After the success of last year our Ladies<br />
Night is back on Thursday 14 June and is<br />
going to be bigger and better than ever!<br />
Executive Director David MacDonald is looking forward to the event<br />
and said “Ladies night is now well and truly established as a highlight<br />
of the Staffordshire social calendar. We know that people start<br />
planning their outfits months in advance and all the racecourse staff<br />
enjoy and look forward to the night. Record numbers have attended<br />
in recent years in both hospitality and Premier admissions and we<br />
hope that 2012 will be the best year ever! After racing we can look<br />
forward to excellent Lady Gaga and George Michael tribute acts and<br />

David MacDonald,<br />
Executive Director<br />
I graduated in 1984 with a Lancaster University<br />
degree and my first job was President of the<br />
Student Union. I have always enjoyed leading<br />
teams so it seemed a natural progression.<br />
I remember being presented my degree<br />
by HRH Princess Alexandra who asked<br />
me if I had found a job. She seemed most<br />
disappointed with my intended career path!<br />
My first ‘proper’ job was with Mecca Leisure<br />
as an Assistant Manager in their nightclub division. I enjoyed the<br />
club business. The buzz that I got filling a nightclub is no different<br />
to seeing huge crowds at the racecourse. In my early thirties I<br />
became a Regional Manager covering 18 clubs in the Midlands and<br />
Wales and then in 1996 I was appointed as Operations Director<br />
for a group that owned several of the biggest dance venues in<br />
the UK. It was a hugely exciting time as dance music was very<br />
popular. From raves to racing is an unusual progression!<br />

In 2001 I teamed up with the late John Halewood, firstly as<br />
Marketing Manager but later heading up his UK On Trade Sales team.<br />
John owned big brands such as Lambrini and Crabbies. He also owned<br />
over 30 racehorses including 2004 Grand National Winner Amberleigh<br />
House. I remember telling him that I was leaving him in 2006. He was<br />
about to persuade me otherwise until I told him I was going to run<br />
a racecourse. He knew what a fantastic opportunity it was.<br />
I never forget how lucky I am to work at a racecourse. I am proud<br />
of <strong>Uttoxeter</strong>, its heritage, it’s beautiful grounds and surroundings.<br />
I am lucky to have some of the best senior managers in my support<br />
team in Charlie Moore (Clerk) and Jim Jarman (Financial Controller).<br />
I think the key to our success is that the team are all proud to work<br />
here from the ground staff to the cleaners to the office staff. If they<br />
care then the battle is half won! n<br />

FOOD FOR THOUGHT<br />

Things are moving quickly for the team behind The <strong>Uttoxeter</strong> Food & Drink<br />
Festival, which is set to take place at <strong>Uttoxeter</strong> <strong>Racecourse</strong> on Saturday 23<br />
and Sunday 24 June 2012.<br />
The first of what it is hoped will become an annual fixture is<br />
attracting great interest from local food producers, businesses and<br />
prospective visitors alike. With fifty five exhibitors already signed<br />
up, representing everything from beers and wines through to<br />
cheeses, meat, chocolates – and everything in between – there<br />
is a good mix of local producers and those from further afield,<br />
with stallholders traveling from Cheshire, Wales and Dorset to be<br />
a part of this exciting new event. Amongst the exhibitors is the<br />
Orchard Pigs pie company from Wrexham, whose founder Rob<br />
Didier trained under Raymond Blanc. Joining them are Lymestone<br />
Breweries from Stone and a number of other real ale breweries.<br />
In addition to the opportunity to browse, sample and purchase food<br />
from artisan producers visitors will get the chance to pick up tips and<br />
recipes during the live cookery demonstrations from top local chefs.<br />
Real ale fans are in for a treat with the on-site beer hall offering<br />
a host of local brews, whilst families will have their own area<br />
with face-painting, play area, inflatables, fairground rides and<br />
pony rides to keep the kids entertained. Dan Whitehead,<br />
Senior Events Executive at <strong>Uttoxeter</strong> <strong>Racecourse</strong>, says:<br />
“The response to the festival has been beyond what we could have<br />
hoped for – we’ve got some brilliant stalls and demonstrations<br />
lined up and the festival will genuinely offer something for the<br />
whole family. There’s been a huge number of enquiries coming<br />
into the racecourse regarding the festival and advance ticket sales<br />
are very pleasing – it’s been great working with the team from the<br />
Stone Food and Drink Festival on this event, whose experience has<br />
been invaluable – we just can’t wait for the big weekend now!”<br />

Miss Staffordshire at<br />

on Saturday 31 March.<br />
Gemma will now go through to<br />
the Miss England final in Leicester,<br />
in June. The winners were picked<br />
by a judging panel which included<br />
<strong>Uttoxeter</strong> <strong>Racecourse</strong> Executive<br />
Director David MacDonald and<br />
Miss England Georgia Horsley.<br />

of trees including English Oak as part of a<br />
