requirements were typical of many high schools
in the early decades of the 1900s.
Demographics played a part:
• There were about a half million American high school
students in 1900, and about 16.5 million in 2008.
• Only about 8.8 percent of seventeen-year olds were
enrolled in high school in 1910. 92% of 16 and 17-
