MUHL 3312, 3322, Music History<br />

Prerequisite: MUHL 2323 or permission of instructor. Should be taken in consecutive order.<br />

An in-depth study of the history of music from antiquity to the present. The course focuses on the lives, music, and<br />

cultural context of the major composers from historical, analytical, and critical perspectives.<br />

MUHL 3342 American Popular Music<br />

A survey of the development of popular music in America from minstrelsy through current pop music trends. Focus<br />

for the course will include the various genres and style traits of popular music, as well as its development and impact<br />

on American society.<br />

MUHL 3352 World Music<br />

An introductory study of non-Western musical cultures of the world. The course includes an introduction to basic<br />

music terminology and style traits. Emphasis is placed on the unique musical characteristics, instruments and<br />

performance practices of each ethnic group studied, as well as cultural factors that impact the music. The course will<br />

include attendance of live performance<br />

MUHL 3371 Christian Worship and Music<br />

A survey of the biblical roots, historical development, and theological meaning of worship, and the music used to<br />

facilitate and enhance worship from its Christian beginnings to the present. On-site class participation in several<br />

worship services is required. (Offered also as CHRI 3371 and MUHL 4292.)<br />

MUHL 4292, 4293 Senior Seminar<br />

An advanced study in the history and literature of music, conducted through guided research, discussion, and critical<br />

analysis of musical works that is offered as demand warrants on a rotating topic basis.<br />

MUHL 4312 Symphonic Literature<br />

Prerequisite: (Non-music majors will need permission of the instructor).<br />

The survey of instrument group forms from the Renaissance through the Contemporary period. Development of this<br />

body of literature will be examined, as well as the form and style of compositions comprising these various orchestral<br />

repertoires. This course will include examination of the development of the orchestra and orchestration.<br />

MUIE 0101, 3101 Symphonic Band<br />

The large symphonic grouping of all band instruments for performing the band literature in concert.<br />

MUIE 0121, 3121 <strong>University</strong> Orchestra<br />

A symphony orchestra performing a varied repertoire. Includes university and community personnel.<br />

MUIE 0131 <strong>University</strong> Handbells<br />

A handbell ensemble open to all students, faculty, staff and their spouses leading to varied public performances.<br />

MUIE 0151, 3151 Guitar Ensemble<br />

Group performance of the classical guitar literature. For classical guitarists.<br />

Non-music majors must have permission of the instructor.<br />

MUIE 0181, 3181 Jazz Ensemble<br />

Jazz-oriented ensemble - open to all students. Providing experience in jazz, rock, swing, bossa nova, disco and ballads.<br />

MUIE 1011 Woodwind Ensemble<br />

A small chamber ensemble rehearsing 3-4 hours per week. Enrollment by permission of the Director of Instrumental<br />

Activities.<br />

MUIE 1021 Brass Ensemble<br />

A small chamber ensemble rehearsing 3-4 hours per week. Enrollment by permission of the Director of Instrumental<br />

Activities.<br />

MUIE 1041 Saxophone Ensemble<br />

A small chamber ensemble rehearsing 3-4 hours per week. Enrollment by permission of the Director of Instrumental<br />
