PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Although many are sad to see summer
come to an end, I personally love the
fall and the beginning of a new model
year. We are so fortunate to have the Orange
County Auto Show to celebrate that excitement
with consumers in the area and our
dealerships this time of year.
This year once again, the OCADA will
sponsor the 2nd Annual First Look for
Charity, an exclusive preview of the OC
Auto Show to benefit the Children’s Hospital
of Orange County (CHOC). The event will
take place Wednesday evening, October 1st
on the auto show floor, featuring cocktails,
hors d’oeuvres, multiple areas with live
entertainment and vehicle giveaways.
The momentum is really building around
this event. CHOC has deemed it their only
all-Guild event, and they are behind it
completely. We also have many exciting local
restaurants and distributors who will be
there to serve their fine wines, samples from
their menus, and their delectable desserts.
We ask that all of our members,
dealers, and associates get behind this
event by attending with your spouses,
managers, customers, and friends. But more
Matt Gunderson
importantly, we can unite as an industry and
support a cause that is vitally important in
our community. Make sure to mark your
calendars for October 1st. I look forward to
seeing you all at the 2nd Annual First Look
New Poster Required
to Recognize Changes to FMLA
In January, President Bush signed into
law the National Defense Authorization
Act for FY 2008, which amended
the Family and Medical Leave Act of
1993 (FMLA). Effective immediately, the
amendment permits an eligible employee:
1. Who is the “spouse, son, daughter,
parent, or next of kin of a covered
service member” to take up to 26 work
weeks of leave to care for a “member of
the Armed Forces, including a member
of the National Guard or Reserves,
who is undergoing medical treatment,
recuperation, or therapy, is otherwise
in outpatient status, or is otherwise on
the temporary disability retired list,
for a serious injury or illness.”
2. To take FMLA leave because of “any
qualifying exigency (as the Secretary
shall, by regulation, determine) arising
out of the fact that the spouse, or a son,
daughter, or parent of the employee is
on active duty (or has been notified of
an impending call or order to active
duty) in the Armed Forces in support
of a contingency operation.”
Senator McCain
Opposes a national health insurance
Would keep the death tax intact.
Proposes increasing the capital gains tax
On Nov. 4, 2008, the nation will hold the
56th consecutive quadrennial United
States presidential election that will
select the president of the United States. The
election is coming up fast, and the two major
parties’ candidates have not yet been officially
chosen. But, after a bumpy campaign trail, two
candidates remain as the presumptive nominees
for each party: Senator Barack Obama,
the junior U.S. Senator from Illinois, for the
Democratic Party and Senator John McCain,
the senior U.S. Senator from Arizona, for the
Republican Party. This is the first time in U.S.
history that two sitting senators are up against
each other in the presidential campaign.
In order to keep dealers informed and
provide a quick rundown, OCADA would
like to share some of the information on each
candidate’s position in relation to issues of
Opposes expanded drilling in ANWR.
Senator McCain
Introduced a bill in 2007 to establish a
mandatory cap-and-trade system.
Opposes ANWR drilling but would
support offshore drilling if there was
local support.
Supports raising fuel economy standards
but has not specified by how much.
Would exempt estates worth less than
Be a Part of
Child Passenger Safety Month
As a community service, NADA encourages
dealers to participate in Child
Passenger Safety month in September
by hosting child safety seat inspection
events at their stores or by serving as a
valuable community resource for important
safety information on the topic.
Dealers have inspected more than
one million seats, and found nine out of
10 seats either improperly installed or in
need of replacement since the campaign
began in 2003.
What is Boost for Safety
Boost for Safety is the name of this year’s
national campaign sponsored by NADA—in
partnership with the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA)—to educate
dealers, parents
and children on
the importance
of using booster
seats and to help
ensure that children are
riding safely in automobiles. Although some
manufacturers have had booster seat programs
in the past, the Boost for Safety campaign is
the first time that all franchised dealers will
have the opportunity to be involved in a
national education program about correctly
restraining child passengers.
Why Should I Get Involved
There are so many reasons for getting
involved in this nationally supported
promotion. You can raise awareness in
your community of an important issue
that affects most if not all of us. Helping
protect the safety of children is something
that everyone can appreciate. If you hold
a safety day event at your dealership, you
can increase foot traffic to your showroom
and generate goodwill with families from
your community.
Generating Local Press
Coverage
Peacock PR, the PR agency retained
by OCADA, will be helping generate
favorable press coverage of OCADA member
dealers’ safety efforts during the month
of September. The agency will be making
sure Orange County journalists know
about OCADA dealership participation in
the Boost for Safety campaign to increase
awareness of your community involvement
and drive traffic to your dealership. They
will also invite print and broadcast
journalists to attend CPS safety day events
How Can I Participate
There are a number of things your
dealership can do to be a part of the
program—everything from having safety
materials available on the showroom floor,
to training your staff on CPS, to having a
CPS safety day and installing community
members’ car seats properly. If you don’t
have a CPS trained staff member on board,
you can partner with a CPS technician
from your area to host the event at your
dealership. At the very least, you’ll want to
have materials handy to help answer child
passenger safety questions.
It is very easy to get support materials
from NADA. Just go to the Child Passenger
Safety section of the NADA website (www.
nada.org/boostforsafety). There you will find
a Dealer Toolkit that you can download and
other useful information. The Toolkit has
step-by-step instructions on planning and
hosting seat inspection events.
There’s also a link on the page where
you can order free consumer handouts.
If you don’t have Internet access you can
contact Kara Thorp at NADA, (703) 760-7562,
kthorp@nada.org.
Dealers can also purchase DVD copies of
the NADA sponsored Seymore’s playhouse
episode on “Car and Pedestrian Safety” at
special prices for distribution to parents
and caregivers during child seat inspection
events, for playback in dealership waiting
areas or as give-aways during test-drive
promotions. To order the DVDs, visit
AN UPDATE FROM CAPITOL HILL
BY: CONGRESSMAN JOHN CAMPBELL
Congressman Campbell’s
Energy Agenda
The price of gas has indeed been going up in the U.S. and other
countries around the world, especially since the start of 2007.
People across the United States are getting pummeled at the
gas pump, and they’re looking to Washington for solutions. Unfortunately,
Congress has failed to provide solutions and continues to
allow Americans to foot the bill. We have yet to see a commonsense
plan to bringing down gas prices, and since the start of the 110th
Congress began in January 2007, the cost of gas has risen by almost
two dollars, and there is no relief in sight. The point here is that we
need an energy plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and petroleum
in general. We also need to embark on a mission to increase
supply, development and distribution of the many alternatives to oil
and gas that exist today.
To alleviate some of the strain caused by the current high gas prices,
I will soon be introducing a bill to allow individuals to deduct the
full price of gasoline they use for commuting to/from work. We are all
aware of the record high fuel prices and I have been hearing from my
constituents about the impact these prices are having on their ability
to go to work. This bill would help relieve some of their pain. In short,
it would add a new line-item deduction on federal tax returns in order
for commuters to get the break. This would apply to both itemizers
and those that take the standard deduction. While this may only be
a band-aid approach to our overall energy situation, hard-working
Americans are bleeding from their wallets and need some relief. This
is just a start to relieving the pain caused by the high gas prices.
There are many out there saying we need to do just one thing to
solve this issue, yet we need a combination of things. Drilling alone will
not do it and we certainly cannot sue our way to energy independence.
Below I have laid out three pillars of a sound and reachable goal for
energy policy in the United States.
ENERGY AGENDA - Continued
In order to combat the scarcity of energy
resources, American made energy must be
expanded in an environmentally-safe way.
This can be done through high tech and
advanced exploration of oil reserves, natural
gas, and coal, as well as implementing
innovative fuel technologies. Congress
must support policies that reduce American
dependence on foreign sources of energy,
especially those in troubled areas of the
globe. This is not so far fetched as it might
sound; we can achieve this by increasing
environmentally-safe production of oil and
natural gas in areas such as the arctic coastal
plains and in deep ocean energy resources.
Furthermore, Congress should open up
the ability for exploration in ANWR, deep
coastal waters, and reduce the barriers
for exploration and the refinement of oil.
Additionally, Congress should no longer
hinder the development of unconventional
fuels through the spirit of entrepreneurism.
Increasing the availability of environmentally
responsible development of conventional and
unconventional domestic oil and natural
gas production by reducing barriers that
discourage growth should be priority number
one. Experts estimate that the nation has
a two trillion barrel shale oil resource, 80
percent of which occurs on governmentowned
land in the West. If these estimates are
accurate, it is enough to supply all of America’s
needs for over two centuries.
But this is not enough, we should
also be promoting new, clean and reliable
sources of energy like advanced nuclear
and next generation coal. Nuclear energy
has proven itself as a safe, carbon-free and
environmentally friendly alternative. In
fact, many European nations derive their
energy from nuclear based technologies.
France relies on it for nearly 80 percent of its
electricity needs, compared to just 19 percent
in America. This is able to occur by providing
production and investment tax credits for
all new base-load electricity projects such
as advanced nuclear power and clean coal.
The encouragement of the development of all
forms of alternative energy including, nuclear,
ethanol, methanol, bio-fuels, and liquid coal
technology, is paramount to success.
We should not be discouraging American
energy in any manner. American energy
production is currently handcuffed by
unwieldy regulations that subsequently
drive the cost of energy up. Moreover,
the exceeding high tariffs on ethanol and
imported sugar should be removed and the
distribution of alternative fuels and the
production of alternative energy cars should
be encouraged.
The third pillar of my policy is an
increased emphasis on efficiency. America
should support technologies to help increase
energy efficiency in all sectors of the American
economy, including removing bureaucratic
regulatory barriers that prevent businesses
from upgrading their facilities with newer,
more efficient energy technologies. In addition
to making any home energy upgrades that
improve efficiency tax deductable.
America has a tough path ahead, but
I am confident that with a plan that is
comprehensive in nature, a solution can be
successfully reached. The plan I have just
laid out focuses on three pillars: increase
domestic production of oil/gas, encourage the
development of alternative energy sources,
and encourage greater efficiency.
Matthew Moloci’s
1965 Convertible Stingray Corvette
GROWING UP IN DETROIT AS A YOUNG BOY, MATTHEW
MOLOCI DREAMED OF ONE DAY OWNING AND DRIVING
A CONVERTIBLE CORVETTE. AS A KID THEY WOULD
watch them cruise on the street and he could not wait for
his day. Matt’s love for cars led him to his profession as a
new car dealer.
While at his Acura dealership, Matt came across a
customer referral with a unique trade-in, his childhood
dream car. It was a classic, a 1965 Stingray Corvette,
convertible. The customer was looking at an Acura RL.
Matt took one look at the car and new this was a deal to
be made.
The Corvette was equipped with the style of 1965, with
the spinner wheels, trunk rack and a side exhaust. As a
car enthusiast, Matt took one look at this classic and new
this new investment was going to need some “TLC,” but
overall is was in decent shape.
The Corvette took Matt back to his High School days
of fixing up old cars. Little did he know, once he started to
work on it, what an investment this project would be. Now
Matt can claim to be an avid ebay collector car “search for
parts” guru. The 1965 Stingray now has received the “TLC”
it took to get it back in top condition.
Matt enjoys his 1965 Stingray; he even drives it to work
once or twice a week. To check out this “Dealer Ride,”
you can see Matt and his corvette at Cars & Coffee every
Saturday morning at 7:00am in Irvine.
