PROMAG PSI-300
FINE GRADE FUSED REFINING AGENT FOR IN-LINE METAL TREATMENT
PROMAG
Refining Agents
PROMAG PSI-300 is a synthetic anhydrous carnallite (KMgCl 3
) in fine
particle form. It reacts quickly to efficiently remove sodium, lithium and
calcium from molten aluminium and aluminium alloys. Sodium levels
less than 1 ppm in high magnesium aluminium alloys are attainable in
the casting. PROMAG PSI-300 removes many nonmetallic inclusions such
as oxides, carbides and borides. PROMAG PSI-300 enhances degassing
when injected and stirred by in-line degassing units.
USE INSTRUCTIONS
Recommended ranges for the application of PROMAG PSI-300 are below.
Exact requirements will depend on the initial and targeted levels of inclusions,
hydrogen, sodium, lithium and calcium. Shop-specific application rates
are given by the in-line degassing unit supplier.
Example (1): 10 kg of PROMAG PSI-300 are injected in-line in a metal
stream of 20,000 kg per hour.
Example (2): 1132 litres per hour of chlorine gas are replaced by
10 kg of PROMAG PSI-300 to treat 20,000 kg metal per hour.
The argon flow rate is given by the in-line degassing unit supplier.
PROMAG PSI-300 is extremely hygroscopic! For use, keep sealed and dry
in original package until ready for application into molten metal. Explosion
may result from sudden generation of steam from absorbed moisture.
WARNING: Keep product in original sealed bag until use to avoid moisture
absorption that may result in explosion in molten aluminium.
APPLICATIONS
• Remelters: Inclusions and hydrogen removal
• Primary smelters, high magnesium aluminium alloys: Sodium or
lithium removal
• Secondary smelters, high silicon aluminium alloys: Calcium removal
BENEFITS
• Eliminates edge cracks when rolling high
magnesium aluminium alloys
• Fine particles designed for injection by
in-line degassing systems
• Free of fluorides with no fluoride
emissions. HCl and particulate stack
emissions below new Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) Emission
Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants
(USA)
• Increases the extrusion speed and the die
life when extruding profiles
• Keeps the in-line degassing unit free from
sludge and dross buildup
• Less hygroscope than magnesium chloride
powders
• Low melting point for rapid dispersion
< 480°C
• Non-hazardous compound
• Reduces the number of breaks in
continuous casting
• Replaces chlorine gas from in-line
degassing units
PACKAGING
• 5 kg heat sealed polyethylene (PE) bags in
25 kg woven polypropylene (PP) bags
• ~1000 kg per pallet

STORAGE
Store in original container to avoid moisture
absorption. Like any other compound
containing magnesium chloride, inappropriate
storage conditions (high temperature, high
humidity, rain) reduce PROMAG PSI-300
efficiency. Any bag containing evidence of
moisture MUST NEVER be used.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Prior to use, refer to the product safety data
sheet (SDS) for proper handling and required
personal protective equipment (PPE).
