Garden Notes
Gardening Magazines and newspapers tell us that we
should be pruning, shredding and planting but unless
we are around when there is a dry, sunny day it is difficult
to carry out these jobs. Torrential rain at the beginning
of the month left a large area of the garden under
water as well as surrounding fields. In our case late
falling oak leaves had blocked drains so once these
were cleared the water went away but our clay ground
remained soggy.
A change of wind direction and some sunshine soon
dried things up and at last debris and leaves could be
cleared. Where leaves were removed masses of those
tiny crocuses were revealed, budding daffodils and
other bulbs. Snowdrops, primroses, camellias and
mimosa are now in flower and the whole garden ready
to burst forth – if only we could have a more settled
period of dry weather.
One sunny morning we became aware of loud twittering
and tweeting and saw that a large flock of birds had
taken over an oak tree. They hopped and flew about
the tree and looked like large sparrows. Were they tree
sparrows, redstarts, linnets – Our books didn’t help.
Near the house a squirrel removed the base of a peanut
holder so peanuts fell on the ground which it then
proceeded to bury one by one in the lawn.
Chippings and some railway sleepers now identify the
paths and shape of grandson’s kitchen garden and look
very smart. He recently visited a potato fair and
obtained Heritage seeds for unusual vegetables. What
delights are in store for us I wonder.
