FALL/HARVEST ISSUE NO. 65 SEPTEMBER 2013

WORDS FROM WARREN
The Reverend Warren Leibovitch
Incumbent
Dear friends,
I cannot believe how fast the last four months have gone for me, a vacation plus three months of a Sabbath (sabbatical) leave!
I had lots of plans and hopes for my first break in thirteen years. Many were accomplished, a few I still hope to do.
A Sabbath leave is a combination of professional development and rest. While I was off I read several books, some on congregational
development and Social Media, and some books for spiritual food.
Also while on Sabbath leave, I was able to attend a conference in Alexandria, Virginia, at the Virginia Theological Seminary.
The title of the conference was called-"eFormation: Faith for a connected, digital world”. Participating in workshops and networking
opportunities was Clergy, Christian education professionals and communicators. Presenters focused on ways to integrate social media,
online tools and electronic resources into church ministry. Participants learned about creating effective videos, web conferencing, tips
for blogging and much more.
Other goals of my Sabbath leave were to attend other churches and/or visit clergy to discuss their styles of worship and types of
programs they have created for those parishes.
Over the next few months I will attempt to share my insights and information through informal meetings, and possibly in some sermons.
Now summer is over, it is time to get back on track and focus on the busy fall season ahead of us! Sunday school begins September
8th, Welcome Back Sunday September 15th, the Lindsay Fair September 18-22, and Harvest Happenings and Mystery Dinner in
October. I hope to have a day away with the Advisory board in October – a “Planning / Vision Day”. I also hope to set up a leadership
training series with the support of Canon Phil Bristow to train current and hopeful group leaders for the coming year. The date will be
set in late in October. Watch for further information.
If you are new to the parish, I look forward to getting to know you now that I am back from my time off. Please take a moment to
introduce yourself to me!
May God guide us and empower us as we begin a very busy year!
Blessings and peace,
WARDEN’S WALK
Barb Truax, Rector’s Warden
W
elcome back to all! Fall is now upon
us and we anticipate the upcoming
renewal of friendships and activities.
We welcomed back The Reverend Warren on September 3 rd
from his Sabbath and vacation and hope that he was able to
experience a renewal of his energies and education. A time
away is always inspirational for the journey ahead.
There have been numerous events and services since our last
edition of the Grapevine and you will find them reported by
their convenors elsewhere in this newsletter – the
Congregational Meeting on July 14 th , the Kidz Club, the Youth
East Coast Mission trip and the Strawberry Supper and many
more.
Many things are on the horizon – Thanksgiving Service
preparations, St. Paul’s ‘Food Booth at the Lindsay Fair,
Harvest Happenings, the annual Mystery Dinner Theatre,
Happy Cooks etc. – all of which you will also find outlined in
this issue. Mark your calendars for all these dates! We look
forward to much fellowship and service to God.
Over the summer, the Wardens have had to deal with
challenging financial and other decisions. When we were
denied a grant application to cover start-up costs for additional
ministries in the parish, we were forced into rethinking our
financial goals and to realign our future Christian pathway.
After some prayerful and thoughtful discussions with both our
own parishioners and with Bishop Linda Nicholls (our
immediate supervising contact with The Reverend Warren
away) we feel we have begun to set new directions. These will
be brought forward to Advisory Council this month and to the
congregation for input following that. To assist us in some of
these new directions, a Finance Committee was established
during the summer months. It has already brought forth
recommendations that will go forward to Advisory Council this
month. See page 5 for additional information on this new
committee. After having the plans redrawn for our Barrier-free
Ramp to obtain a building permit, we have now received word
from the contractor that the project cost has increased. We will
have to determine our “next steps” for this. We will need your
future prayers and support in the upcoming days and weeks to
resolve these situations.
Our new Archivists, Pat and Ross Smyth, as you may be
aware they are finding some very interesting documents (one
being ‘pew rentals) pertaining to St. Paul’s. These will be
outlined in future editions of the Grapevine under “St. Paul’s
Archives / Our Legacy”. Watch for these articles.
If you have any queries, please contact the church office –
T
FINANCIAL REPORT
o date in 2013 our expenses have exceeded our income. The fundraisers (Food Booth, Harvest Happenings, Mystery night dinner
etc.) which take place in the fall will rectify some of this situation. A Finance Committee has been established with a view to review
the church’s financial position and make recommendations to the wardens.
Barb Truax, Rector’s Warden
T
FINANCE COMMITTEE
his past summer, a Finance Committee was formed as a sub-committee to the Wardens. Their goal is to advise the Wardens on
new pathways that might be used to control the expenditures of the Church. It will also review various financial practices and
procedures being used by the church, make suggestions as to changes or improvements and review investments and accounting
practices.
Terms of Reference will be amended and will continue to be a ‘work in progress’ over the next few months. The final version will be
submitted to Advisory Council and to the congregation for approval at Vestry.
Members of this Committee are – Tom Ross, Chairperson; Lutie Ann Presley, Larry Todd, Judy Sedgley and Barb Truax as Warden.
The Wardens thank these individuals for accepting this new responsibility by giving of their valuable time.
St. Paul’s Stewardship Committee
O
ARE YOU ON PAR
ver the preceding winter and spring, the Stewardship Committee has been advertising the existence and benefits of St. Paul’s
PAR program with the hope of increasing the number of parishioners that make use of this service. While I’m sure that most
parishioners are now aware of this program (and have considered using it), I’ll repeat the details here for those who may still not be
aware of the importance of this program to our financial stability.
For those of you not familiar with the term “PAR” or “Pre-Authorized Remittance”, you may be familiar with its use to regularly pay your
phone, cable or gas bills or other regular financial commitments that you may have. The St. Paul’s PAR program works the same way
- it handles your weekly offertory automatically so that you don’t have to.
While there are several benefits to parishioners as well as to the church, the primary advantage to the church is a regular flow of income,
uninterrupted by missed services, summers at the cottage, winters in Florida, etc. Studies have shown that parishes with a high PAR
participation rate tend to have a higher rate of givings compared to low participation parishes. As most of you are probably aware, St.
Paul’s has been operating in a financial deficit position and everyone is looking at various ways to help us balance our budget. I would
suggest to you that enrolling in the PAR program is a relatively painless and simple way for all of us to assist in tackling our deficit and to
support the many good things that are happening at St. Paul’s.
So please, take a moment to pick up a PAR pamphlet (located in the
pamphlet holders as you enter the church or from the church office) and consider answering “yes” to the question at the top of the
pamphlet – “Are you on PAR”
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING (Adapted) JULY 14, 2013
OPENING PRAYER – The Reverend Bob Hartley gave the opening prayer.
WELCOME TO ALL – At 11:10 a.m. Warden Dave Golding welcomed the 63 people in attendance. Mr. Golding referred to the
challenge made in the Vision Statement to “Know Jesus and Make Him Known”. The purpose of the meeting was to inform the
congregation of the financial situation that St. Paul’s is facing at the moment.
REVIEW OF THE LETTER SENT TO THE PARISH MEMBERS – Mr. Golding noted that St. Paul’s has been dealing with a number of
challenges, both spiritually and physically this past year. He accepted that there has been a lack of due diligence and protocol carried
out in certain situations. He mentioned that the Youth Ministry should be continued and that part-time positions to support seniors and
children in the parish would be welcomed and needed ministries. These ministries could be initially financed using seed money from
the Diocese but we would have to grow our revenues to continue them in future years. In 2002, St. Paul’s understood that they would
receive a grant of $30,000 for the Youth programme for 2013 and we received $10,000.00 of that at that time. We thought that we only
needed to reapply in 2013 for the additional $20,000.00. The Reverend Warren Leibovitch put in an application for $187,000.00 in early
May before he left on his Sabbatical. This was to cover the salaries of a full-time Youth Pastor plus a Children’s coordinator and a
senior’s Pastor. We were turned down “carte blanche”. Dave Golding asked the question: How do we fund the Youth pastor for 1014 -
2015 The Warden met with Bishop Linda Nicholls who said that St. Paul’s needs to prove more sustainability for the future years.
OUR SOLUTIONS TO FUND YOUTH MINISTRY FOR 2013
(a) Increased givings-raise by $1.00 each week would equal $12,000.00 and meet our obligation to Dave Edney.
(b) Grown the church. There has not been an increase in the number of families.
Youth programme, a Christian-driven Outreach programme, is bringing in kids-teenagers.
(c) Gift cards—more usage required.
(d) PAR—need more support of the programme
ADDITIONAL WAYS
(a) New service—bring next generation in to the church
(b) Bishop Linda advised that our application for a 2014 grant be submitted.
.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Harold Brown: How is this shortfall going to be funded Will it deplete our cash-in-hand Answer: Dave Golding: The Wardens do not
intend to touch our investments this year. If that is required a Special Vestry must be held. Harold Brown: 3 areas where there is
money that we could use. 1. Music Fund—no Music Director since Arlene’s resignation
2. Rector’s discretionary Fund-Rector on Sabbatical leave—not using Fund
3. Planned purchase of audio visual equipment-church cannot afford this now
Answer: 1. Part of music allocation is now being used to bring in organists each Sunday
2. Rector’s Discretionary Fund is simply that – at the behest of the Rector
3. There are no audiovisual funds set aside at the present time. Purchase of equipment would have to be budgeted or raised.
Don Tansey: Squeeze more money out of the parishioners. Increase the congregation with special services. Give more support to
the Youth Pastor. Answer – Frank Mills: We are working on a service tailored for the under 40 crowd. There is a need for it. Many
younger people find the church intimidating.
Garnet Powell: St. Paul’s hit a low point in the 70’s. Ernie Lowen was Rector and there were many structural problems to deal with. A
Talent Fund was started which instigated such events as the Pancake Supper, Fair Food Booth, Strawberry Supper and more. With
regard to the letter sent to the congregation it was too bad that the children’s programme had been shelved—was this due to a lack of
funding The good news was that the Diocese turned down the request for $187,000.00. We cannot afford these programmes. I
suggest that we consider a part-time senior’s ministry like that in place years ago—2 days a week—to be started ASAP.
Paul Carpentier: I concur with Garnett’s statements. We cannot sustain these programmes and also we need to be invested in any
programmes not just rely on a hand-out from the Diocese. We need to be realistic—do we really need these positions We need good
budgeting practices.
Brenda O’Keefe: We are a congregation of seniors. I will donate a diamond ring to help cover costs. Dave Golding: Thank you
Brenda—that won’t be necessary.
Bob Whitfield: We need to be tapping in to the many newly retired people coming to Lindsay. These are folks in their early sixties.
Gina Coleman: We need more transparency with regard to our finances. We should not make commitments that we cannot pay for.
The money needs to be there (i.e. grants) before we start programmes and hire new staff. There needs to be due diligence and we
require a Finance Committee to oversee our expenditures.
St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Lindsay, ON 705-324-4666 office-st-pauls-lindsay.ca www.st-pauls-lindsay.ca 6

Paul Carpentier: I thought that we had a Finance Committee. Wasn’t that accepted at Vestry 2013 If not one needs to be set-up and
it need to be at arms-length.
Wayne Edney: All you people ever talk about is money. You need to pray more and believe that prayer will result in the money being
found.
Barbara Truax: The building permit for the ramp at the back of the church has arrived and the work will start shortly. This has been
paid for with a grant from the chest Fund.
SUMMARY AND THANK YOU
ST. PAUL’S MISSION: PAST AND PRESENT
(A synopsis of the 2013 “Welcome Back Sunday” talk and the 2011 “175 th Anniversary” stories)
T
Rev. John Vicars Rev. Samuel Weston-Jones Rev. Charles Henry Marsh
hey are seven simple words, easy to remember but fundamental to all we believe in and do as committed church workers. Phrased
many ways in the past, they carried us through 175 year of our life. Phrased as we now know them, they grew out of renewal
workshops in 2010 and flowed through our 175 th Anniversary in 2011. They are our mission for renewal: “To know Jesus and make
him known”.
Back before those Anniversary celebrations, we had started digging into St. Paul’s archives in order to write newspaper articles about
who we were in the past, what kind of road we traveled to get here and why we have been successful. We soon realized we needed to
know more about our present and future as part of that long story. That’s when we learned about the workshops: how some of you
came together to define our core values, create those seven words and build the six-part vision that grew out of it: outreach, small
group action, youth and families, worship practices, space and facilities, and stewardship. Intrigued, we asked Rev. Warren a question:
“How do we ensure our success” He said: “our renewal approach must be so clear and inspiring that each of us can easily
understand our mission, vision and core values and actively take part”.
We returned to our research and story-writing with the insights we gained from this, and soon began sensing two “self-evident truths”
about renewals: First: if a church doesn’t periodically re-examine its past and present before choosing a fresh future, it will start
spinning its wheels and become spiritually stale. And second: a successful renewal requires three critical components: a deep
commitment to good works; a sustaining faith; and a congregation that resolves its issues with respect and love, and when all three
exist, its impact can multiply that faith and those good works beyond bounds.
It was true in our past. Each era had its own social perspectives and issues but each successful renewal had the same combination of
faith, good works and a loving congregation. Three examples:
In 1855, six people met in Lindsay’s old town hall where our services were held by travelling missionaries. John Thirkell, Thomas
Patrick, George Roche, John Bryans, J. H. Coulter and Joshua Fidler. They had been working together for a decade to prepare the
way for a first church and rector. Land was finally available on Kent Street and the funds to build and hire had been worked out. But
they shouldn’t have been able to work together. They came from different parts of the world, had different jobs and different
St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Lindsay, ON 705-324-4666 office-st-pauls-lindsay.ca www.st-pauls-lindsay.ca 7

perspectives on life. But they took on a near-impossible task and made it happen. We think we know why. If we were to say those
seven words to them in 1855, they would likely have said back, “yes”! That overrode anything that made us different”.
So they talked the Diocese into releasing the land, chose Rev. John Vicars from Ireland and built that beautiful clapboard church on
Kent Street.
In 1883, Rev. Samuel Weston-Jones from Gloucestershire became our rector. By this time, “Old St. Paul’s” was deteriorating. We were
crowded inside and surrounded by the noise and smells of livery stables and butcher shops. Some wanted to repair and expand the old
church. Others wanted to sell and build a larger church. We fought. We lost friends. Then our rector and some steady church leaders
stepped forward and spoke bluntly to us about placing our church community above our personal preferences. We stopped bickering,
started praying and found compromises. But we still needed land. One of those steady people was Harriet Hudspeth. She spoke to her
husband, Adam, a church warden and future M.P. Next day, he offered their land on Russell Street and “New St. Paul’s” was built. We
think they re-visited a mission statement that mirrored ours today.
In 1887, Rev. Charles Henry Marsh became our rector. He was at Orillia and first refused us because he had goals to complete there.
But we were persuasive. It almost reads as if the mafia showed up. “One Sunday three strange men appeared at St. James’ Church,
Orillia and, after the service, had a chat with the curate”. So he came, and by 1890, it felt as if an engine had been freshly tuned; that a
successful renewal had begun. The annual “Report of St. Paul’s Sunday School” spoke of 22 teachers and 298 students. We poured
energy into more activities and causes. Our children sent toys to poor native children. Our Women’s Auxiliary directed craft goods to
those in need around the country. Every child helped and we praised any small thing they did: “The ‘Little Girls Sewing Class with great
pleasure handed in Ten Dollars”. It seemed as if today’s mission statement was happening then.
But now we’re back in the present. This summer, we were called together in a “Congregational Meeting” to learn that financial problems
might require compromises on our vision goals. We offered ideas and expressed many worries. Then a warden answered one question
by saying: “Well, it’s ‘to know Jesus and make him known”. Our advice suddenly changed. We began to say: “Let’s view this as a
challenge; as a way to re-commit to our mission”.
Our current renewal began with the workshops and our 175 th Anniversary and is still happening. It compels us to continue our
commitment to those three cornerstones: good works; deep faith; a loving congregation. It requires us to meet our financial
challenges so we don’t compromise our vision. But equally important, it obligates us to renew our commitment to simply helping out.
Those who keep stepping forward on our behalf are wearing out. They need us. This year’s renewal phase is about to happen. Let’s
take up the challenge and join them. And please remember why we would do that; what is at the center of everything we believe in and
do: “To know Jesus and make him known”.
Worship:
Outreach:
Our Mission: “To know Jesus and make Him known”
Our Vision
We envision a church where worship is Christ-centered. We see people of different backgrounds joyfully gathered
to praise and honour the Lord Jesus.
We envision a church that is actively engaged in a variety of ministries including those struggling with poverty and
the marginalized in the community. We will be an intentionally evangelistic church community that is involved in
local and global missions through the provision of short term mission opportunities and financial support.
Small Groups: We see a vibrant church of small groups where everyone can experience Christ’s true community. We see many
different kinds of groups that will provide an atmosphere of safety and acceptance, sharing and caring, learning
and serving and growing in their faith.
Youth and Family: We envision a church where age appropriate ministry is designed to help all who attend to grow and become
fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Finances:
Facilities:
We envision a church where every individual is aware of stewardship responsibilities and participates in the
financial life of the church.
We see a highly visible, multi-use facility that is both welcoming and available. We see a facility that provides
adequate space for our current ministries and is flexible to accommodate our growth and future ministries, as we
double and triple in size.
CHURCH PROPERTY UPDATE
Don Brohm
Church Property Manager
Just so you know!
I
t is hard to believe that summer is over and the leaves are
starting to change. With the approach of fall comes the usual
fall maintenance.
Heating – Link Heating will check all houses for their annual
cleaning and servicing. (Link has opened a store in Lindsay
and sell quality filters for your furnace at I believe the best
price anywhere).
Houses – All our houses continue to be fully rented. We had a
tenant leave (they moved into a house). Our latest downpour
of rain showed that we did not have all the leaks repaired. We
have some dead tree limbs that must come down before they
cause trouble around the houses. In 2014 some new shingles
will be needed.
Church & buildings – The church slate roof was repaired and
I have not heard of anymore leaks nor have I seen any-more
damaged slate. We have damaged and broken brick on the
outside of the church and hall that will be repaired before the
cold weather comes. The kitchen floor was repaired (damaged
and broken tile).
ORDINARY JANES & JOES UPDATE
Don Brohm
Coordinator
T
he ‘Janes and Joes’ continue to work on
small jobs around the church. As
reported in the June 2013 issue of the
Grapevine, we have added more shelving to the east end of
the cloakroom and have upgraded some lighting in the
stairways with more energy efficient light bulbs. We installed a
temporary fence in the courtyard for the Kid's Camp for July
and August.
There never seems to be a shortage of jobs to do.
MUSIC NOTES
Douglas Copp
T
he position of Organist and Choir Director at St. Paul’s has
not been filled, as yet. With the cooperation of Stephen
Peasgood, Bob Tompkins and myself we have attempted to fill
the vacancy. It is not the best solution for the choir. To the
faithful members who volunteer every Sunday to lead us in
praise as choir members, we owe a debt of gratitude. They
are truly appreciated.
This is a good opportunity for some people in our congregation
to join us. We meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. for
just over an hour and we hope to see some new faces appear.
There is strength in numbers and there is opportunity to sing in
unison if you are unsure about singing in parts.
In case you missed reading about our grand piano in the
sanctuary, I will try to lay out what has transpired this spring.
The electronic piano that was used in the sanctuary for many
years was beginning to have issues with volume etc. The
donor (Frances Slade) kindly gave us permission to move it
into the church hall where it is still being used.
Arlene Gray and myself had planned to start a fund-raising
campaign to buy a new Grand Piano for our church. We had
set ten thousand dollars as a target. However, when Arlene
resigned her position, we decided not to move forward with our
plans. She gave us use of one of her pianos to be used in the
church until it was needed elsewhere.
In April, her piano was moved to Peterborough and Rev.
Warren requested that we begin a search for a new instrument.
We began to request donations from our parishioners and Dr.
Fred Weir was asked to join me in a search for a new
instrument. I did a search on the internet and found a piano
that I felt would serve our church for many years. It is a
Samick 5’ grand that is seven years old and was from a private
home in Courtice, Ontario and had been scarcely used.
Through consultation with the wardens of our church, we
purchased the instrument and it is now installed in our
sanctuary.
The fundraising came about the same time that our church
found itself with other financial obligations. Approximately
twenty-five hundred dollars had already been donated by some
of our generous members and I suggested that we use money
that had been left to the music department from two estates
and one private donor to pay for the remainder of the
instrument. The Advisory Board passed a motion to use
money that George Inrig had donated to complete the
purchase price. Moving costs, buying and installing a humidity
device, tuning (and eventually having the piano rest on a
moveable platform) are all covered by these monies. Thus, no
money from the General Budget was used to finance the
piano. For your information, Designated Givings #146 for
music, gowns etc. have been accumulating money that is
donated by our church family. Any unused money will be used
for upkeep of the organ and pianos and to purchase new music
for the choir in the future.
Thank you to all who have been part of this venture. If you
have further questions, please speak to me or the wardens.
SUNDAY SCHOOL: SEPTEMBER - JUNE
Co-ordinator Anne Tamlin
A Sunday school program is a wonderful way to teach children the stories of God’s word. Our growing Sunday
school offers a new curriculum – “Seasons of the Spirit” – this curriculum is Lectionary based and offers Bible
stories that are age appropriate.
“Seasons’ vision is for Christianity lived in a culturally diverse and religiously pluralistic world:
to be signs of God’s liberating, compassionate and inclusive love, and to grow in our relationship with God.
Seasons continues to nurture faith through liturgy, ritual, imagination, and to encourage Christian growth
through worshiping, learning, and serving together. Our true curriculum is how we live our lives together.”
We anticipate an increase of children as result of a successful Kid’s Club that was held one day a week in July
and August. Now we more than every need your help! We need extra Sunday school leaders and helpers.
Please speak to Reverend Warren at your convenience if you can help one Sunday every 4-6 weeks and
continue the spiritual work begun this summer with our children.
NEW CHRISTIAN DAYCARE
Jessica Drury
Freelance Writer
(705)878-1773
jdrury002@gmail.com
T
he decision to create a daycare at Heritage Christian School has been a long time coming. The idea which aligns with the
Christian Reformed philosophy that Christian Education takes place from the cradle to the grave was first put forth in 2006. HCS
also sees it as a great way to expand their ministry. After countless hours and major renovations in preparation for the daycare the
time has finally come. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the
heavens.” The new daycare at HCS will be opening in October after much prayer and hard work.
It will be called the Tot Spot. The daycare will have 5 spaces available for 18 months – 30 months and 16 spaces for 30 months – 4
years. They will operate from 6:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The fee rates are based on the age of the child and
whether or not the child is enrolled full-time or part-time. Parents can expect the standard adult to child ratios as set by the Day
Nurseries Act (1:5 for 18 months – 30 months, 1:8 for 30 months – 4 years).
The Tot Spot will be run separately, in accordance with the Day Nurseries Act, but will be considered an integral part of Heritage
Christian School. There will be a Christian emphasis but Principal Kim Bolton promises that, like the rest of the school, “it will be open
to all families”.
A new addition has been built and it is this new collection of rooms that will house the daycare. The main playroom is spacious and
bright with large windows, colourful rugs and toys awaiting discovery. They also have a separate fenced-in outdoor play area that is a
combination of patio stones and grass.
Principal Bolton is looking forward to introducing more members of the community to the caring, dedicated staff and the wonderful
services that HCS has to offer through the Tot Spot this fall. They have hired the daycare supervisor and at the time of the interview
were in the process of hiring the rest of the staff. Everyone is busy making sure things are ready to go for October.
There is also the possibility of an after school program for older students, run separately in the gymnasium, if enough interest is
expressed.
If you would like more information or would like to make an appointment to tour the facilities please call (705)324-8363 or email
hcs_office@bellnet.ca the school. If you would like to support the important ministry at HCS donations can be made at the school or by
indicating Heritage Christian School on your envelope and of course support through prayer is always needed and welcomed.
CANCELLED POSTAGE STAMPS
K
eep the stamps coming! A sincere thank you to the many
parishioners who, have turned in thousands of used
postage stamps. The Canadian Bible Society is very pleased
with the copious number of stamps from our church. They sell
the stamps to a broker and use the money derived from the
sale for the Society’s translation of our bible into third world
languages. The demand for these bibles is always very great.
I can handle any quantity, but, if you
trim them, be sure to leave at least a
quarter-inch of envelope around the
stamps. All used stamps, Canadian, or
foreign in any condition are accepted.
“Paul was in hospital for a month,
the last two weeks in rehab. He is
home again and his wife Barbara
says “we are coping”.
Barbara picked up the stamps that
have accumulated throughout the
summer months and she said he has
spent the last hour and a half looking
over them. Barbara asked if he is
ready to give the job over to
someone else, but he says "no".
Paul will be 93 years young on November 6 th and he still
finds time to volunteer for St. Paul’s. He has been
trimming used postage stamps for us since he took over
the position from Hazel Harpur in 2001. Thank you Paul
for being such a dedicated worker we appreciate all you
do to help the Canadian Bible Society provide Bibles to
third world countries.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Barbara as
you continue to recover your health and strength.
ur numbers have been high during the
summer months. However, our clients
have been blessed with fresh produce donated
from local gardens and farms and is very much
appreciated. Some of our volunteers make
sure that certain vegetables and staples, such as rice, are
supplied with instructions on how to use and cook these items.
It is most helpful, as there are many people who do not know
what to do with squash, kale, etc.
Please try and bring at least one or two items for the CFC
basket, every week. The basket is found at the back of the
church and is emptied weekly. Our Designated givings # 215
is for the Central Food Cupboard for the month of
September. The need is great and every donation is
greatly appreciated.
SAGES Sessions Return - Community Care's Sage Advice
and Gentle Exercise for Seniors (SAGES) has been scheduled
in many locations throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes.
SAGES is a volunteer-led falls prevention program that
focuses on education and gentle exercises. The exercises are
designed to help participants increase strength and balance.
The exercises are low-impact and can be done by participants
whether they are able to stand or sit in a chair. There is also a
nutritional education component to the classes, and they also
provide an opportunity for participants to enjoy social outings
on a weekly basis. Cost to participate is reasonable (most
classes ask participants to contribute to the cost of healthy
snacks and refreshments) and more information about times
and locations can be found on the Community Care website, or
through any of the agency's offices.
October - Community Care Month - Community Care will
present several promotional events and initiatives in October,
to mark Community Health and Wellbeing Week and
Community Support Services Month. The agency is presenting
an information day featuring several local service providers
and agencies on October 1 st at Lindsay Square 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Other events include a "services showcase", weekly radio
E.T.A. (Encouraging Travelling Alone)
Donna Gushue, coordinator
T
wo different activities have been scheduled in September and early October.
MYSTERY TOURS followed by lunch at a restaurant is a fun
opportunity to try out the Lindsay bus and see where it goes. On Friday
the 13 th five of us took the red route for an hour’s tour of Lindsay south of
Kent St. None of us had taken this bus before and we were intrigued to see
where it goes and how easy it was for those with walkers, baby strollers etc.
With permission of the bus driver and the few passengers at the beginning,
Brenda O’Keefe had us singing a hymn as best we could on the bumpy road.
As the bus became crowded we did not continue but the original effort
certainly started conversation with the delightful passengers beside us. We
are looking forward to the next tour because we feel comfortable now that we
figured out how easy it is and how helpful the driver was in finding out what
stop people wanted and who needed a ramp lowered.
In summary, we laughed so hard on the bus that we worked up an appetite and felt at ease with our group (one person was new to
St. Paul’s). The result was conversation at lunch was which was very supportive and fun.
Next tour – Monday, September 23 rd , please sign on the bulletin board so we can decide which bus or buses to take and at
which restaurant to eat. The actual time for the bus may change depending on the restaurant chosen. Park your car at the Lindsay
Mall entrance closest to Target. Meet at 10:15 a.m. outside near the bus stop to start our tour. Bring $1.50 – I have the tokens.
Sign-up is required.
If you want to know more about this activity, contact Donna Gushue at 705-328-3692 and discuss what is happening
A sign-up sheet will be posted on the church bulletin-board. Note the "missing" week is when the Fair is on and many of you will be
volunteering. You may come each week or choose one---the restaurant will be different each time. We will go for an hour's trip on one
of the bus routes before lunch.
BREAKFAST MEETING – “How to get the best support” is the theme for Saturday, October 5 th at 9:00 am. A sign–up notice will
be put on the bulletin board. New people always welcome but we do need numbers to plan for set-up and food. The evolving plan for
the day will probably be divided between: small group discussion regarding support and a review of activities that group members are
interested in planning and doing with others.
F
ETA MUSINGS
Donna Gushue, Small Group Ministry Facilitator
HAVE YOU EVER FELT ALONE
eelings are personal and individual. There are times that we are less able to cope and it is during those times that having friends
that care makes a big difference. At St. Paul’s a group started that is fun and provides opportunity to meet with other
parishioners who live alone or attend activities alone by chance or choice. Anyone is welcome to participate with us. If you are new to
St. Paul’s or Lindsay or you just want to meet new people, please join us. We do try to mix and make new acquaintances and break
away from the comfort of sitting beside our “old” friends.
Fellowship is our purpose. The dictionary states that fellowship means the state of sharing mutual interests, activities etc., it also
means companionship and friendship. The name of this group, “E.T.A.” (Encourage Traveling Alone) is an acronym used for now
because it is easy to remember and can be changed as the group develops a focus or emerges into several small groups. In six
months 28 parishioners have participated at least once and some almost every time at the variety of activities: five restaurant lunches,
two church breakfasts meetings, one excursion to Peterborough to a show and dinner, and one to the Globus theater.
If we have missed you or you would like to know more please call me at 705-328-3692.
My challenge to YOU is to call someone right now to join you and to volunteer with you at the many opportunities at St. Paul’s this fall.
Perhaps you met someone who needs a ride in order to volunteer or who just needs you to ask them to go with you to an activity. For
those of you who have been at St. Paul’s for years, I think you would be amazed at how difficult it is to volunteer or to ask questions
when one is unfamiliar with this church and its organization. Please reach out to others. The quiet person in the corner needs you as
does the person with the smiles and jokes. For some people it is hard to ask for help or show vulnerability.
Join us and reach out and Love your neighbour.
GIFT/SHOPPING
CARD PROGRAM
Kay Smith and Bill Witham
O
nce again we are
promoting the gift card
program at St. Paul’s. At a
time when church revenues
are decreasing and expenses are on their way up, fund raising
fills an essential need. We raise funds in various ways but one
of the easiest methods is through the use of gift cards. Why
Because the use of these cards does not reduce your
income. You get full value for the amount you purchase and
the church gets a percentage without it costing you anything. I
see an entrepreneur in Niagara Diocese is now offering a
whole gamut of cards to churches where they only purchase
what they have buyers for. They do not have to order a large
quantity and then have to sell them to realize the discount. Of
course, the discount they realize is considerably smaller than
what we get. The entrepreneur has to get his cut. Our
approach to this program is quite unique. We purchase in
conjunction St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and St. Mary’s
Roman Catholic Church, ecumenism at work in a practical
manner. And whereas the program at the other two churches is
far more extensive than St. Paul’s, we have managed to earn
over $50,000 in the past three years.
So if you have not yet joined this band wagon it is time you did.
You can get your groceries at Loblaws, Valumart, National
Grocers, LaMantia’s, or Food Basics; your household and
personal needs at Home Hardware, Canadian Tire, Shopper’s
Drug Mart or Giant Tiger, your gasoline at Canadian Tire or
Loblaws or you can eat out at Tim Horton’s, Kelsey’s, Smitty’s
or the Swiss Chalet.
Many of the congregation have signed on. When the rest do,
fund raising will become a dream.
The task ahead of us is never as
great as the Power behind us.
FOLLOW-UP …..HOW DID IT GO!
STRAWBERRY SUPPER
June 20 th 2013
Gerald Armstrong, Coordinator
O
ur annual Strawberry is one of the longest lasting
traditions at St. Paul’s. It seems to mark the end of the first
half of the year and the real beginning of summer. We had a
late strawberry season locally that meant we had to get our
150 quarts of strawberries from Bowmanville.
We managed some changes in staffing and volunteers and
the event ran very smoothly. We fed some 337+ people in less
than two hours. Paid attendance was down about 30 people
from last year in spite of the excellent weather As usual, we
received nothing but glowing reports on the variety of salads
and the whole dinner.
Obviously, the very significant volunteer effort makes it
successful. To put things in perspective, there are about 50
volunteer jobs that are involved in preparation - from making
each salad to hulling the strawberries – even before the first
person sits down for the meal on June 20. Serving the meal
occupies another 50 volunteers from serving on the buffet
lines to managing the take-out and the final cleanup. A special
thanks to the dining room team leaders: Gina Colman, Barbara
Brown, Betty Drummond and Ann Armstrong. Betty Tyndall
performed her usual miracles in managing the ticket sales and
the church waiting areas. Kyle, Kris and Eric from the church
Youth Group also deserve special mention for doing an
outstanding job during the supper. The list goes on and on.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one who
contributed. You make it possible for all of us to feel proud of
what we accomplished and to enjoy the moment.
Enjoy the summer – you earned it!
The following poem was written the day of our Annual
Strawberry Supper.
Oh what a time
At the strawberry festival
I was waiting for more
In the nearest vestibule
What a lovely warm time
When summer arrives
Thinking of winter
Just gives me the hives.
So, let’s live it up now
When we’re warm with a tan
And look forward to next year
Another “kick at the can”.
Jim Baldwin, June 20, 2013
Jim Baldwin is a regular at our St. Paul’s/Community
Care Luncheons and a few years ago wrote a poem on
his feeling at that luncheon. Thank you Jim, we look
forward to seeing you at our 2014 strawberry supper.
Thursday, July 25 th St. Paul’s
Social Committee was on the
“road” again. The committee
organized a bus trip to the 4th Line
Theatre in Millbrook to see their
production of “The Winslows of Derrymore”. The price of the
tickets included transportation, theatre Ticket and a picnic
supper catered by Baxter Creek Golf Club. Fun was had by all
as you can see from the photos.
THANK YOU
To all the volunteers
As we go to print today, it is the 1st of 5
days for our ‘Food Booth’ at the Lindsay
Fair. This means many volunteers, for
many hours of fun, fellowship and
laughter and hard work thrown into the
mix for our major fundraiser.
hen a woman is fleeing abuse and
comes to the shelter for help,
Women’s Resources priority is making sure that the woman is
safe and, if she has children, that they are safe as well. Often
these families flee quickly and take very little with them.
We here at St. Paul’s in November and December make a
large donation of personal products and children’s gifts to
their annual “Santa’s Workshop” – this is a time when a
mother choose gifts for her children and children are able to
choose gifts for their moms.
A MARKED box will be placed at the back of the church
from November 3 rd to December 8 th for your donations.
Thank you for helping to make this Christmas a brighter
and happier one for others!
O
ur group finished our season in June. Our table sold a few
items and took in approximately $100.00 at the Strawberry
Supper. This amount will be added to any profit we should
make at Harvest Happenings. A beautiful baby quilt by one of
our members was sold during the summer. We are fortunate
to have another one to sell at Harvest Happenings.
Our group has offered to make some butter tarts for the Fair
this year. This is a new endeavour for us. We have Paul's
recipe so hopefully they will come up to his standard.
We began meeting again in September on Thursdays at
1.00 p.m. in the church library. Any woman in the parish is
most welcome to join us for fun and fellowship.
We would be more than happy to accept any craft donations
to our table at Harvest Happenings. If you have anything to
donate contact any member or myself to arrange transfer.
We continue to support Women's Resources with personal
care bags and your continued contributions of items is
appreciated. We delivered 20 bags to Women's Resources in
June. They are always thankful for this outreach ministry.
OUTREACH COMMITTEE
Gail Payne
Y
our Outreach Committee has
been fairly quiet through the
summer but is getting ready for the
continuation of several programs.
Watch for the Outreach Service this fall. The date and topic are
yet to be confirmed. We are hoping though to be able to
arrange a service highlighting a talk by The Reverend David
Mulholland of Seafarers International (formerly Mission to
Seamen). I believe this ministry was one of the first to be
supported by your original Outreach Committee many years
ago and that he may have been our first outreach speaker.
Ann and Melinda, the 2 young women from Kenya whose
schooling we have been supporting, are now in their final term
of catering school. They hope to graduate in December. We
pray and hope that they will quickly find meaningful
employment in their field.
Karangwa will be taking his last course to complete his degree
in the January term. Please pray for his success and his ability
to find appropriate employment afterward.
Over the spring and summer, your committee has responded
with financial assistance to an adult and a child of our
community who are in need of treatment beyond the scope of
our provincial health plan. This assistance was supplied
through our Outreach Contingency Fund under Designated
Givings.
Remember that orders for Fair Trade coffee at cost are taken
on the first Sunday of the month for delivery the second
Sunday. Our price is $10. for 1 pound of regular coffee and
$11. for decaffeinated. “It's the right thing to do.” Using Fair
Trade coffee assists small growers on family farms to receive a
fair price for their labour in order to raise their standard of living
and quality of life.
All parishioners and your ideas are welcome at our quarterly
meetings. We meet after the 10:00 a.m. service the second
Sunday of March, June, September and December.
Come; bring your coffee and your compassion for the
marginalized in our community and world.
Hebrews 13:16
LAY PASTORAL VISITORS
Ethel Morris, Coordinator
705-324-4445
W
ednesday, September 4 th the Lay Pastoral Visitors had
their first meeting of the new season. We were glad to
see so many faithful members return and were happy to
welcome our new volunteers.
Teams go to the Manor and five nursing homes to hold
services once or twice a month. Last year we had four new
members form a team to go to the Manor – all of them have
returned for this season. Also a new team was formed to go to
Caressant Care on McLaughlin Road and this year a new
pianist has joined them. With the addition of one more person,
the established groups continue to go to Frost Manor,
Lakelands Extendicare, Caressant Care on Mary St. and 140
William Street.
With new retirement and nursing homes opening all the time,
we could use any interested persons to visit for St. Paul’s at
other places. We would also like to have people volunteer to
help the established teams when a member is sick or on
vacation. We have been able to add two accomplished people
as substitute pianist.
Two of our teams of hospital visitors are currently unable to
participate at this time because of their own health problems.
Normally a team of two goes to the Ross Memorial Hospital
each Tuesday – once a month for each team. If you are
interested in becoming a monthly visitor, please contact
Reverend Warren or Ethel Morris.
We are still struggling with the problem of the best way to keep
a contact with members who are confined to their homes due
to poor health or mobility. If you are doing this ministry – even
with one friend – please come and give us advice. If you miss
St. Paul’s and would like someone to contact you by phone,
please contact the church office.
If a storm took a corner, a wall or a window out of our
church building, manpower and funds would
immediately be made available to make it whole again.
But the church is not a building – its people who
belong here, who work and worship together. If you
can help us – even for part of the year or occasionally –
to help some of our shut-in or institutionalized
members feel they are still part of St. Paul’s, both you
and they will be winners!
S
CHANCEL GUILD
Betty Hooper
everal years ago I wrote about the Chancel Guild being the “Martha and Mary’s” in the church. We are the Martha’s
when we dust, polish and wash the utensils and linens, polish the brass, silver and furniture and then set the tables.
On Sunday morning when we come to worship we then take our place as Mary did at the feet of Jesus.
Symbols: some of you wonder why the Martha’s get upset when we come and see that the furniture has been moved or
used for a different purpose. We all live with symbols every day. The money we use is a symbol that the Government has
the resources to back up the currency. The Canadian flag is a symbol of our patriotism to our country Canada, which we are
and should be very proud of. The Anglican, Lutheran and Roman Catholic Church’s use possibly more symbols than other
denominations and these symbols go back to the book of Exodus.
The colours of the Paraments (hangings, decoration) and also the utensils in Exodus, were instructions God gave to Moses
on how to set up the Tent of Meeting; the Priestly robes, the placement of furniture and the colour of cloth. (Chapter 25:5)
gold, silver, and bronze, for utensils, blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, olive oil for the light, spices for the
anointing oil for the fragrant incense, these are still used in our services today. Blue is used at Christmas and often used to
symbolize Mary. Purple the colour of penance at Lent, and the scarlet for fire, Pentecost and martyrs. Green we use as it
symbolizes life, hope and nature’s growth. Colours are a visible sign, that all parts of the Gospel are important.
Furniture: Credence table on the right hand side of the Altar, (OT called it the
table of Shew bread or Showbread) in Hebrew it means “bread of ordering” or
‘bread of the face’ bread set before the face of or presence of God. We place
the bread and wine, water for the washing of the Priest’s hands (now using
sanitizer) an extra Chalice. From the word credence we get the word credibility
if you are familiar with the Prayer of Humble Access (BCP 83) there is the line
in it that says “We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under
thy Table etc”. This was to be set on the North side of the tabernacle opposite
the lamp stand. (Gospel) Altar, Holy table, whatever you wish to call the focal
point of the church; when you enter the church you will find a centre isle and
your vision should immediately fall on the Altar and the Cross. That is the
reason for the centre aisle, and the narrowness of the Sanctuary, and nothing
should obstruct this vision. If the Candles are lit, silence should be kept for a period of meditation before the service begins.
Save your chatter for the social coffee hour.
We do not have a Holy space like we use to have beyond the communion rail. My Mother told me that when you entered
that space the guild members always took off their shoes before dusting and vesting the altar, remembering God
telling Moses to take off his sandals as he was standing of Holy ground.
(another name for the communion rail is the bar of judgement)
Ritual: Oh that word! At the Seder supper in Jewish households Passover begins
with the youngest child asking. “What does this ceremony mean to you (Ex. 12:26)
The answer is then given in the form of a story. For the Jewish family this is always a
moving and solemn ritual. The subject of ritual in the Christian worship is a
controversial one. One view I read this summer gave me something to ponder. “We
should dispense with ritual for it endangers our true identity and cuts us off from
current means of grace”. What would happen, we wonder, if we began our Holy
Communion services by getting a little child to stand up and ask, ‘What does this
ceremony mean to you’ then the priest tells a fresh the story of Jesus, the
Passover Lamb, whose death on the cross brought us from bondage to freedom.
You may call it ritualistic, but I wonder if it might lead to a more meaningful time
of worship. Our Traditions go back a long way, thanks be to God.
The Sanctuary is a sacred space and should be respected by all.
