“When the surface of a lake is still, you can see the bottom
very clearly, but it is impossible to do so, when the surface is
agitated by waves. In the same way, when the mind is still with
no desires and no thought waves, you can see your Self.
That is called Yoga.”
Swami Sivananda
(1887–1963)
A great sage and yogi of modern India and
the inspiration behind the international
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres.
Swami Sivananda served many years as a physician before
renouncing worldly life. He lived for more than 30 years as a
renunciant in Rishikesh, located on the banks of the Ganges
in the foothills of the Himalayas. There he established the
Divine Life Society and trained an entire generation of
recognised yoga masters. He wrote more than 200 books and
his teachings continue to inspire people around the world.
Swami Vishnudevananda
(1927–1993)
A world-renowned authority on yoga. He
was sent by his teacher Swami Sivananda
to the West, where he founded the
international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres in 1957. He
was an untiring activist for world peace, a highly regarded
master of Hatha and Raja Yoga, and author of the classic
textbooks The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga and
Meditation and Mantras.
Welcome to the Yoga Retreat House
The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Retreat House, open since 1998, is surrounded by sparkling brooks, pure
mountain lakes and deep, silent forests. You can visit on your own, with a friend or bring the entire family.
Our team looks forward to being of service to you during your stay.
Treat yourself to a yoga vacation
Time for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. The yoga vacation programme offers a perfect balance between yoga activities
and leisure time. Enjoy the daily yoga classes and the silent meditation; broaden your outlook during the noon workshop and
inspiring evening talks. Indulge in a massage or individual yoga coaching session. Between activities there is time for rest or
contemplation, by oneself or in the company of others. The yoga vacation programme runs throughout the year. You can plan
your yoga vacation around your own schedule and based on your own needs – no matter which yoga vacation topic is listed in
the programme. The list of yoga vacation programmes begins on page 14.
The Teachers' Training Course (TTC)
is one of the most treasured of the Retreat House's activities. Every year, people from around the world come here to participate
and to become emissaries of peace and relaxation. Perhaps you too have long cherished the idea of deepening your practice
and sharing the yoga experience with others as a teacher.
More than 30,000 students have graduated from the International Sivananda Yoga Teachers' Training Courses since 1969.
Advanced Teachers’ Training Course (ATTC)
is a four-week intensive course for trained teachers. In-depth training in advanced asanas and pranayama brings a wealth of
new experiences which enrich one's teaching skills. The reading of classical yoga scriptures, the introduction to Sanskrit, and
study of the anatomy of the nervous system expands one's horizons.
Further Training for Yoga Teachers and Certificate Courses
Deepen your knowledge and acquire new skills in one of the many further training and certificate courses for yoga teachers and
yoga practitioners.
Living in a yogic community
There are many opportunities of helping out at the Retreat House on a voluntary basis. Sharing your time and energy with likeminded
people of many different nationalities brings joy and inspiration for your yoga practice.
YOGA ACTIVITIES
AND IMPORTANT INFO
The universal science of yoga has been practised for thousands of years in India, where people
have retreated to the peace of the Himalayas for yoga and meditation.
At the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House, people from around the world have been finding their way back to
a holistic lifestyle in harmony with nature, benefitting from increased resistance to stress, greater lung
capacity, weight loss, regeneration and improved function of all body systems. Today in the West there is no
doubt about the healing and preventive benefits of yoga. Yoga gently brings body and mind into harmony
with the laws of nature and illumines the search for a deeper meaning in life. Everyone can practise yoga, no
matter their age, culture or religion.
Experience for yourself the benefits of a physical, mental and spiritual regeneration, and discover
how it feels to be a healthier and more relaxed you.
New to yoga
We recommend the following vacation programmes which provide a step-by-step introduction to yoga: 'Sivananda Beginner’s
Guide to Yoga', 'Yoga Relaxation Days' and 'In Peace Lies Strength'.
First-time visitors to the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House are given an introduction to the basic principles of the yoga practice,
meditation, the philosophical aspects of yoga and the yoga vacation schedule.
Yoga classes
The morning and afternoon yoga asana classes consist in breathing exercises, Sun Salutation, basic postures, variations
and deep relaxation under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Individual corrections and detailed instructions allow
participants to perform the exercises safely and in a relaxed manner, enhancing flexibility and mobility.
Newcomers and ‘rusty’ students are encouraged to practise simple variations of the basic poses. Special guidance is available
for those with back problems or other health conditions such as general exhaustion. Advanced participants are encouraged to
try classical variations and hold the poses longer. Weather permitting, the yoga classes are held outside under large sun shades
affording a spectacular view of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range on our beautiful cedar platform.
Meditation
The morning and evening meditation sessions are the most peaceful hours at the Retreat House. The practical guidance for positive
thinking and mental relaxation combined with concentration exercises gradually lead to inner peace. The chanting of Sanskrit
mantras (healing and energising sound sequences) deepens the experience of peace. A reading from yoga texts gives inspiring
insights into yoga philosophy and psychology.
Silent walks
The guided silent walks at the Retreat House offer moments to treasure – the gentle rising and setting of the sun, the various
phases of the moon, the hidden beauties of the valley, the panoramic view of the Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Tauern mountains,
the songs of many bird species, the variety of trees, bushes and medicinal plants along the foot-path. The breath deepens,
body and mind relax, the flexibility of the joints increases, the senses regenerate and expand and the mind rediscovers natural
contentment and peace.
Vedanta
The Vedas are humanity’s most ancient writings and are the philosophical foundation of the yoga teachings. Vedanta explains
how man can reunite with the immutable reality of the Soul. In this experience of deep inner peace, there is no longer any
distinction between body and mind and the restless search for love, success and happiness finds its end.
The vegetarian diet
Light, nutritious and freshly prepared meals are an integral part of the yoga vacation.
The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres draw on more than 50 years’ experience of teaching in the East and West. Step-by-step
menu plans help lead you to a more balanced nutrient intake, increased vitality and better digestion. Meals are served buffetstyle
and are made from fresh, organic ingredients using only pure oils. During your stay you will enjoy a variety of whole grains,
carefully cooked vegetables, a nice variety of side salads, expertly prepared pulses, dairy products from the best organic dairy
farms in Tyrol, home-made bread, jams and stewed fruits as well as imaginative desserts. In the cooking courses you’ll learn to
choose the right food combinations and quantities based on your body type.
Learn how to cook
In regular cooking workshops you can learn vegetarian alternatives for promoting physical and mental well-being: a variety of
recipes for busy people, energy-giving breakfast ideas and light dinners. You’ll learn how to make healthy, fresh and energising
meals at home in no time. There is no additional lecture or workshop on days with a cooking class.
Yoga shows the way.“
Swami Vishnudevananda
The 5 points of yoga
Learn yoga with the help of these five easy principles, adapted from the classical
yoga teachings by Swami Vishnudevananda:
1
Proper exercise – Asanas
Enhances the flexibility of the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments and stimulates
circulation. Flexibility and strength of the spine keep the body youthful.
2
Proper breathing – Pranayama
Connects the body to its battery, the solar plexus, which is an enormous storehouse of energy.
Stress and depression can be overcome by breathing more deeply and with increased awareness.
3
Relaxation – Savasana
If the body and mind are subjected to constant overload, their performance suffers.
Yoga relaxation techniques not only help to relieve existing stress symptoms (like muscle tension
and breathlessness) but also help develop resistance against external stress factors.
4
Proper diet – Vegetarian
Is healthy, natural and simple to prepare. It is digestible and easy for the body to absorb. It
consists of proper food choices which have the most positive effect on body and mind, at the same
time causing the least harm to other living beings and the environment.
5
Positive thinking & meditation – Vedanta & Dhyana
Are the keys to peace of mind. By controlling the mind, we can eliminate negative thought
patterns and experience inner peace.

For many years the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House has worked closely with Alexandra and Florian Pointner, the proprietors
of the hotel across from the Retreat House. This has allowed us to offer our guests a wholesome and nutritious vegetarian
dietary programme. The entire hotel has been certified by Austria-Bio-Garantie, Austria’s leading inspection body for organic
businesses. It was awarded the European eco-label as well as Austria’s gastronomic accolade ‘Grüne Haube’ for whole-grain
and natural cuisine. The Pointners have been running their farm according to organic and ecological guidelines since 1995.
Various fruits, vegetables and herbs are freshly prepared on a daily basis in the hotel’s kitchen.
All guest rooms have wooden floors, health mattresses, shower, toilet, hair dryer and telephone. Most rooms have a balcony.
The hotel uses clean energy from renewable sources (pellet heating and a solar-powered hot water system).

their own practice and personal discipline in imparting the yoga experience to others. To date, over 30,000 certified
Evolution in the Asana
With Swami Sivadasananda,
Yoga Acharya
Yoga teaches us that one consciousness
expresses itself in countless life forms.
Asanas imitate the natural sitting poses of stones, plants
and animals and prepare all bodily systems for the practice
of meditation. Complete relaxation in the meditation pose
slows down the metabolic process and enables a finer
sensory perception. Pranayama and mantra chanting direct
the consciousness to the subtle energy centres (chakras) in
the spine.
Experience this evolutionary journey in detailed asana and
pranayama workshops, short lectures and individual talks
on your personal yoga practice. Participation in the asana
workshops is also possible on a day-by-day basis.
