Editorial ::
Dear Readers,
The New National Gallery is an architectural
monument which is admired around
the world. Therefore, exhibitions always
represent a particular challenge, as every
work of art is up against the myth of the
building itself and must prove itself.
The artist Rudolf Stingel from South Tyrol
has now designed a new installation
which transforms the character of the
New National Gallery in an impressive
way. The floor area of the great glass hall
has been fitted with a carpet, the decoration
of which dates back to an original Indian
“Agra” carpet from the 19th century.
With curved lines and the rich motif decoration,
Rudolf Stingel invokes an aesthetic
in the architecture which the Bauhaus
School consciously wanted to leave behind.
The cool sobriety of the space is
softly overridden by the delicately designed
and coloured floor covering.
Homely values unusual in the building
have found their way in. Sitting and lying
down are suddenly both possible and
thinkable, where once hard granite floors
prescribed a gentle stroll.
We are extremely pleased that this carpet
installation has met with a great response
and that the exhibition has been extended
by three months. Many thanks to all
the participants and visitors.
Yours
of Great Art
The New National Gallery Berlin is an established institution in
the capital. With Rudolf Stingel, the gallery has been able, this
spring, to engage an internationally renowned artist, one who
has seldom graced Germany until now. This therefore gave
an outstanding opportunity to develop and present a work by
the painter and installation artist. The highlight is a giant wallto-wall
carpet, which forms a strong counterpoint to the strict
purist impression given by gallery building designed
by the former Bauhaus Director, Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe.

of which the company is
rightly very proud.
“ Halbmond is always on the
ball with precision and passion.
To have contributed to
a work of art is something
very special for us.”
with Jens Schuwerk and Evelyn
Dietrich from Halbmond at the private
viewing.
Besides creating space and infinity, the paintings exhibited in the basement also show traces of history. When reproducing the nature
photographs, Rudolf Stingel included the scratches and dust on the originals to his paintings, as well as the finger print of Ernst Ludwig
Kirchner, which was on the negative of the Stafelalp.
Artwork and flooring in one: the carpet
stretches across the entire floor of the main
hall. The template was an antique, handmade
oriental carpet in the possession of
the artist, who lives in New York. For the exhibition
he transferred the colours into black
and white shades and had the pattern made
by Halbmond. In doing so, the original was
enlarged in such a way that visitors can play
with the visual appearance: if you look at the
floor beneath your feet, you only perceive
fuzzy light and dark patches. Only when you
let your eye wander and the distance is increased,
do the elements combine to form a
clear continual oriental design.
The carpet artwork is omnipresent. Apart
from the chandeliers, the exhibition space
only houses this one exhibit – Therefore art
and free space are able to be experienced:
“Rudolf Stingel. LIVE” changes the atmosphere
of cool and distanced objectivity which
so often prevails in museums. The normally
reverberating footsteps are cushioned, whispered
voices are raised to normal conversations
– and still they do not disturb, as the
Carpet Magazine: How do visitors react
to the gallery?
Kittelmann: Very positively! Through the
installation by Rudolf Stingel, the visitors get
a very different sense of space. Suddenly
they have the need to sit on the floor and to
appreciate this special place in a completely
new way. Normally, the upper hall of the New
National Gallery seems to have a rather cool
atmosphere. Now the frugality and formal
reduction of the architecture meets the
strong graphic pattern and the sensual opulence
of the carpet. This can be unsettling at
carpet has changed the acoustics. Its soft
material ensures cosiness and leads visitors
to really let themselves go and to act
in a private manner in a public environment.
Everywhere people are sitting and lying on
the floorcovering; they read books and even
In combination with the reserved ambience of the straight-lined glass building, the carpet allows
fascinating contrasts to arise. Without a sofa, wardrobe or chair it changes the clear “modern
temple” into a cosy environment, in which visitors behave almost as if they were at home.
New National Gallery Berlin, Germany
Target group: art lovers from around the world
first. With this live installation, the “modern
temple” loses its abstract strength, and
approaches something close to a sanctuary
characterised by the oriental. The lavish
crystal chandeliers hang overhead. They
remind one of pompous appearances and in
doing so illustrate the inescapable European
perspectives. After all, Persian and Oriental
carpets have an established place in European
cultural history.
Carpet Magazine: What will happen to the
work after the exhibition?
remove their shoes! This is interaction appreciated
by Rudolf Stingel. Only through
the performance by the visitors does the
work become a live performance. By moving
across the carpet and leaving traces behind,
they keep on redefining the installation.
Schlosshotel Blankenburg, Harz, Germany ::
6 | The Carpet Magazine 17
For the castle barracks in Blankenburg, a new chapter in its history
began in January of this year. After extensive renovation work, the prestigious
building has begun a promising future as a high-class hotel.
The castle barracks, built for a regiment from
Brunswick in 1871, are enthroned high above the
town, in the middle of the Blankenburg castle gardens
and in the immediate vicinity of the old town.
The generously sized rooms with a
ceiling height of over 3.3 metres
are compelling with their simple, yet
comfortable furnishings.
Old Walls with a
new splendour

Whether for rest and relaxation or for conferences
and seminars – the Harz mountains
offer the best set of conditions for both. And
above all, when the right residence is chosen.
Brand new and at the pinnacle of the top
addresses in the region is the Schlosshotel
Blankenburg, which opened at the start of
the year.
With a building time of nine months, the owners
transformed the historic property into a
contemporary oasis of well-being.
“We attach the greatest importance to homeliness and
ensures a quiet room experience.” Diana Rabs, Hotel Manager
The 68 rooms of the Schlosshotel combine
the appeal of historic interiors with modern
comfort in an unobtrusive ambience. Generously-sized
function rooms, as well as a restaurant
with inside and outside terraces make
the attractive impression complete. The area
makes for an additional bonus: being set in
the Blankenburg castle gardens allows the
hotel direct access to the generously-sized
castle park, including an animal garden and
an orangery. What more do you need for a
pleasant stay?
DOMOTEX 2010 – Successful
The leading industry trade fair managed to maintain its position this year and at the same time deliv-
ered signs of an improvement in the economic environment. Although fewer exhibitors were present
in Hanover, the mood of the visitors was good. The huge crowd of people from Eastern Europe was
astonishing; on the other hand, customers from Asia and America were scarce.
Preview: at the northern entrance the 80-metre long
carpet matched the spectacular design of the stand.
Halbmond and HTW Design Carpet set the
standard for continuity and innovation at
DOMOTEX: following in good tradition, the
stand took on the look of the carpet at the
northern entrance, while our innovations bore
witness to our excellent potential for the future:
the carpet collections Jet and Hospitality
3, as well as the six tile collections TM1
to 6 received a great response right from the
start.
0098/10
Besides strengthening our contacts to regular
customers, we were able to attract a whole
host of new customers at DOMOTEX, mainly
from Eastern and Southern Europe. This
demonstrated the popularity of our company,
but also the growing interest in carpets
which are coloured using a Chromojet process
which puts colour right down to the base
of the carpet fibre. We are pleased by both of
these developments and they open up promising
perspectives.
Brand new and fire-resistant!
Due to demand, Halbmond and HTW Design Carpet
now offer IMO certified carpets. The quality seal issued
by the International Maritime Organization guarantees
the lowest level of flammability and fulfils the regulations
applicable to cruise ships.

Sustainability ::
Responsibility has Priority
Xentrys, producer of carpet yarn and fibres, manages to win people
over not just through its high-quality products, but also with its sense
of responsibility creativity, quality and flexibility are standards which
are practised on a daily basis at their production locations; comprehensive
sustainability and social awareness are the clearly defined criteria.
Xentrys operates according to certified
economic, social and environment-orientated
guidelines. All yarn and fibres are produced
in a cycle which focuses on vertical
integration, recycling and the use of green
energy. Through its membership of Care
& Fair and Plan International Deutschland
e.V., the company supports educational and
health projects in carpet-producing countries.
Those responsible are convinced that
we should not simply accept that there are
developments which bring improvements
across the world, but we must put them into
practice. Further information:
www.xentrys.com
From the production locations in Leuna (Germany)
and Gent (Belgium) the company delivers its
products to Herford, among other places. A
recent example is yarn which was used in the
carpet for the New National Gallery in Berlin.
INTERGASTRA, Stuttgart ::
Solutions which
Serve as an Example
INTERGASTRA has come up with an innovation this year:
In hall 6 the theme park FOKUS HOTEL presents examples of furnishing
ideas for the hotel industry, developed by interior architects'
office Markus Diedenhofen. Set in perfect example mock-ups, they
give an impression which appears real. Halbmond was represented
in the lobby/bar area.
Consistent overall look:
The harmonious red shades of
the carpet take up the colouring
of the design of the walls
and the seating – a practical
example of the almost unlimited
possibilities for patterns.
First Class ::
Promenade: a ‘long’ carpet by Halbmond.
Named, in the design, were all previous prize
winners and this carpet became the focus
point of the winner’s ceremony – see below.
The Red Carpet
for Excellent
Hoteliers
On 25 January the “Hotelier of the Year”
was chosen in the Inter Continental in
Berlin. The top event for the German
hotel trade delighted more than 1,000
guests with an exquisite programme,
with the highlight of course being the
presentation of the award itself. And this
year the presentation was very unusual:
instead of reading out the names, they
were presented in printed form – on a carpet,
which was gradually rolled out and
which finally revealed the winner.
Successful presentation:
Halbmond unrolled the
names of this year's prize
winners.
Something floral for the lounge:
at the subsequent get-together
people came across
a further carpet specially
created for the occasion.
From the restaurant and bar to the conference
rooms: an individual design has been
and function of the room.
A new eye-catcher now shines in Landsberger
andel's Hotel Berlin. Rated four star superior,
it is an ideal host for travellers with a sense
After the financial difficulties of the original
owner, the magnificent building once conceived
of as the “Landsberger Arkaden”
(Shopping Centre) stood empty for 10 years –
until a dedicated group of investors breathed
new life into the project. In order to create
room for generous floor space, extensive
rebuilding work was necessary. Some parts
of the building were completely gutted and
totally rebuilt. Step for step everything which
characterises a hotel was created out of the
former retail spaces. Also included was the
former courtyard, which today creates a
unique conference area.
