The Holy Family 0f Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 30, 2012
Tuesday, January 1, 2013
And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.
Tuesday this week brings the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. On other Holy Days of the year we
honor Mary in the Solemnities of her Immaculate Conception and her Assumption. But on January 1, we
pay particular attention to her human-ness, to her relationship with us.
Some pay attention by praying the rosary, by reading the first two chapters of the Gospel of Luke and by
meditating on the example of Mary’s life. Practicing the attitudes of prayer — perseverance, attention,
resignation, conviction and humility — can teach us about Mary and draw us to her Son Jesus.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops advises us on devotions to Mary:
— Luke 2:19
“As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all
creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us.
“Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is
endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is
also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime
grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because
she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved.
“Mary embraces God's will and freely chooses to cooperate with God's grace, thereby fulfilling a crucial role
in God's plan of salvation. Throughout the centuries, the Church has turned to the Blessed Virgin in order
to come closer to Christ. Many forms of piety toward the Mother of God developed that help bring us closer
to her Son. In these devotions to Mary, "while the Mother is honored, the Son, through whom all things
have their being and in whom it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell, is rightly known, loved
and glorified and . . . all His commands are observed."33 The Church honors her as the Mother of God,
looks to her as a model of perfect discipleship, and asks for her prayers to God on our behalf.”
Many Thanks to Many Folks
Many thanks go to all who’ve contributed to preparing
the church for Christmas and given of themselves to
celebrate the Masses with joy! We appreciate the
contributions of flowersand the band of brothers and
sisters who went all out this year in decorating. They
restored the crêche and made everything ready for
Christ’s birth. And much appreciation to all liturgical
ministers: musicians, ushers, lectors, sacristans, altar
servers and Eucharistic ministers.
We especially thank our priests for their untiring
ministry to us and their dedication to God.
And thanks to you, the Assembly of believers, whose
participation in the Mass and in the parish is to the
glory of God, who is born in our hearts every day.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Parish December 30, 2012
One morning last week when the
temperature dropped and we finally got some snow,
slow traffic delayed the director’s arrival at the pantry.
Unable to open the pantry door, the morning shift’s
volunteers and patrons made themselves comfortable
next door at Rancho Grande cafe (formerly El Rey),
enjoying coffee and conversation until she arrived. It’s
one example of the friendly spirit that characterizes
Harvest of Hope, which, in its first seven months of
operation, has developed a reputation for efficiency,
cooperation and community, thanks to your support in
food donations and volunteers.
Canned goods are in good supply this week. What the
pantry can use are things like jelly, honey, crackers
and snack items. And cereal (hot & cold) is always in
demand. Please drop off your donations at the pantry,
2960 Valmont, 8:30 to 10:30 am or 1 to 3 pm, Monday
through Saturday, or bring them to the Parish Center.
Your contributions are very much appreciated.
Vigil Candles: Candles approved for use in the
church’s devotional niches are for sale in the Sacristy
