many construction and

renovation projects that are

under way or have recently

been completed. As Saint Clare’s transformation

continues to unfold, we are grateful to our donors

and friends for their generosity. With your support,

we have made investments in our facilities that

allow Saint Clare’s to continue to enhance the high

quality and compassionate care that we provide.

There are many exciting events happening this

spring at the Saint Clare’s Foundation, including

15th Annual Spring Gala Honorees

The 15th Annual Spring Gala will be held on

May 4, 2012, at the Westmount Country Club in

Woodland Park, N.J. The 2012 Gala committee,

led by co-chairs Gale Bott and Ann McManus,

has been busy this past year planning this

elegant event. This year’s Spring Gala will include

a dinner, live entertainment by the Infernos,

dancing, silent and live auctions, as well as a

50/50 prize raffle. As the Saint Clare’s Foundation’s

biggest fundraiser, the Spring Gala aims to raise

funds in support of Saint Clare’s and its mission

to improve the health and well being of the

community by providing the highest-quality care.

During the event, the Foundation will bestow

awards to several individuals for their contributions

to Saint Clare’s and the community.

Alma Ratcliffe, MD, Executive Vice President,

Medical Affairs, at Saint Clare’s, will be presented

with the 2012 Physician Humanitarian Award;

and Emergency Physicians of Saint Clare’s, LLC,

will receive the 2012 Leadership Award. Mary

Mulholland and the late Dr. Robert Mulholland

will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rohan Somar, MD

Emergency Physicians

of Saint Clare’s

Born on the island of Cebu in the southern

Philippines, Dr. Ratcliffe grew up in a very

religious Catholic family, and attributes her

family for teaching her the value of hard work,

and giving back to those in need. During her

time at Saint Clare’s, Dr. Ratcliffe has worked

hard to incorporate these values in the many

programs and services she has led, coordinated

and implemented, and would like to share this

award with the many physicians, leaders and

staff at Saint Clare’s who embody a humanitarian

spirit. She acknowledges each and every one of

them giving tribute to all they do every day for

Saint Clare’s and the community. “I believe that

together we can make a difference,” Dr. Ratcliffe

said. “We make a living by what we receive, but

make a life by what we give.” Dr. Ratcliffe and her

husband Jesse have two sons: Justin, who is a

physician and cardiology fellow in New York City,

and Joffre, who is a computer software engineer

in San Diego.

Dr. Robert and Mary Mulholland

Emergency Physicians of Saint Clare’s has

pledged $1 million to support system-wide

emergency department renovations through the

Miracles: Saint Clare’s Vision for the Future

campaign, led by Chairman and Medical Director

Rohan Somar, MD, FACEP, FAAEM. Emergency

Physicians of Saint Clare’s believes in its mission

to provide the highest-quality emergency care

to the community in the most efficient and

customer-friendly manner. During the past 10

years, the group has worked to improve patient

flow, quality and satisfaction in Saint Clare’s

emergency departments. Founded in 2002, there

are now 24 doctors and 10 physician assistants,

who provide 24-hour clinical coverage to Saint

Clare’s emergency departments in Denville,

Dover and Sussex.

Framing the Future

The many capital construction projects taking

place at Saint Clare’s are moving forward this

year as the health system continues to upgrade

its facilities to meet the needs of its patients in

an ever-changing healthcare environment. With

the support of generous donors and Catholic

Health Initiatives, Saint Clare’s has been transforming

its four main campuses with the finest

services and sophisticated technology along

with cosmetic upgrades. Many of these projects

have been completed but work continues at the

Denville campus.

Saint Clare’s Emergency Department (ED)

Expansion and Renovation project is nearing

completion. The expanded ED will be a more

efficient, patient-centered environment with more

private, spacious and modernized treatment

areas. Recent work completed includes the

Psychiatric Emergency space that has doubled

in size from three to six beds and is more

conducive to quality behavioral health care. Also

completed are the new ED entrance, two new

triage rooms, and a new reception and registration

area as well as separate waiting areas for adults

and children. Renovations are also completed on

the Evelyn M. Spiro Pediatric Emergency Care

Center, which offers the expertise, training and

special equipment to take care of a child and

their parents in an emergency. The Center

increased from a five-bed treatment area to one

with eight beds. Also completed is an upgraded

ambulance entrance in late December.

The renovated Emergency Department in Denville features a special

children’s waiting area.

The new Evelyn M. Spiro Pediatric Emergency Care Center in Denville

provides emergency treatment to children in a kid-friendly atmosphere.

Each of the eight patient areas is equipped with a television and is

brightly decorated so children feel as calm and comfortable as possible.

The final phase to renovate the main part of the

ED is being designed and will begin in April. Also

to be completed is a new ED canopy that is also in

the design phase. This canopy will provide shelter

for patients and visitors as well as a new area for

discharging patients. This project is scheduled to

be completed this summer, weather permitting.

Phase three work continues on the first floor of

the Urban Tower in Denville. With phase one

completed in November, patients and staff were

relocated to the newly renovated area. Phase 2 was

completed in February. The new unit received a

new telemetry system, new windows and flooring,

flat screen televisions, bed exit systems, and is

GetWellNetwork ready. The GetWellNetwork,

generously donated by Saint Clare’s Auxiliary/

Denville and Boonton Township, provides

access to health education programs, hospital

services, medication information and entertainment

options, including access to the Internet,

television programming, movies, video games

and music, directly at the patient’s bedside. Work

on the first floor of the Urban Tower has begun

and will be completed in June.

Another significant project that is under way is

the renovation of the Same Day Surgery unit in

Denville. The unit will receive cosmetic upgrades,

an expanded waiting room and the redesign of

the ancillary rooms. This project will be completed

in 2012.

Framing the Future (Continued from page 5)

At Saint Clare’s Boonton campus, the newly

remodeled Children’s Crisis Intervention Services

(CCIS) unit is now fully functional. The CCIS

inpatient unit provides high-quality and compassionate

care for children and adolescents

between 5 and 17 years of age who have been

assessed to be in need of a safe and supportive,

inpatient level of care. The renovation of the

CCIS unit is supported in part through generous

donors of Saint Clare’s Foundation.

“These construction and renovation projects

demonstrate our commitment to providing

modern facilities for our patients,” said

Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, President and Chief

Executive Officer, of Saint Clare’s Health

System. “With the support of our donors, these

investments allow Saint Clare’s to provide

high quality and compassionate patient care

in an environment that also offers the latest in

leading-edge medical technology.”

Saint Clare’s filed a Certificate of Need (CON)

application with the state of New Jersey in

November to transform its Sussex facility into

an outpatient-oriented facility and discontinue

inpatient medical and all surgical services. As

such, pending the state’s approval of the CON,

the Sussex facility will continue to operate a fully

functioning Satellite Emergency Department,

the Women’s Health Center, and other selected

outpatient services, including imaging and

laboratory services.

There are still funding opportunities available to

support these important projects. Partner with us

in meeting the healthcare needs

of those we serve today…and for

years to come.

Denville Cardiac Rehabilitation Center

Up and Running

Saint Clare’s recently celebrated

the reopening of its Cardiac

Rehabilitation Center at the Denville

campus with a Blessing ceremony.

Physicians, colleagues and Saint

Clare’s leadership gathered for

the Blessing in the new space

that recently received a complete

makeover, including a new ceiling,

skid-proof flooring, nursing work

stations, a weather-proof entry way,

and flooring in the common areas and offices. The makeover was needed due to the significant

damage sustained from the effects of Hurricane Irene late last August. As a result of the damage, staff,

patients and physicians shared space at the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at the Dover campus for

several months. This was a challenging time for all.

Cardiac Rehab patient Bernadette Dalesandro said the

Center saved her life, twice.

“When I first started, my goal was to regain

strength and aerobic activity and prevent my

condition from getting worse,” said longtime

Cardiac Rehabilitation patient Bernadette Dalesandro.

“What I found was emotional support from

anew family, my Cardiac Rehab family.”

She credits the staff for her recovery, saying, “One day during my workout, one of the nurses noticed

something different about the way I was going about my workout. She put a monitor on me and found

I was having a cardiac episode. Her quick thinking, knowledge and response saved me. That is just one

of the reasons I have stayed with the program for four years now.”

Saint Clare’s offers a comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program that works closely with patients

and their families to improve health, and to teach the skills needed to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The supervised exercise and education programs are available for people who have experienced:

heart attack, chest pain (angina), heart bypass surgery, valve surgery, heart transplant, angioplasty and

stent placement.

“Many people contributed their time and efforts to make sure the new center was ready for opening

on January 3, 2012,” said Sandra Pressimone, Director of Cardiovascular Services. “We appreciate our

dedicated staff of cardiac rehabilitation nurses for their commitment to our patients. We would also

like to express our thanks to our patients for their understanding and for supporting our department

during this difficult transition.”

The Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For more information on Saint Clare’s

Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, please call 973-625-6020.

Pet Therapy Program

Provides Canine Comfort

to Patients and Staff

On a recent Sunday at Saint Clare’s in Denville,

a nurse was having a difficult time examining an

elderly patient who was in a lot of pain. Then

Abbie entered the room. The patient forgot

about her pain long enough for the nurse to do

what she needed to care for the woman. “She

was enough of a distraction to take the edge off

the pain,” said Sandi Selwood, who owns Abbie,

a 2½-year-old tri-colored Welsh Corgi, who is

the newest member of Saint Clare’s Pet Therapy

program. “It was the best thing that could have

happened.”

Now in its fourth year, the popular program offers

tremendous benefits to patients, their families

and staff, as well as the human and animal

volunteers. Gary Kerner was the first to bring

pet therapy to Saint Clare’s with his dogs,

Bogart and Layla. He decided to pursue it after

experiencing firsthand how a visit from his dogs

brought him out of a depression while he was

at a nursing facility. “When my wife came in

with the dogs, a light bulb went off in my head:

This is what I want to do,” Gary recalled. “If I can,

I want to put a smile on someone’s face,

because I was there.” Bogart and Layla have

since died, but Gary plans to return to the

program soon with Ricky, the nine-monthold

Rough Collie he is currently training.

Abbie

Numerous studies have shown the benefits to

people of pet ownership and interactions in a

hospital, nursing home or school setting. The

volunteers who visit at Saint Clare’s confirm the

positive impacts and say patients aren’t the only

ones who are benefiting. The animals also help to

relieve the daily stresses faced by the staff, and

the dogs help lift the spirits of visitors who are

worried about their loved ones or coping with the

reality that they will soon lose a friend or relative.

Marie Eisenhart recalled how Pearl, her nearly

six-year-old Golden Retriever, was able to help

a woman visiting the oncology unit. “Whoever

she was there to see was not doing well. She was

literally sitting on the floor in the hall with her

head down. Pearl went over and they just bonded

so beautifully. It picked that woman right up,”

said Marie, whose husband Herb volunteers with

her and Pearl.

All of the canine

volunteers at Saint

Clare’s are certified

Pet Therapy dogs.

This means they

have all completed

special training and

passed a test to

ensure they are able to handle patient visits.

Their human owners are also official volunteers

and both human and dog proudly wear Saint

Clare’s ID badges. When the dogs arrive on a

floor, a second volunteer accompanies dog and

owner, and will ask for permission before the pet

enters a patient’s room to make sure the person

is interested or won’t be affected by an allergy.

But often this is not even necessary, as patients’

relatives will come out into the hall and urge the

dog to visit.

Mable and Ricky (right), two of Saint Clare’s pet therapy dogs, lift the

spirits of patients, visitors and staff alike. (Continued on page 9)

Pet Therapy (Continued from page 8)

Laura Treutlein recalled such an instance when

walking her nearly five-year-old Golden Retriever

Recon around the hospital one day. They had

been counseled to avoid one of the patient rooms

because someone was soon expected to pass

away. But then a visitor came into the hallway and

asked if they could go inside because the patient

loved dogs.

“Recon went right in and put his head between

her arm and rib cage. I watched her as she went

from struggled breathing to relaxed,” Laura said.

Donna Grezlik-Hocke has also seen first hand

how her four-year-old Great Dane Black Diamond,

a veteran with three years of pet therapy work

under his collar, has helped patients.

“ When we walk through the

cancer center, if we are seeing

chemotherapy patients who are

not acutely sick, just for a minute,

they can kind of forget what they

are going through,” Donna said.

The hospital currently has seven Pet Therapy

volunteers and 10 certified dogs. Two dogs

are owned by staff members and one

belongs to a Saint Clare’s physician,

Dr. Marty Sweinhart. “She knows her

way around the hospital better than

some of the employees,” quipped

Dr. Sweinhart about Mable, her

5½-year-old Border Collie mix.

“She loves the attention.”

Saint Clare’s

Pet Therapy Team

Pet therapy dog Mable has her own Saint Clare’s ID badge as do all the

pet therapy dogs.

The Pet Therapy program accommodates the

busy schedules of the dogs, many of whom also

volunteer at schools, nursing homes and other

facilities. Generally, one dog is on campus each

week and one visits on weekends. The volunteers

also offer their services on an on-call basis when

they can. For more information about Pet Therapy

at Saint Clare’s, please call Volunteer Services at

Grotta Fund for Senior Care Helps Launch

Transitions in Care Program

Keeping recently discharged patients from winding up back in the hospital is smart medicine. To

help patients with heart failure and diabetes avoid readmission to the hospital, Saint Clare’s recently

launched a new program called Transitions in Care.

Pictured (l-r): Regina Hanna, APN, Deborah Kline, APN, and Mary Beth

Wetzelberger, APN, from the Transitions in Care program.

The goal of the Transitions in Care

program is to reduce preventable hospital

admissions in these patients by 20 percent.

Responding to the need for improved

transitions in care, Eric Coleman, MD,

from the University of Colorado, created

the Care Transitions Intervention (CTI).

Since then, there have been successful CTI

implementations throughout the country

of the Coleman coaching model. Saint

Clare’s has implemented the CTI model.

Carol Diveny, Foundation Corporate

Relations Manager, coordinated the grant

effort that resulted in funding of $100,000

from the Grotta Fund for Senior Care

of the Jewish Community Foundation of

MetroWestNJ.

Dedicated to improving the lives of seniors primarily living in Essex, Morris and Union counties, the

Grotta Fund for Senior Care provides grant support to local agencies that benefit older adults and their

families, helping them to live independently and safely in their homes and communities. Grotta has

awarded more than $3 million dollars in grants to 45 agencies since 2003. These grants serve seniors

living in the MetroWest New Jersey area with innovative health and social service programs. Many

of Grotta’s grant-funded programs have become national models of care, addressed emergency or

emerging situations and replicated evidence-based programs. The program focuses on empowering

the patient to ensure the safe transition between healthcare providers and healthcare settings as the

patient’s condition or need for care changes.

Each patient enrolled in Transitions in Care is guided through the program by an advanced practice

nurse navigator, who helps patients clarify their goals for care, medication reconciliation, red flags, and

what questions to ask their physician. Patients are visited by their nurse navigator prior to discharge and

are also seen shortly after leaving the hospital. A key component of the Transitions in Care program is

follow-up after a patient is discharged. After the home visit, a series of three follow-up phone calls are

conducted to empower patients to work more effectively with their doctors.

The Transitions in Care team includes a skilled and dedicated group of cardiologists, registered

nurses, dieticians, pastoral care, nurse practitioners, social workers, case managers, pharmacists,

VNA of Sussex, VNA of Northern New Jersey, and Care One of Morris. Saint Clare’s will continue its

partnerships in caring. “This program is aimed at patients who return to the hospital with the same

diagnosis,” said Saint Clare’s cardiologist Dr. Michael Blick. “Empowering the patient and involved

caregiver to be more proactive in their healthcare is at the core of the program.”

For more information about the Transitions in Care program, please contact Mary Beth Wetzelberger,

APN, Deborah Kline, APN, or Regina Hanna, APN, at 973-983-5270.

Dedicated Saint Clare’s Auxiliaries Continue

Their Generous Missions

Each of the three Saint Clare’s Hospital Auxiliaries work tirelessly throughout the year on numerous

fundraising initiatives to generate funding for its hospitals.

Saint Clare’s Denville/Boonton Township Auxiliary

held its annual luncheon at the Zeris Inn in

New Nativity Embodies Catholic Ministry

Patricia Dreyfuss, MD and Saint Clare’s

Foundation Board Member with Pete Haas.

Longtime Saint Clare’s supporter Peter Haas made

Christmas more special for all who visited the

Denville campus during the Christmas season.

Haas donated a nativity to Saint Clare’s in honor

of his wife, Rosemary Burroughs Haas, RN, for

her years of service as a nurse and volunteer.

The Saint Clare’s Foundation accepted the

nativity given to Saint Clare’s/Denville at a blessing

ceremony held on Monday, December 12, 2011,

on the hill in front of the hospital where the

nativity resides.

“ Our Catholic mission is at the

foundation of everything we do

at Saint Clare’s,”

said Jeff Lamie, executive director

and chief development officer.

“ This generous donation reminds

all who pass our hospital that we

embody a Catholic ministry and

are committed to our communities

and our patients.”

Fashion Fight for a Cure

Hosted by DePasquale the Spa Benefits

Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s

The second annual Fashion Fight for a Cure, a

fashion show and fundraising event hosted by

DePasquale the Spa, drew a crowd of more than

400 supporters, and raised $60,000 net after

expenses for Cancer Care at Saint Clare’s. Fashion

Fight for a Cure, held at the Hanover Marriott in

Whippany, NJ, on October 2, 2011, included a

top-notch fashion show with five runway shows, an

exclusive silent auction, and a $10,000 50/50 raffle.

The sold out event drew support from local

businesses, celebrities, and community members in

Morris County and the surrounding area – all uniting

to raise awareness and funds for the battle against

cancer. All proceeds from the event benefit Cancer

Care at Saint Clare’s, the comprehensive oncology

program of Saint Clare’s Health System.

The event is inspired by David DePasquale, MD, a

staff obstetrician-gynecologist at Saint Clare’s Health

System for 11 years, who succumbed to cancer two

years ago. This year’s event was held in memory of

Tatyana Petrushkevich, an employee of DePasquale

the Spa for more than 15 years, who lost her battle

to cancer last year at age 50.

“This is an outstanding event for Saint Clare’s, and

I just cannot say enough about it. The fact that

the DePasquale family and so many people who

are out here today, are raising money for cancer

and to look for a cure, is a wonderful tribute to

the family and a great thing for the community. At

Saint Clare’s, we can’t be more appreciative,” said

Pictured (l-r) are Dr. David Pasquale’s family: Mia DePasquale

(daughter), Anne DePasquale (wife), Nicholas DePasquale (son),

Justin DePasquale, President of DePasquale the Spa and Salon,

who was inspired to organize the event by his late cousin,

Dr. David DePasquale.

“It’s a beautiful thing to get everyone in the salon together to contribute.

It’s really important for us all to do something – even if it’s just one thing –

and raise some money so that way we can kick this disease, find a cure,

and in the meantime, make people in hospitals as equipped as possible to

deal with it as best as they can,” said Justin DePasquale, co-owner and director

of DePasquale the Spa.

Leslie D. Hirsch, president and CEO of Saint Clare’s

Health System.

16 SPRING 2012 VISIONS

One in a Million

It was a beautiful October day, crisp and clear,

and picturesque New Hope, Pennsylvania, was

packed with tourists enjoying the leaves and the

quaint shops in this bustling community on the

Delaware River. After a pleasant afternoon that

included lunch, a stroll and a little shopping, I was

driving home when the car in front of us stopped.

The driver abruptly got out, opened the back

door and seemed to be trying to pull someone

out of the car.

Concerned, I ran from my car and saw a man in

his late 50s who was clearly in cardiac arrest. He

was unconscious and not breathing. Although

the man probably weighed around 280 pounds, I

somehow found the strength to get him out of the

car easily. I knew there were mere minutes before

brain damage set in and I went into autopilot.

Not thinking, but drawing on all my skills, I began

performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation using

rapid chest compressions.

I had never performed life-saving measures

outside a hospital setting and it was terrifying,

despite my training and skills. It’s not something

you want to have to do.

People crowded around and some even asked if

they could help but I didn’t want to risk letting

someone inexperienced step in, so I continued

the CPR. Someone had called 911, but it seemed

like the patrol car took forever. Traffic was heavy.

After about seven minutes, I was exhausted and

a patrolman on the scene took over. Very soon,

the patrol car came with a portable defibrillator.

On opening the man’s shirt to use the defibrillator

paddles, I saw that he had a scar from bypass

surgery and felt hopeful that the arrest had been

caused by an arrhythmia that defibrillation could

correct.

SACRED STORY

An ambulance took the man to the hospital. He

had survived. Two days later, police called me to

say the man was doing well. It gave me a sense

of tremendous satisfaction to have helped save

his life.

Due to confidentiality laws, I never got his name

or any more information about him. To this day, I

still don’t know who he is. Studies have found that

it is imperative to keep the blood flowing or brain

damage can occur in less than five minutes. Had

I not been there at that exact moment, would he

have survived?

It was a one-in-a-million chance.
