Cookie’s Crumbs

Warmer weather is just around the corner. It is time to 

get our cars uncovered and back on the road for some 

good times ahead. SVR have a great summer planned, 

so check the monthly calendar for some exciting new 

events that have been planned just for you. 

Fat’s had a full house for the May 12th dinner 

meeting. Dinner was delicious and wine was superb. 

Thank you Carl Keinert from Boeger Winery for being 

our guest speaker and letting us try some of their 

wines with dinner. I also want to thank Collin Fat for 

arranging the delicious dinner for our SVR members. 

This dinner was quite a success thanks to Collin Fat 

and Fat’s Asia Bistro & Dim Sum Bar in Folsom. 

A Zone 7 Concours Judging School was held April 

17th at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. Mark Gersh our 

Zone 7 Concours chair person taught the fundmentals 

of being a Concours Judge. Thanks to instructors 

Kim Nelson, Jim McMahan, Joe Schumacher, Tom 

Sansone, Tom Sisson and Kent Brandon for bringing 

their cars out to explain about cleaning techniques 

they perform to win at Concours events. David 

Yamada with Vepa was there to explain detailing tips 

and the class also had a hands on detailing session. 

A special thanks to Niello and Jim Webber for having 

coffee and donuts for the group and for letting us use 

their conference room and bay for the day. 

Don’t forget the Poker Run May 16th. Jerry has put 

together a great tour and I have arranged lunch for 

$13.00. One of the stops is Hooverville Orchards, 

Mrs. Hoover will have her preserves and frozen pies 

for sale. Hooverville Orchard also has beautiful white 

Peacocks to see. Please don’t forget to RSVP for the 

Poker Run and Lunch 916-988-6534. 

June 5th is the Second Annual Rib Cook-off. Susan 

Duvall-Serota and David Hoffman have planned on 

providing a great evening with great food. With all 

the good cooks in the club you don’t want to miss this

30 Years Ago (May 1980) 

SVR member Randy Blaesi arranged the May 2 Potluck dinner 

meeting at the Nepenthe Clubhouse in Campus Commons, 

and Connie Farlinger wrote the follow-up piece about the 

event for THE DRIFTER. Dave and Dolores Johnson, the 

creators of SVR’s stuffed “Clarence, the Crab,” told Connie 

how Dolores used an Alaska king crab from a Japanese fish 

market as a model for Clarence. Fred and Nancy Myeron 

were there and Fred talked about his ‘58 Speedster he thought 

was somewhere in his backyard (big lot and the grass is really 

high). Someone brought a 5-foot loaf of French bread. But, 

the special feature of the evening was the unveiling of the 

new, and improved, industrial version of the SVR Dummkopf 

award -- you know, the one with the golden digit. Crafted by 

Dwight Mitchell with spiritual advice from wife, Linda, this 

new piece of art caused Sally Weddle and other women with 

tender sensitivities to blush at the phallic suggestion of its 

composition. Never-the-less, Jim and Shirlee Chandler became 

the first recipients of the new version of SVR’s most talked 

about award because of their antics during the April 27th 

Historic Sacramento Tour. Allen Weddle ran a close second for 

running his Porsche over the cash box at the autocross during 

CRAB NINE -- beyond straightening. 

May 16, 1980 -- Remember that date! It’s the date Harvey Cain 

did his first stint as a rallymaster. It was an open, Friday night 

event he named, “Beginner’s Luck.” As he said in his post-event 

piece for THE DRIFTER, “Well, it took more than luck to 

do well on this Friday night rally. 52 cars of assorted makes 

attempted to find my 4 checkpoints. . .only 26 car were good 

enough to find all four.” Oh-ooh -- but, Harvey kept going, 

“75 percent of the participants were beginners or novices and 

probably did not even know what the general instructions 

were. So they went on a rally and got lost. To those people I 

apologize.” With half the field hopelessly and perhaps forever

lost in the dark and unfamiliar countryside near Courtland, 

Hood, Pt. Pleasant, or Freeport (even the sweep-car couldn’t 

find ‘em), other more experienced SVR rallyists and part of 

the remaining 25 percent, “I don’t need no stinkin’ generals,” 

group (Mike and Vicki Willis, Ray and Sara Clements, and 

George and Nona Morley) made it to all four checkpoints and 

the finish to pick-up event trophies. As for the rallymaster job, 

Harvey opined in THE DRIFTER that he’d never do it again. 


SVR’s May 18 event in the Zone 7 rally series, “Snake in the 

grass, too,” chaired by Rik Larson, was advertised as a “simple, 

yet warm and gentle time and distance rally.” Right. Thirtythree 

rally teams participated and while they might have 

thought it was “warm and gentle,” they sure didn’t think it 

was “simple.” The rally course was only 90 minutes long and 

with only three checkpoints. But, Rik Larson, the master of 

misdirection, had the first checkpoint a mere 5 minutes from 

the odometer check, and the second leg was less than nine 

minutes long. Soooo, the third leg was a huge confidence test 

finally ending with the third and last checkpoint. Ah-Hah, now 

get this: Larson’s event occurred almost exactly on the 10th 

Anniversary (plus two days) of Harvey Cain’s star-crossed 1980 

“Beginner’s Luck” rally described immediately above. In this 

(Larson’s) rally, SVR’s team of J. Toney and Helen Ashuckian, 

universally recognized as the world’s best rally team, finished 

with a score of 196 penalty points and LAST in the six-car 

Expert Unequipped class. And, who finished fourth in the 

same class and was the best-finishing SVR team, you ask Yes, 

none other than Harvey and Connie Cain with a score of 107 

points. So, when it comes to masters of misdirection, it takes 

one to know one. 

second-place award in Street Improved (women) class after 

experiencing only a handful of autocross events (but she had

SVR’s May 21 Zone 7 Concours, chaired by newly-wed 

Kent Brandon, was held at Niello Porsche in Rocklin. When 

judging began, 22 Porsches (including 16 from SVR) were 

awaiting critical inspection by Zone 7 judges: six 356s, one 

914, one 944, one Boxster, and thirteen 911s. The 16 SVR 

folks took home 12 trophies, too: 6 firsts, 4 seconds, and two 

thirds. SVR competitors included Larry Dunn, Jerry Kiliany, 

Mia Marvell, Mark Smedley, Ray Johansen, Greg Keith, Phil 

Lawrence, Lowell Irwin, Tim Fleming, Arnold Zeiderman, 

Alan Nishimoto, Joe Pitta, Jason Daley, Dennis Stettner, Terry 

Rogers, and Pat Leavitt. Then, there was this new-member, 

Kim Nelson, who took first in the 911 full concours class. To 

top off a great day, Mike Ambrozewicz sold all his hamburgers 

thus adding to the SVR autocross trailer fund. 

Allen and Dolores Weddle’s May 20 Gold Country Tour took 

Porsches through the golden foothills to The Holbrooke in 

Grass Valley’s Grand Hotel for an elegant champagne brunch. 

Instead of the expected hot temperatures, it was raining, 

but that didn’t dampen enthusiasm, and they came from all 

corners -- the McIntyres from Twain Harte, the Cains from 

San Francisco, the Crosses from Pleasant Hill, the Leggetts 

from Concord, and Meuniers from Mokelumne Hill. Some of 

the locals were Marv and Marie Smith in his recently re-built 

911T, the Bitters, Greens, Hesses, Lunbacks, Boecks, Pearts, 

Wilsons, and prospective member Peggy Bengs. Thirty-two 

cars, in all. Champagne door prizes (Korbel, Piper Sonoma, 

and Krug) went to the Clements, Kroetzs, and Hirsts. 


Fifty-six drivers (23 from SVR) competed in SVR’s May 6 Zone 

7 Autocross at Mather Field. SVR had 12 class-winning drivers 

plus several who were new, or infrequent, autocross competitors 

(Arnold Ramirez, Gloria Nelson, Don Wigglesworth, Howard 

Ross, Fred Haines, Dennis Stettner, and Phil Lawrence). Tania 

and Glen Brooksby each finished first in class with Bob Peake 

and Bill Winkler coming in second and third in the Street 

Improved (Men) class. De’Nai Miller earned a very impressive

Marv Smith, October 31, 1918 - April 17, 2010 

Marvin “Marv” Smith, age 91, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, in Roseville from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. 

He is survived and dearly loved by his wife of 64 years, Marie Smith, and his son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Vicki 

Smith of Chico, CA. Marv’s profession was that of a civil engineer working for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. 

Marv and Marie joined Sacramento Valley Region, Porsche Club of America 43 years ago, in July of 1967, not long after 

purchasing a white 1966 Porsche 912 coupe. They lived in Willows, CA, at the time. Later, while living in Roseville, CA, they 

acquired the car familiar to most SVR members, a beautiful tangerine 1972 Porsche 911T coupe equipped with gold BBS 

wheels. 

Marv loved the club, partly because of all the wonderful associations he was able to make, but also because it gave him 

many opportunities to drive his Porsche. He and Marie seemingly never missed a tour, especially a wine tour, and, once he 

got his 911, he best liked running toward the rear of the group and keeping up with the club’s “hot-shoes.” Marv was a very 

good driver. For the last several years, the 911 has been maintained by son, Steven, who has meticulously followed his dad’s 

high-standards of preparation and care. 

A very large share of the funds raised over the years for SVR charities came from bids for wooden items (e.g., mushrooms, 

bowls, plates, boxes) which Marv made and donated for the auction. Many times these creations 

featured exotic and difficult-to-work-with woods. And, these items always commanded majormoney. 

From the late 1960s through the ‘70s, many of SVR’s annual awards were wooden 

creations also tooled by Marv in his wood shop at home. Many SVR members count themselves 

fortunate to have received one of Marv’s creations. 

Marv Smith served on the SVR board of directors in 1970 as Technical Chair, 1973 as Vice 

President, and 1978 as Activities Chair. 

Marv served his country with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a proud member of that 

generation. 

We will miss Marv.

Thunderhill Raceway Observers 

Track Day - April 23, 2010

This was my first outing with SVR 

as a new member. I had no idea 

what to expect or what was expected 

of me. I have been interested in 

auto racing for many years and was 

now interested in driving instead of 

just being a spectator. I think I was 

motivated to go and see what track 

driving was all about right after I 

purchased my Porsche. 

The day was a perfect, bright sunny 

day with temperatures in the mid 

70's. The facilities at Thunderhill are 

excellent, the staff friendly and courteous. 

We went into the club house, 

where Lee Deter and Doug Klein reviewed 

the schedule for the day. We 

were introduced to Frederick Rauch 

who described some of the facilities 

and gave a run down of the track. 

After this introduction, the Track- 

Masters novice run group came in 

for a download, and we got to listen 

in. The instructor went into details 

of what he had noticed on the track 

and instructed the drivers on how 

to perform on the track better and 

safer. After the drivers left, we stayed 

and were given detailed instructions 

on how to drive Thunderhill, very 

cool! 

Next, we went on a ride-along with 

TrackMasters instructors as our drivers. 

Now, as I said, I have watched 

auto racing for years, but what happened 

next was truly a dream come 

true. We put on our helmets and 

climbed into the cars, belted up and 

went on a three lap run. The experience 

was great. I initially thought I 

would be nervous about going so fast 

and approaching the corners, braking 

and accelerating, but that feeling 

quickly turned into one of "how 

would I approach this corner, or 

when would I brake." I was intently 

interested in the driver's techniques 

and how it affected the handling dynamics 

of the car, particularly when 

we were approaching and leaving the 

15 turns of Thunderhill. The experience 

was fantastic! 

After lunch, we assembled our cars 

and went out on the track for a 

slow speed two lap Porsche Parade, 

which was very cool as it gave us all 

a chance to actually drive on a race 

track (albeit at 35mph!). 

Lee and Doug assembled us for the 

last time at the club house and they 

gave us details as to what to have 

and bring to a Drivers Education 

training. They covered tires, brakes, 

helmets, and other gear to help make 

your day at DE safe and enjoyable. 

In the latter part of the day, I and 

two other members went on a turn 

by turn tour with Doug. He explained 

how to drive the turns and 

his own experiences at Thunderhill. 

It was a wonderful, educational, and 

memorable day. Thanks to Lee Deter 

and Doug Klein for providing such a 

wonderful and event filled day. They 

were great. Thanks also to Frederick 

Rauch, Thunderhill and TrackMasters, 

who welcomed us as if we were 

old friends and their facility is top 

rate. 

Oh, and by the way, I have already 

registered with TrackMasters and 

look forward to my first day on the 

track. After all, that's what Porches 

are built for!

SVR’s Zone Concours Weekend at Niello Porsche - June 26th and 27th

You won’t want to miss the activities planned for this weekend! To start, on Saturday, June 26th we have two tours 

planned. Jeff Kinder will be heading up one tour and will be leaving from Niello Porsche at 9:00am. Jeff plans on 

heading up through the back roads to the Grass Valley area. Tom Sisson will be leading the second tour which will 

leave at 9:00am from Starbucks in ElDorado Hills. Tom plans on touring the countryside to Perry Creek Winery for 

lunch and some wine tasting. 

The next activity planned for the day will start at 3:00pm and will be test drives of new Porsches courtesy of Niello 

Porsche. Cookie Anderson is coordinating this activity and sign-up sheets will be going out via email. We will conclude 

Saturday’s activities starting at 6:00pm with a wonderful dinner in the showroom at Niello Porsche. Cost for 

the dinner will be $15.00 per person and will include Tri-tip, Macaroni Salad, Caesar Salad, desert and coffee and soft 

drink. You can also BYOB. We will also have Darrell Bailey and Paul Frame as guest speakers talking about their 3rd 

place finish in their 1957 356 twin plug in the 2009 La Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico. 

Sunday’s Zone Concours will start with registration between 7:00 and 9:00 am and judging starting at 9:30. Entry 

fee is $25.00 and there is no cost for “display only” Porsches. This year’s feature Porsche model will be the 912 and 

I’m sure that we’ll fill Niello’s service area with many beautiful examples. Niello will also be offering a 20% discount 

to Club Members on both Saturday and Sunday on all Porsche Selections items – both in-stock and special order. A 

BBQ lunch will also be available for $7.00 and will include your choice of Hamburger or Polish Dog, Potato Salad, 

chips, cookie and soft drink. 

So, we’ve got a lot going on this weekend and you can participate in all the activities of just what fits into your schedule. 

Come on out and talk with your SVR friends while checking out all the beautiful cars.

• The museum wants e-mail address for our members our

• Jeff Kinder went last weekend to the Museum and he had

• Motion made and seconded that if the museum will not 

accept PCA cards for admittance, that we will drop our 

membership and ask for our money back. Also we would 

not participate in the Christmas Tree decorating at their 

place in November.

• We have not had a response to the blast or web notice 

regarding the vacant editor position also want to 

keep the ‘how to contact’ membership item in each

predict attendees Also discussion about the use of Mather 

for AX. Discussion (e-mail from Peake) regarding how 

SCCA has events scheduled out there this year. Mike Willis 

considering proposal from Bob Peake (whether to do an 

event at Mather in June or not). 

Concours – Brandon (not present) 

Cookie reported that the Concours in June is all set. Possible 

driving of cars, tours, etc. 

Rally – Helen Ashuckian 

Parent Kid Great Search discovery tour (scheduled for August 

7th) --- discussion of how event was run last year. Question 

raised about kids in the cars per 2010 PCA Insurance 

requirements. Budget approved for the Parent Kid Great 

Search discovery tour. 

Advertising (Mike Willis): Schatz and Krum ad to be 

dropped. 

Drifter (Rik Larson): The April DRIFTER is at the printer. 

Expect to pick up the printed copy on Friday and mail 

to subscribers. The online version was posted to the web 

site earlier in the week. JR will do the May issue as well. 

Almost all of the event information (flyers) have already 

been received. Expect to have all of the information by this 

weekend so that work can begin on the May issue. 

Financial Report (Phil Wood): Books are current, report 

already sent out to board. Taxes have been filed (16 pages 

worth – thanks for the blessing by Barbara McCrory). We 

will do quarterly tax payments this year. 

New Member Group (Lee and Dan): Dan ran the Hints 

and Tips: Car Care session. Very good turnout. Several new 

members have signed up for the Thunderhill Tour on April 

23rd and also the Finnon Reservoir Tour on May 8th. Next 

NMG event is the Thunderhill Tour on April 23rd. 

Goodie Store (Cookie Anderson): Nothing to report. 

Membership Director (Doug Klein): There are 559 regular 

members, 456 affiliate members and 6 dual members for a 

total of 1,021 members, a decrease of 6 regular members and 

5 affiliate members since last month. New form developed 

for membership badges and DRIFTER subscriptions.

upcoming dinner chairs. All is OK. Helen to chair the 

November dinner at the Italian Restaurant in Town and 

Country Village. Date has not yet been determined. Muffler 

tour budget (April 24) is approved. 

Webmaster (John Murphy): Web is good. Suggested that 

event chairs use the derPorsche Talk forum as an additional 

vehicle to post information about their events. Larry Wilson 

sent John a list of past DRIFTER editors (becoming a lost 

art). 

Vice President (Rik Larson): Event chairs have been very 

cooperative in providing information needed to request 

insurance. Several have also provided post-event review 

articles for the DRIFTER. Will continue to typically order 

the insurance for the upcoming events about 30 days in 

advance. 

Past President (Mike Willis): No report. 

President (Cookie Anderson): PCA National is discussing 

increase the membership dues. Cookie will send the 

‘presentation’ to board members so that they can review 

before making a decision to forward to the Zone 7 

Representative, Sharon Neidel.

Thank you for giving me the oportunity to be 

the Editor of the SVR drifter. I have been an 

auto enthusiast for many years; ever since riding 

in the back of a 1966 XKE Roadster. I have 

had everything from Triumph’s, Alfa Romeo’s,

Orient Red 911 Carrera. I will be working

A New Member Group Event Sunday, May 30 

Drive one of the most enjoyable Porsche roads in Northern California, while experiencing the spectacular scenery of 

the Yuba River Canyon. 

Leaving Niello’s, we’ll make quick work of the flatlands and foothills, zipping up I-80 to Colfax and Nevada City, 

where the real fun starts. Highway 49, climbing the twisting gorge of the Yuba River, through Downieville and 

Sierra City, is a Porsche pilot’s delight. Designated a Scenic Byway, it's one of most beautiful mountain roads in 

California. 

The historic Kentucky Mine and Museum provides a welcoming and shady lunch 

spot, and contains a very rare operating stamp mill. After pausing for a photo-op of 

the magnificent 8,600 foot Sierra Buttes, we'll stop in Truckee for libations before 

returning home. Bring a lunch and drinks. 

Meet at Niello Porsche, 4525 Granite Drive, Rocklin. Google for directions. Registration 

8:00. 

Driver’s meeting 8:20. Depart 8:30 sharp. Fee. $5 per car, cash or one Fun Buck
