LearnOnline Collection: Item Overview

Introduction

The Blackboard Content Collection is a solution for collaborating on,

controlling, editing, and storing reusable content items across course

sites, the University and among colleagues at other institutions.

Adding Content

The following steps will help you add content items or folders to your

collection area:

Adding an Item or Folder

1. Login to blackboard by navigating to http://bbweb.towson.edu.

2. Click on the LearnOnline Collection tab in the top navigation bar.

4. For an item, click the Browse button and choose the file you wish to upload and then click

Open. For a folder, choose a name, set the quota and other settings and click Submit.

When uploading a file, please make sure that the file does not contain any special characters such as

“#” or “!” or the file will not upload properly.

Choosing Options

You will now have to choose options for your file which will be described below. Additional

information on these options is also described in Modifying Content later in this document:

Lock File— Locking a file will prevent your file from being moved or overwritten until unlocked.

Share Comments— Users with Read permission will be able to view and add comments on files.

Enable Versioning— When Versioning is turned on, overwriting or modifying a file will create a new

version of it. All versions of the file will be retained under the Versions area of the file.

Enable Tracking— Tracking will keep a list of who accessed your file, when it was accessed, what

version it is, and what was done to it.

5. Select one or more of the Options above and then click Submit.

Your file will now be uploaded to the site and will display like Figure 1 below.

- This icon means the document is locked

- This icon means the document is not shared with other users

If you try to upload and overwrite a document that is locked, you will receive

an error. You must first unlock the original document before you can upload

a newer one. Additionally, Versioning does not work when you have

a document locked.

Modifying Content

CONTENT COLLECTION OVERVIEW

Once your file has been uploaded you will use the Modify feature to change settings or view any

modifications to your file.

1. Login to blackboard by navigating to http://bbweb.towson.edu.

2. Click on the LearnOnline Collection tab in the top navigation bar.

3. Click on the Modify button next to the item you would like to view.

You will now be given a screen with a large list of items to choose from:

Descriptions of Options

Read File— Will view this file from your web browser if it is compatible.

Properties— Will allow you to rename the document as well as change properties to it, such as

Locking, Versioning, Tracking, and Commenting.

Overwrite File— Allows you to upload a file to copy over the current one (Document must not be

locked).

Metadata— Allows you to add keywords to your documents for searches.

Versions— If you have versioning enabled, you will be able to view and remove additional version of

this file.

Permissions— If you want to share this file with others, this will be the area to add users as well as

set their permissions so they can Read, Write, Remove, or Manage your document.

Passes— You can use a pass if you want to grant specific users access to your item for a certain

length of time.

Tracking— A list of who accessed your file, when it was accessed, what version it is, and what was

done to it.

Comments— Will allow you to View, Add, or Remove comments added to this item.

Deleting Content

Follow these steps if you want to remove any items from your collection area.

1. Login to blackboard by navigating to http://bbweb.towson.edu.

2. Click on the LearnOnline Collection tab in the top navigation bar.

3. Click on the Checkbox next to the item you would like to remove and then click the Remove

button in the top menu bar.

Using the Web Folder feature

The Web Folder feature is another alternative to adding and removing items to your Collection Area.

You can also add folders using this method. To use the Web Folder:

1. Login to blackboard by navigating to http://bbweb.towson.edu.

2. Click on the LearnOnline Collection tab in the top navigation bar.

3. Click on the Web Folder button. If prompted, enter your blackboard username and password.

4. You will then be provided with an explorer window which acts like a folder, within this window

you can:

• Drag and drop items into this window as if it were a folder on your computer.

• Create a new folder by right clicking in the open area, selecting New, and then Folder.

• Remove items by highlight them and clicking Delete on the keyboard.
