Bringing the world to the Pilbara
www.reaf.com.au
On behalf of the Western Australian
Government, we welcome you to the
Pilbara region for the Red Earth Arts
Festival, one of the largest festivals
of its kind in Western Australia’s
North-West.
The Red Earth Arts Festival,
now in its third year, involves the
communities of Karratha, Dampier,
Roebourne, Wickham and
Point Samson.
The festival features dance, theatre,
music and performances by local arts
and cultural groups, highlighting the
breadth of talent in the region. It also
supports the development and growth
of the arts industry in the region with
a number of workshops.
The State Government is proud to
support the Red Earth Arts Festival
through Eventscorp's Regional
Events Scheme, which is jointly
funded by Royalties for Regions.
Regional events play an important
role in attracting visitors, adding
vibrancy to the area and promoting
it through valuable media exposure.
The Pilbara is the hub of WA’s
mining and resources industry, and
is home to a growing population.
It is therefore important to support
regional events to engage and excite
locals, and contribute to building
strong communities.
For those visiting the Pilbara for
the festival, we encourage you
to explore all the extraordinary
attractions the region offers.
These include Karijini National
Park, where you can find deep
gorges, secluded rock pools and
ice blue waterfalls; the Burrup
Peninsula, with tens of thousands
of ancient Aboriginal rock carvings;
or the Buccaneer Archipelago and
Rowley Shoals Islands, where you
can spend the day fishing
and diving.
The arts will play an intrinsic role in
transforming our community from
a resources town into a vibrant,
world-class city of the North. Public
art and creative open spaces,
as well as outdoor performance
venues and amphitheatres feature
heavily in our blueprint for future
development because we value
the contribution art makes to our
collective sense of belonging, wellbeing
and urban identity.
Incredible public art installations
already adorn the newly-opened
Frank Butler Community Centre,
Pam Buchanan Family Centre and
The Youth Shed. Once delivered,
public art installations will also be
on show at the Karratha Leisure
Complex and along Dampier
Highway following streetscape
upgrades.
In addition to public art
installations, new outdoor
performance venues are now
playing host to cultural events such
as the Shire’s own Twilight Tunes,
which was recently held, for the
first time, at the Nickol West park
amphitheatre.
The annual Red Earth Arts Festival
is one of the biggest events on the
Shire’s cultural calendar and would
not be possible without continued
support from its Principal Partners
the Woodside operated – North West
Shelf Project and Rio Tinto.
In 2012, REAF will bring a world-class
sand sculptor, Indonesian shadow
puppetry, the soulful sounds of
James Flynn, world music sensation
Azadoota, the internationally-popular
Spiegeltent, sand animator Pooja
Harischandra, film from the Perth
International Arts Festival, a 48-hour
play project and a whole new range
of activities for Art in the Park. REAF
will deliver more than 50 events,
across our five towns, providing
entertainment and opportunities for
all to participate in a range of arts
activities.
In 2012, the Shire of Roebourne will
look to firmly establish this event as
the largest arts and culture festival
in the North West. Over the next three
years, the Shire also aims to grow
REAF to be the largest regional arts
and cultural festival in Australia.
Hon Dr Kim Hames MLA
Deputy Premier
Minister For Tourism
Hon Brendon Grylls MLA
Minister For Regional
Development
Each year, the Shire also stages
a number of cultural events to
demonstrate to the community
the true scale of what is possible in
our increasingly sophisticated and
culturally-diverse region.
Principal Partner
The Woodside-operated North West
Shelf Project is proud to have been
involved with the Red Earth Arts
Festival (REAF) since its inception.
In a short amount of time we’ve
seen REAF grow into a spectacular
community event that has
something for everyone. This year
we’re delighted to have Rio Tinto join
us as co-principal sponsor.
We continue to invest in the
development of arts and culture
across the Shire of Roebourne in
recognition of our communities’
diverse needs. Working sustainably
is one of our company values and
helps guide our social investment
decisions. We look to contribute to
initiatives like REAF that involve a
variety of community organisations
working together.
Woodside
General Manager, Karratha Gas Plant
REAF offers an exciting program
of events and presents a unique
opportunity for our community to
engage in a range of arts and cultural
activities not usually experienced
outside the Perth metropolitan area.
I encourage all our staff, contractors
and their families to support REAF
with their patronage. I look forward
to seeing you at the events.
Throughout September the third
annual Red Earth Arts Festival will
bring a first-class arts and cultural
programme to the region that would
rival that of any other major city in
the world.
Rio Tinto is proud to join the
Woodside-operated North West Shelf
Project as a Principal Partner of the
festival that boasts a stimulating
line up of workshops, activities and
performances that will form the
2012 REAF.
From MC workshops and comedy
shows to dramatic performances
and film nights, the 2012 REAF will
set the region alight with creativity,
culture and excitement as artists
from around the world, and around
the corner, descend on the region to
entertain and engage you with three
weeks of wondrous programmes.
Art plays an integral role in the
history of our nation, in shaping
our community and expressing our
unique identity. From story-telling to
evoking emotion, art has the power
to challenge the way we think, feel
and learn. Expressions of creativity
can define who we are as people and
as a community. This year’s festival
will proudly showcase the diversity
of cultures, experiences and
backgrounds represented by our
vibrant community.
Rio Tinto is committed to the
development of arts and culture
in the Pilbara and last year
we invested more than $1.4
million towards arts and cultural
programmes in the region. This
significant investment enabled
the engagement of individuals and
groups in creative workshops,
events and festivals and increased
opportunities for local artists
through exhibitions.
I encourage you to immerse yourself
in the exciting repertoire of events
hosted throughout the festival, take
the opportunity to challenge your
creative thinking and connect with
new people.
I look forward to seeing you at this
year’s events.
Manager, Communities & Partnerships
Welcome everyone to the 2012 Red Earth Arts Festival. I am simply
thrilled to have been involved in the production of this 3-week long
festival in one of the most fascinating regions of the world. Comprising
over 200+ hours of art, theatre, music & entertainment, 2012 REAF
promises a range of sensational performances to cater to all ages,
preferences and cultural backgrounds.
2012 REAF aims to facilitate local community engagement and
contribute toward sustainable arts practices, further enriching the lives
of the communities of the Pilbara. I would like to express my sincerest
gratitude to everyone who made this festival possible: the hardworking
team of organizers, our many talented artists, generous sponsors and
dedicated volunteers.
Watch out for the Red Earth Art Ball - a temporary interactive art
installation which will feature throughout REAF. It will make surprise
appearances where you least expect it and is a metaphor for the journey
into the future. We look forward to celebrating diverse art and culture
with you at the festival!
Exhibition
The mining boom has brought attention to the Pilbara’s
resources industry, and the film ‘Red Dog’ has shaped a
perception of the Pilbara as a hard working, hard living
region. It certainly is both of these things, but this exhibition
will show the world what else the Pilbara has to offer.
Naturally, the exhibition will feature gorgeous Pilbara
landscapes, highlighting the spectacular natural beauty
that keeps us outdoors in all weather – rain, sun, and sand
flies. However, the exhibition will also showcase some more
unexpected perspectives on Pilbara life. We want to show you
the world, the scenery, the community, and the quirky little
touches that make the Pilbara a place unlike any other.
