Principal’s <strong>Report</strong><br />

Highlights of <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong> include exciting<br />
new academic programs, new<br />
avenues for students to develop<br />
their gifts, and growing diversity.<br />
Academic program innovation:<br />
After several years of intensive planning, <strong>Bethany</strong><br />
last year implemented various innovations in the<br />
academic program—integrating technology into<br />
the curriculum at all grade levels, increasing choice<br />
and quality of music opportunities, piloting the new<br />
mentoring program that sees each student meet<br />
regularly with a mentor teacher, and strengthening<br />
experiential education.<br />
During J-Term, middle school students spent<br />
mornings in one class and afternoons in another—<br />
hands-on classes such as experiencing pioneer life,<br />
rehearsing a play, and designing lego projects on<br />
computer. Students in grades 9-11 spent one week<br />
in the classroom exploring subjects such as forensic<br />
science, New Testament, and bicycle maintenance<br />
and cross-country touring, and the second<br />
week traveling—for example, curling and skiing in<br />
northern Michigan, experiencing Brazilian culture<br />
in Chicago, and exploring civil rights in Mississippi.<br />
Such hands-on learning engages students as well as<br />
providing academic credit.<br />
New avenues for developing students’ gifts:<br />
The heart of a <strong>Bethany</strong> education is students’ opportunity<br />
to explore and develop God-given gifts. In<br />
the new Speech and Debate Club, students gained<br />
confidence in public speaking and cultivated valuable<br />
life skills. The new musical theater group, Emmaus,<br />
integrated music, drama, and dance into an engaging<br />
learning experience for children on the theme of<br />
God’s care for us during difficult times.<br />
Growing diversity:<br />
<strong>Bethany</strong>’s diversity rose to a historic high, with<br />
nearly one-quarter of the students now being non-<br />
Caucasian. Increased diversity is due in part to a<br />

growing international presence, especially students<br />
from Anabaptist-network connections in Korea.<br />
Several students from Colegio Concordia and Colegio<br />
Alberto Schweitzer, Mennonite schools in Asunción,<br />
Paraguay, also attended <strong>Bethany</strong> for part of the<br />
year—an outgrowth of <strong>Bethany</strong>’s biennial summer<br />
language and culture trips to Paraguay. Growing<br />
diversity enriches our school community and fosters<br />
friendship with others in the global <strong>Christian</strong> family.<br />
A Word from the Board Chair<br />
—Jaime Alvarez<br />
From the board’s perspective, I’d<br />
like to highlight three important<br />
achievements from the <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>10</strong><br />
school year.<br />
• The principal and Administrative Team, with<br />
support from consultant Dick Eastop, led the faculty<br />
and board in developing a comprehensive new student<br />
recruitment plan. With the pool of eligible students<br />
in Mennonite congregations declining, the new<br />
plan emphasizes a broad network of relationships to<br />
recruit students. It also features new financial incentives<br />
designed to keep <strong>Bethany</strong> affordable.<br />
• Along with others in our community, <strong>Bethany</strong><br />
also faced adversity last year. With the economy continuing<br />
to struggle, we granted a record amount of<br />
tuition assistance, reduced staffing, and froze salaries<br />
and benefits to stretch available funds. Additionally,<br />
an ad hoc Vehicle Committee came up with recommendations<br />
for improving fleet efficiencies, and the<br />
Investment Review Committee searched for ways to<br />
improve the performance of our endowment.<br />
• As part of the board’s commitment to excellence,<br />
we commissioned the Governance Committee<br />
to develop an entirely new Board Policy<br />
Handbook—to translate into policy the board’s new<br />
focus on three areas of work: strategic, fiduciary, and<br />
generative.<br />
I conclude with heartfelt thanks to you for supporting<br />
<strong>Bethany</strong> as we continue to integrate faith<br />
and academic excellence to equip students for <strong>Christian</strong><br />
discipleship in the church and around the world.
