BSN CHALLENGE PROGRAM FOR LVN, RN, GENERIC TRANSFER or RE-ENTRY STUDENTS<br />
The challenge program for the Bachelor‘s Degree Nursing Programs is designed to give LVNs, RNs, Generic<br />
Transfer (students from other BSN nursing programs in good standing), or returning students, a chance to<br />
document their knowledge base and nursing skills in specified courses of the BSN curriculum.<br />
The Challenge Process<br />
The challenge process evaluates the student‘s knowledge base, skills, and clinical abilities to validate and<br />
document prior knowledge and competence in nursing. It is not designed to teach those students who have<br />
learning needs in those areas.<br />
Unsuccessful Challenge<br />
• Theory<br />
Students who do not score a minimum of 75% on the ―challenge‖ exam will be required to enroll in the<br />
course. The challenge will be considered a 1 st nursing course failure. If students do not have a grade of ―C‖<br />
or above after taking the course, then the student is no longer eligible to continue in the nursing program.<br />
• Clinical<br />
All other challenge activities (clinical evaluation, written care plans, research papers, and written<br />
assignments) must be completed at or above the 75% level as well.<br />
Eligibility Requirements:<br />
• Have an unencumbered license to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN)<br />
from the Texas Board of Nursing or be eligible to return to the nursing program at <strong>HBU</strong> or the school from<br />
which the student transferred.<br />
• Have a minimum of six (6) months of professional experience as a LVN or RN;<br />
• Have an advising session with the Dean or designated advisor. The requirements for the degree completion<br />
will be viewed at this advising session.<br />
• Give evidence of current CPR and AED training for health care provider, health insurance and completed<br />
physical exam within 3 months prior to entry or re-entry into the Nursing Program.<br />
• Meet the additional eligibility requirements for the BSN program as required for the degree.<br />
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and >75% on the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) in Reading<br />
Comprehension, Grammar, and Math.<br />
• Demonstrate strength in science courses and potential for success in the BSN program(s). Students whose<br />
transcripts reflect more than two (2) grades of ―D‖ or ―F‖ in the required science courses or more than one<br />
(1) grade below a ―C‖ in a nursing course are not eligible to be admitted or continue in the nursing program.<br />
• Pass with a grade of 90% or higher the Math for Nurses test offered by the School of Nursing and Allied<br />
Health.<br />
• Meet the Reading, Math, and Computer proficiency requirements for the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
• For the generic transfer and reentry nursing students, successful completion of the background check<br />
process with the Board of Nursing is required.<br />
• For transfer and reentry students must be admitted/readmitted to the <strong>University</strong> and the BSN program.<br />
• All transfer students are required to present letters of good standing from the deans of all previous nursing<br />
programs.<br />
Graduation Requirements<br />
In addition to meeting the university and nursing program requirements for graduation, LVN, RN, generic<br />
transfer or re-entry student must meet the following criteria:<br />
• Complete the Graduating Level Curriculum checkpoints.<br />
• Attain the Nursing Student Association (NSA) required points.<br />
Summary<br />
Students must be successful in both theory and clinical portions of the challenges to receive credit for the course.<br />
Otherwise, the student will need to enroll in the course.<br />
Preparation for the Challenge<br />
• Purchase textbooks and course materials for the course.<br />
• Obtain a course syllabus from the faculty.<br />
