed his
firefighter D1 exams.
At the same time he remained
a member of the Te Awamutu
Brigade.
In October, 2008 he attended a
station officers course at Whyte
Island, Brisbane, achieving the
position of Senior Station Officer.
Mr Mitchell has since been
employed by the Fire Service as a
Volunteer Support Officer and
regretfully tendered his resignation
as a volunteer firefighter —
although he is still fully involved
with assisting over 300 volunteers
at 14 stations on a professional
basis.
In his spare time over the past
quarter century, Mr Mitchell also
served as a territorial soldier in
the New Zealand Army for 17
years and he was a St John
Volunteer.
During his 25 years with Te
Awamutu Fire Brigade, Mr
Mitchell was present 1434 times —
a 93% turnout, which is a great
record.
Mr Mitchell said it had been a
pleasure to serve his community
in this way — and also honoured
his other family members who are
volunteer firefighters.
He pointed out that between
himself, uncles Don and Frank
Hallett, cousin Peter Hallett and
uncle Russell Percy (Te Puke)
there were four Gold Star holders
and nearly 130 years volunteer
service.
Te Awamutu Playground shaping up
Te Awamutu’s new playground
is inching closer to completion as
Roktopus prepare the site for the
installation of the new equipment.
Managing director Theo Jaques
and operations manager Alex
Handcock have been on site installing
safety surfacing around the
bases of the equipment and ensuring
all the levels are right.
Roktopus has been in the playground
industry for 15 years and is
supplying the bulk of the play
equipment.
Mr Handcock says the weather
has created some difficulties, but
progress is being made towards
having the site ready for the next
stage, which is for contractors to
install the soft fall.
Regional Council wants your views on velodrome
Public consultation on a
opened last week.
At an extraordinary council
meeting last week Waikato
Regional Council
finalised the statement of
proposal detailing the costs
and benefits of the proposed
velodrome and the rating
options.
Chairman Peter Buckley
said the council had vigorously
debated the issues and
options.
he said.
The council wants to
know whether people support
a $6 million grant
toward the $28.5 million dollar
velodrome, and their preferred
rating option.
Funding would come from
internal borrowing from the
investment fund and repaid
by ratepayers over a 20-year
period. The loan will be
charged 5.65% interest
reviewed every three years
as part of the Long Term
Plan, resulting in an annual
rating requirement of
$601,109.
The council is seeking
feedback on two ratepayer
funding options to repay the
loan.
The first option is a
region-wide flat rate of $3.18
which spreads the cost
evenly across the region
The second is a two-tier
funding system which recognises
the localised benefit of
the proposed facility. This
would see properties in Waipa,
addition to the cost of the
Waipa $1 million contribution
which amounts to
$4.84 per rateable property.
The regional council will also
be asking the region’s territorial
authorities to submit
on the statement of proposal
stating their formal position
on whether the regional
council should apply a
regional rate to fund the $6
million. Councils will be
asked to identify their preferred
rating option.
Great plants for winter gardens
The days are beginning to slowly
get longer, and we can already see
our gardens starting to come to life
with numerous plants now making a
spectacular show.
Attached to this article, you will
see a photo of a floral arrangement
that my wife Val has created from
plants that are in flower or looking
great in our garden at the moment.
Chimonanthus Praecox —
commonly called winter sweet:
Back 20 years ago, this used to be
one of those plants that every keen
gardener found the room for one of
these plants in their garden, because
they have the most beautiful
fragrance that you could wish for,
and they flowered at a time of the
year when not much else was
happening in the garden.They are
tough, get to about 2.5 metres, but
does respond well to summer trimming
and you can keep it at whatever
height you like. You could even use it
as a winter flowering hedge at the
back of the border. It has pale yellow
flowers on mass in july/august over a
semi deciduous bush .
Daphne: Yes, the ever popular
sweetly fragrant daphne family is
another must for any gardener wanting
to add some beautiful fragrance
to their garden. There are quite a few
varieties in this family of plants, pink
— D.Odora Leucanthe and the pure
white — D.Odora Alba are the most
popular.Daphnes like acid loving
soils, make sure you feed with a slow
release acid fertiliser every september
and march to keep them in top
condition. Daphnes are unfortunately
susceptible to viruses, which over a
period of time causes your daphne
plant to lose vigour and health. Its not
something you can do much about,
but consul yourself to the fact that
every 8-10 years you will need to
replace your old plant with a new
high health plant.Daphnes like a little
shade in the hot afternoon if possible,
and good drainage. I have
planted some in our garden as a low
growing winter flowering hedge, and
at the moment, they are a real delight
to walk past, the perfume hits you
well before you get near the plants.
Hellobores — winter rose:
These perennials are so easy to
grow and so dependable, providing a
great array of colours in the depths of
winter.They do very well under
deciduous trees, or even at the front
of the perennial border.Over the
summer months they sort of go into a
state of semi dormancy, but as soon
as the weather starts to get cooler in
autumn, they want to come into life.I
advise my landscape clients at the
end of february to cut off all the old
foliage and feed with a slow release
fertiliser, which causes the plants to
quickly produce a new set of healthy
clean foliage. Plant breeders around
the world are now coming up with
some truly amazing new hybrids in
the hellebore family of plants, and
this will i am sure keep a keen
interest in these plants in the coming
years.Hellebore flowers are very
good for floral arrangements, and
last a good amount of time in water.
Leucadendrons: We can see
them coming into flower, in Waikato
gardens at the moment.They are
easy to grow, if you follow a few set of
rules.
• They must have very good drainage,
all leucadendrons detest wet
feet, and very quickly will get
attacked by phytophora(a soil borne
fungous)-if this happens then its
certain death to the plant. You can
open the soil up by mixing some
pumice, pea metal, organic compost,
etc.
• Feed with a slow release fertiliser,
which has low phosphate.They do
not like your general garden fertiliser,
because the nutrient level is not right
8240921AA
for them,
• They like a site with good air
movement,
• Each year after the flowers have
finished looking at their best, give the
plant a reasonable prune, taking off
about 25% of its existing foliage. This
will cause it to resprout with some
new foliage, and keep the plant nice
and compact. They are shallow
rooting, and even though they don’t
mind the wind, we don’t want to put
unnecessary strain on the root system,
by having a huge amount of top
growth
• They don’t like extremely heavy
frosts, a bit of frostcloth can help if
the weather turns extremely cold.
We have some leucandendrons
in our garden at the moment, and
each plant has about 150 flowers on,
a truly great site at this time of year.In
the photo the yellow leucadendron
you see is called L. Inca Gold- a
great smaller growing variety, with
masses of flowers all winter and they
stay on the bush into late spring./
early summer.
Aspidistra Shooting Stars —
cast iron plant: If you are into floral
art, then this is a plant you should
definitely have in your garden. Shooting
Stars is relatively new to the
market, but like others in the aspidistra
family it is extremely tough to
drought, low light, and the leaves will
last a very long time in a floral
arrangement.We have this plant
growing very successfully outside in
our garden under a lot of other
foliage, and it looks fantastic with its
white spotted markings on dark green
foliage.Also a great plant for patios/
indoor plant-especially if you are
forgetful about watering, this plant is
very forgiving, and wont turn up its
toes if you forget about it for a while.
A good plant if you want to just
add foliage to the garden without the
drama of flowers.
We do the
groundwork
La Leche member
Stephanie Gudgeon has
organised the second at
Both events will have
a 10am ‘arrive time’
next Friday (August 5)
so that mums can have a
they join others around
the country trying to
breastfeeding simultaneously.
Aisling O’Brien
joined Te Awamutu La
She knew about La
‘‘I have come to realise
that everyone has a
be comforted.’’
She says helping
them personally and
how breastfeeding fits
into their family are just
two of the concepts she
explored during the
Cycling Trust
pleased that
public decide
The Home of Cycling Trust is delighted that
the future of the region’s Cycling Centre of
Excellence in now in the hands of the community.
Waikato Regional Council’s period of public
consultation, over whether or not to contribute
$6M to the project, opened last week.
Central Government, through SPARC, has
already named the Waikato Bay of Plenty
Region as its preferred location and will
contribute $7M to the facility.
‘‘We anticipate that the feedback will give
Councillors a clear mandate to support this
investment for our community,’’ says Home of
Cycling interim chief executive Geoff Balme.
‘‘We’re talking about an average of just over
$3 per ratepayer per year for a facility that will
generate not only significant economic benefits
but also enormous social and health
benefits.
‘‘There has been plenty of misinformation
in the public realm and we hope this period of
consultation will give us the opportunity to set
the record straight.
‘‘This is not just a velodrome for elite
cyclists — this is a multi-faceted facility that
will offer programmes for everyone — it really
is ‘Cycling for All’ and we would hate to lose
this once in a lifetime opportunity,’’ says Mr
Balme.
Should Waikato Regional Council decide
‘‘The fact that seven regions tendered for
New biography recounts life of art pioneer
Fascinating story of Yvonne Rust
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Most Te Awamutu residents will have been through the
War Memorial Park and glanced at the large relief panel that
forms a backdrop to the gardens. Many people will have even
been photographed there over the years.
But few probably know who it was designed by or the
significance of the artist.
The panel was created by former Te Awamutu resident, the
late Yvonne Rust QSM who is the subject of a biography just
released ‘Yvonne Rust - Maverick Spirit’ by Theresa Sjoquist.
Yvonne Rust was an artist, pioneer potter and inspired arts
educator who was born in Whangarei, but lived at Parawera
for several years while her father was principal of the
‘Parawera Native School’.
She attended Te Awamutu District High School (as it was
known then, on the Te Awamutu Primary School site) from
1937 - 1940.
‘‘From Parawera I biked five miles then caught the school
bus to High School for the remaining 10 miles.’’
At school she was a champion runner, swimmer and also
played netball. She enjoyed spending time in Te Awamutu
with friends and playing tennis on the courts opposite the
school house.
‘‘On summer weekends we would take the three mile walk
down clay road to the Owairaka Valley to swim in the Puniu
River or to pick blackberries.’’
The book notes she struggled with academic subjects, but
showed promise with art. Her geography teacher George
Warring encouraged her, she especially enjoyed painting,
sketching and craftwork.
It was during her years at Te Awamutu District High
School that she became adamant she wanted to be an artist.
FAMILY’S COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The Rust family regularly attended Anglican services in
the district, often at St Johns Church in Te Awamutu, where
Yvonne was confirmed.
The book goes on to explain that many Parawera
youngsters had working parents as the depression was just
easing. The Rust family helped out where they could within
the community providing baking and items from their
gardens for local families.
Yvonne’s father worked hard to get better conditions for
children. Free milk was introduced to the school in 1937 when
the roll was up to 87.
In 1939 war broke out and Mr Rust was head of the
homeguard at Parawera. School children under his direction
performed in the Regent Theatre in Te Awamutu for the war
effort.
Yvonne’s mother made costumes for the girls who played
the roles of the missionary children. The Rusts bought a beach
house at Kawhia and often stayed there with family and
friends.
START OF TEACHING CAREER
In 1940 Yvonne moved to Christchurch to undertake a
Diploma in Fine Arts at Canterbury University’s School of
Art.
She took up a teaching job in Palmerston North in 1945, but
during school holidays she often returned to Parawera or
stayed at Kawhia.
After a refresher course for art teachers in 1949 she
‘discovered’ pottery and was hooked.
She became art mistress at Christchurch Girls High
School, where interestingly two of her pupils were Juliet
Hulme and Pauline Parker who were convicted of killing
Parker’s mother in 1954.
MEMORIAL PARK RELIEF PANEL
In 1954 Yvonne also won the contract for the design and
creation of a clay model relief panel (pictured below) for the
Te Awamutu and Districts War Memorial Park.
The quote was for £84 but Yvonne offered a 50% discount as
her personal contribution to the monument.
Fascinating story
of Yvonne Rust
From page 9.
The panel represents ‘the merger of Maori and
Pakeha ways of life’.
The left side of the panel depicts Maori from the
landing of the Tainui canoe, while the European
history is on the right. They meet in the centre with
an allegorical figure representing the future,
supported either side by a Maori and a Pakeha.
Yvonne’s parents eventually retired to Kawhia,
but as their health deteriorated they shifted to
Christchurch where Yvonne accepted a position
with an Adult Education Extension programme.
She was to the forefront of the pottery movement
during the 1950’s in Christchurch, then moved to
Greymouth in the 1960’s where she continued to
create pottery and taught at Greymouth High
School.
She was the subject of a TVNZ documentary in
1970 which promoted her desire to utilise and
develop New Zealand raw materials.
She moved north in 1971, back to Whangarei,
and that year she also received a QE II Arts Council
Fellowship for services to pottery.
She ran summer pottery schools in Parua Bay,
staged various exhibitions and visitors streamed to
her home at Tahunatapu Point to see her working.
THE QUARRY ARTS CENTRE
She also developed ‘The Quarry’ a nursery for
art and craft skills with resident artists, a retail
outlet, art gallery wood fired kiln and workshops.
The Quarry is still a hub for the arts in the north.
Her work was sold all over the country,
including a craft shop in Te Awamutu.
In later life she painted more, although pottery
was still her great love.
In 1999 she moved back to the West Coast,
settling at Runanga where the Yvonne Rust West
Coast Arts Trust was formed in 2000/01.
Yvonne was a diabetic and her health deteriorated
during 2001.
In 2002 she broke her hip and was taken to
hospital for a partial hip replacement.
But she never full recovered, after contracting
an infection following the operation, and died aged
79 on June 26, 2002.
Yvonne Rust’s work remains as part of her
legacy - around 1400 paintings which are mostly in
private collections and thousands of pieces of
pottery, also mainly in private collections.
But Te Awamutu is lucky enough to have it’s
own special piece of her work that will be a lasting
reminder of the pioneer potter and inspirational
arts educator.
The development of the Bible from
Moses writing the first books to a modern
translator using a laptop was part of a
successful drama staged at the North End
Church recently.
Drama groups from the Anglican,
Assembly of God, Bible Chapel, Catholic,
Methodist, North End and Presbyterian
churches performed ten scenes.
Each was produced by Anna McClunie
from the Bible Chapel and mixed humour
with spiritual messages.
Around 150 people came from as far
away as Thames and Matamata to support
the Bible Society fundraising production.
Local organisers were delighted to
receive an offering of over $2,200.
The money will be used to buy 300
suitable modern English bibles for year 5-6
students to use during Bible in Schools
lessons in state primary schools, including
some in Te Awamutu.
This year marks 400 years since the
King James version of the Bible, the most
widely printed book in the world, was first
printed in 1611.
Original Bibles (1611 KJV) are now very
rare and worth in excess of $50,000.
The Te Awamutu Bible Society Action
Group hopes to stage a competition to see
who has the oldest bible in Te Awamutu.
Our history...
What did we do before the days of electric blankets and
rubber hot water bottles? The problem of cold feet
has long been seen as detrimental to good health. In
the late 19th and early 20th century remedies for cold feet
were often discussed in local newspapers of the day. Usually
the suggested aim was to improve circulation to the feet one
way or another. One article suggested ‘‘Twice a day stand on
one foot on a stool and swing the other foot five minutes, then
reverse. Then for two minutes walk on tiptoe around the
room.’’
For those who could afford it there were ceramic foot
warmers which were filled with boiling water and placed in the
bed or were used when travelling on trains. For those who
could not afford a foot warmer or bed warmer, a brick was
heated on the stove. Examples of some early foot warming
artefacts, as well as excerpts from some amusing newspaper
columns can be seen on display at the Museum currently.
Clarke Waikato bodybuilding champ
Former Miss Rosetown beauty still cutting fabulous figure
BY COLIN THORSEN
Kiriana Clarke is still
wowing the judges on-stage
17 years after being crowned
Miss Rosetown.
The Te Awamutu
37-year-old won the senior
figure 35-plus title at the
NABBA Waikato Bodybuilding
Championships,
staged at the Clarence Street
Theatre, Hamilton.
‘‘Kiriana has great stage
presence, very calm but confident,’’
NABBA Waikato
area rep, Teresa Edwards
told the Courier.
‘‘What I think gave her
the edge over the other girls,
is that she has a wonderful
shape — bodybuilding is a
form of art, and competitors
with nice lines and angles
like Kiriana always shine
out in a line up.’’
Edwards says Clarke’s
muscle tone and leanness
was similar from upper
body to lower body.
‘‘No doubt when she
steps on stage at nationals
she will have improved
somewhat more.
‘‘In the 35-plus class,
Kiriana would be my first
pick for nationals. I look
forward to seeing her on
stage again.’’
Clarke is a mother of
three, Paetyn (10), Anika (8)
and Nixon (3).
She joined Bruce’s Fitness
Centre when her third
child was eight weeks old to
lose post baby body fat.
Once she had achieved
the objective, her goal the
following year was to compete.
In October 2010 she
debut.
‘‘I’ve always had a
passion for the whole gym
scene, starting back when I
instructed at Te Awamutu
Health & Fitness Centre and
being a personal trainer at
Te Awamutu Events
Centre.’’
Clarke had instant success
as a competitor, winning
the senior body fitness
over-35 title, placing second
in novice tall body fitness,
and third in novice tall body
figure.
Heartened by her success
at regional level, Clarke
entered two divisions at the
2010 nationals in Auckland,
placing second in both the
senior body fitness over-35
and novice tall body fitness.
The NABBA Waikato
Bodybuilding senior figure
over- 35 champion is hoping
to go one better when
contesting this event at the
2011 NABBA nationals in
Auckland in October.
In order to keep in shape,
Clarke plans to compete at
the NABBA Bay of Plenty
regional championships in
Whakatane next month, followed
by the NZIFBB Waikato
championships in
Hamilton early October.
Competitors are judged
over three rounds.
First round ‘symmetry’
has them on stage in high
heels in a straight line
facing the judges.
They execute a series of
quarter turns to the right,
allowing the judges to view
and compare them from
front, left side, back and
right side.
The judges are looking
for femininity, poise, tight
lines, skin tone, and smiles.
Clarke says she practiced
in the mirror to ensure she
felt and looked confident
when on-stage.
In round two ‘compulsory’
competitors pose,
highlighting front double
biceps, followed by chest
pose/triceps, back double
biceps, abdominal and
thigh.
The third round
comprises a night show
where each competitor
performs a 60 second
individual routine.
Clarke says she is grateful
to her sponsors Brett and
Sue Cullen, and her family
for their ongoing support.
His coach Rod Jeffries has
high hopes for the 15-year-old,
extraordinary record in his fledgling
Otto stable has
nose in front
RICHARD OTTO with one of his stable stars Ourforeignminister.
BY PHILLIP QUAY
Richard and Chris Otto look set to
become Te Awamutu’s leading horse
trainers for the 2010/11 season.
The Ottos currently have 23 wins
to their credit for the season which
concludes on Sunday.
The stable’s most recent winner
was Whoshe in the Listed Great
Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie
early June.
In addition, the Ottos have had 20
seconds and 27 third placegetters to
date.
The last northern race meeting is
at Te Rapa on Saturday.
Chances of the Ottos extending
their tally rest with Whoshe in the
Ryder Stakes at Otaki on Friday and
Ourforeignminister at Taumarunui
meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday.
Both are good chances — Whoshe
is fresh back starting a new campaign,
while Ourforeignminister ran
second in Te Awamutu Cup last start
and will be dropping back a grade.
Firehawks primed
for league playoffs
Any Te Awamutu Sports
Firehawks complacency has been
well and truly extinguished going
into Waikato rugby league’s premier
reserve ‘top five’ playoffs.
The top qualifying Firehawks
needed one of their ‘get out of jail’
cards to pip bottom-of-the-table
Kiokio Hunters 34-32 at Maihihi.
Kiokio led 18-14 at halftime and
were still on equal terms at 32-all
with two minutes to play — only to
concede a penalty out in front of the
posts for Richard Ball to convert into
match-winning points.
Try scorers for the Firehawks
were Charles Campbell, Luke
Hansen, Orsana Flavell, Clint
Staples, Young
four-ball champs
Brenda Staples and Sue Young combined
outstandingly to win the women’s four-ball bestball
competition at Pirongia Golf Club.
The champion pairing won a hotly contested
final 3/2 over the runners-up Meredith Pengelly
and Shirley Kewish.
Staples and Young enjoyed further success,
taking out the scramble, on rabbits, with 76
stableford, from K. Sanders and C. Ward on 73, and
E. Blackwood and P. MacIntyre 70.
The nine hole scramble went to A. Bailey and J.
Dunn with 34 stableford, from D. Riddell and E.
Harper on 27.
Bailey won the longest putt competition, while
the only two was scored by the team of S. Grey and
C. Ward.
TC260711CT05
Graeme and Mark Sanders’ stable
has saddled up 21 winners — the
second highest total number of wins
for a Te Awamutu stable.
The Sanders’ biggest win of the
season came when classy three-yearold
filly Smoulder won the Group 2
Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic
(1600m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.
There is little between the two
leading Te Awamutu stables in terms
of prize money won by their horses.
The Otto’s stable representatives
have earned $407,790, while the
Sanders’ stable runners have
amassed $405,790 in stakes.
There is a chance the Sanders may
still get up and pip the Ottos. They
will have three or four starters at
Taumarunui in Innocent Lady,
Already Perfect and Te Toro Lass,
with Romario another possible
starter.
The third highest total was posted
by the Robert Priscott/Clayton
Chipperfield stable with 15 wins and
almost $240,000 in stakes.
Mauriohooho, Taawhirltengakau
Howell and Mansell Baker. Four of
the six tries were converted by Ball.
Malcolm Howell was named
player of the day.
The Firehawks finished the
second round with a 12 win, two loss
record. As top qualifiers, they have
two lives in the playoffs and received
the bye first up.
They meet Rangariri at Resthills
Park, Hamilton, 1.30pm kickoff, on
Saturday.
Team spokesperson, Marj Heke-
Waaka is anticipating a big local
contingent of supporters will travel
north for the match in supports of the
Firehawks.
TA Gwynne Shield runners-up
Eight play way into Waikato Roller Mills trials
BY COLIN THORSEN AND
CATHY ASPLIN
Te Awamutu’s
Gwynne Shield rugby
team did themselves
proud making the
Gwynne Shield rugby
final for the second consecutive
year.
Despite being beaten
22-7 by Hamilton Wasps
in Sunday’s finale to the
week-long tournament
in Cambridge, Te Awamutu
took out two team
trophies, along with one
individual award.
Captain Conner
Loomans accepted two
trophies on his team’s
behalf — the Brian
Spraggon Memorial
Shield, awarded to the
runner-up team, as well
as the Rowan/Baird
Trophy for the highest
placed country team.
Blindside flanker
Zekyl Aperehama was
recipient of the Ross
Southcombe Cup for
country player of the
tournament, chosen by
the Waikato Roller Mills
selectors.
Further success went
Waipa’s way with Cambridge
taking out the
Don Le Prou Trophy for
team sportsmanship.
It is interesting to
note that eight Te Awamutu
team members
played their way into
Waikato Roller Mills
trials with an outstanding
tournament —
Tairoa Crean, Te Hau
Mitchell, Zekyl
Aperehama, Josh
Shield last year.
Forty-four boys will
trial in town v country
teams over the next
three consecutive
Sundays at Cambridge
to select the Waikato
team to contest the
Roller Mills tournament
in Thames from October
9-15.
Te Awamutu deservedly
made the final, topping
Pool A and
thrashing Morrinsville,
the Pool A runners-up,
36-0 in the semi-final.
Tries went to Tyler-
Joel Makaea (2), Conner
Loomans (2), Josh Cof-
fin and Tiroa Crean,
with Josh Moorby
adding three
conversions.
After an outstanding
semi-final, the Chris
Gibson/John Moorby
co-coached Te Awamutu
side met their nemesis
— the well-drilled Hamilton
Wasps in the final
— a side they had lost
29-nil to in one of their
earlier crossover games.
Team manager, Nigel
Atkinson says the game
plan was to shut down
the Wasps’ No. 6 and No.
8, who were excellent
runners with the ball.
After a stirring haka,
led by Zekyl
Aperehama, Te Awamutu
got into their
work immediately by
putting the Wasps onto
the back foot with a try
to player of the day
Aperehama, converted
by Moorby, to lead 7-0.
Te Awamutu could
do no wrong with first
five Moorby kicking
into the corners, keeping
the opposition
firmly entrenched in
their own half.
It took the Wasps
until five minutes
before halftime to open
their account with an
unconverted try, and Te
Awamutu went to the
break leading 7-5.
Playing into the wind
in the second spell, Te
Awamutu showed
admirable discipline
and composure to stick
to their plan of playing
The pressure told
when the Wasps
knocked on five metres
from their line, gifting
Te Awamutu an attacking
scrum. A fumble by
the opposition halfback
saw Aperehama pounce
on the ball, only to fall
just short of the try line.
The game swung in
the balance as play went
from one end of the field
to the other.
The Wasps mounted
a backline attack, countered
by centre Keegan
Atkinson intercepting a
pass and running 50
metres only to be cut
down by the covering
defence.
The Wasps appeared
a trifle lucky when the
referee and touch judges
knock ons in a backline
Te Awamutu fought
hard to get back into the
game but, try as they
In a word: EXTRAORDINARY.
It’s quite wonderful. A fascinating
and beautiful family film that
reveals the story of two families,
a lion pride and a cheetah mom
trying to raise and protect her
incredibly adorable cubs. Kids will
love ‘African Cats’, which is full of
“aw” moments. Their parents will
appreciate this true-life depiction
of the circle of life. This is a film
you would eagerly watch again.
