FALL
at Farmpark
by Andy Baker, Farmpark Administrator
Fall is the perfect time to visit Farmpark to
reconnect to harvest traditions and enjoy the pleasant
fall weather and countryside. Ongoing daily and weekend
activities are enhanced with two special events that frame a
four-week period of harvest activity.
Lake Metroparks Fall Harvest and Antique Tractor Show
opens the season with a celebration of grain, apples and
antique tractors on September 21 and 22. Apple cider
pressing, apple butter making, sampling of apple varieties
and cider introduce visitors to our local fruit industry. A
three-acre corn maze open from mid-August to October
14 provides a challenge to your sense of direction and
educational skills to master the winding paths. Connect
to our agricultural past with an antique tractor show and
demonstrations of antique harvest machinery. Sit on a John
Deere B or help guide the plow behind the team of draft
horses to appreciate the efforts of farmers in the past.
Throughout the following weeks and weekends, the corn
maze, a hay maze, play areas, cider making and apple
and cider tasting provide harvest fun daily along with all of
Farmpark’s regular activities and presentations.
The harvest season peaks with Corn and Pumpkin Harvest
Weekend, October 12 and 13 with engaging harvest and
craft activities focusing around corn and pumpkins. Young
visitors can visit the pumpkin patch and paint a pumpkin.
Sampling of apple butter, cider and harvest soup provides
a taste of autumn. Visitors can assist Farmpark staff in
shelling and grinding corn to experience farm life in the
past. You can also explore farm machines, help with the
fall plowing and make a corn husk doll. The corn and hay
mazes and all of Farmpark’s other activities provide an
engaging connection to our agricultural roots.
Bug Day!
FREE event!
Sunday, September 8
noon to 4 pm
Penitentiary Glen Nature Center
25 th year Bug Bash
by Kathy Terrell, Interpretive Manager
Join us as we celebrate all things buggy
at Lake Metroparks’ 25th annual Bug Day!
Bug Day is FREE and held annually the first
Sunday after Labor Day, when bugs are in
abundance. The event has been broadcast
far and wide and has found its niche with the
local audience as well as families who travel
distances to attend year after year.
Join us as we learn about these fascinating
creatures through demonstrations, games,
crafts, live animal exhibits, storytelling and
family fun that will feature buggy activities of
many kinds. Together we will celebrate the
amazing diversity of the insect world!
Year in and year out, our audience is
comprised of approximately 3,000 children
and families. Who knew that such little
creatures could create so much excitement
Children are naturally drawn to these smallest
of creatures. And since bugs outnumber
humans three to one, it’s important to
know more than a little information about
them. The goal of this event is to entertain,
enlighten and educate about the importance
of bugs and the role they play in our world.
The annual Bug Day bash is Sunday,
September 8 from noon to 4 pm at
Penitentiary Glen Nature Center. This FREE
family event is fun for all ages!
12
Our 25th Bug Day Bash will feature
some new activities and bring back
some crowd favorites of the past 25
years. Kids can earn a ‘Bugology”
degree certificate by participating in at
least five of the many ‘buggy” activities.
Mark your calendars, we will count on
you BEEING there!

Lake Metroparks’ Halloween Hayrides
A fall tradition for 25 years
by Brian Fowler, Chief of Outdoor Education
Lake Metroparks’ Halloween Hayrides started with a
simple hayride through the park back in the mid 1980s. Now
25 years later, it has become the largest Halloween event
in Northeast Ohio. The six-night event attracts more than
15,000 visitors and 1,000 volunteers annually. Halloween
Hayrides has become a popular tradition in which many
generations of families come to enjoy the scenic wagon ride
through the woods.
The event consists of a one-mile-long wagon ride through
the Farmpark into the forest passing by 22 unique “fright
sites.” A ¼-mile walkthrough area allows visitors to stroll
through the sites at a more leisurely pace. Also included in
the walkthrough area are themed tents to give a “haunted
house” experience. The final stop on the trail is a visit to the
performance tent
where local dance
groups perform the
Evolution of Dance
as glow stick figures
(pictured left).
While most
Halloween events
cater to the teen
market with an
elevated scare
factor, this event caters to families and dials down the
scariness. The idea is to encourage children and families to
enjoy the experience without being too scared.
The event is staffed by volunteers who entertain the
thousands of wagon riders each night. Volunteers come
from schools, scout groups, dance teams, corporations
and theatrical groups from across Lake County. For many
local students, it is their first opportunity to volunteer in the
community. Most return year after year and work their way
into the more celebrated roles of narrators and dancers in
the performance tents. For less theatrical volunteers, there
are many behind-the-scenes opportunities including site
design and construction, make-up artists, technicians, ticket
takers and tractor drivers.
If you have never experienced Halloween Hayrides, make
this year the start of a new family tradition! Be sure to get
your tickets in early September—the event is so popular it
usually sells out in just a few weeks. If you or your group
would like to volunteer for Halloween Hayrides, contact the
Lake Metroparks Volunteer Department at 440-585-3418.
Fall migration
Natural areas near the shore of Lake Erie provide beneficial stopover sites
by Tom Koritansky, Natural Resource Manager & John Pogacnik, Biologist
With fall approaching in northeast Ohio,
another migration season will soon be upon us.
Birds migrate in order to be near an abundant food
supply, escape from cold temperatures and to find
ideal breeding habitats. Not all birds migrate, but
the ones that do often travel impressive distances of
hundreds and up to thousands of miles twice a year!
Our summer avian residents have had a busy season
building nests and raising their young, but now that
the last broods have fledged, it’s time for them to
prepare to make the long journey south for the winter.
Migration is a very demanding task for birds. To
complete those great journeys, birds must spend
more time foraging as fall approaches in order
to build their fat reserves so they can travel long
distances. As the end of the growing season draws
near, many birds will form into large flocks, which
makes avoiding predators and finding places to forage
easier in large numbers. Herbivorous birds, which are
those that feed primarily on plant materials, will find
seeds and fruits in plentiful supply as they prepare to
migrate from northeast Ohio. Warblers, such as the
Yellow-rumped and Blackpoll, may be found feeding
on the ripened fruits of dogwoods, grape vines and
poison ivy. Insect-eating birds, such as swallows and
flycatchers, will also enjoy a generous feast from the
remaining invertebrate bounty including mosquitoes,
gnats and midges still active as days become shorter
and temperatures cool.
Birds en route to points south travel along migration
paths called flyways. Rather than a confined travel
route, a flyway is a broad area where birds tend to
fly. Noticeable geographic features such as bodies
of water, coastlines and mountains are often
incorporated into flyways. Birds use these features
as navigation aids in addition to their instinctive
and remarkable abilities to sense direction. A
preferred flyway will also feature sites for birds to
rest and refuel along their journeys. These places are
sometimes called stopover sites, and they often have
an abundant food supply, some cover for safety, and
a source of water.
Many types of migrating birds including waterfowl,
shorebirds, songbirds and raptors use Lake Erie in some
manner during their migrations. The large expanse of
open water acts as a barrier that funnels migrants near
the shore. Lake Erie also functions as a navigation
guide where birds route themselves using the shoreline
since they tend to travel along the lake rather than
across it. As a result, Lake County’s Lake Erie shoreline
is situated along bird migration routes that largely
contribute to the greater Atlantic Flyway. Red-breasted
Mergansers (a large diving duck), use Lake Erie as
an important staging area during their migration.
Observers have spotted up to 250,000 mergansers in
one area in one day!
Natural areas near the shore of Lake Erie provide
beneficial stopover sites to both our summer residents
preparing to migrate (such as the Yellow Warbler and
Gray Catbird) and passersby (including Bonaparte’s Gull
and White-throated Sparrow) that stake their claims in
places farther north for the summer. Lake Metroparks
operates six parks (Arcola Creek Park in Madison
Township, Lakeshore Reservation in North Perry
Village, Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry Township, Painesville
Township Park in Painesville Township, Fairport Harbor
Lakefront Park in Fairport Harbor and Lakefront Lodge
in Willowick) on the Lake Erie shore—all complete with
the essential elements of stopover habitats.
Lake Metroparks’ Lake Erie Bluffs in Perry Township
is a fine example of a migratory bird stopover site.
Grasses and flowering plants such as Timothy and
goldenrod along with smaller trees including dogwood,
sumac and wild crabapple provide birds with a plentiful
food supply and enough cover so they can
remain concealed during their stay.
The ideal habitat at Lake Erie Bluffs
is attractive to both migrating birds
and year-round residents. If you’re
planning a visit to Lake Erie Bluffs
this fall, be sure to bring a pair
of binoculars and look for these
birds that will soon be on their way
south for the winter.
all complete with the essential elements of stopover habitats.
Yellow warblers are one of our earliest fall migrants.
Southbound migrants can often be seen the first week of July.
(Left to right) The Bonaparte’s gull is one of the smallest gulls. Hundreds pass by
every fall.
Yellow-rumped warbler is our most common fall migrant warbler. They are
common in October.
Blackpoll warblers are much more common in fall than spring. Their
migration takes them from the western part of the country to the east
coast. From there they fly over the ocean to their wintering grounds in
South America.
(Left to right) Red-breasted mergansers are a common
fall migrant on Lake Erie in November and December.
Flocks of thousands of birds can often be seen.
White-throated sparrow is an abundant migrant.
In October, their flocks may number in the hundreds.
Gray catbird is a common migrant. They should be
watched for in the old field areas where they can be
found feasting on abundant fruits.
classroom programs and assemblies, we have something
for everyone! We can also work with teachers to design a
custom or multi-session program to fit their needs. We also
offer programs for homeschool families as well as gifted and
after school clubs. We can also adapt programs to meet the
needs and interests of individuals with disabilities.
engaging, exciting & fun!
We all know that “Cleveland rocks,” but did you know that
your class can explore the rock ledges and discover the signs
of glaciations that occurred in Lake County in a program
called Cleveland Rocks Did you ever think about walking
into a ten-foot-tall cell When classes study Structures &
Functions in Nature that’s what they experience. Our outdoor
education programs have students exploring on snowshoes
and cross-country skis, paddling rivers and lakes on kayaks
and even exploring the Physics of Sports. In Crops & Critters,
students tour Farmpark’s gardens and taste vegetables,
