ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
Rather than give you any of my words this week. I would like to just point you toward an
address of our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, on the Year of the Faith. The below is
from his audience November 21. His addresses are worth reading in their entirety. You
can find them at www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/audiences/2012/index_en.htm.
“Let us proceed in this Year of Faith bearing in our hearts the hope of finding all the joy
there is in believing and of rediscovering the enthusiasm of communicating the truths of
the faith to all. These truths are not a simple message about God, a particular piece of information
on him. On the contrary they express the event of God’s encounter with human beings, a salvific and liberating
encounter which fulfills the deepest aspirations of the human heart, the yearning for peace, brotherhood and love.
Faith leads to the discovery that the meeting with God enhances, perfects and exalts all that is true, good and beautiful
that exists in man. So it happens that while God reveals himself and lets himself be known, man comes to realize who
God is and in knowing him, discovers himself, his true origin, his destiny, the greatness and dignity of human life....
The Catholic faith is therefore reasonable and fosters trust in human reason as well. (The Holy Father gives an example
of this), The virtual relationship between science and faith is also founded on these premises concerning the fertile connection
between understanding and believing. Scientific research leads to the knowledge of ever new truths about man
and about the cosmos, as we see it. The true good of humanity, accessible in faith, unfolds the horizons within which
the process of its discovery must move… Faith, lived truly, does not come into conflict with science but, rather, cooperates
with it, offering the basic criteria to promote the good of all and asking it to give up only those endeavours which
— in opposition to God’s original plan — produce effects that are detrimental to the human being.
Let us trust, therefore, that our commitment to evangelization may help to restore a new centrality to the Gospel in the
life of untold men and women of our time. .. It is worth expending oneself for Christ, he alone satisfies the desires for
truth and goodness that are rooted in every human being’s soul: now, in time that passes, and in the never ending day of
blessed Eternity.
Father Joseph LoJacono, IVE
Note from the Director: December 9, 2012
Today we encounter commands from Baruch in our first reading, which urges us to take off our robes of mourning and
misery and to stand upon the heights. Missing from this are the verbal pacifiers we encounter in contemporary discourse,
such as: “Let us discern which direction we are moving into self-actualizing our inner herald.”
Isaiah is full of direct commands, starting with his announcement, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” Or from Isaiah in today’s
debut of John, campaigning for reform and conversion to the people living around the Jordan River: “Prepare the
way of the Lord, make straight his paths...” This text has numerous musical settings, ranging from a tenor solo in Handel’s
Messiah to the twentieth-century pop cantata Godspell by Michael Tebalak and Stephen Schwartz—clear proof
that the promised Messiah has come and will come to all.
Baruch elaborates: “Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning”—or if you missed
the instructions the first time, you are urged (as Jerusalem was) to “stand upon the
heights and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the
Holy One rejoicing that they are remembered by God.” Hardly language one would
expect from the liturgy of the Second Sunday of Advent, when we begin to feel a little
nostalgic for Christmases past with Christmas two weeks away. Mild panicky
trembling would not be appropriate. Quiet joy, however, would be very appropriate.
Please consider the music program in your holiday giving.
$12,683.00
From the Parish Administrator
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Thank you to everyone who has given so generously to
the support of Saints Peter and Paul Church. We are
currently running an operating deficit of $35,735.00. At
our last Finance Council meeting it was recommended
that we cut 10% out of our expenses to help cover the
weekly giving shortfall from last year. This shortfall
amounts to $3.90 per week per family. I ask that you
prayerfully consider increasing your weekly giving to
help us meet the needs of Saints Peter and Paul Church.
Reconciliation Prayer Service
the Communal Reconciliation Prayer service
Sunday, December 16 th at 6:00 pm
held in the Church. A delicious homemade
Soup Supper will follow in Jesuit Hall!
Respect Life
God is the Savior; we are those who are
in peril. He is the physician; we are the
infirm. To realize this is the first step
towards salvation, towards emerging
from the maze in which we have been locked by our
pride. To lift our eyes to heaven, to stretch out our
hands and call for help is our means of escape, provided
that there is someone who hears us and can come to our
assistance. Jesus Christ is the proof that God has heard
our cry. And not only this! God’s love for us is so
strong that He cannot remain aloof; He comes out of
himself to enter into our midst and to share fully in our
human condition (cf. Ex 3:7-12)….Only the God who is
love, and the love which is God, could choose to save us
in this way, which is certainly the lengthiest way, yet the
way which respects the truth about Him and about us:
the way of reconciliation, dialogue and cooperation.
~Pope Benedict XVI, Urbi et Orbi Christmas Message, 2011
2 DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO 9 DE DICEMBRE 2012
San Juan Diego
nació en 1474 en el
"calpulli" de Tlayacac
en Cuauhtitlán, México,
establecido en 1168
por la tribu nahua y
conquistado por el jefe
Azteca Axayacatl en
