submissions received on the
2011/12 Draft Annual Plan to
Friday). Most of the
submissions have been in
favour of the project.
Submissions have also been
received around the proposed
Cambridge swimming pool and
Te Awamutu museum, despite
neither project being featured
in the proposed work plan for
the coming year.
Former resident caught
up in Japan earthquake
The cherry blossoms are blooming
in Japan, and former Te Awamutu
resident Louise George
Kittaka says these symbols of
spring and new life are especially
poignant this year.
Mrs Kittaka, who grew up in Te
Awamutu and did her schooling at
Waikeria Primary, Te Awamutu
Intermediate and Te Awamutu College,
lives in Tokyo with her Japanese
husband Yoshi and their two
school age daughters.
She was riding her bicycle home
from her local station in West
Tokyo on the afternoon of Friday,
March 11.
‘‘As I turned into our street, I
saw the owner of the barber’s shop
on the corner and heard him call
something about ‘earthquake’.
‘‘Thinking he was asking how
my family was after the recent
Christchurch quake, I replied,
‘Thanks, they’re all fine!’.
‘‘He looked at me oddly and
called out again, ‘It’s an earthquake!’
That’s when I felt it. The
ground seemed to be rolling and
instinctively I got off my bike and
crouched down in the street.
‘‘Living in Japan, you get used to
minor tremors now and again, but
this was far from minor.
Everyone talks vaguely of the
‘big one’ which is supposed to hit
Tokyo some day and I really
thought, ‘This is it!’
‘‘I’d just come back from a
meeting for work downtown. My
older daughter, Reina, who
commutes an hour by train and bus
to her middle school, had texted me
to say she had arrived home, too.
Since it was exam week, the kids
didn’t have school in the after noon.
‘‘After the quake subsided, I
rushed back to our house. One of
our neighbours was already going
door to door, asking if everyone was
OK. I came home to find my 13-yearold
daughter still crouching under
the table, clutching one of our cats.
She was upset but unhurt.
‘‘I tried to call the local primary
school where my 10-year-old Marin
goes, but the phones were all out of
action. Luckily, the Internet was
still working and I made contact
with a friend who lives near the
school. She said she could see the
kids gathered in the playground
with their teachers. A friend’s
mother dropped my daughter home
LOUISE GEORGE KITTAKA with husband Yoshi and their children, Tsuyoshi, Reina and Marin.
about 30 minutes later.’’
Mrs Kittaka logged on to
Facebook and it soon became apparent
that the centre of the quake was
in the Tohoku area, several hours
north of Tokyo.
The initial reports of quake
damage were followed by the
horrifying news of the tsunami
waves wiping out entire coastal
communities.
‘‘I emailed my 16-year-old son
Tsuyoshi, going to high school in
New Zealand, and my parents, Ken
and Maureen George, in Te Awamutu
to tell them we were safe.
‘‘I couldn’t contact my husband,
who lives away from home during
the week for his job. I was
extremely worried as he was much
closer to the centre, and so it was
such a relief when he managed to
call us that evening to say he was
safe. The highways shut down and
it took him 12 hours to drive back to
Tokyo, finally arriving at 5 a.m.
Trains all over the city stopped
running, meaning millions of
people were forced to walk home or
stay overnight at the office.
‘‘One of my friends walked for
six hours to get back from work to
her young children. I was so thankful
my older daughter was home
early that day from school, or else
she would have been stuck at
school.
‘‘The next few weeks were con
fusing and stressful, with worsening
news of the death toll and the
added threat of radiation from the
Fukushima nuclear reactor. With
the school spring break coming up,
lots of my foreign friends decided to
go back to their home countries for
a break.’’
The government implemented
rolling blackouts to save power, and
for a while petrol was rationed,
with cars lining up for hours just to
get 20 litres.
‘‘Aftershocks continued for the
first few weeks, leaving the kids
fearful of going to sleep for a while.
Now, however, the mood in
Tokyo has lightened somewhat.
THIS WEEKS SPECIAL
Panic buying has subsided and
food and petrol supplies are back to
normal, although scheduled
blackouts continue. For the time
being, the nuclear reactor situation
is not affecting Tokyo. Water in our
area is safe and no special measures
are called for. The efforts in Tohoku
have turned from rescue to recovery,
as thousands are still living in
school gyms, community centers
and other evacuation zones.
‘‘This week I packed up some
toys and clothes my girls had
outgrown, along with some new
kids underwear, socks and basic
necessities like toothpaste and
soap. I sent them off to an Australian
fiend in Tohoku who is help ing
to co-ordinate relief efforts in her
area.
‘‘As I packed the boxes, I
reflected on how much I have to be
grateful for. Our family is safe, with
a roof over our heads, a fridge full of
food and the freedom to go about
our daily lives — something we will
never take for granted!’’
Waipa still struggling with priorities
At the March 29 Council
meeting, discussion took place
on district governance and
proposed fees and charges.
There may be a slight
increase on some fees. It is
only fair that the user pays,
otherwise those costs would
filter through to general rates.
In saying that, Council
must operate efficiently to
control and manage those
charges.
Several good recommendations
were put forward by the
Te Awamutu Community
Board — well done. To develop
a cycle route to Kihikihi from
Te Awamutu, improve signage
to enhance motorist awareness
of cyclists at the Cambridge
Road roundabout and
to generally tidy up Centennial
park adjacent to the
skateboard area.
A cycleway from Te Awamutu
to Kihikihi would be a
wonderful idea.
It has been raised before in
Council.
Walkers, runners, cyclists,
mobile scooters would all use
use it with safety as well.
Kihikihi development would
be greatly enhanced.
I made a statement at the
meeting: cycleway to Kihikihi
— no money available; Cen-
tennial park upgrade - no
money available; Te Rore
water supply maintenance —
no money available; Picquet
Hill subdivision — no water,
no money; proposed
velodrome at $3.5 Million — no
problem; Cambridge pool project,
$10 Million of ratepayers
money including asset sales —
no problem.
We seem reluctant to learn.
The velodrome decision
comes up soon after
submissions close in April.
There are mixed opinions on
this project.
The Cambridge swimming
pool. This project was passed
✓ WE QUOTE ✓ WE INSTALL
at a 2007 Council meting and is
still on the books. It can only
proceed if just under $5
Million is publicly raised.
When a professional firm
was employed at a great cost,
only around $50,000 was forthcoming.
Now the Cambridge
councillors want to try again
for public contributions.
In reality Waipa will still
have to borrow millions of
dollars, rates will increase
another 2% to 3% and it will
cost over $1 Million a year to
run — why at this point in
time would we even contemplate
it.
Ngaroma centenary in January 2012
On January 28-29, 2012
(Anniversary weekend), The
District of Ngaroma will celebrate
its centenary —
marking 100 years since the
first settlers arrived.
One of the early settlers
was Sarah Mankelow and several
of her descendants still
reside in the district to this
day.
Balloon bus tops
A big thanks to the organisers of
the free bus to the Balloons over
It was awesome and I was able to
take some great photos.
I hope Go Bus do other free busses
for other events so that the people of
Te Awamutu can see these events
too.
Well done Go Bus.
PATSY VERMUNT
From stories told to me by
my own grandmother (Sarah’s
daughter), times were very
hard upon there arrival with
thick bush and heavy scrub
giving way to unfertile
patches of tussock land was
broken in by hand and horse.
A timber mill flourished as
did a small township and
school but these eventually
gave way to progress and
closed in the mid 70s.
Dry stock and dairy farming
are now the main activity
in what could only be
described as lush and fertile
farmland.
A very comprehensive
book compiled by Chrissie
Mankelow titled ‘Memories of
Ngaroma 100 years’ is to be
published for anyone interested
in local history.
A copy of this book and
registration for the weekend
can be sought by visiting
www.ngaromacentenary.co.nz
We look forward to catching
Massive debt the real nonsense
In reply to Dean Taylor’s
letter in response to my
letter in the Courier on
March 31:
My suggestion of selling
artefacts to pay for the
museum ‘‘is a nonsense’’ he
states.
Loading up the ratepayer
with a $15 Million plus debt
— that is super nonsense.
You say the Museum has
a policy of not selling donated
artefacts. I would
change that policy, it’s not
set in stone.
I would have a worldwide
auction using Sotheby’s of
London and sell the lot.
I would get the $40 Million
as it has been valued at in the
Courier and give it to the
Waipa District Council.
The Council would then
be debt free, our rates would
drop by 25%.
Let’s take a poll on this.
You artefact collectors want
any bits, go and bid up using
your own money, not ratepayers’
money.
Castelton Park home
to Park Road Sports
Serving TA Marist, BMX and Soccer
TC120411GJ01
CASTLETON PARK has been a combined community effort. Participants have included, from left:
adjoining landowner Ken Castleton, president of Park Road Sports, Simon Brdanovic and Waipa
District Council parks and heritage manager, Max Ward.
Huge mounds of earth to form
the new Te Awamutu BMX Club
track are a tangible sign something
is happening on Park
Road, but the behind the scenes
work to form Park Road Sports
has been going on for several
years.
Park Road Sports was incorporated
in June 2008 and was
formed for the specific purpose
of serving the needs of the
community and, in particular,
Te Awamutu Soccer, Te Awamutu
Marist and Te Awamutu
BMX.
Another tangible sign times
are changing at the former Te
Awamutu Marist grounds has
been the appearance of a new
sign and a new name —
Castleton Park — recognising
the contribution made to the
new facility by adjoining landowner
Ken Castleton.
‘‘Available land at Te Awamutu
Marist which, with the
adjoining property owned by Mr
Castleton also potentially available
for immediate acquisition,
has resulted in the creation of a
sports park which is an excellent
community facility accessible
by, and for the benefit of, the
general public,’’ says Park Road
Sports president, Simon
Brdanovic.
Mr Castleton, mindful of the
need to provide opportunities for
7942256AF
local sporting groups, sold three
hectares of land to the project,
allowing vital expansion of
existing facilities.
Park Road Sports was
instigated because of the common
need of the three sporting
groups for a suitable ‘home’ and
certainty about the future.
‘‘BMX has become one of Te
Awamutu’s most successful
sports with its members
obtaining representative honours,’’
Mr Brdanovic says.
‘‘By becoming involved with
Park Road Sports, BMX is also
now able to look to build and
maintain its own international
standard BMX Track, which will
enable it to host national, and
potentially international,
tournaments.
‘‘Te Awamutu Soccer Club
has one of the largest junior
memberships of any club in
town, but its growth has been
hindered by the disparate and
limited facilities available to it.
‘‘Through its involvement in
Park Road Sports it has the
opportunity to have a central
location for its sports grounds
and ample clubrooms.
‘‘Te Awamutu Marist was one
of the few clubs in Te Awamutu
to own its own land. Now that it
has sold the land to Waipa
District Council, and donated its
building to Park Road Sports,
these clubs are able to work
together to promote and develop
facilities and resources for their
combined membership.’’
The clubs formed a working
group several years ago to
explore the possibility of working
collectively for the development
of various sporting codes
for the benefit of the significant
junior numbers which each club
possesses.
Council has taken a key role
in seeking to assist the clubs to
achieve their goals and at the
same time, assure the future of
this valuable green space inside
the Te Awamutu town boundary.
The outcome has been that Te
Awamutu Marist has sold its
land to the Waipa District Council
on the basis of a lease back to
Park Road Sports Incorporated
for the benefit of the three clubs
who are members.
Te Awamutu Soccer has junior
numbers of approximately
400, BMX has 60 and Te Awamutu
Marist has 70 juniors.
All members of these individual
clubs are members of Park
Road Sports Incorporated and
have the ability to use the former
Te Awamutu Marist land at Park
Road, Te Awamutu, along with
the building housing the
clubrooms, generously donated
by Te Awamutu Marist to Park
Road Sports.
‘‘If we wanted a bath
we had to boil the copper.
Our toilet was down
the hill.’’
Because of the
isolated, hilly countryside
Mr Bain had to
sledge timber in to build
the houses.
The couple finally
moved to ‘civilisation’
when they shifted to
Hamilton at the end of
1951.
They had earlier purchased
a section in Hillcrest
and Mr Bain built
their own small, onebedroom
home.
As the children
arrived the house was
During those years
Mr Bain built group
houses, state houses and
private houses.
His final job was
working on the
Trevellyn retirement
village before the Bain
family shifted to Mystery
Creek.
Their fifth child was
born there and the
couple are still living
there today.
They initially
brought 100 acres
(across the road from
where the Mystery
Creek Events Centre is
today) to operate a dairy
farm.
At the time there
were only six houses on
the metal road.
Mr Bain admits his
wife took to the farming
better than him
‘‘She was a farmer’s
daughter and got on better
with the cows than I
did.’’
In 1973 they sold part
of the farm and over the
years other portions
have been sold as the
area has built up.
Mr and Mrs Bain
have watched the Mystery
Creek site develop
and Fieldays grow into a
huge event.
They have hosted
numerous people from
around New Zealand
Te Awamutu Bridge Club marks
50th Jubilee in fitting style
Te Awamutu Bridge Club
rooms took on a different look
recently when the club celebrated
its 50th Jubilee.
Magnificent floral
arrangements were to be seen
along with set tables beautifully
decorated and the ceiling
festooned with balloons.
The proceedings
commenced with a time of
drinks and nibbles and catching
up with those former
friends not seen for some time.
Club president Brian Sloan
then welcomed the 56 members
and past members along
with guests Waipa Mayor
Alan Livingston and president
of the Cambridge Bridge Club,
Alyson Clay.
Master of Ceremonies
Bruce Owen read apologies
from Karen Martaletti,
chairperson of Waikato/Bays
area and Robyn Symonds,
president of the Waitomo
Bridge Club and from current
and past members.
The MC then kept those
present entertained with some
interesting stories on how the
game of bridge first began.
Luncheon was then served
and all sat down to find gold
serviettes and a gold monogrammed
ballpoint pen
threaded through beautifully
hand made serviette rings.
Mayor Alan Livingston
then spoke and agreed, having
been told of the number in the
club who were over 90 years
old and still playing a mean
game of bridge, that bridge
was indeed a game to keep the
faculties alert and the grey
In response, founding member
Mrs McQueen’s rendition
Celia Lashlie for Otorohanga
If adolescent boys could tell
their mothers one thing, what
would it be? And tell their
fathers?
International best selling
author, social justice advocate,
researcher and storyteller, Celia
Lashlie will answer these
questions when she speaks at a
number of events planned for
Otorohanga on Thursday.
She is a highly regarded
speaker and her talks give parents
plenty of food for thought
and hints about how to work
with their children.
Following Otorohanga’s successful
inaugural Mayoral
Fathers Breakfast in 2009, a biyearly
event was planned. This
year Otorohanga was fortunate
to secure Celia Lashlie as guest
speaker not just at the Father and
Son Breakfast, but for two other
parents events and three events
at the Otorohanga College.
The Mayoral Father and Son
Breakfast will take place from
7am. Mayor Dale Williams
invites fathers and sons to join
him for a cooked breakfast at
Otorohanga Club (no door sales).
This is a great opportunity to
take along your son (9-plus years)
to hear Celia Lashlie’s wit and
wisdom. Dads on their own are
also welcome. Local fathers
Andrew Giltrap, Clayton
Koroheke and Steve Wilshier
will also briefly share their
experience of being a Dad.
At 10am on Thursday there
will be a women’s morning tea at
the Harvest Centre, Tuhoro St,
Otorohanga (crèche available)
and at 7pm a parents evening at
the same venue. For event ticket
Cheylin Leat steps out of her
comfort zone into new life
When the Alpha Dinner was
hosted at Te Awamutu Bible
Chapel last year, Cheylin Leat
sat in her car in the carpark too
nervous to get out.
‘‘I was absolutely scared, so
far out of my comfort zone, and
wondering what I was doing
there.
‘‘Would they know I wasn’t a
Christian, and at that point
didn’t hold a particularly high
opinion of them? Would they
know I was involved with New
Age practices?
‘‘Next thing I knew, I was
going in the door. To this day I
have no memory of getting out
of the car! I was made to feel
very welcome, I met some
lovely people and the meal was
wonderful too.
‘‘Then the DVD started. It
was an experience I will not
forget. The presenter, Nicky
Gumble, seemed to be looking
right inside of me, seeing the
dark, gaping hole that never
seemed to fill. Seeing the pain,
doubt and ugliness of my life. I
was shocked he knew how I was
feeling. And he was telling me
that Jesus, God and the Holy
Spirit were the way to being
whole.’’
Mrs Leat’s curiosity was
aroused and she decided to go
back and attend the course.
‘‘The other thing that surprised
me was there was no
pressure to do so from the
group running Alpha. It was
made clear on the first night
that if we didn’t want to continue,
then that was OK. But if
we wanted to come back, we
would be welcome. And as I
certainly was.
‘‘Each week I attended, I was
met with smiles and fellowship.
CHRISTIAN COUPLE: Whitey and Cheylin Leat of Ohaupo.
I looked forward to each
Sunday — the meal, the company,
the DVD with a new topic
each week and discussion afterwards.
‘‘Midway through the
course, there was a weekend
away. It was great fun and a
real highlight. I decided to give
me heart to the Lord that
weekend, and became a Christian.
I then elected to start
attending church. My husband
and son decided to come along
as well after a week or two, to
see why I was changing.
‘‘Thanks to that start at
Alpha, my husband has also
become a Christian, and last
year saw us baptised and renew
our marriage vows as Christians.’’
The Leats moved to the
Waikato nine years ago from
Auckland.
‘‘There has always been no
doubt in our minds God existed,
and that he held a place in our
lives. On moving to the Waikato,
we spent a number of
FINAL FINAL NOTICE NOTICE
years hiding away from people
as I had depression and suffered
a breakdown before we
left Auckland,’’ Mrs Leat says.
‘‘I had no desire to mix with
people and meeting strangers
was just too much outside my
comfort zone. At the start of
2009, our young son started
asking us some deep and meaningful
questions about God.
Some, we couldn’t answer. At
the same time, I had started
questioning my faith in God.
‘‘I had been watching the
changes in my oldest son, Fonz
in Auckland — he had become a
Christian a few years earlier,
and I was amazed and perplexed
with the changes in him.
Weren’t we both investing our
faith in the same God? Why was
what he had so much better
than what we appeared to? Due
to our religious differences, we
didn’t really see eye to eye, and
one day he said to me, “If you
get the chance to do an Alpha
Course, it might answer your
questions”.
‘‘Lo and behold, the next
week, an article was in the
Courier about an upcoming
Alpha Course at Te Awamutu
Bible Chapel. Before I knew it, I
had rung and put my name
down for the course. At this
point, my husband Whitey had
no interest in coming with me,
but supported my decision to
go.’’
Mrs Leat says the Alpha
course has been the catalyst for
a whole new life in their home.
‘‘At times the personal
growth is testing and the trials
of life just as difficult. The
difference is, we have faith in
the Lord to guide us, keep us
safe and give us direction. He is
our rock and refuge.
‘‘I would recommend the
Alpha Course to anyone, irrespective
of their beliefs,
backgrounds or length of time
as a Christian – practicing or
not. Alpha provides a pressure
free, friendly environment to
learn more about Jesus, God
and the Holy Spirit.
‘‘The Alpha Course also
shows the relevance of God in
our world today and how his
word, The Bible, is timeless and
really is the living word. There
is the opportunity to change
your life, if you want to. Don’t
be afraid – give it a go.’’
Te Awamutu Bible Chapel
will be hosting a banquet dinner
on April 17 to kick off this
year’s Alpha Course.
Support group on a
fundraising mission
In October last year we featured the story of
breast cancer sufferer Glenda Rhodes and her
plan to form a Te Awamutu support group.
The response was terrific, not just from
women who had
been, or were being,
treated for breast
cancer — but also
from other groups
and the businesses
in the community.
Women are still
making enquiries
about the Te Awamutu
Breast Cancer
Support Group,
which recently grew
in size from eight to
10 members.
Mrs Rhodes says
this year the group
decided to do something
to help at Waikato Hospital, and with
input from staff, are fundraising for a new coffee
machine for the Chemotherapy Unit.
The unit is used by cancer patients of all
ages, and the current machine is on its last legs,
so a new machine will be appreciated by a good
number of patients.
Mrs Rhodes says Cerebos have given a $1000
discount on the price of their machine that
makes tea, coffee and hot chocolate at the push
of a button, so they are fundraising $3000.
To date they have over $2300 from raffles,
cake stalls and car boot sales, and this Sunday
have a Family Fun Walk around Lake Ngaroto
planned to push them towards their goal.
The walk starts at 10am and entry is by gold
coin.
The group meets monthly — with the next
meeting on Thursday at 10.30am.
Meetings are a way of sharing stories,
talking through issues and experiences and
planning projects to help others and themselves.
Valray Country Music Promotions is assisting
with a major country music concert in June,
with funds benefiting support group members
in their times of need.
World Cup joy for Johnstone at Kihikihi
Designer John Nicholson’s course major drawcard for riders
Clarke Johnstone delivered a clear showjumping
round under intense pressure to win
the first FEI World Cup Event at Kihikihi.
Course-designer Gerrit Beker had set a
tough technical challenge for the final phase,
leaving no room for complacency despite
Johnstone going into the ring with a rail in
hand.
Johnstone looked calm and confident
aboard his 12-year-old bay gelding Orient
Express and the combination produced a
polished round to finish the competition on
their dressage score of 45.7 penalties.
Australian Chris Burton and the impressive
Holstein Park Leilani dropped a rail with
one time penalty to finish on a final score of
50.9 penalties in second place.
Johnstone produced another clear round
with one time penalty on his younger horse
Incognito to also take third place (53.2
penalties).
Australian Shane Rose and Taurus
dropped into fourth place after lowering a rail
to finish the competition on a score of 54.7
penalties.
Originally from the South Island, Johnstone
is a full time rider based in Matangi
near Cambridge. He was a member of the
bronze medal-winning New Zealand eventing
team at the World Equestrian Games in
Kentucky in 2010.
Johnstone and Orient Express led from go
to whoa at Kihikihi after producing a classy
dressage test on day one to finish on a score of
45.7 penalties, barely a whisker ahead of
visiting Australian rider Chris Burton
(Holstein Park Leilani) on 45.9 penalties.
New Zealander Lizzie Brown and Henton
Attorney General finished in third place on
46.8 penalties after the horse made a couple of
uncharacteristic dressage errors which
robbed them of a better score.
Rose and the talented Taurus, and
Cantabrian Alice Montgomery and Gordon
finished fourth equal on a score of 50.7
penalties after both producing quality rhythmic
tests.
The action then switched to the crosscountry
on Saturday when riders tackled
John Nicholson’s testing track — a challenge
relished by top riders from both sides of the
Johnstone and Orient Express produced a
confident, fast clear round ensuring that the
pair remained on their dressage score of 45.7
penalties, just ahead of Burton on Holstein
Park Leilani. Burton also delivered a polished
round on his chestnut mare to finish on his
dressage score of 45.9 penalties, leaving
Johnstone no room for error in the final
show-jumping phase.
Rose shifted into third position (50.7
penalties) with a fast, clear round on Taurus,
after overnight third-placeholders Brown and
Henton Attorney General parted company
mid-course.
Johnstone also guided Incognito clear and
under time to move up two places into fourth
position (52.2 penalties).
Kihikihi first-timer Simon Gordon, who
represented New Zealand twice as a young
rider, showed expertise well beyond his 21
years to bring his two horses home clear and
end the cross-country phase in fifth (Simply
Mitch, 68.9 penalties) and sixth (Fletch.com,
71.1 penalties).
The FEI World Cup Eventing series now
moves to Sydney on May 6-8.
The ruling World Equestrian body, the
FEI, has set stringent standards for this event
and Kihikihi is one of just eight events in the
world to claim World Cup status.
Waipa mayor, Alan Livingston says the
Kihikihi Eventing organising committee has
responded superbly and this group of committed
volunteers has again done a great job in
presenting and running an event of international
standard.
‘‘This is a special event at a special venue
and Waipa District is pleased to be a sponsor
and associated with it.
‘‘While the Kihikihi Domain is centre
stage, we are indeed fortunate to utilise the
adjoining properties of John and Karen
Nicholson for the cross-country, and Paul and
Jenny Kay for the dressage. Combined they
provide an outstanding and multi-use equestrian
facility.
‘‘Thank you for the willing support of all
sponsors. Without whose support such a high
calibre international event could not be
successfully staged.’’
Te Awamutu kickboxers to
compete on world stage
Rick Dobson shows plenty of heart making NZ team
BY COLIN THORSEN
Te Awamutu is
represented by eight
kickboxers in the 28
strong New Zealand
contingent to contest
the world championships
in Wales.
The team fly out on
August 16 and compete
from August 19-21 in
Cardiff.
In one of the more
remarkable comebacks,
Rick Dobson has been
selected to fight for the
veteran’s world title as
well as taking on the
role of team coach/
manager.
It is 14 years since
the former European
champion competed at
this level.
Dobson surprised all
and sundry when winning
the veteran’s title
at the New Zealand
national championships
last year — fulfilling
a goal of his to
compete again after
undergoing open heart
surgery.
‘‘It’s a great honour
for me to be back competing
after all those
years,’’ says Dobson.
‘‘Hopefully, my
team-mates see it as a
big boost to have my
experience alongside them, although we
do a number of experienced coaching staff
with us.’’
Dobson says the team overall is very
strong this year.
‘‘Having people like two times world
junior bronze medallist Sam Rist and
multi times national champion Max Dobson
on the team is great encouragement to
all the new members.’’
The team — also including Phantom
Vickers, Tohu Tamaki, Callum Rist and
Jack Connor — was selected on their
previous year’s performance. All these
competitors have won major titles or
were ranked high up in their divisions
nationally throughout the year.
Each member needs to raise
approximately $4100 to pay for the trip
and are actively looking at ways to gain
the funds.
If there are any businesses in town
willing to support them, they can contact
8071400AA
Rick Dobson on 0272552522 — ‘‘there are a
number of ways we could be supported
and I am appreciative of anything,’’ says
Dobson.
The local kickboxers in the team have
received grants already from both the
Cornerstone Trust and Mbar, along with
financial assistance from Zero Limits
Health & Fitness Club.
‘‘A huge thank you to these organisations
for their support, but we desperately
need to raise more funds.’’
White becomes Waikato
Union board member
Waikato rugby captain
Nathan White has a
‘foot in the door’ as an
administrator when he
decides to hang up his
boots in the future.
The ITM Cup team
skipper has been
appointed to a position
on the board of directors
for the Waikato Rugby
Union in a bid to
enhance the relationship
between the union and
the players.
‘‘There needs to be a
good understanding
between the players and
the provincial union in
the current rugby
environment, with matters
such as financial
performance and governance
of running a provincial
union,’’ says Waikato
Rugby Union’s
CEO, Graham Bowen.
‘‘Likewise, for the
union, to better understand
the needs and welfare
of the modern semiprofessional
rugby
player. This is an
innovative move by
the WRU to achieve
these goals.’’
White says it is a
good opportunity to get
involved with the
organisation to add in
the player’s perspective
and to know where
the organisation is
heading in the future.
Langman centre of attention
bringing up magic milestone
At the time of going to press
last night — Laura Langman
was poised to join an exclusive
club when Waikato/Bay of
Plenty Magic tackled NSW
Swifts in ANZ Championship
netball action in Tauranga.
The captain becomes the
second player in as many
weeks to celebrate 100 matches
for Magic but was hoping for a
different outcome from that
experienced by Irene van Dyk.
The fleet-footed Langman,
24, has gone on to fashion a
stellar career since making
headlines in 2003 when named
in the Magic team for the first
time while still at school. She
has been an automatic selection
ever since.
Inaugural centurion, van
Dyk could not cap her milestone
on a winning note —
when Magic went down by
four goals to the Queensland
Firebirds in a tight top-of-thetable
clash in the latest round
— something Langman was
hoping to achieve.
‘‘It’s a very special moment
and I’m really honoured to
have been able to serve for
such a long time with Magic,’’
she says.
‘‘In such a competitive competition,
loyalty is sometimes
put on the backburner so it’s a
real credit to Magic that the
environment that they’ve
created is exceptional and certainly
one that you’d have to
consider seriously if you
wanted to up and leave.’’
The Swifts clash marks a
crucial phase for Magic during
which they will play three
games in seven days.
In the condensed season, all
Kihikihi Kihikihi
8076996AA
teams experience a doubleheader
round at some stage
and, for Magic, the emphasis
is on staying grounded as the
race for play-off spots intensifies.
‘‘Next week is going to be a
huge week,’’ says Langman.
‘‘The double header
rounds, on top of travel, little
niggles and just the intensity
of the competition really adds
to how hard it is.
‘‘We have spent a lot of time
on recovery and ensuring we
transition properly from the
warm weather in Australia
back to here, where it’s
starting to get a little bit
colder, and making the risk of
illness quite high.’’
Langman says it’s the
attention to detail.
‘‘We want to get off to a
good start and ultimately win
all those three games. But it’s
a matter of taking it game by
game, otherwise you’re at risk
of getting a little bit
overwhelmed by it all.’’
Despite the loss to
Firebirds, their second of the
season, Langman is pleased
with the continued development
of the team and in particular,
the progress of
newcomers Julianna Naoupu
and Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick,
and the renaissance of Jess
Tuki — ‘‘Jess has finally found
a home at wing attack,’’ she
says.
‘‘To be able to progress at
the rate they have in a competition
of this calibre is absolutely
massive — talk about
learning on the job.
‘‘All three have been
phenomenal and have
Two from two
for Firehawks
Te Awamutu Sports Firehawks are unbeaten
after two rounds of the Waikato premier reserve
rugby league competition.
The Firehawks kick started their season with a
38-4 thrashing of Hamilton City Tigers Black at
Albert Park.
Isaac Howell scored a brace of first half tries
and Kaleb Howell one try.
The floodgates opened in the second half with
tries going to Harley Clarke, Renee Ahu, Tana
Muraahi, Isaac Howell (who completed his hattrick
of tries) and Anton Owen. Howell added three
conversions.
Marj Heke-Waaka reports that Rangariri provided
much tougher opposition in the second
round playing at home, taking advantage of
Firehawks’ basic errors.
She says it was the Firehawks’ superior
discipline that saw them come out on top 32-26.
Howell took his try tally to five in two games
with a brace, while Renee Ahu (2), Adam Clerke
and Luke Hansen also dotted down for four
pointers.
Howell converted four of the six tries.
Sports bounce back with win over Marist
Ecolab Te Awamutu
Sports responded in the best
possible fashion to a heavy
loss the previous week —
recording a thrilling 32-28
win over Hamilton Marist.
Peter Bain reports that it
was the first time Sports had
beaten Marist since 2005 and,
with four key players away
with the Waikato Sevens
team in Melrose, victory was
that much sweeter.
Both sides moved the ball
8075848AA
around Albert Park in entertaining
fashion in the warm,
dry conditions.
The lead changed hands
several times, keeping the
crowd on tenterhooks.
Marist opened the scoring
with a penalty try after
Sports failed to find touch
and were caught short of
defenders out wide.
Nathan George soon made
it 7-3 with the first of his two
penalties for the home team.
on, stringing several
Quick ruck ball put lock
Chris Middleton into a gap to
set up wing Henare Raukawa
for a try out wide.
George added the conversion
for a 10-7 lead, only for
Sports to concede a penalty
from the kick off and Marist
equalised.
Sports had the better of
the closing stages of the half,
mounting a number of driving
mauls near the Marist
goal-line.
The constant pressure
paid off when Middleton
again was on hand to pop a
pass to George to score handy
to the posts for a 17-13
halftime lead.
Sports were straight back
into their work after the
break, trapping Marist deep
inside their half.
Marist kept in touch with
a penalty but were soon
called on to defend as Sports
turned up the heat once
more.
Desperate, scrambling
defence prevented them from
scoring on a couple of occasions
before hooker and captain
Simon Kay was the
recipient of a fourth bonus
point try after the Sports’
pack drove to the line from a
lineout five metres out.
Sports held a handy 32-16
lead but Marist charged back
into contention in the last 15
minutes, scoring two late
tries to close to within four
points.
Stand out players were
Simon Kay, who was inspirational
leading his team
around the park, and
Middleton, who dominated
the lineouts and featured in
open play.
George controlled play
well from first five and was
in good goal kicking form.
Chased by federal agents and the
fanatical father of a young woman
Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling
escape plan to return Paul to his ship.
Danny (Adam
burned in a previous
relationship, decides to
avoid commitment by
telling every girl he
hooks up with that he’s
‘married’.
But when he meets a
gorgeous young girl
named Palmer, he
thinks she could be the
one until she finds out
he’s married. So in order
to keep their relationship
going, he tells her
that he and his ‘wife’are
getting a divorce.
When she insists on
meeting his ex, he asks
his assistant Katherine
(Jennifer Aniston) to
pose as his wife.
Katherine takes a call
from one of her children
wants to meet them.
Win tickets to BB King
It is with great
elation that fans of BB
King have greeted the
news that despite the
unfortunate cancellation
of the
GrassRoots Festival
they will still get the
chance to see him at a
special one off performance
at
Auckland’s iconic
Civic Theatre, along
with two of the other
artists originally
scheduled to perform.
And to make it even
better for our readers,
we have a chance for
you to win a double
pass to see this iconic
performer when he
plays Auckland’s Civic
Theatre on Sunday,
April 24 with support
from Ruthie Foster
and Paul Ubana Jones.
BB King is
renowned as a vibrant
and charismatic live
performer and word
around the traps is
that, just like a good
wine, he keeps getting
better with age.
To get an idea of
what to expect check
out his Live At
Montreaux DVD.
This performance
shows him at the top of
his game with a superb
backing band and a
great set list and is a
great precursor to his
forthcoming show.
Classics such as The
Thrill Is Gone, Since I
Met You Baby, Chains
Of Love, Caldonia and
Rock Me Baby — all
brilliantly executed
and that go to show
that BB is still the King
Of The Blues.
Today, at 76, BB
King is as alive as the
music he plays and a
grateful world can’t get
enough of him.
His passion and
flair remain unfaltering
as he continues to
deliver to his adoring
fans.
