Welcome
FALL 2008
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Dear Friends:
We are happy to share with
you some exciting news as
we’re in the beginning
stages of another expansion
at St. Thomas Aquinas
College. We are first going
to add a residence hall to
Aquinas Village that will
house 32 students. Once
completed in Spring 2009,
we’ll begin renovating Aquinas Village 1,
first built in 1982. That should go smoothly
as we work around our students’ comfort
and learning experiences.
The building (our 22nd) will be one of the
more obvious changes on campus, but we
are changing every day to accommodate
our students and alumni seeking to stay
connected to their alma mater. We now
offer Forensic Science as a major (see the
story in this issue) and Computer Science
with new, innovative learning tracks.
Our graduate programs continue to grow
in numbers as we look toward another
record year for undergraduate and graduate
enrollments.
We’ll always consider one of our primary
strengths to be our alumni. Your involvement
in our programs has enabled us to
provide a quality education for our undergraduate
students.
If you like, utilize the coupon in this edition
to let us know what you are doing
now or to request information on a particular
program. You can also recommend a
prospective undergraduate student – and
as we grow we’ve begun to see many of
our own alumni sending their own children
off to STAC!
Please use the enclosed envelope to send
in your comments along with the coupon,
and of course if you would like to make a
donation to the College’s STAC Fund,
we’ll be happy to count you among our
blessings!
Best Wishes,
Dr. Margaret M. Fitzpatrick, S.C.
STAC APPOINTS THREE NEW TRUSTEES
STAC INTRODUCES ITS NEWEST MAJORS!
St. Thomas Aquinas College will begin
offering two new majors this fall; a
Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic
Science and Bachelor of Science in
Computer Science for Animation,
Visualization and Gaming.
The new Forensics major combines a
foundation of courses in the sciences,
humanities and criminal justice and
meets the standards of the American
Academy of Forensic Science. It features
a required internship for students
between their junior and senior year
with a forensic science laboratory.
Employment opportunities in the
forensic science field have greatly
expanded in recent years. The need
for specialized training on various scientific
and technological protocols necessary
to analyze a crime scene and
related material has increased demand
for academic programs that will educate
students to fill these positions.
Practice. After more than a decade
with Willis Group Holdings he returned
to Marsh in 2007 and presently serves
as President, United States and
Canada Division. Mr. McSweeny
became chairman of the firm’s Global
Risk Management Practice in 2001.
He currently resides in Bergen County,
NJ with his wife and family.
Mr. Sharma is principal at CFS and he
is responsible for the overall management
of the firm as well as their project
assignments. His engineering work is
demonstrated in such properties as
IBM in Westchester, Dow Jones, One
World Financial Center and NBC
Studios. He served as an adjunct
professor for NYU’s School of
Continuing Education and is a member
of the American Society of Heating,
Refrigerating and Air Conditioning
Engineers (ASHRAE). He currently
resides with his wife and family in
Rockland County, NY.
The new Animation, Visualization &
Gaming option joins the current
Computer Science major focusing on
Information Systems. The program
prepares graduates for careers in the
rapidly growing fields of computer
graphics, animation and game development
and features courses in gaming,
web programming and digital image
processing and visualization, including
virtual reality techniques.
By studying under the guidance of our
highly trained faculty, completion of
these majors will afford our students
employment opportunities in the growing
fields of forensic science and computer
gaming. Forensic Science
majors can also prepare themselves to
continue their education in a graduate
program.
FALL 2008
REPORTER VISITS WITH ‘FRIENDS’ AT STAC
Dominic Carter always knew he
would succeed in life. During the
Spring 2008 semester, Carter, a
political host for New York 1’s Inside City
Hall, visited Lougheed Library as part of
the Friends of the Library series, to
encourage students to grab the reigns of
life and make their own dreams possible.
Carter began his speech by posing one
simple question - “How bad do you want
to make it in life and how bad do you
want to reach these goals”
Carter, who has been described as the
best political reporter working in the New
York area, recently wrote a critically
acclaimed memoir titled, No Momma’s
Boy: How I Let Go of My Past and
Embraced the Future about how he
overcame adversity in his life. A Rockland
County resident for the last 15 years,
Carter grew up in the Bronx with an
absentee father and a mother who was
diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.
He told the audience that while in high
school, his guidance counselor told him
not to waste his time going to college
because he would probably end up dead
or in jail. Carter used this negative energy
as fuel for his success. The experience
struck a chord with those in attendance.
“His story is inspirational and encouraging
to students who are struggling to find
their own voices,” declared Tracy Skala, a
sophomore that attended the speech.
Carter graduated from SUNY Cortland,
where he received a BA in Journalism in
just three years. He received his MA
from Syracuse’s Newhouse School of
Public Communications. Carter returned
to New York and began working at NY 1
as a television host where he has interviewed
countless political figures throughout
his career including, former Mayor
Giuliani, Mayor Bloomberg, New York
State Governors, United States Senators,
and Attorney Generals. Additional interviewing
credits include President Bill
Clinton while in office and Hillary Clinton
while serving as moderator for the debate
where she announced her candidacy.
Carter was also one of only two reporters
to interview Nelson Mandela when he
came to the United States.
Carter explained that if you are willing to
work hard and believe in yourself then
success is possible. “It requires a lot of
sacrifice,” Carter said, “but be realistic
and do not let anyone tell you what your
life will amount to.”
Nobody knows for sure where life will
take us. Nothing is permanent and success
can be measured in a lot of different
ways, not only paychecks and the fame.
Carter left students with one last piece of
advice, demonstrating his positive attitude;
“Anything is possible.”
LAETARE PLAYERS SELL OUT SULLIVAN THEATRE
St. Thomas Aquinas College’s
Laetare Players performed Moby
Dick!: The Musical as their spring
production to three ecstatic, sold out
crowds in the Sullivan Theatre this April.
Based on the music and lyrics by Martin
Koch, Hereward Kaye and Robert
Longden, the musical told the story of
resourceful female students of St.
Godley’s School who needed to raise
money in order to keep their school up
and running. In order to do so, the girls
and their headmistress, portrayed by a
man, decided to put comical twist and
humor into their interpretation of the
memorable novel, Moby Dick.
After working with Sean Mundy as a performer
during his freshman year, Evan
Matthews saw his potential as a director
and gave him the reigns of Moby Dick.
With a student director, Dr. Matthews was
given more time to promote the show as
executive producer. “I never thought I
had it in me to direct a full fledged musical
production,” said Mundy. “But the
support I received from Dr. Matthews and
my amazingly talented cast allowed me to
Amanda Binaghi as Ishmael
reach my highest potential.” This is the
second student-directed production by the
Laetare Players. Sean also performed
the role of Pip in the production.
The cast shared Mundy’s enthusiasm for a
student-director. “He listened to all that
we had to say and incorporated our
ideas,” expressed sophomore Catherine
Favre, a member of the ensemble. “Most
importantly, he had a lot of patience
which is essential in theater.” The cast
and crew featured faculty, alumni, and
students of the college.
The Laetare Players look forward to
presenting the fall semester’s production,
Hide and Seek, a mystery thriller by
Lezley Havard on November 20, 21, 22
at 8 pm. On Sunday, November 23 there
will be a special matinee performance at
3pm.”
FALL 2008
MBA OPENS DOORS FOR PROJECT MANAGER
Jake Schmoyer
After an encouraging recommendation
from a coworker, Jake Schmoyer was
convinced St. Thomas’ MBA Program
was the perfect opportunity to advance
his education and his career.
Mr. Schmoyer is the Director of
Procurement for Oldcastle Materials in
the NY/NJ Division where he is responsible
for $400 million dollars in strategic
sourcing and two procurement teams.
In addition, Mr. Schmoyer is the project
manager for selection and implementation
of a new Purchasing to Payables system
throughout the division. Since the
beginning of his classes at St. Thomas,
he and his superiors have seen a great
improvement in project results and cost
reductions that were inspired by his class
work. He has been able to develop
beginnings of a Knowledge/Database system
for his various teams, which has
greatly aided in promotions.
“The greatest lesson I learned from the
STAC MBA program is that you must
innovate, innovate, innovate! The classes
I have taken allow me to instruct on concepts
within my company and to excel in
my leadership techniques,” explained
Schmoyer.
St. Thomas’ MBA classes are offered primarily
on Friday evenings, and Saturday
or Sunday mornings, with an occasional
week night and online class. Each class
meets for nine sessions. The program
provides students with the option of
choosing among Finance, Marketing,
Management or a self designed concentration.
Students with prior undergraduate
or graduate work can have up to 24
credits waived. Full-time students can
complete the remaining 33 credits in one
year, but the majority of students, like
Jake, are working professionals who
pursue an MBA part-time.
“Many of the instructors here at STAC
are or were executives and entrepreneurs.
I found that they were able to link the
material to actual business experiences
effectively. Upon retirement, I am considering
teaching MBA classes myself. I
enjoy training and I believe I would have
a lot to offer students after I complete my
MBA.”
Jake currently resides in Chester, New
York, with his wife of nine years, Stacy
and his 5 year old son, Josh. He completed
his undergraduate degree in
Economics and International Relations
from the Virginia Military Institute in
1990. Jake also served in the Marine
Corps from 1990-1997.
IN MEMORIAM
KEN REDDIN AUGUST 21, 1930 – SEPTEMBER 8, 2007
Kenneth Reddin was an associate professor
of business administration (and chairperson
of the division) at St. Thomas
from 1978 until his retirement in 1994.
He was granted emeritus status upon
retirement. Ken was instrumental in initiating
the college’s international business
program. Several colleagues sent their
memories of Ken to his family. The following
is an excerpt of Dr. Denton May’s
remarks which were read at Ken’s memorial
service. Dr. May served as Academic
Dean during Ken’s tenure at the College.
“During my tenure at the college, Sears
offered a monetary award to be given to
an outstanding teacher at each of the
small regional colleges. I chose Ken
Reddin for his fabulous record as a professor
who traveled all over the world and
brought back to the classroom rich funds
of information and analyses, apropos of
world markets, and comparative financial
structures.
“He was a first-class mind of capacious
memory with a talent for penetrating
analyses of economic theory and principles,
and he conducted himself with
integrity. He enriched his classes with his
up-to-date knowledge of the international
economic scene, and delighted them with
his classroom humor.”
FALL 2008
FROM LARGE TO SMALL, TEACHER FINDS RIGHT FIT
Katie Yatto graduated from the University
of Delaware in 2005 with a B.S. in
Education with a concentration in mathematics.
As she was preparing to choose a
program to complete her Masters in
Education, St. Thomas’ M.S.Ed. Program
stood out because her mother Jeanne
Yatto-Goldberg graduated from the
M.S.Ed. program in 2003; and sister,
Meredith Yatto graduated from the
M.S.T. program in 2005. Although both
family members were extremely happy
with the program, Katie had some trepidation
entering a program in a small
college since she had finished her undergraduate
degree at a large university.
Katie’s apprehension did not last long.
After taking just one class, Katie found
herself tremendously motivated. She was
impressed with the level of study in her
classes. All of her professors taught the
newest techniques and strategies for
teaching.
"The courses built upon what I learned in
undergrad. I became more aware of
what I was doing in my classroom, and I
became more research based to support
my teaching. The balance of pedagogy
and research is the most important thing
a teacher can learn in an M.S.Ed.
program,” says Katie.
The M.S.Ed. is a 36-credit program
designed for students who completed
their undergraduate work in education.
Students can choose to specialize in
Literacy, Special Education or Educational
Leadership. Katie’s concentration is
Literacy.
The College also offers a Master of
Science in Teaching program for students
who hold an undergraduate degree in a
major other than teacher education, but
would now like to pursue a career in
teaching at the elementary or secondary
level.
Katie has been greatly encouraged by the
program and its professors. She believes
that this program is wonderful for those
who are trying to increase their knowledge
of education and who are willing to
work for it. “You get out of the program
what you put in. You need to be open to
new things and be prepared to work. This
program is best suited for students who
want to become better teachers.”
In the past year, Katie has learned something
in every class that she could bring
to work with her.
“I learned things in class, and was able to
use them the next day in my own classroom,”
said Katie, a sixth grade teacher
at West Brook Middle School in Paramus
(NJ).
She has a year left in the program and
although her undergraduate study was
focused on the secondary level, Katie
plans to switch her focus to the elementary
grades of study based on the inspiration
of one of her professors.
SUMMER LITERACY PROGRAM BUILDS CONFIDENCE IN YOUNG STUDENTS
The College hosts a summer literacy program
for students, grades 1-8, who struggle
in reading. The program encourages
confidence in the students and prepares
them for their fall coursework. Students
are individually mentored by participants
in the STAC Graduate Literacy Program.
Parental feedback on the program indicates
a lasting impression on student’s
achievement and local teachers commend
the program on its quality.
The students participated in the Reading
With Dogs program during its final week.
This group trains dogs to be excellent listeners,
creating an environment for students
to develop their reading skills with a
canine-receptive audience. The experience
is unique and research shows that
this program makes a significant impact
on motivation to read, fluency, and reading
achievement.
Nicholas Taussi, 7, reads to his audience.
The program hosted its “Author
Celebration,” a culminating event that celebrates
the research projects completed
by each student during the program. Here
the students demonstrated their progress
with oral presentations featuring the students’
original research on a topic of interest.
“This experience provides a vision of
what can be accomplished for readers and
writers who struggle when expert teachers
apply expert instruction,” commented Dr.
Michael Shaw, Professor of Education and
Director of the Summer Literacy Clinic.
In addition, Dr. Evan Matthews, Assistant
Professor of Music, and co-teacher of the
course organized Reader’s Theater, an
instructional method where students dramatize
scripts of stories, poems, or original
writing by reading them aloud. Dr.
Matthews taught the students how to
incorporate music into their reading by
playing a wide variety of instruments,
including drums and other percussion
instruments, piano, cymbals, bells, and
whistles.
FALL 2008
STRATEGIC ACADEMIC ALLIANCE
Advancing academic excellence is a priority at St. Thomas Aquinas
College. As part of this commitment the College has established
strategic alliances with a number of major universities and colleges
that are enabling our students to take their studies to the next
level. Institutions that are part of the alliance programs include
The George Washington University, Pace University, Manhattan
College, New York Medical College, St. John’s University, Barry
University School of Law and Polytechnic University.
For two cousins, STAC graduates, Lauren McCarthy, ’06 and
Melissa Laginestra, ’07, the College’s alliance with New York
University School of Social Work, meant a chance to earn their
Master of Social Work right here in Sparkill. While NYU has held
classes at STAC for a number of years, this winter NYU has
agreed to welcome qualifying seniors to apply to the new accelerated
BS/MSW program.
This past May, Lauren graduated from the NYU program. When
asked about her experience Lauren noted that, “This was an
incredibly intense program, the most intense of my life. You need
support and taking my classes here in an intimate environment
really helped me deal with the stress and the pressure. But it was
all worth it, I love what I am doing.”
Lauren’s mom, Rochelle McCarthy summed up the value of the
STAC/NYU experience best when she said. “There is the classroom
learning, there are the internships, but more than that the
professors here on campus help the students to cope and deal with
the realities of the profession…they are mentors to these students.”
Melissa echoes many of Lauren’s sentiments about the program,
sentiments that are shared by so many of their fellow students.
“The smaller classroom setting, the fact that I wasn’t just a number
this is why I came to St. Thomas in the first place. Now with the
NYU program I still get the best of what I loved about STAC”
remarked Melissa.
Lauren McCarthy and Melissa Laginestra at NYU’s Graduate Ceremony.
Melissa’s dad is Michael Laginestra, a member of the College’s
Board of Trustees and Vice Chairman of CB Richard Ellis.
“The great people who make up the St. Thomas Aquinas community
worked hard to assure that Melissa’s experience on the
undergraduate, and now the graduate level, not only met but
exceeded her expectations and mine. This is just one of many
reasons I am delighted to be a trustee of St. Thomas Aquinas
and support the mission of this fine institution,” Mr. Laginestra
commented.
MATCHING GIFT SUPPORT
Just imagine how wonderful it would be
to have your $250 gift of support to St.
Thomas Aquinas turn instantly into a
$500 gift or even a $750 gift and you
don’t even have to write another check!
Corporate matching gift programs are
designed specifically to back the giving
interests of its employees by offering
financial support that most often will
double the value of that gift and in some
cases can triple the gift value.
Sadly, not all businesses have matching
gift programs. Speak to your human
resources representative to learn more
about the charitable giving programs
offered by your company. If matching
gifts is an option, the HR representative
will guide you through the process as well
as let you know what the annual cap is on
gift requests.
Spread the word…if you have a friend or
family member supporting St. Thomas
Aquinas, remind them to check out the
matching gift options where they work.
ALUMNI WEEKEND 2008
This year’s Alumni Weekend events
included something for everyone. We
kicked off the weekend with a local happening
at The Black Bear Saloon in
Nyack, New York, where alumni gathered
and laughed about over 20 years of
STAC memories.
The weather cooperated when 55 alumni
family and friends gathered outside of
Marian Hall and boarded a luxury bus for
a last look at the “House that Ruth built.”
The Yankees beat the Mariners that day
and a good time was had by all.
when they enjoyed great seats to Monty
Python’s Spamalot. It was Clay Aiken’s
last day on this show.
