In 1999 at 48 years-of-age, Rita Gore was in the
best shape of her life when she was diagnosed
with breast cancer. After a lumpectomy, surgery
and radiation, she wondered when she could
begin doing weights again.
It was a time before the benefits of exercise for
women with breast cancer were known and the
doctor told her that her arm would never be
the same. Gore said, “Initially I felt fragile and
worried whether I would be able to ever exercise
like I used to.”
YMCA connections and initiatives helped her find
confidence, strength and motivation to become
well again. Gore joined Sistership Dragon Boat
racing team which trains at the Eau Claire YMCA.
The strength and conviction shown by fellow
teammates paired with encouragement and good
instruction from YMCA staff, helped her to gain
skills and confidence. “Both organizations have
allowed me to find my inner warrior and not let
one doctor’s comment prevent me from safely
resuming exercise ,” Gore stated.
Another opportunity came when CBC partnered
with the YMCA to offer the Live Right Now initiative.
It was based on the idea that small steps can help
people remain active. Gore felt right at home and
a strong connection to YMCA grew.
Gore appreciated that everyone is welcome at the
YMCA regardless of socioeconomic circumstances.

It was a perfect fit with her personal values.
She wanted to give back and discovered volunteer
opportunities. She fundraised for the YMCA Strong
Kids Campaign to help children who cannot
afford the cost of programs or membership and
acted as course marshal for YMCA Camp Chief
Hector’s Family Fun Run.
These days, Gore has settled into a nice routine.
She walks to the Eau Claire YMCA because it
provides peaceful time to reflect. At the YMCA,
she enjoys a workout that includes the elliptical,
weight lifting, cycling, rowing and stretching.
Now she encourages others to adopt a healthy
and active lifestyle. Incorporating writing skills
and her passion for exercise, she writes about
health and wellness topics for the YMCA and
various publications. With the support of the YMCA
her journey has come full circle and extends well
beyond into the community.
Her advice to others “Be open to trying new
things and find a way to start. You don’t have to
be an elite athlete. Get help to develop a routine
and know that you can be your own superstar.”
Gore has truly found a place to belong, an ideal
environment to learn and grow, the support to
thrive, and opportunities to lead others to find a
path to health and wellness.
