Fourth Grade PHASE OF THE WRITING PROCESS TEACHING POINTS COLLECTING CHOOSING DEVELOPING DRAFTING REVISING EDITING PUBLISHING AND CELEBRATING Suggested approaches are listed within these lessons. RA=Read Aloud, SR=Shared Reading, ML=Mini lesson, SW=Shared Writing, MW=Modeled Writing, and OS=Oral Storytelling. Teaching points where a mini lesson is not suggested are not expected to be mastered independently at this grade level. Finally, all immersion decisions are made by the teacher based on the needs of the students. 1. Assess students using writing narrative prompt. HW-Decorate your writer’s notebook with artifacts from your life. 2. Rehearse expectations for mini-lesson (Decorate/share notebook). Identify qualities and define purpose for personal narratives by investigating mentor text. 3. Rehearse expectations for independent writing/share (Create a heart map). Generate by using ideas from notebook cover. 4. Rehearse expectations for partner work. Generate personal narrative entries by thinking of a person, place, or thing and listing moments. ML ML ML HW – Choose another person, place or thing from your lists to write an entry off of. 5. Set goals for stamina by writing fast for a given time period (10 minutes) and measuring productivity. (Choose another idea from any previous strategy.) ML 6. Generate personal narrative entries by thinking of turning points (best times, worst times, lessons learned, or favorites) or strong feelings and moments. Revising to blend two lessons ML 7. Raise the quality of personal narratives by creating a timeline to zoom in and focus on a small moment. ML 8. Develop stories by helping the readers see, feel, hear, and experience their stories. Writers include the true, exact details from the movie they have in their heads. ML 9. Writers learn their role in a writing conference by observing a fishbowl writing conference, identifying roles and expectations then rehearsing with a partner.
