From the Driver’s Seat

As we begin another 

year, rest assured that 

your officers and 

chair people are hard 

at work behind the 

scenes constantly 

looking for ways to 

make improvements 

and innovations to 

our region. I am 

proud to announce that the first such 

innovation of the year is our new and 

improved full color newsletter. Prior to 

this, our newsletter was one of only 2 in 

the zone that still printed in black and 

white. We will now be one of the first 

to be printing entirely in color 

throughout the whole newsletter. In 

addition, you will also notice an 

improvement in the paper quality of 

both the cover and the interior of the 

newsletter as well. We hope you will 

appreciate these changes and enjoy der 

RÜCKSPIEGEL in color. 

At our February 21 Business meeting, 

which was attended by at least 20 

members, a great deal of items were 

addressed, including filling vacant 

Board positions and electing a new 

Secretary. Congratulations to newly 

elected Board Member Lisa Soriano, as 

well as newly elected Secretary Jim 

Schoen. 

March is shaping up to be very busy. 

Maumee Valley region once again 

hosted the Social Gathering for the 

Zone 4 Presidents’ Meeting. The 

gathering was held on Friday, March 1 

at the original Tony Packo’s, and I want 

to thank Jack Mechel and Pat and Gary 

Ambrus for attending the event and 

taking the time to help welcome several 

other region presidents, Zone 4 Rep 

Ron Carr and his wife Constance and 

National PCA Secretary Sean Reardon, 

who flew in from Kansas to attend the 

Presidents’ Meeting. The following day 

Barney and I attended the Zone 4 

Presidents’ Meeting at Maumee Bay 

State Park Lodge; my report from the 

meeting will be in next month’s 

newsletter. Tuesday March 12 is the day 

registration opens for Parade, which is 

being held nearby in Traverse City, MI. 

from June 23-29. Even if you cannot 

spend the entire week, I strongly 

recommend you drive up for even a few 

days; it truly is a fantastic experience.

to register for this fantastic and fun

Curling at the BGSU Ice Arena from 

7-8:30 p.m. followed by food and 

drinks at the Gargasz’s home. Everyone 

who has attended for the past 2 years

didn’t want to curl, had just as much fun 

watching us, as we learned how to play 

this very unique sport. Our next 

Business Meeting will be April 11 at 7 

p.m. in the Vin Devers Conference 

room. The first Cars and Coffee at Tim 

Horton’s begins April 14; these popular 

and fun meets usually take place on the 

2 nd Sunday of the month at the Tim 

Horton’s on Central Avenue just west 

of McCord. And on April 27, Jeff, Teri, 

and Natalie Vollmar are hosting a party 

at their home in Shelby Twp., MI.; be 

there at Noon for all the fun! 

Just thinking about all of these exciting 

events makes me ready for the day 

when I can remove the car covers, 

unplug the trickle chargers, and be able 

to enjoy some pure driving pleasure. 

It has been an honor to serve as your 

President these past 2 years, and I have 

greatly appreciated the support you 

have shown me. Let’s make this year 

even better. If you have regularly been 

attending events, I thank you and hope 

that you will continue to do the same. 

However, if you have not been to an 

event in a while, please take some time 

to review the Calendar of Events either 

in der RÜCKSPIEGEL or on the region 

website http://mm.pca.org. Come out to 

just even one event, and I’m sure you’ll 

be back, because, “PCA is not just 

about the Cars….It’s about the People.”

"The" Sports Car Celebrates a Special Anniversary

Atlanta. For five decades, the 911 has 

been the heart of the Porsche brand. 

Few other automobiles in the world can 

look back on such a long tradition and 

with such genuine continuity as the 

Porsche 911. It has been inspiring car 

enthusiasts the world over since its 

debut as the Type 901 at the IAA 

International Automotive Show in 

September 1963. Today it is considered 

the quintessential sports car, the 

benchmark for all others. The 911 is 

also the central point of reference for all 

other Porsche series. From the Cayenne 

to the Panamera, every Porsche is the 

most sporting automobile in its 

category, and each one carries a piece 

of the 911 philosophy. 

More than 820,000 Porsche 911s have 

been built, making it one of the most 

successful sports cars in the world. For 

each of its seven generations the 

engineers in Zuffenhausen and 

Weissach have reinvented it, time and 

time again demonstrating to the world 

the innovative power of the Porsche 

brand. Like no other vehicle, the 911 

reconciles apparent contradictions such 

as sportiness and everyday practicality, 

tradition and innovation, exclusivity and 

social acceptance, design and 

functionality. It is no wonder that each 

generation has written its own personal 

success story. Ferry Porsche best 

described its unique qualities: “The 911 

is the only car you could drive on an 

African safari or at Le Mans, to the 

theater or through New York City 

traffic.” 

In addition to its classic yet unique 

lines, the Porsche 911 has always been 

distinguished by its advanced 

technology. Many of the ideas and 

technologies that made their debut in 

the Porsche 911 were conceived on the 

race track. The 911 was committed to 

the performance principle from the 

start, and motor racing is its most 

important test lab. From the very 

beginning it has been at home on 

circuits all over the world, earning a 

reputation as a versatile and dependable 

winner. Indeed, a good two thirds of 

Porsche's 30,000 race victories to date 

were notched up by the 911. 

How Porsche celebrates the 

anniversary 

For Porsche, the 50th anniversary of

this iconic sports car is the central 

theme of 2013. There will be a wide 

variety of anniversary events, starting 

with the “Retro Classics” automobile 

show in Stuttgart. From March 7-10 the 

Porsche Museum will ring in the 

anniversary year with four special 

exhibits: an early-model 911 Turbo 

Coupe, a 911 Cabriolet study from 

1981, a 1997 street version 911 GT1 

and the pre-series Type 754 T7. This 

chassis by Professor Ferdinand 

Alexander Porsche was a milestone on 

the way to the 911 design. 

The company is also sending an 

authentic 1967 model 911 on a world 

tour. Over the course of the year, this 

vintage 911 will travel to five 

continents where it will be shown in 

places like Pebble Beach, Calif., 

Shanghai, Goodwood, U.K., Paris and 

Australia. As an ambassador for the 

Porsche brand, this vintage 911 will be 

in attendance at many international 

fairs, historical rallies and motor sport 

events. Fans and interested individuals

The Porsche Museum is celebrating “50 

years of the Porsche 911” from June 4 - 

Sept. 29, 2013, with a special exhibition 

featuring the history and development 

of the 911. In the spring the museum’s 

own publishing house, Edition Porsche- 

Museum, will publish an anniversary 

edition entitled ‘911x911.’ 

INTERESTED IN VISITING GERMANY 

Several Maumee Valley region members expressing 

an interest in a group trip are planning a 7- to 10-day 

trip to Germany leaving on Sept. 18, 2013. 

The trip will include a visit to: 

•the Frankfurt Motor Show 

•the Porsche Factory and Museum 

•the Mercedes Benz Museum 

•Oktoberfest in Munich

I hope you like the new look of the print 

edition. The club has changed printers 

and we can now print in full color. 

While I am sure the newsletter looks 

better, there was a big learning curve to 

get the copy print ready for the new 

process. There is still much to learn and 

further improvements will be made. 

Mary at Optical Arts is planning a 

Porsche only trunk show to present the 

Porsche Design collection of glasses 

this May. What a great time to come out 

and see what she has to offer and maybe 

get some stylish eyewear. If you don’t 

wear glasses they offer really great 

looking sunglasses. Even if you are not 

ready to replace your existing glasses, 

you should come out anyway and 

maybe get some ideas for the next pair. 

Mary will be offering deals and there 

will be door prizes.
