Charles Godfrey Leland
Charles Godfrey Leland was a native Philadelphian, born in 1824, who studied at
Princeton, Heidelberg, and the Sorbonne, where he participated in the 1848 revolution.
He traveled widely and was interested in a broad variety of subjects, ranging from
linguistics to ethnography to the industrial arts; he studied law and passed the bar in
Philadelphia, but went into journalism instead, writing for and editing several periodicals,
including the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and the Continental Monthly. He was
firmly pro-Union and wrote in defense of Lincoln and emancipation, as well as enlisting
short-term in the Union Army, where he fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was an
active force in supporting the Union cause, and helped organize the Metropolitan Fair in
New York and the Great Central Fair in Philadelphia to support the U. S. Sanitary
Commission. In 1869 he returned to Europe, where he eventually settled in London, and
took up writing as a full-time career. He returned briefly to America to found the Public
Industrial Art School of Philadelphia, which was praised by Oscar Wilde, and to be the
school’s first director. He died in Florence in 1903; his memoirs were published by his
niece, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, whom Leland had encouraged to pursue a career in
writing.
Leland’s most famous works during his lifetime were the Breitmann Ballads, a
series of poems written in the dialect of German immigrants to America, but his work on
Roma culture and the traditions of Italian witchcraft became more popular after his death,
and influenced Wicca and modern Neopaganism. He was also well-regarded as a
translator; he translated the complete works of Heinrich Heine, the famous German
journalist, satirist, and poet, as well as other German writers. The variety of subjects in
his body of work is a testament to his wide-ranging and inquiring mind.
The Collection
This collection of books, pamphlets, and ephemera by and relating to Charles
Godfrey Leland is offered for sale as a lot for $15,000. It was gathered over a period of
years by Norman Kane and cataloged by Margaret Silvers. We would like to
acknowledge the collegiality and friendship of the Philadelphia bookseller, the late
George Allen, in the amassing of the collection.
The Leland collection contains 174 items by, about, owned by, or mentioning
Leland, and has been organized into two sections. The first section contains three
autograph manuscripts of Leland and works by Leland that have been listed in BAL,
primarily in chronological order, as well as some editions and works that fit
chronologically with the BAL editions, and BAL-listed reprints and editions; the second
section contains other reprints, unlisted works and editions, and works not by Leland
which are either from his library or include mention of Leland and his works, not in
chronological order.
