SUMMER PREVIEW

DIRECTOR MARTIN CAMPBELL

STARRING RYAN REYNOLDS, BLAKE LIVELY,

MARK STRONG OPENS 17 JUNE

THE GIST Test pilot Hal Jordan is the first human

inducted into an intergalactic group of superheroes

called The Green Lantern Corps. With his power

ring, he must save Earth from the evil alien, Parallax.

THE SELL “Green Lantern is a great comic book

and terrific source material for the big screen,”

says Josh Berger, President of Warner Bros UK.

“The enthusiasm among fans has been incredible

and we’re really excited to be working with Ryan.

The studio is putting a huge amount of effort into

Green Lantern, it’s one of the bedrocks of our DC

Entertainment strategy we announced last year.”

THE BREAKDOWN “Obviously Warner Bros is

trying to kick-start a new superhero franchise,”

reckons Goodridge. “Whether it delivers

something new is another matter, though. Martin

Campbell is incredibly good at doing this kind of

movie and it’s a highly digital production, but there

may be superhero overkill and there are always

a couple of disappointments in the summer.”

THE VERDICT

New hero, new hope Warner Bros

needs Green Lantern to rival Marvel’s

big-screen lure. Ryan Reynolds and

some inventive CG might do it.

Predicted global box office

DIRECTOR CATHERINE HARDWICKE

STARRING AMANDA SEYFRIED, MAX IRONS,

GARY OLDMAN OPENS 15 APRIL

THE GIST In a medieval village, Valerie (Amanda

Seyfried) is torn between two men but even

more worried by the werewolf that’s stalking the

community every time the moon is full…

THE SELL “It seems like it will have every chance to

tap into the Twilight fanbase,” says Josh Berger.

“Everybody knows the story. This is just a different

take: an updated, sexier version. It’s also catering

to an audience that doesn’t get looked after so

well amid all the summer blockbusters.”

THE BREAKDOWN “I’m intrigued by this,”

says Goodridge. “It has a lot of good talent and

Catherine Hardwicke is a reliable director. But it’s

something of an unknown and I’m not sure how

adult or sexual it’s going to be. It’s aimed at girls,

which will definitely work in its favour. It’s not an

incredibly exciting summer for teenage girls.”

Scarlet woman:

Amanda Seyfried

as the reimagined

Red Riding Hood.

THE VERDICT

The Twilight effect is the wild card here, but

recent films like The Wolfman haven’t set a good

precedent for lycanthropes at the box office.
