<strong>Simple</strong>, <strong>Compound</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Complex</strong> <strong>Sentences</strong><br />

<strong>Simple</strong> <strong>Sentences</strong>:<br />

These are sentences with a single independent clause.<br />

Example: Angel sat on wet paint.<br />

Even if a sentence has a compound subject or verb (or both), it is still considered simple.<br />

Example: Angel <strong>and</strong> Liesel sat on wet paint. (compound subject; simple sentence)<br />

Example: Angel <strong>and</strong> Liesel sat in wet paint <strong>and</strong> rolled around. (compound subject <strong>and</strong> verb; simple)<br />

A sentence is still considered simple even when it includes a preceding phrase.<br />

Example: After the game, the team scarfed down pizza <strong>and</strong> fell out of their seats.<br />

<strong>Compound</strong> <strong>Sentences</strong>:<br />

These are sentences with more than one independent clause. The clauses are often separated<br />

with a comma <strong>and</strong> a coordinating conjunction (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So—FANBOYS)<br />

Example: I tried to speak English, but my friend wanted to speak Spanish.<br />

Example: My brother flew to Guatemala to learn Spanish, but I stayed in the U.S. to keep learning<br />

English.<br />

<strong>Complex</strong> <strong>Sentences</strong>:<br />

These are sentences which contain an independent clause <strong>and</strong> one or more dependent clauses.<br />

A dependent clause contains a subject <strong>and</strong> verb but cannot st<strong>and</strong> alone.<br />

Example: When I went to the beach<br />

Example: After we ate Imos pizza<br />

Example: Who I met in the checkout lane at Global Food Market<br />

When the above phrases are attached to an independent clause, the sentence become complex.<br />

Example: The wind almost blew me over when I went to the beach.<br />

Example: Gladys fell out of her chair after she ate Imos pizza.<br />

Example: My great aunt Bertha, who I met in the checkout lane at Global Food Market, is<br />

Practice: : Take a minute to make up three complex sentences in your notes. Decide whether each<br />

sentence is simple, compound, or complex.<br />

1: Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880 <strong>and</strong> died in 1968.<br />
