COVER STORY
by Mary (Lutz) Doty
This collage of pictures is my parents and grandparents The picture
of the home is the house I lived in until I was 16. This home and farm
belonged to my father’s parents. When I lived there, a second story had
been added to the rest of the house in addition a porch. This picture was
taken in 1907 and is my father’s family. My Father, Robert H. Lutz, is
on the left with his dog, standing next is his sister, Loueisa (Lutz) Lutz,
then brother, George Lutz. In the front seated on the left is my father’s
father, Fred Lutz, sister, Cecile (Lutz) Danzeisen, his mother, Matilda
“Tillie” (Klinck) Lutz and sister, Susie (Lutz) Harwick.
The couple on the bottom left is Matilda “Tillie” (Klinck) Lutz’s,
parents, Johann Christian “Crist” Klinck and Susanna (Oerther) Klinck.
She looks quite pregnant in this picture. The picture on the right is my
parents,’ Robert H. Lutz and Anna C. Bolton’s wedding picture.
Standing with them is my father’s sister, Susie (Lutz) Harwick and his
cousin, Henry Vagt.
In the top middle picture is my mother’s parents, Daniel R. Bolton
and Annie S. (Hungerford) Bolton. The picture in the middle at the
bottom is Annie S. (Hungerford) Bolton’s parents, Elon G. Hungerford
and Catherine J. (Parks) Hungerford.
I sure appreciate the wonderful job Kathy Mayhew did to arrange
these pictures and I plan to share it with my family at Christmas this
year.
[NOTE: The Froghorn’s cover photo collages are designed by Kathy
Mayhew from pictures submitted by members. She is looking for pictures
and ‘Cover Stories’ for future issues.]
THANK YOU, RUTH GALINDO
Ruth Galindo has served our Society as President for two consecutive
terms. That’s four years of guiding us through the jungle of genealogy.
As she passes the gavel on, we can look back with pride in her abilities
5

to keep us focused. Even during personal tragedies, Ruth persevered in
her duties as President.
Her kind heart and firm hand has kept our Society steadily growing.
Under her guidance, and sometimes gentle nudging, we have had
successful seminars and very informative speakers. Ruth, herself,
conducted “How To” programs on organizational skills. While it is not
always easy to come up with creative ways to run a meeting, Ruth
always entertained us with new ways to introduce ourselves.
Thankfully, we are not losing Ruth from the board of Directors as she
will resume her role as Parliamentarian. Her enthusiasm when someone
broke through their “Brick Wall” and her willingness to listen and
encourage us on our search for those elusive relatives has helped us grow
in creative thinking of ways to coax them out.
We thank you, Ruth, for your years of dedicated service as President
of our Society.
OBITUARY
ELOISE (HENDERSHOT) STENQUIST
The Calaveras Genealogical Society lost one of its valued members
July 17 th with the death of Eloise Stenquist. Eloise was a charter member
and served the Society in several capacities, the last as treasurer. In the
early years of the Society she maintained the scrap book of Society
activities and was a faithful volunteer on the Angels Camp Museum desk
when the Society was based there.
Eloise was born as Eloise Hendershot in Grand Rapids, Michigan
December 31, 1922. She married Ken Stenquist. They lived in
Wheatland, Illinois with their two sons, Jim and Bill, until the cold
weather drove them to the Bay Area in California. Ken owned a camera
shop until his death. Eloise was a vice president for Barclay’s Bank in
Concord for 12 years.
Eloise moved to Altaville in the early 1990’s and joined the Society
soon after. She will be missed by all who knew her.
The California History Room collection contains materials that
support research about the history of California. It is a large collection
of published materials, and includes primary materials as well. Though
we do not have a genealogical department, we have many specialized
publications and materials that assist in genealogical research regarding
Californians.
This is a guide to the most frequently used genealogical sources in
the California History Room. For those of you using this guide at the
library, it is intended to lead you directly to the most important
COMPILATIONS BY CALIFORNIA CHAPTERS
OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
California chapters of the DAR have donated and continue to donate
to the State Library typescript volumes of indexes and lists which are
specifically designed for genealogical research. With few exceptions,
those volumes useful for research on Californians are kept in the
California Room. Those works focused on the genealogy and lives of
people living outside of California are housed at the Sutro Library in San
Francisco.
The nature of these works is sometimes confusing because of the
wide variety of sources and styles of organization used in producing
them. The contents of a given volume are seldom drawn from one source
of information. They rarely contain the full text of official records. The
term “records” in a title often means a list or index of names found in
and abstracted from records.
In the following list, the leading numbers in parentheses refer to a
shelf order number that we have assigned each volume in order to keep
it on our genealogy shelves in the California Room. All of the volumes
are non-circulating. There is a county index to the volumes on the table
across from the shelves.
marriages, and deaths in the Sacramento Union, 2 volumes. Volume
CALAVERAS COUNTY
INDEX TO DEATH RECORDS
PREFACE
Tens of thousands of people came to Calaveras County during the
Gold Rush. Many of them died on the way or died in the early years of
Statehood. Often they were buried next to their cabins or where they fell,
sometimes with no one to record their names.
Many of their descendants are now searching for information on their
lost ancestors so the Calaveras Genealogical Society decided to form a
committee to accumulate as many death records as possible on the
citizens of the county who have passed on.
The Calaveras Genealogical Society cannot guarantee the accuracy
of the information in this data base since names were gathered from
various sources that cannot be verified, however it is a great source of
information and will be an invaluable help to those who cannot search
the original records personally.
The data base was originally the work of Herb Good with his task
taken over by Maureen Elliott in 2005 under the direction of the
Calaveras Genealogical Society. Maureen Elliott will be continually
adding new names and information to it as records are discovered. The
original source of information was reviewed as much as possible to
verify accuracy but in many cases only names and dates on tombstones
were available or articles written by others in earlier years.
The Calaveras Genealogical Society hopes this publication will be
helpful to those who are searching for their missing ancestors.
Printed June 2007
[The following list is the beginning and will be continued in each issue
of the Froghorn until it is complete. If you wish to see the complete list,
one copy has been printed and placed in the Genealogy Section of the
Calaveras Public Library, San Andreas, CA for everyone to view. This
list shows only the birth and death date, if known. The printed copy at
25

the library has more complete information and may give birth location,
death location, parent’s name, burial location, source of information,
etc. Sometimes a name is listed twice. That is because of more than one
source for the information, and each source may have a little different
information. Also this list does include inscriptions from tomb stones
showing space reserved for spouse]
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Submitted by Mary DOTY
Below is a list of seminars and conferences being held in northern
California. I do not have space to give complete details so I have
included the web site for each event. If you do not have access to the
internet, let me know and I will help you get the information you want.
September 2008
September 23, Tuesday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. The regular meeting for the
Sacramento German Genealogical Society will have their own
member, Ingeborg CARPENTER talking about “All about the
German Farm family’s everyday life in the 18 th and 19 th
centuries.” Ingeborg, who was born and raised in Germany, has for
years been fascinated by the operation of German farms, and the
lives of farm families. Her knowledge of German ways, German
households, and German farming traditions through the ages will
surely amaze you.
October 2008
October 11, Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is the annual FREE
Family History Day at the California State Archives at 10 th and
“O” Streets in Sacramento, California. They will have short classes
on a variety of subjects: beginning genealogy, what’s available at
local institutions, computer software and demonstrations,
preservation techniques, and much more. More details will be
available at our September and October meetings, and at website:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/archives/archives/htm.
Avoiding Potholes and Quagmires Along the Genealogical Trail.
general monthly meeting.
Sacramento German Genealogical Society will have Dr. Roger P.
MINERT, A.G., a professor from BYU, returning once more by
popular demand. Prof. Minert will be speaking on “The
Development of German Church and Civil Records through
History.” He will identify and locate church and civil vital records
for towns and cities in Germany (with borders as of 1871), and he
will explore the types of records available in specific provinces
during various periods of German history. Church and civil records,
a mainstay of German family history research, are often the most
valuable of all records for German genealogists.
