Beauty and the Bastard
[ T y t t ö s i n ä o l e t t ä h t i ]
Nelli, a girl who’s been subdued by praise, is on her way to medical school if her parents can help
it, even though she daydreams about a career as a singer. If only she could come up with a demo
that she could use to show her talent to the record companies.
Sune, a beaten down kid from a rough area, is a talented hip hop DJ who’s afraid of women.
To show his friends otherwise, he makes a bet that he can get Nelli to sleep with him. His friends
don’t believe a beauty like her would even spit Sune’s way. But Nelli sees an opportunity to get
herself a free demo.
As they use each other, they fall for each other. There’s a lot of road to cover to meet halfway.
The lady needs to learn to stop trying to please everyone. The tramp needs to learn to observe
others in life as well as in art. Sune’s friends have a barrel of fun with what goes on. But Nelli’s
boyfriend and Isukki aren’t at all pleased.
Taking your own path is always a step into emptiness.
Dome Karukoski
Dome Karukoski is a 28-year-old first-time director.
Beauty and the Bastard is his thesis work for the filmmaking
FC Venus
FC Venus is a modern comedy about women and men, and the differences between the two.
The main characters in the film are Anna and Pete, a couple in their late twenties who live
happily together in Helsinki. Pete plays football on a team called FC HeMan, in the lowest possible
league. The team sucks, but its players still play, watch, and live football. Anna hates the whole
sport, but doesn’t interfere with Pete’s hobby because she loves him.
Anna’s love for Pete is put to the test when she finds out to her shock that Pete has ordered tickets
with his teammates to the Football World Cup in Germany, putting his team first and her second.
In a fit of anger, Anna ends up making a bet with Pete: She puts together a team from the wives
and girlfriends of the FC HeMan players and challenges the men to a match at the end of the summer.
If the women win, the men will have to give up football. If the men win, the women will never
again give the men a hard time about their hobby.
Thus is the women’s team FC Venus formed. The film follows the women during one summer
on their quest towards the football match to end all football matches.
It’s his game but her rules.
Joona Tena
FC Venus is directed by Joona Tena, and the
film marks his feature film debut. Tena has,
however, directed several acclaimed and award
winning TV dramas and short films including
The Good Ship (Onnellisten laiva, 2004) and
Kivi ja Kilpi (2003 and 2001).

Game Over
Game Over – Life begins on Friday.
18-year-old Kimi graduates from high school. He is going to show the world that he can be richer
and more successful than his extremely successful dad.
Kimi is the coach of a junior floorball team. Riku, H.P. and Valtteri are his star players. Kimi
makes a deal with the charismatic Pertti Ilola to sponsor the floorball championship finals. When
Kimi realises that Pertti is a failed fraudster and is using Kimi to get a foot inside the corporate
world of his dad, Kimi decides to take his revenge. He plans to lure Pertti to his parents’ weekend
cottage and steal the briefcase stuffed with cash that Pertti always carries with him, the perfect
crime since Pertti would never report the theft of money he has embezzled. H.P., Valtteri and
Riku happily agree to help Kimi. To them it’s just a game like many other games that Kimi has
organised before. Nothing could go wrong. But this time, everything does.
Detective Inspector Karoliina Ranta has no difficulty following the sloppy trail of clues that
leads to the four boys. The young woman uncovers the strong bond of friendship between the four
boys who have all been left to grow up “on their own.” Desperate to be accepted and praised,
Kimi turns to Ranta. Finally, in his own inimitable way, Kimi accepts that he is faced with a choice
and that he must make a decision. Even if it is for all the wrong reasons.
Before the ultimate fight between good and evil, he should not fall in love.
Jade Warrior, the first Finnish Kung Fu film, combines Finnish and Chinese mythologies in
one film. Jade Warrior is an homage to the Kung Fu genre strongly spiced with a truly original
approach to the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Like Kalevala, Jade Warrior is a pure melodrama,
a story about Kalevala’s greatest hero.
Thousands of years ago in ancient China, a love-struck master swordsman fights against his
destiny. He wants another chance to be reunited with his loved one, and he gets that chance, in a
faraway place and a faraway time, in the cold north, in modern Finland.
Jade Warrior is set in ancient China during the early iron age and present day Finland. The
past is feeding the story in the present day, slowly revealing our warrior, his true origins, his
superior skills and his destiny.
Lights in the Dusk
[ L a i t a k a u p u n g i n v a l o t ]
Lights in the Dusk concludes the trilogy that started with Drifting Clouds (Kauas pilvet karkaavat,
1996) and continued with The Man Without a Past (Mies vailla menneisyyttä, 2002). Where the
trilogy’s first film was about unemployment and the second about homelessness, the theme of
Lights in the Dusk is loneliness.
Like Chaplin’s little tramp, the protagonist, a man named Koistinen, searches the hard world
for a small crack through which he could crawl in, but both his fellow beings and the faceless
apparatus of the society see it their business to crush his modest hopes, one after another.
Criminal elements exploit his longing for love and his position as a night watchman in a robbery
they pull off, leaving Koistinen to face the consequences. This is done with the help of the
most callous woman in the history of cinema since Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s All About Eve (1950).
As a result Koistinen loses his job, his freedom and his dreams.
Luckily for our protagonist, the author of the film has a reputation of being a soft-hearted old
man, so we can assume there is a spark of hope illuminating the final scene.
Man Exposed (working title)
[ R i i s u t t u m i e s ]
Man Exposed is a comedy of a forty-year-old priest, Pitkänen, who considers himself a rebel. In
fact, the only signs of his rebellion are his ponytail and the boots he wears under his priest
vestments. He is stuck on the intermediate level in the church hierarchy, a rank which is too
low for his wife’s family, but too high for his best friends. One Sunday, after an overdone rebellious
sermon, the bishop wants to meet Pitkänen. He thinks he’s in deep shit, but the bishop
wants him to take on the bishop’s office. “Modern times need a modern bishop. A Rock Bishop!”
Pitkänen grabs the oppurtunity, but first he has to sell all his ideals in order to realise them. And
the worst thing is that he has no idea that his wife is plotting with the bishop behind his back for
his promotion.
hits in Finland. In 2003, he directed the TV series Leavings
(Irtiottoja) which received Venla prizes and was praised by critics.
His third feature Frozen Land (Paha maa, 2005) won the main prize
at the Gothenburg Film Festival 2005 and the Jury Prize at the
Moscow Film Festival and received an award from the Church of
Sweden. Louhimies was named Director of the Year in 2004.

Matti – Hell Is for Heroes
[ M a t t i ]
Motto: Life is the best time for a man. A tragicomedy based on the unreal life of a real person.
The famous ski-jumper Matti Nykänen won everything possible during his career – and more:
4 Olympic gold medals, 7 World Championship titles, 4 World Cup tour championships and 46
World Cup circuit victories. Once his career as a professional athlete ended, however, the other
side of his personality emerged into public view in all of its vulgarity. Wherever he roams, drama
and catastrophe dog his footsteps. And everything is exposed in the headlines the next day…
Matti – Hell Is for Heroes is a drama feature based on a true story about a man who loves skijumping
so much that he rises to the top of his game and becomes the best in the world. But although
he can fly like an eagle, his life is littered with crash-landings. He stumbles, falls, and miraculously
gets back to his feet – ready to tackle yet another doomed and foolhardy stunt jump.
His road from worshipped athlete and national hero to tabloid laughing stock is basically a
tragic story. But not even Matti Nykänen himself can – or will – deny the comic aspects of his
unfortunate mishaps. “I have often wished that I was an average joe – and people would treat me
as one. But I guess that I set my goals above average in my athletic life. And I guess I will have to
see that role to the end.” (Matti Nykänen)
Aleksi Mäkelä
Aleksi Mäkelä (born 1969) has directed several hugely
popular films, many of them produced by Markus Selin.
Matti – Hell Is for Heroes is Mäkelä’s seventh feature film.
His previous works include Vares (2004), Bad Boys –
A True Story (Pahat pojat, 2003), The South (Lomalla, 2000)
and The Tough Ones (Häjyt, 1999).

Mother of Mine
[ Ä i d e i s t ä p a r h a i n ]
This is a story about a small boy who had two mothers and yet had none. In 1943, in a war-torn
Finland, 9-year-old Eero’s father is killed on the front. Eero’s mother makes the painful decision
to send her only child to safety in neutral Sweden.
In Sweden, Eero’s foster mother, Signe, welcomes him to her home but not to her heart. Eero
doesn’t speak any Swedish and feels unwelcome in his foster family while missing his mother
terribly. All the long-awaited letters from his mother are addressed to Signe, not to him. One day
Eero accidentally discovers a letter which he never was supposed to read.
During the Second World War over 70,000 war children were sent from Finland to Sweden,
Denmark and Norway in the biggest evacuation of children ever undertaken in the world. Mother
of Mine, by award-winning director Klaus Härö is the first feature-length film ever made about the
fate of an individual war child.
Klaus Härö
Director Klaus Härö made his claim to fame
after his debut film Elina (Näkymätön Elina, 2002).
The film won over 30 Finnish and international film
awards, and was Finland’s Oscar nominee for 2003.
Mother of Mine is Härö’s second feature film. Born in
Mystery of the Wolf
[ S u d e n a r v o i t u s ]
12-year-old Salla loves nature and enjoys the wilderness where she feels at home. She lives with
her adopted parents in a small village where her father works as a policeman. One day Salla’s
biological mother Laila returns to the village after a ten-year absence, upsetting the inhabitants
and even scaring many of them.
The adventure starts when Salla rescues two wolf-cubs from poachers. Though an endangered
species, wolves are a threat to the local livelihood, reindeer husbandry. The hiding and rescuing
of the cubs from the poacher Venesmaa becomes a mission during which Salla has to trust her
instincts, her best friend and even her long lost mother.
Mystery of the Wolf is also a story about how Salla faces her own past. Besides blood ties,
Salla and Laila are united by their mysterious connection with nature and animals. In spite of her
youth, Salla has to brave difficulties and make decisions that challenge the community and that
simultaneously force her to define her own relationship with her two mothers. Mystery of the Wolf
is a family film, an exciting adventure in the wilderness of the Finnish Lapland.
The Prince of Soap
[ S a i p p u a p r i n s s i ]
Ilene is a broke amateur actor who, through a series of misunderstandings, ends up working on
the story team of a soap opera. At the cast and crew party, Ilene gets to know and falls for the star
of the show, Kevin, who plays a fire fighter named Andy. But Kevin isn’t single, so nothing happens
between them. Ilene begins writing scenes for Andy and uses the script as a tool for seduction.
But the show’s producer, Rachel, intervenes. It turns out that she is the one who has a relationship
with Kevin (even though Rachel is married). The women lock horns in a manic fight for the
soul of Kevin/Andy using the show’s scripts. As a by-product of the fight, some of the best scripts
ever produced for the show are being written and Rachel is forced to admit that Ilene is a very
talented storyteller.
Kevin is caught in the middle of such a vicious game that he begins to lose his grip on reality
and begins to think that he is Andy. He starts living on the set as if it were his home, and is no longer
able to differentiate the show from real life. Rachel and Ilene’s struggle climaxes in the season’s
final episode, which is aired live. Both Rachel and Ilene are dressed for roles and placed in front
of the cameras. It’s clear that one of the characters will die in this episode, but who will it be
Shadow of the Eagle
[ K a k s i p ä i s e n k o t k a n v a r j o s s a ]
Shadow of the Eagle, directed by Timo Koivusalo, is set in the early 20th century at a time when
Finland was a grand duchy under the oppressive rule of Russia, and Tsar Nicholas II began to
heavy-handedly Russianise Finland’s government and people. Freedom of speech was restricted
and newspapers were censored. Government officials who were opposed to the ruler were exiled
and replaced with persons loyal to the Tsar. The film tells the story of a young poet who becomes
a symbol for the Finnish nation’s dreams of independence. The poet is forced to go underground
because of his writings that strongly oppose Russianisation. Shadow of the Eagle is a story about
a small nation’s determination, and whose silent strength can make possible the impossible. It is
a period drama with its spoken lines, but music also plays an important role in dramaturgy and
advancing the plot.
Timo Koivusalo
Timo Koivusalo’s latest films
include Sibelius (2003),
The Rose of a Rascal (Rentun ruusu, 2001)
and The Swan and the Wanderer
(Kulkuri ja joutsen, 1999).

Unna and Nuuk
[ U n n a j a N u u k ]
One day 11-year-old Unna feels a stab of pain in her chest – she senses that her beloved Granddad
is in danger. Unna calls her grandfather, who has had a case of illness, and saves his life. At the
hospital Unna’s grandfather reveals that Unna has shaman blood in her veins and that the gift to
heal has been passed on to her. Unna is the only person Granddad can turn to for help.
Granddad tells Unna where to find the shaman’s book and magic drum. When beaten three
times, the drum will move its owner to another time and place, and so begins Unna’s adventure in
the Finnish Stone Age. Here the recently immigrated hammer axe people kidnap Unna and Nuuk,
the son of the original tribe’s shaman. Unna has met Nuuk in the woods while looking for a cure
for her grandfather. Unna and Nuuk escape from their captors, and trek through the wilderness
towards Nuuk’s home village. During their adventure Unna must get to know Nuuk, but finding a
common language proves quite a challenge. Unna learns to survive in the Stone Age, but has yet to
find a cure for her Granddad so that she can return home from the age of her ancestors.
Valo
Valo is a story about smart and brave children. Nine-year-old boy Valo and his friend Ville establish
Abdi (15), Nasteho (11), and Bisharo (9) are refugees of the civil war in Somalia. In the wood
outside their suburban block of flats, they meet a Finnish girl Julia (13) and her younger siblings.
They all are ordinary children but outcasts in their own way. The games they play reflect the
Anni from Paanajärvi
[ P a a n a j ä r v e n A n n i ]
For six years, the Kemijoki-river of Viena has led Lasse Naukkarinen to follow the fate of a unique
Karelian village in northwest Russia. The film follows the restoration and revival of the traditional
village of Paanajärvi through the eyes of Anni Popova, the soul of the village.
The threat of the village submerging in the reservoir of the Valkeakoski power plant has
haunted Anni and the villagers for over forty years. Ten years ago in response to the threat, the
Finnish Juminkeko Foundation began implementing measures to save the village. The Paanajärvi
village was accepted on the list of the hundred most endangered cultural sites in the world which,
for example, includes the ruins of Pompeii and the temple of Taj Mahal.
The continued existence of the village was hindered, but also protected by a building prohibition.
Due to the plans for the power plant, the beautiful and architecturally valued houses had
deteriorated considerably. With the help of Juminkeko, the villagers have been educated, houses
restored and new plans drawn up for the future.
Cosmic Play
[ K o s m i n e n n ä y t e l m ä ]
Cosmic Play is a documentary film about Kati Sinenmaa’s pursuit of a life outside society. In spring
2001, she gave up her rented Helsinki city apartment and moved to a small piece of woodland
right in the middle of the busiest intersections of railroads and bridges in Pasila, Helsinki.
Kati builds a massive wall against society from stones. The stronghold becomes the very image
of her soul: the inner being of an artist has been taken out, yet society wants to put it in again.
Kati Sinenmaa does not adapt to the lifestyle expected by society. She does not hold a job, she
neither rents an apartment or receives any support from society. All her clothes and meals are
donations or picked from trash cans. She tries to be free and boundless. However, a free Internet
service is the link that binds her back to society.
In the film we follow Kati’s life for four years. Living in the woods is full of challenges. The society
Kati attempts to leave behind, does not leave her in peace. Kati’s life gets very particular. She
pours out everything on her web-pages and also in an abundance of dozens of pages of replies to
the demands of the society. At the same time, she starts to live in the Internet, in the reality of the
mind, in the physical reality and in the spirit world in between.
Paper Promises
[ K o n e 1 7 ]
The Voikkaa paper mill has formed slowly along a dark flowing river. There are residences on
both sides of the river. Everyone seems to have a view on the factory. The symbiosis of people
and factory is strong. We are at the heart of the world’s largest paper industry centre. However,
the factory lives in the early 21 st century when the paths of national industries and international
capital have inevitable clashes. That also affects the people of this factory. In April of 2004 paper
machine 17 is shut down – for good.
That machine had produced paper non-stop for almost seventy years. When it stops, the lives
of a hundred and sixty people change. Some find new employment at nearby Kuusankoski factories,
and some retire but there are those who fear they will become unemployed. The shutting
down of machine 17 reflects on the whole community. The drama unfolds in homes, restaurants,
streets and people’s minds. Self-respect, self-worth and their loss, adapting to new situations or
giving in to the feeling of loss are the basic themes of this film.
The community formed around the machine disintegrates, the tone of friendships changes,
the inner rhythm of families is altered, the whole basic structure of life has to find a new form.
This is a story of inevitable change where substantial economic events clash with individuals
and the small. All this time, the Kymijoki river flows by indifferent to these events. People cross
the river by bridge every day. People change but the river remains the same.
The directors
A group of seven directors made this film: Issu Huovinen, Leo Märkälä, Heta Partanen, Ilona Reiniharju,
Eija Romppanen, Mika Suikkanen, Pentti Taipale. This is the first big documentary for all
of them. Some of them are students, some already have more experience in the field. The group
and the topic of the film were borne out of The Other Finland (Toinen Suomi) training project.

Pavlov’s Dogs
[ P a v l o v i n k o i r a t ]
These days, even poverty can be bought. A Russian psychologist, Sergei Knyatzev, provides the
experience of being a beggar to wealthy people who have tried everything and are looking for
something new.
But this is only one of the games that this psychologist has developed. He specializes in roleplaying
and mental manipulation, starting with animals and small groups of people, and climaxing
with his mass control of 7000 individuals.
The film speaks in an interesting mannerism of our time: where nothing is enough, and people
try to acquire both basic and extreme experiences by buying them. Everything’s for sale. Richness
often alienates people at the expense of a balance in life. That in turn opens out a market for any
entrepreneur with even the slightest understanding of the human psyche, just as it does for Sergei
Knyatzev. Through these games he is also evoking people’s attitudes and society’s structure.
Arto Halonen
Arto Halonen has directed numerous films, including e.g. A Dreamer and
the Dreamtribe (Unelmoija ja unikansa, 1998), Karmapa: A Voyage on the Roof
of Cuba (Kuuban valloittajat, 2005) and The Legend (Legenda, 2005).
He is the owner of film production company, Art Films production Ltd,
and also produces films. He has acted in 2000–2003 as the chairman and
a member of the executive committee of the Documentary Guild, a parent
organisation of documentary makers. He is also the founder and festival
director (2001–2004) of DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival.

Revolution is a documentary musical about the 70’s generation’s fight for a better world. Socialism
seemed like a real alternative. The movement offered a whole unified world where it would be
easy to be on the right side – against anything old and reactionary. Songs played a central role in
this revolution. Hundreds of song groups sprung up. The songs told stories of battles, solidarity,
socialism, Vietnam, Chile. Now middle-aged former revolutionaries return to their combat songs,
singing in the environments revealing their present status and work places. Music creates some
distance and in many ways, depicts the experiences and spirit of the era. The music also symbolizes
the pomposity and rhetoric often so blatantly and comically at odds with reality and everyday
life. What has happened to the idealism of youth
Jouko Aaltonen
Jouko Aaltonen (b. 1956) has directed a wide range
of documentaries on various topics and environments
ranging from Siberian Taiga to the diplomatic society
of New Delhi. His latest work includes the films:
Constructing and Destroying (Rakenna ja tuhoa, 1998),
In the Arm of Buddha and the Drum
Väinö Auer (1895–1981)
Väinö Auer (1895–1981) is a documentary film about the life and work of the Finnish scientist
Väinö Auer in Finland and in Latin America. Auer was geographer, explorer and above all swamp
geologist. His swamp auger reached the central, post ice age layers of earth’s climate history in
Canada, Finland, Tierra del Fuego and Patagony. The film travels in time to the different stages
of Auer’s life: in the swamps and wilderness of Finland, the peculiar shallow swamps of Tierra
del Fuego and the Patagonyan pampas that are whipped by dusty winds. The documentary film is
based on Auer’s diary entries and articles. Through them, it also takes a tour of dramatic human
history in the 20th century. The journey of a pioneering climatologist from nationalism to global
awareness and concern about the development of the relationship between man and nature.
smith, Sauli, pays for his insubordination, as he is banished by Paavo.
The emperor demands the Ferris wheel for himself. One of the villagers, a man called Erkki,
opposes the requisition of the contraption and is jailed. Paavo sets off to save Erkki, going against
authority for the first time in his life.
The emperor doesn’t take a kind eye to the rescue operation. Paavo becomes wanted by the
authorities, and when the villagers refuse to turn him in, the whole population is exiled. In order
