8. Proficiencies: All undergraduate students must demonstrate proficiency in reading, mathematics, and<br />

computer use before the student files a degree plan. Students must demonstrate proficiency in written English<br />

by the end of the third term at <strong>HBU</strong>.<br />

Proficiencies may be met in the following ways:<br />

Written English: The written English proficiency may be met in several ways:<br />

a) Completion of ENGL 1313 and ENGL 1323 at <strong>HBU</strong> with a grade of ―C‖ or above<br />

b) Placement out of ENGL 1313 and/or ENGL 1323 by Advanced Placement Exam or CLEP scores as<br />

outlined in this <strong>HBU</strong> <strong>Catalog</strong>.<br />

c) Receipt of transfer credit for courses equivalent to ENGL 1313 and 1323<br />

Students must complete ENGL 1313 and 1323 proficiency by their third semester.<br />

Reading: One of the following:<br />

a) a SAT minimum verbal score of 550<br />

b) an ACT minimum score of 22 on the Reading portion;<br />

c) a score of 17 or better on the Pre-THEA Exam; or<br />

d) a score of 230 or higher on the THEA Exam.<br />

Mathematics: One of the following:<br />

a) Math 1305, completed with a ―C‖ or higher<br />

b) Math 1313, completed with a ―C‖ or higher<br />

c) A higher level math course, completed with a ―C‖ or higher<br />

Computer Literacy: One of the following:<br />

a) Passing of a computer Proficiency Exam purchased at the <strong>HBU</strong> Bookstore, and taken by student from<br />

their <strong>HBU</strong> Blackboard course.<br />

b) Completion of CISM 1321, with a ―C‖ or higher<br />

c) Receipt of transfer credit for a course equivalent to CISM 1321.<br />

9. Major requirements are determined by the college or school in which the major resides. See the<br />

appropriate college or school section of this <strong>Catalog</strong>. However, each major must include a minimum of<br />

twelve (12) upper-level hours.<br />

10. Undergraduate Degree Plan Declaration: Before 64 semester hours have been completed and once all<br />

proficiencies, a student must see his or her advisor to complete and file an Undergraduate Degree Plan with<br />

the Registrar‘s Office (only the Provost may provide a waiver for this requirement). Students who fail to<br />

follow this policy will not be considered as a candidate for a degree, nor will they be allowed to register.<br />

(See section on ―Degree Plans‖ in this <strong>Catalog</strong>.)<br />

11. Application for Graduation: A student must file a graduation application at least two (2) semesters before<br />

anticipated date of graduation. This may not be changed after registration for the second semester of the<br />

senior year. Students need to see their advisor to begin this process.<br />

12. Full-Time Status: The recommended full-time undergraduate student load is twelve to nineteen (12-19)<br />

hours each semester. Students who wish to take over nineteen (19) hours must seek permission from their<br />

faculty advisor and the appropriate college dean.<br />

13. Smith College Requirements<br />

A. Christianity Requirement: Christianity requirements include<br />

CHRI 1313, Old Testament<br />

CHRI 1323, New Testament<br />

Three additional hours from CHRI 2333, Christian Doctrine, CHRI 2343, Christian Ethics, CHRI 2353,<br />

Christianity and the World Religions, or CHRI/PHIL 2363, Christianity and the World Philosophical<br />

Tradition.<br />

B. Communications Requirement: These requirements are met by successful completion of:<br />

ENGL 1313 and 1323, Composition and Literature I and II*<br />

*To be eligible to register for ENGL 1313, student must meet at least one of these four requirements:<br />

8 on the SAT essay<br />

At least 500 on the SAT Writing section<br />

At least 22 on the ACT English test<br />
