Ross’ story
Four-year-old Ross, from East Lothian,
was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma,
a cancer of the soft tissue, around his
eye when he was 18 months old.
“Our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Julie, introduced
herself to us on the day we received Ross’ biopsy
results. We were shocked and confused but she
would come to appointments with consultants and
explain anything we didn’t understand.
When Ross needed to stay at the hospital overnight
my partner and I would take it in turns to stay on
the ward with him. We were also able to stay at
CLIC Sargent’s Home from Home in Edinburgh,
which is across the road from the hospital. It’s a
wonderful place
“We received a
CLIC Sargent
grant which was
a huge help.”
and the staff are
very helpful and
supportive.
I took 10 months off
work, and received
sick pay for the first
six months. We received a CLIC Sargent grant
which was a huge help. Our parking costs were
£10 a day, and when you’re at the
hospital so regularly
it really adds up.”
Lesley, Ross’ mum.
Who we are
Every day, 10 children and young
people in the UK hear the shocking
news they have cancer.
In most cases, treatment starts immediately, but
this can often take place many miles from home
and can last for as long as three years. Being
diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience
and the emotional, practical and financial
implications of treatment are intensely challenging
for the whole family.
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for
children and young people, and their families. We
provide clinical, practical and emotional support to
help them cope with cancer and get the most out
of life. We are there from diagnosis onwards and
aim to help the whole family deal with the impact
of cancer and its treatment, life after treatment
and, in some cases, bereavement.
“You never realise how the cancer
journey can affect so many different
aspects of life. Our CLIC Sargent
Social Worker, Adama, supported
both of us, from providing
emotional support for
Starr, to getting
me back to work.
She never let
us down.”
Karina, Starr’s mum
Anais’
story
16-year-old Anais,
from London, was
diagnosed with a brain
tumour in 2010.
“I met my CLIC Sargent Social Worker,
Urvashi, at hospital just after I was
diagnosed. She has been brilliant. If I
ever felt worried about my treatment
or how I was feeling, I could go to her
and she would give me lots of advice
and support.” Anais
“Urvashi really takes time to listen to how you
feel and she’s always there when we have
questions to ask about Anais’ treatment. It feels
like she’d do anything for us, from helping us
apply for the right benefits to sorting out a
CLIC Sargent short break for us.
Urvashi arranged for us to visit CLIC Sargent’s
holiday home in Scotland, Malcolm Sargent House,
for a week which is a great place to relax and
escape from reality for a while. Anais met other
young people, I met parents, and the staff were
all so friendly.
She helped us apply for a CLIC Sargent grant
which helped pay for a laptop to help Anais stay
connected with her friends. Without that, Anais
would have felt even more isolated.
How we help
The lives of children and young people with cancer
are dramatically changed by a cancer diagnosis
and the effects of treatment. Our aim is to ensure
that the whole family receives the support which
works best for them.
We provide:
Clinical, practical and emotional support to
children and young people with cancer, and
their families
Financial support, including grants and benefits
information to help families deal with the
financial impact of cancer
Free accommodation at our eight Homes
from Home – close to specialist hospitals
so that families can be near their children
during treatment
Free holidays and short breaks so that families
can spend time together, with the support of
our care professionals, away from the everyday
challenges of childhood cancer
A wide range of valuable information on
childhood cancer and its impact for children,
young people and their families.
We also campaign and influence others to raise
awareness of the needs of children and young
people with cancer and to improve the support
they and their families receive.
Urvashi really helped the whole family stay on
track and supported throughout Anais’ treatment.”
Juliette, Anais’ mum.
