THE REGISTERS
Although the cemetery started in 1845 the first register is missing and has never been filmed. It was lodged in a
solicitor’s office but despite attempts to find its whereabouts after the solicitor closed his office, it has never been
recovered. The Society published the first two extant registers, from 1853 to 1856, in 2008. This is the final
completed Index which includes the third volume.
Register 1 starts from 30 th October 1853 and ends on 25 th March 1855. Surnames beginning with the letter ‘I’ are
missing. Register 2 starts from the end of March 1855 and finishes on 31 st December 1856 with only the letter
‘X’ missing from the surnames. Register 3 starts from 1 st January 1857, finishes on 31 st December 1859 and
contains just over 37,000 entries (including variants). Unfortunately surnames beginning with the letters X, Y and
Z are missing from the original register. The combined available registers produce a total of over 64,000 entries,
which includes a number of variations of names.
Microfilm copies of the registers are to be found at the National Archives at Kew under piece numbers RG8/42-51
and at Tower Hamlets Local History Library, Bancroft Road, Stepney.
No attempt has been made to correct any mis-spellings which occur in the original registers or to exclude entries
which have been crossed out. There are a few entries where two surnames have been given and both
alternative names have been included.
It seems to have been the custom at this cemetery for the parish burials to be written up at the end of the
month, and sometimes at the end of the year! Therefore if you are checking the microfilm for a certain date,
ensure you check further pages. For further details regarding parish burials a visit should be made to the London
Metropolitan Archives at 40, Northampton Road, London, EC1R OHB for access to the workhouse registers.
