Is it selfish to stock up on sales items
I received lots of feedback
from readers concerned
about advice I passed on: to
maximize savings by purchasing
as many sale items
as possible with your coupons.
Here’s one letter:
In reading your column,
I’m concerned that you
may be encouraging people
to take more than their
share. Countless times, I’ve
gone to buy a product with
a coupon and had to get
a rain check. Meanwhile,
I have witnessed people
buying cases upon cases of
the same product. I know
people may feel they are
just out for themselves
and their families, but how
greedy can you get
It’s true that when we
buy on a price-based basis
versus a needs-based basis,
the items that are on the
best sales at the store deplete
quickly. So what’s a shopper
to do
This reader is definitely
on the right track by getting a
rain check. While it may be a
minor inconvenience to have
to get a rain check when the
store is out of a particular sale
item, it can also work to our
advantage as shoppers. Most
rain checks are good for 30
days. That’s a nice, long time
to check back at the store, at
your convenience, and pick
up sale items when they’re
back in stock.
You can even use rain
checks to “extend the sale”
for yourself! During a great
sale on dog food, our store
was having trouble keeping
bags in stock. I bought the
last three bags that were on
the shelf — and of course, I
used my coupons on them.
Then, I asked for a rain check
for six more bags.
Over the next few days,
I got in touch with friends
and family who also save
their coupons, but don’t own
dogs. I asked them if I could
have their dog food coupons.
Native
Emmy’s
A week later, I went back to
the store and picked up more
people buying up every
single item in stock during
a sale, I do sympathize. I’ve
never been a “shelf-clearer,”
nor do I advocate being one.
I’m certainly aware that at
times, if something’s a fantastic
deal, it’s tempting to
buy every one of them in
sight!
And I know there are two
schools of thought when it
comes to great sales. Either
you feel you’re “first come,
first served” and are entitled
to buy whatever you want, or
you will buy in moderation
and leave some behind for
others.
I’ve found that a third option
works well, too: special
orders. Most major grocery
stores (drugstores too) order
and receive stock every
single day. If there’s something
I want to buy in a larger
quantity that might affect
how many of a certain item
is on the shelves for everyone
else, I’ll go to the store’s
service counter and order it.
This has two benefits. I’m
not clearing the shelf of a
product and potentially leaving
others frustrated. And I
also know that the next day,
I will get a phone call letting
me know that my items are
in. I can go to the counter,
pick up exactly what I need,
and I won’t have to make extra,
unnecessary trips to the
store to see if my products
may finally be back in stock.
Remember, stores want
our business. It’s usually not
a problem at all to specialorder
products. Most stores
are very happy to accommodate
their customers. During
a recent sale on bottled water
at a local grocery store,
so many people in our town
were special-ordering water
that the service counter at the
store had pyramids of water
cases sitting behind it, each
with a note stuck to the top
with the name of the customer
who had ordered it!
This is a win-win for the
store and the customer. The
store knows it has a guaranteed
sale to the customer who
has ordered the product, and
the customer is happy, too,
Each of the ladies was
greeted at the door by the
hostesses: LaJuana Newnam-
Leus, Nancy Traeger, Mary
Ann Johnston, Lenora
Dickens, Linda Pipes,
Peggy Tope, Sarah Gella,
Elaine Kolodziej, Lilli De
Moczygemba.
The tables were decorated
using some of the dolls from
Moczygemba’s collection.
Every doll had a painted
ceramic face and each was
dressed in bridal fashions,
sailor outfits, or Sunday finery
Ṡarah Gella, president,
called the meeting to order
and introduced the hostesses.
She introduced the program,
which consisted of Bob
Green’s piano and guitar students.
Two young men played
two guitar duets for the members.
Two of Green’s students
played the piano, and one
student entertained the ladies
with a song. Green told the
members that he did not have
recitals, so this was an opportunity
to perform
in front of an audience.
All of the
students were
very good.
The refreshments
served were chicken
salad sandwiches and pimento
cheese sandwiches, candied
pecans, and a choice of
lemon cake or Boston cream
pie cake. Two kinds of hot tea
were also offered.
Sidetracked to achieve His purpose
I’ve collected many stories
over the years via e-mail,
snail mail, and published
materials. Most everything
I use has no author attached
to it, but I do save all my
sources for future reference.
Some of them sit around for
some time before I use them.
Then suddenly they seem to
fit the thought of my column
perfectly.
I received a story the
other day that made another
story stand out, and I
thought it appropriate to use
them together. They are love
stories, one for the body and
one for the soul. They are
rather lengthy, so we’ll share
one this week and the other
next week.
A nurse took the tired,
anxious serviceman to the
bedside. “Your son is here,”
she said to the old man. She
repeated her statement several
times before the patient’s
eyes opened. Heavily sedated
because of the pain of his
heart attack, he dimly saw
the young uniformed Marine
standing outside the oxygen
tent. Reaching out his hand,
the Marine wrapped his
toughened fingers around
the old man’s limp ones,
squeezing a message of love
and encouragement.
The nurse brought a chair
so the Marine could sit beside
the bed. All through the
night, the Marine sat there
in the dimly lit ward, holding
the old man’s hand and
Forever
offering words of love and
strength. Occasionally, the
nurse suggested the Marine
move away and rest awhile,
but he refused.
Whenever the nurses
would come and go, the
Marine was oblivious to
their presence. The noises of
the hospital — the clanking
of oxygen tanks, the laughter
of the night staff as they
greeted one another, the cries
and moans of other nearby
patients — did not move
him. Now and then, the nurse
heard him say a few gentle
words; the dying man said
nothing, only held tightly to
his son all through the night.
Towards dawn, the old
man died. The Marine released
the now lifeless hand
he had been holding and
went to tell the nurse. While
she did what she had to do,
he waited.
When she returned, she
started to offer words of
sympathy, but the Marine interrupted
her. “Who was that
man” he asked. Startled, the
nurse said, “I thought he was
your father!”
“No, he wasn’t,” the
Marine replied. “I’ve never
seen him before in my life.”
“Why didn’t you say something
when I took you to
him” inquired the nurse.
“I knew right away there
had been a mistake, but I also
knew he needed his son, but
his son wasn’t here. When I
realized he was too sick to
tell whether I was his son or
not, and knowing how much
he needed me, I stayed. I
came here last night looking
for a Mr. William Gray. His
son has been killed in Iraq,
and I have been sent to inform
him.”
The eyes of the nurse
filled with tears as she replied,
“The man whose hand
you held and comforted all
night is Mr. William Gray.”
(Acts 17:22-28) Paul was
speaking to a group of Greek
philosophers about their concept
of “the Unknown God.”
He told them that all things
came from God and that
God is not served by human
hands or in need of anything,
“ ... because he himself gives
all men life and breath and
everything else.” “... and he
determined the times set for
them and the exact places
where they should live.”
As an earthly father determines
what is best for his
family and moves to locations
that will most benefit
the family, so God directs us
to places where we will seek
and serve Him to the benefit
of others, in His name.
Like the Marine, we all
have physical responsibilities.
I have learned to let God
sidetrack me, because when
He directs my footsteps, I receive
a physical and spiritual
reward. Plus, the task at hand
gets completed in a better
way than my way.
How to
get Social
Security
disability
Dear Savvy Senior,
What do I need to do to get
Social Security disability I’m 58
years old and have back problems
that are keeping me from doing my
job, but I’ve heard it’s very difficult
to actually get disability benefits.
What tips can you offer
Disabled Dave
Dear Dave,
The process of getting Social
Security disability benefits can be
tricky and time-consuming, but you
can help yourself by doing some
homework and getting prepared.
Here’s what you should know.
Last year, around 3 million
people applied for Social Security
disability benefits, but two-thirds
of them were denied. Why the
By Jim Miller
high denial rate Because most applicants
fail to provide sufficient
medical evidence that prove they’re
disabled and can’t work. While
there are no magic tips to getting
Social Security disability, there are
several steps you can take to give
yourself a better chance for a favorable
decision.
Your first step is to know if your
disability meets Uncle Sam’s criteria.
Social Security strictly requires
that you must be physically or mentally
unable to perform “any” substantial
work and have a medical
condition that’s lasted or is expected
to last at least a year or result in
death. You must also have worked
five out of the last 10 years and be
under full retirement age. For more
details, see http://ssa.gov/dibplan/
dqualify4.htm and go through the
five questions Social Security uses
to decide if you’re disabled.
If you think you qualify, your
next step is to learn all you can
about how the program works.
Your best resource is http://
SocialSecurity.gov — click on
“Disability.” Or, if you don’t have
Internet access, Social Security offers
lots of free publications that
you can have mailed to you, including
“Disability Benefits” (publication
No. 05-10029), which provides
a good comprehensive overview.
Call 1-800-772-1213 to order publications.
After you bone up, your next
step is to gather up your personal,
financial, and medical information
so you can be prepared and organized
for the application process.
You’ll need your Social Security
number; birth certificate; names,
addresses, and phone numbers of
the doctors, hospitals, and clinics
that took care of you and dates of
your visits; names and dosage of
all the medicine you take; medical
records from your doctors, therapists,
hospitals, and clinics; lab
and test results; documents stating
your physician’s objective view of
your condition, restrictions, and
limitations; a summary of where
you worked and the kind of work
you did; and a copy of your most
recent W-2 form or, if you are selfemployed,
your federal tax return
for the past year.
After you get your information
together, you can apply either online
at http://ssa.gov/applyfordisability,
or call 1-800-772-1213 to
make an appointment to apply at
your local Social Security office
or to set up an appointment for
someone to take your claim over
the phone. The whole process lasts
about an hour.
If you schedule an appointment,
a “Disability Starter Kit” that will
help you get ready for your interview
will be mailed to you. If you
apply online, the kit is available at
http://ssa.gov/disability.
It takes three to five months
from the initial application to receive
either an award or initial denial
of disability benefits. The only
exception is if you have a chronic
illness that qualifies you for a
“compassionate allowance” (see
http://ssa.gov/compassionateallowances),
which fast-tracks cases
within 10 days.
If Social Security denies your
application for disability, you can
request a hearing to appeal the decision,
and you’ll be happy to know
that roughly 55 percent of cases
that go through a round or two of
appeals end with benefits being
awarded. But the bad news is, with
a backlog of over 700,000 people
currently waiting for a hearing, it
will take a year or two for you to
get one.
If you are having trouble getting
your applications in order or need
help with your appeal, consider getting
an attorney or a Social Security
disability claims services company
to represent you. A representative
can only charge you if they’re successful
in getting you benefits. If
they do succeed, typical fees are
25 percent of past-due benefits or
$6,000, whichever is less.
REMINISCING
In those days, I was armed and dangerous
During my 26 years of working
with the Head Start program
here in Floresville, I
had many memorable moments,
some of which I want
to share with you.
After working as an assistant
cook for 10 years, I
was blessed with the position
of teacher/director of El
Mesias Head Start Center. I
had some big shoes to fill.
Mrs. Josephine Garza, who
was also a good friend, had
very competently held that
position for about 17 years.
Head Start was going
through some major
changes. All teachers were
now required to obtain a
child development associate’s
credential or degree.
So I started attending San
Antonio College at the age
of 50! There were several of
For most of the two years
that I went to school two
nights a week, I had others
to carpool with. But then,
toward the end, there was a
semester when I had to drive
by myself. I made the mistake
of mentioning to Henry
that it was kind of spooky
would get there earlier
and get the parking spaces
closer to the building. While
I was still walking to the car,
most of the others were already
driving off.
Well, Henry and Louie,
our oldest son, decided that I
needed protection. I thought
one of them was going to
volunteer to go with me. Fat
chance! They suggested that
I carry a gun for protection.
Having hated guns all
the years since I got married
(there were never any
guns in my parents’ house), I
strongly objected. They kept
on insisting — harassing, really
— until I finally gave
in.
They gave me a small
22-caliber handgun and
showed me how to use it. I
really wanted to leave it in
the glove compartment, but
they asked what good that
would do if someone jumped
me while I was walking to
the car. So it went in my
backpack, along with the
books. I was always so nervous,
because I was sure it
would fall out at some point.
Thank God I never had to
use it. No one, either at the
college or at the Head Start
center, ever found out what I
was doing, but it was the longest
semester ever for me.
To me, the best protection
has always come from
the Lord and my guardian
angel.
History of the La Vernia Garden Club
The La Vernia Garden Club
was organized March 2,
1964, under the leadership
of Gail Shriber, historian
and member of the original
Wilson County Historical
Survey Committee.
Mrs. Shriber invited a
group of ladies into her
home on Jan. 27, 1964, to
discuss the possibility of
organizing a garden and
civic club in La Vernia. A
second meeting followed
on Feb. 6, 1964, in the La
Vernia Methodist Church
Educational Building, at
which time a temporary slate
of officers was appointed.
Another meeting followed
Feb. 24 with 13 present.
The name La Vernia
Garden Club was unanimously
selected. The rose
was selected as the club
flower and the live oak as the
club tree. Club colors were
green and white. Meetings
were to be held every third
Wednesday of the month,
September through May
(excluding January) at two
o’clock in the afternoon.
Annual dues were $2 per
member, payable at the first
meeting of the year.
The constitution and
by-laws were read and approved
by the charter members.
A special meeting was
held on March 10, 1964, to
install the following elected
officers for the year 1964-
65: president, Mrs. John
Cockrell; first vice president,
Mrs. W.E. Walker; second
vice president, Mrs. Joe
Shriber; third vice president,
Mrs. Ralph Huebinger; recording
secretary, Mrs. Carl
Richter; corresponding secretary,
Mrs. Maple Hughes;
treasurer, Mrs. Samuel
Toney; and chaplain, Mrs.
Alvin Vorpahl.
Mrs. Fred Pierdolla Sr.
was appointed as the representative
to the San Antonio
Garden Center, and Mrs.
Ruth McGuire of the Sylvan
Garden Club, San Antonio,
served as installing officer.
The following ladies
were charter members of
the La Vernia Garden Club:
Pierdolla, Ottilie Reams,
Alice Scull, Pearl Shriber,
Lydia Tewes, Gertrude
Toney, Anona Vorpahl, and
Leona Vorpahl.
Due to the fact that a
number of ladies in this
group were employed, the
possibility of forming a
second club to meet in the
evening was discussed and
approved. The new evening
club was named “Town and
Country” Garden Club.
The following statement
appeared in the local newspaper
in May 1964: “Garden
Club work is such worthwhile
work, even though it
takes a lot of planning to get
it done. La Vernia will one
day be grateful to these two
clubs for the effort, time,
and labor they must put out
for the cause.”
There have been many
worthwhile projects sponsored
by the garden club in
the past 46 years. Many of
the live oak trees and crape
myrtles around La Vernia
were planted by garden club
members in 1960, 1970, and
1980.
Note cards depicting
historical sites in La Vernia
were compiled and sold
in 1996. The garden club
helped to defray the cost
of the Thomas Applewhite
Homestead marker at the
Finch Funeral Home in
1996. A donation was made
to the La Vernia Elementary
School Library in 1997 for
books.
A 40th-anniversary cookbook
was published and sold
in 2004, and $3,500 from
the sale of the books was
given to the Chamber of
Commerce to help offset the
cost of the “Welcome to La
Vernia” signs. A beautiful
quilt made by an appointed
committee of the garden
club in 2008 was sold to
raise funds for community
beautification. Joyce Beck,
a professional quilter, was
chairperson of that committee.
In lieu of Christmas
gifts, each member contributes
$10 each year toward
a monetary gift for the La
Vernia Food Pantry. The
club also planted trees in
2009 at the new La Vernia
Intermediate School valued
at $2,900.
garden club’s March 4
meeting, see separate article
