We are off and running on another two months of feverish
activity. We had our first Board meeting of the New Year.
We had an election of officers: Nancy Roberts - President,
Armand Grassi - Vice President, Virginia Waterfield -
District Representative. We are currently without a Secretary-
Treasurer, so if you’re interested in helping the Unit out, please
let us know!
The Fort Walton tournament was a wonderful success.
They enjoyed 202 tables for the weekend. Their hospitality
was great and the competition even better. It must be noted
that they did have great participation in the 299er’s games.
We were all so pleased. Of course, we are blessed with many
“snowbirds” during this time of year so our numbers were very
good. However, an unfortunate happening did occur; we had a
player from another state that just had a behavior problem. Our
Directors did address the situation but the damage was done.
Why in this world do folks behave in such an objectionable
manner Lesson for us all; when we have a person whose
behavior is not acceptable to the group, let the director know
at once. We don’t need any negative activity during our games.
Besides all of that, it breaches the Zero Tolerance rule.
The 2010 Goodwill Candidates to the District have been
appointed. They are Lee Anderson from the Fort Walton Club
and Ted Gardner from the Pensacola Club. They are invited to
attend the District reception to be held in May. When you see
the two gentlemen, please congratulate them.
I did have the opportunity to attend the Orlando Regional
District Board meeting in January to represent you along
with Carla Burke who was the acting District Rep in Virginia
Waterfield’s absence. We brought back loads of information
which was shared with your Unit Board. There was a call
for volunteers for the Nationals to be held in Orlando in
November. If you are interested in being a volunteer please get
in touch with Judy Schorner, jas910@jschorner.com.

Talk about setting records. We set a few at this year’s
Orlando Regional. Let me see, where to begin. Oh
yeah, the weather: record cold temperatures, for a
record number of consecutive days. There were even
snow flurries in the area. That was not so fun when
you had to go outside but maybe it brought more
bridge players inside. Yes, we set records there too.
We had 102 tables for Monday’s opening session, up
60% from last year. Then we set another record by
having the largest Regional ever held in the state of
Florida with 3,566 tables. It was a great tournament
thanks to all the hard work of our volunteers.
It’s time again for unit elections. I hope everyone will
exercise their right to vote. Please try to vote online as
it saves paper and many man hours to count the paper

Too Good For An Overcall
One other hand is described by beginning with
a “take-out double”. This is a hand that contains
about 17 high-card points and a five-card or longer
suit. If opener has 13 points, you have accounted
for 30 of the 40 points in the deck together. You
do not wish to merely overcall your suit because
partner will likely pass. You may double and then
bid a new suit. This requires at least 17 points and a
five-card suit.
Don’t Be Fooled
The take-out double is a direct bid by the
opponent of the opener. Contrast this with a
balancing double; one that is made when the
bidding would otherwise be over if the doubler had
passed. We use a concept called, “pass the queen”
when we make a balancing double. We borrow a
queen of any suit from partner, evaluate our hand
and then bid or make our balancing double. Partner
of the doubler must then “subtract a queen” from
his hand and make a response. The balancing bid
is often made on 9–11 points and a five-card suit.
Similarly, the balancing double is made with this
point count range and a four-card suit following
our distributional rules for take-out doubles.

IT WAS QUITE A CELEBRATION!
A wine and cheese event following a
bridge game on Monday, October 26
was attended by many of our 800
members and several local dignitaries.
President Merle Hauser introduced
Vero Beach Mayor Sabin Abell, County
Commissioner, Bob Solari and other
dignitaries. Commissioner Solari presented
the club with a beautiful plaque bearing a
proclamation noting the history of our club and
that the VBBC is one of the largest memberowned
clubs in North America.
Highlight of the celebration was the
recognition of several people who have been
members for 25 or more years. Each of those
honored was presented with a corsage or
boutonniere by Gini Hauser.
Past club presidents were also recognized.
Present were: Bill Weber, Wes Tillis,
Jan Ward, Melody Gabriel and Betty Wiese.
Nece Buckle chaired the event. Her committee
did a wonderful job with the usual array of
delicious food and attractive decorations.
Marilyn Cance and Millie Duble were the
door prize winners of the lovely frames made
by Louann Yates.
On Monday, November 2, the Vero Beach
City Council also presented the club with a
proclamation noting its 50 years of existence
in the city.
Members who have belonged to the club for 25 years or more were honored with corsages and

I want to start by thanking Bill Rauld as the out going
president and the Board members for having the confidence
to elect me your new president of Unit 243. In my first
message, I would like to reach out to all our Unit members
for any comments or suggestions on how we may improve
your Unit. Please feel free to email me - hcp07@comcast.
net - I will try to help whenever possible. As a Board we
are elected to represent our membership to keep the game
enjoyable and growing.
As president, I have two main goals:
1. See that the Regional and Sectional tournaments
are successful
2. See that all of our local ACBL clubs are successful.
Our December Sectional was a great success - even
with severe weather on the first day. This was due in no
small measure to the hard work of Marge Pecoraro,
Peggy Muschett and Carmela Knauer who proved that
the right number of cooks don’t spoil the…!
Our 4th of July Regional tournament will be held at the
Hilton in Deerfield Beach and the Board would like to
put special emphasis on introducing the tournament to
beginners and newcomers. I know that our Unit is blessed
with a great number of “seasoned” players and I hope to
see these players introduce and welcome all new players so
that new players feel comfortable at the tournament level.
The clubs must be a success for our Unit to continue to
flourish. With this in mind, I will be working with the Board
to help wherever possible to insure success at the club level.
Let's all have an enjoyable year of bridge in 2010.
